BAPTISM OF OUR LORD

It has been suggested the most important part of our Eucharist is the
dismissal: Go forth to love and serve
the Lord. Without that, what benefit
we derive from the celebration remains
among ourselves. And that is contrary
to the church’s mission to go out to
the ends of the earth and make disciples of all. Our baptism claims us for
the mission, just as Jesus was claimed
by the voice from heaven as the beloved Son. The words of Isaiah outline
the message of God’s chosen one: a
proclamation of justice to the nations.
As we go forth in loving service, we
carry the mandate of justice for the
sake of all God’s beloved children.

The St. Andrew Community Center is
always busy, but December was really
hopping! In addition to our regular
programs including Emergency Services, Food Pantry, Smile Care Everywhere Dental Clinic, Nativity School
breakfast & lunch, PE classes and Arts
Enhancements, Bible studies, basketball, youth meetings, choir practices,
and Thai Chi, there are holiday celebrations for Nativity School students
and their families, a special dinner for
Nativity School Alumni, an annual
Christmas celebration for the African
American Catholic Community of
Oregon, and the Portland Modern
Quilt Guild. Throughout the month
Emergency Services volunteers are
coordinating our Christmas Food Box
and Toy program with the Boy Scout,
the Girl Scouts, Jesuit High School, the
Oregon Food Bank, Caruso Produce,
St. Vincent de Paul, and KGW’s Toy
Drive. These organizations along with
many parishioners give food and gifts
for Christmas to 150 families. Then an
additional 50 Hispanic families receive
food and gifts for the El Dia de Reyes
celebration. December is also a musical
month – Christmas Choir, Children’s
Choir, Hispanic Youth Choir, Gospel Choir, and the Portland Chamber
Orchestra grace our rooms with music.
And, the beautiful Hispanic culture is
also highlighted in December with the
celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe
and Las Posadas. Our mission is at
work in the St. Andrew Community
Center. Thank you for volunteering,
participating, and giving your financial
support.

esta de locura! Aparte de nuestros programas regulares, que incluye Servicios de

programa de Juguetes por medio de los
Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, Escuela Jesuita,
el Banco de Comida de Oregon, Caruso
Produce, San Vicente de Paul y la colecta
de Juguetes de KGW. Estas organizaciones junto con muchos parroquianos dan
comida y regalos para 150 familias esta
navidad. A parte de esto, 50 familias más
de la comunidad hispana reciben comida
y regalos el Día de Reyes. Diciembre es
también un mes muy musical. Coro de
Navidad, Coro de Niños, Coro Hispano,
Gospel Choir, y el Ensemble Orquestral
de Portland llenan y engalanan nuestro
espacio con música. Y nuestra hermosa
comunidad hispana se llena también de
luz con la celebración de la Virgen de
Guadalupe y las Posadas. Nuestra misión
está trabajando en el Centro Comunitario.

Solemnity of the
Baptism of Our Lord
Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord.
This brings to an end the season of
Christmas. The Church recalls Our
Lord's second manifestation or epiphany
which occurred on the occasion of His
baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended
into the River to sanctify its waters and
to give them the power to beget sons of
God. The event takes on the importance
of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes.
In the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany
because at the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan God
appeared in three persons. The baptism of John was a sort
of sacramental preparatory for the Baptism of Christ. It
moved men to sentiments of repentance and induced them
to confess their sins. Christ did not need the baptism of
John. Although He appeared in the "substance of our flesh"
and was recognized "outwardly like unto ourselves," He was
absolutely sinless and impeccable. He conferred upon the
water the power of the true Baptism which would remove
all the sins of the world: "Behold the Lamb of God, behold
Him Who takes away the sin of the world."
Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's baptism are symbolical of what happened at our Baptism. At
Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at
our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At His
baptism Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the
Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons of
God. At Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our
Baptism heaven was opened to us. At His baptism Jesus
prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin.

Customs on the Feast of the
Baptism of the Lord
In the Ukraine the faithful gather in the front of the church
where a cross of ice is placed. Since there are no rivers near
churches, a tub is filled with water and is placed in front of
the ice cross. During special and very unique services the
water is blessed and brought home. This is taken in before
breakfast is eaten. The remains are kept during the year to
keep the home safe from fire, lightening and sickness.
The priest visits his parishioners to bless their homes with
the holy water that the New Year may be one of cooperation with the gift of God; His Son and the participation in
the Life He has come to lead us in toward Salvation. The
evening meal is very much a repeat of the Holy Supper
except that there are no restrictions on meat and dairy
products. It starts with Kutia, which has been saved from
Christmas Eve.

Advent Lessons from John the Baptist
There is no more familiar figure among the characters of Advent
than John the Baptist, understood by the followers of Jesus as the forerunner. Yet
it is doubtful that John’s own followers considered him a forerunner of anyone. To
them he was a prophet of the kingdom of God, with a great deal of charisma in his
own right.
We have slightly different portraits of John in the different Gospels. The locusts
and wild honey come from Matthew and Mark (Matt 3:4; Mark 1:6). In Matthew he
loses his cool at the Pharisees and Sadducees (Matt 3:7 – 10). The three Synoptic
Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) are careful to portray the beginning of Jesus’
public ministry only after John has been arrested, as if Jesus feels that he must continue the ministry of John – not the other way around. Timing is everything.
Did Jesus begin as a disciple of John? Those who fell under John’s spell came to
him for baptism, as did Jesus according to all four Gospels. Yet all the Gospel writers
portray John as recognizing that someone greater is here in the person of Jesus. It
would be neither the first nor the last time that the disciple becomes greater than the
teacher.
During Advent our thoughts are supposed to go to preparation for the coming of
Jesus once again into our hearts. Perhaps John the Baptist can help us to keep our focus on what is really necessary: to get all the other things done with dispatch, to enjoy
the parties, but then to reduce it all to the simple reality of the reign of God signified
in the birth of a child.
