n June 1977, Star Wars was racking up box-office records in theaters across the nation. A start-up company in northern California fired the
first salvo in the personal-computer revolution with the release of the Apple II. And after a concert at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis,
Elvis Presley left the building, never to return to a stage.
In Duluth, 150 local runners raced to little fanfare in the first Grandma’s Marathon, held on June 25. But just two days later, attention
of the entire state turned to the port city after news broke that mining heiress Elisabeth Congdon and a personal attendant were found
murdered at Glensheen, the Congdon family’s opulent estate on the shore of Lake Superior.
Roger Caldwell, the second husband of Elisabeth’s adopted daughter Marjorie, was eventually convicted of the crimes. Marjorie, who
had led a troubled life, was subsequently tried for conspiring with Caldwell in the murders, but was acquitted. New evidence that came to light in
her trial led to the Minnesota Supreme Court overturning Caldwell’s conviction. Before a new trial could begin, Caldwell pled guilty to lesser charges
of second-degree murder and was released from prison after serving five years behind bars. However, his demons continued to pursue him, and he
committed suicide in 1988.
In the ensuing 35 years since the Glensheen killings, the public’s fascination with the place and the characters associated with it has continued
unabated. More than two million visitors have toured the mansion since it was opened to the public by its current owner, the University of
Minnesota Duluth, in 1979. Meanwhile, Marjorie Congdon has continued to make headlines for her misadventures, including two prison terms for
arson. Though three books about the Congdon murders have been published, the final chapters of the story of Glensheen and its infamous

inhabitants are still being written.
Chef Matt Paulson is excited about local beef, and diners will find some outstanding
presentations of it at the Sample Room. They cut, grind and blend all of their
offerings from scratch, and the charcuterie is hitting an all-time high. But the

Ventura Vents
The former Minnesota governor explains why he’ll never
fly commercially again, why fluoride isn’t in the water
to promote healthy teeth and how he lost his faith in the
American dream — among other things.

ou won’t find yourself sitting next
to former Gov. Jesse Ventura on a
commercial flight these days.
Last November, a federal
judge dismissed a lawsuit brought
by Ventura. The suit alleged airport security
procedures such as pat downs and full-body
scanning constitute unreasonable searches and
seizures forbidden by the Fourth Amendment.
Ventura promptly announced he’d never fly
commercially again and that he’d seek citizenship
in Mexico, where he has a second home.
But that was only one of the subjects
Ventura spoke about during a wide-ranging
interview with Artful Living Publisher Frank
Roffers and Contributing Editor Rudy Maxa
when they sat down in St. Paul’s Lowertown to
discuss his take on travel.
The conversation also touched on why
fluoride in the nation’s drinking water might
be making the American electorate passive,
what it’s like living off the grid in Mexico’s
Baja Peninsula, what Ventura considers his
major legacy to Minnesota from his time in
office and Fidel Castro’s unusual handshake.
Artful Living began by asking Ventura
about his second home.

Artful Living: This is a travel issue, so let’s
talk about Mexico. We’re curious about
your life there. There seems to be some
ambivalence on your part about the United
States and…
Jesse Ventura: No, not at all — it was all
about adventure. I got out of office, I taught
at Harvard in ’04 and when I was done at
Harvard, I felt I was young enough and I was
[in good enough] financial shape and that
the window of opportunity of adventure was
closing for me.
AL: Had you been to Mexico before?
JV: I’d vacationed there twice: right after I
got out of office and then the year after I left
Harvard. And it was then that I found my home
down there. And that was the express purpose
of why I went down there. I rented a car and put
1,800 kilometers on it in about 10 days.
AL: Did you know you wanted to live off
the grid?
JV: I always wanted to live by the ocean, and
at first I wanted Hawaii. And then the Baja
came up, and I found the Baja more attractive
because, No. 1, economically, it is far less
expensive than Hawaii. And, No. 2, it gives you
double option, which today I’m happy for.
AL: Double option?
JV: I can drive there. Which is what I do. So
since I’ve ceased flying, it’ll have no bearing
on my going to Mexico because I’ve been
driving it for six years already.
AL: And how off the grid are you?
JV: I’m way off the grid. I’m an hour from
pavement and an hour from electricity.
My house is solar, so the sun generates my
electricity. The sun which I worship today. I
follow the teachings of George Carlin.

Changing up your accessories for Fall is a great way to give your space a new spirit. Try

Fall days when it’s nap time.

Entering your home - for yourself or your guests – sets the tone for your time
there. Most of us are accustomed to making sure the door through which guests enter looks
great with a striking floral display – but what about where we come & go most of the

HEAVY METAL
Emphasize the metal finishes in your space. The contrast of metal with wood, stone, or fabric
is rugged and warm. Clean up your fireplace tools, andirons, & log grate so they’re gleaming
and ready for another year of raging evening fires. Polish up your towering silver
candlesticks so they really make a statement on your Dining Room table or fireplace mantel.
