Demonstration launch event (in Oslo, linked to new
filling station and 5 FCEV)
The planning of the Oslo launch event has been ongoing during 2011.
To be able to discuss details and settle a common plan, a two days workshop was
arranged in Oslo 23-24 August. Participants: Norwegian stakeholders and the core
communication team from Hydrogen Sweden and LBST.
Outputs from Oslo workshop:
1. Hold press seminar and arrange a “glamorous” inauguration ceremony at
SINTEF HRS site for press and VIPs
2. Attend and hold speeches at Zero Conference/HyNor session
3. Arrange a public Ride & drive event in Oslo centre at Aker Brygge.
Plans and decisions for the Oslo launch week
1. The date for the inauguration was set for 21 November - since Zero conference
had invited Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger as their keynote speaker - and H2mS project
got a "half promise" we could have Mr. Schwarzenegger attending our event as well.
The project members assumed this would be interesting for national and even
international media to cover. (Mr. Schwarzenegger unfortunately later did not
materialize).
2. The date for Zero Conference/HyNor was fixed to 21 and 22 November.
3. The date for the ride & drive event was set for a Saturday, 26 November, as the
project partners intended to reach the general public at a central location, strongly
frequented by the public. The decision then fell on Aker Brygge which is the largest
and most modern shopping centre in Oslo.
Joint partner efforts
During the autumn there were many telephone conferences performed and countless
amounts of e-mails written. The launch program, the guest list, the location, to-dolists, budget and more details were settled. There were much engagement,
enthusiasm and input during the whole period from Daimler, SINTEF, H2 Logic and
Hyundai.
The larger part of the detailed coordinating and planning work was performed by
LBST and Hydrogen Sweden. LBST made big efforts with the Ride & drive planning
and Hydrogen Sweden coordinated The Oslo launch event, the press seminar and
the Zero Conference. It was a good way of doing it – dividing the work.

One more visit in Oslo to settle details
For getting all preparation details in place Hydrogen Sweden had to make second trip
to Oslo in early October, to meet stakeholders as SINTEF, Zero, Bertel O. Steen, and
invited politicians once more for important planning and decisions.
Invitations
VIP invitations had been sent out in advance, and there were a really good and
fruitful teamwork between the project partners around the organization of the inviting
process. HyNor were very engaged and were together with SINTEF in charge of the
local Oslo name list and the work with classifying and prioritizing the invitations. Also
LBST, H2Logic and more partners made big efforts to help Hydrogen Sweden to
coordinate this important work.
The Launch
The Oslo Launch Event was kicked off by the press seminar and by the glamorous
inauguration an early Monday morning (07:30 – 09.00 p.m.) Originally it was planned
to take place in SINTEF’s large conference room, but was moved to the much bigger
SINTEF cantina when the response of possible participants was overwhelmingly
positive. One of the additional SINTEF contributions was a seven meters long
wallpaper with project information attached to one of the cantina walls (hiding a
construction area behind). Complimentary breakfast was served to all guests.
During the outside session ten H2mS logo branded jackets were worn by the project
members – visible for the press and the VIPs.
The program:
Inside SINTEF: one hour with press seminar, presentations of partners, breakfast
finger food and mingling with VIPs
Outside SINTEF: In front of the station a stage was erected for a 45 minutes long
moderated interview program. Speakers: representatives of OEM: s, the Oslo
Mayor Fabian Stang, and a politician engaged in environmental questions, Mr.
Ola Elvestuen.

H2moves participating at HyNor Session/Zero Conference, Oslo:
http://www.zerokonferansen.no/zeroconference with two project presentations by
Johnny Danielsen/Bertel O. Steen and Björn Aronsson/Hydrogen Sweden.
Three representatives from LBST/Hydrogen Sweden represented and informed
the conference visitors about the project and the cars. The cars were shown
inside, but guests had the opportunity to also test drive the FCEVs outside.

Public Ride & Drive at Aker Brygge
November 26 – Ride & drive at Aker Brygge: The Ride & Drive event on Saturday
26th November was successful counting from the number of visitors and their
feedback. Four Mercedes B-class F-Cell vehicles, two Hyundai iX 35 FCEV and
four Th!nk cars participated in the event.
A tent was used as shelter, for discussions with guests and to register the drivers.
For educational and PR outreach several documents and give aways had been
prepared such as company specific vehicle brochures, flyers, but also chocolate
bars, reflectors and paper fold-out cars for children. The project logo branded
jackets and vests were worn by all staff in order to be seen and recognized.
See in the attachments: Public driving best practice.

The general public was reached by advertising in the local press Aftenposten Aften
(see add in the attachments) http://www.aftenposten.no/) and passengers passing by
were contacted and offered project branded chocolates.
The Ride & drive attracted a wide interest.

Public Driving:
Best Practice / Lessons learned for the organizer
Rule No° 1: Don’t do an outdoor event.
Rule No° 2: If you are planning an outdoor event, please refer to rule no.° 1.
Still not discouraged? Ok, let’s get started - but never say we didn’t warn you!
This document resulted from the organization of Norwegians largest public driving of
FCEVs – and the first one being organized as part of H2mS on Saturday, 26 th November 2011 in Oslo downtown, just in front of Aker Brygge. The document is meant to
support you in organizing a public driving yourself.
The nice thing about letting strangers drive FCEVs is that they all like it, without any
exception. We didn’t get a single negative reaction.
So, here is what it takes in chronological order:
1. Success factors:

Good weather

Brilliant location

Promotion (in advance and during the day)

Enough cars
2. Strategy

What is your aim? When will you have been successful?

What is your customer value? You will want to write this on all your printed materials.
3. Official approvals needed in Oslo (2-3 months in advance):

Location

To use the electricity

Police

1/13
Public Driving:
Best Practice / Lessons learned for the organizer

Fire department (?)

To distribute flyers

To hand out food and drinks

Clarification who removes snow in winter

To set up “traffic signs” at street lambs
4. Materials needed:
For printed materials: latest order is 4 weeks before the event. Assume 3 weeks for designing all of it and approvals, so start taking care of this 7 weeks in advance.
Printed materials:

I strongly recommend Flyers with sweets attached to it in a way, that both is
visible at the same time. We used “Premium Cards” from www.giffits.de (1000
pieces were distributed within 4 hours by two people)
http://www.giffits.de/premium-card-christmas-blue-mit-ritter-sportschokowuerfel-werbegeschenke-134626.htm

Sweets at the booth

Give-aways to attract children

Beach flag (I strongly recommend them. Increases visibility and level of professionalism, cost about 150€ each. Totally worth it.)

Labels, stickers for the tent, stating what everything is about using key words
your marketing prof would have wanted you to use e.g. “Test drive a fuel cell
car.” “Only today” “new” “for free” etc.

Brochures about the project and from partners

Prepare for “I drove a fuel cell car” Event-photography

Press kits, press invitation, press release
Corporate Identity:

We used 10 warm outdoor Jackets from http://www.engelbert-strauss.de/ with
our logotype on front and back

[email protected]
2/13
Public Driving:
Best Practice / Lessons learned for the organizer

And 10 vests (one size fits all, even on top of the warmest winter jackets) from
http://www.korntex.de with also our logotype in big on the back and smaller on
the front
Non-printed material needed:
Tent
Extension cable
Multi-way-connector for
electricity
Tables
Table cloths
Chairs
Sth to fix table cloths
Wintertime: locally appre-
(double sided tape?
ciated hot drinks for free
Bänder?)
Cocktail tables
Cameras, printer, etc
Bar chairs
Garbage bins
5. People needed:
Jobs to be staffed during preparation (one person can do several jobs):

Organizer: plans, “knows everything”

Local Coordinator who is experienced with where to get tents, tables, chairs,
electricity, … and knows the location and can take care of local approvals.

Designer: to design printed material

Copywriter: texting of printed material

Native speaker of all languages you will use for printed materials

Support: paying the bills, calling up the give-away companies etc whether everything is alright and why on earth things haven’t been delivered at the date
agreed upon

Support: small research tasks (What are the biggest radio stations in Oslo?
Please make a slide show out of these photos. Etc. )

Media expert, who knows what a “story” is from a journalists point of view
Jobs to be staffed during the day:

Experts:
o 1.2 experts per car, so they can take breaks but the cars can keep running
+49 (89) 608 110-41
[email protected]
3/13
Public Driving:
Best Practice / Lessons learned for the organizer
o 3-4 “experts” for answering questions
o 1 press-contact expert, in case any press will show up

Support:
o Photographer to take “I drove a fuel cell car “ pictures and YouTube videos
o 2-3 people for support tasks: registration desk, cleaning up, re-arranging
things, distributing photos ... There are a million things to do and keeping
experts busy with those things doesn’t make sense.
o Another 2-4 for distributing flyers nearby. I recommend choosing people
from your extended network, this way they feel more obliged to work
properly.
6. Press / Media:

Have a newspaper ad in the largest available newspaper or in all the small ones.
About 1/3 of our test-drivers came only because of our ad in Aftenposten the
Wednesday before the event.

We unfortunately could not attract any media representatives. We sent out Press
invitations throughout the week before through various channels, and a reminder the day before. Maybe there was already so much attention during the
station opening event 5 days early that people were tired and would have
needed sth really new, or Oslo journalists don’t work on Saturdays (I received
one e-mail saying that) or i didn’t find the right words in the press invitation. Or
it is a kind of marketing event that press in a large city doesn’t care about. I
don’t know, probably it was a mixture of several things. So good luck – and
have a local media expert supporting you with high effort, starting his work
about 4 weeks early. In case you want to arrange an exclusive story.
7. To take care of in the days before:
Sth to drink for staff
Prepare press kits
Name tags
Cups

 Mobile phone numbers
puncher, scissors, knife,
band-aid,
of everyone
 Driving routes (10 minutes per driver is
enough) with addresses
for navigations systems
 brochures
8. The Event itself
Just do it!
9. After the event (Asap)

Update webpage with text, photos and videos

Send around press release in language of the country you’ve been in

1. Determine Car and time (ID = Car-number . # of drive)
2. Block in big list by entering first name + family name (important!)
3. Ask to sign the appropriate form
4. Check Driver’s licence and take a photo of it, stamp the form when finished
a. Hand out reminder-paper (if necessary)
b. When person returns to stand 10 minutes early: mark name with green highlighter
5. Driver takes stamped (!) form and walks to the car, hands the car-expert the signed and stamped (!) form
6. Car-expert collects those and makes sure to have them all returned to the organizer at the end of the day.
Flaw in this process: One only has the Einverständniserklärung (ca. “declaration of agreement) to publish the photos
taken of the driver, not the co-drivers…

OAS:
Welcome to all of you - and a special welcome to all of you who have just joined us. My name
is Ole Andre Sivertsen, and I have to say, as a host for Norwegian science and educational TV,
school book editor, writer, and not at least as an engineer in environmental physics, it´s been
a thrill to follow development of hydrogen as an energy carrier from the first initial tests until
today, when we see a new H2 refueling station in Oslo to be opened.
3
08:30:30
OAS:
The reason for our move outdoors, is the official inauguration and unveiling of the greatly
anticipated hydrogen refueling station. For this occasion we will be presenting a set of
thoughts and viewpoints, so joining me on stage are representatives from industry, research
and politics. This station has been built by the Danish company H2Logic – placed here at the
Norwegian SINTEF – and operated by both companies together in cooperation – both are
partners of the H2moves Scandinavia project – which is a project founded by several
European industrial partners together with the European Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint
Undertaking Program.
4
08:31:00
OAS:
Obviously, we would like all of you to have the chance to get familiar with the project and the
efforts that has lead us to get where we are today, and the first to help us with this is Mr.
Jacob Krogsgaard from H2Logic. A round of applause please…
5
08:31:30
OAS:
Welcome to you Mr. Krogsgaard. You are the Managing Director of H2Logic, a small systems
supplier committed to the develop hydrogen refueling stations, now entering a new face to
prepare for “commercialization” and “customer acceptance”.

What stands behind your strategy and what is your and your customer’s long term vision for
the fuelling station roll-out in Europe and Scandinavia in particular?

OAS:
Hydrogen is not a primary energy – we need energy to produce hydrogen. How can we make
sure that the source of this energy is renewable?
JK:

OAS:
For slightly more in depth visions of the future energy sources and future types of cars we
will hear from Mr. Peter Froeschle from Daimler (Senior manager strategic energy projects
and market development fuel cells/EV), and from Hyundai, Mr. Allan Rushforth
(Vice President and COO). Give them an applause, please.
7
08:34:00
OAS:
Welcome. As we hear from Mr. Krogsgaard, the plans are to have a well developed refueling
station infrastructure already by 2020. First question is for you Mr. Froeschle: - Daimler is
among those automobile manufactures with the longest tradition of developing fuel cell
vehicles and with highest commitment. Which is your vision and ambitions?
PF:
…
OAS:
What is your view for the refueling infrastructure and how close are you collaborating with
the infrastructure industry?
PF:
…
OAS:
And what are your rollout plans, or in other words; - when can we expect the vehicles to be
available for the public?
PF:
…
OAS:
How do fuel cell driven cars compare with other electric vehicles? Where are the future
markets for each?
4 min
I reckon that’s why Daimler demonstrates FCEV’s in Norway?
PF:
…
OAS:
Hyundai is a newcomer in this fuel call electric vehicles business, but yet you are today
amongst the leading promoters of this technology worldwide. Mr. Rushforth; - can you
explain this?
A.R.:
…
OAS:
When comparing worldwide automotive industry strategies for FCEVs - where does
Scandinavia stand from Hyundai’s/your point of view?
A.R.:

OAS:
Which are Hyundai’s plans to roll our vehicles worldwide and in Europe or Scandinavia?
A.R.:
…

08:38:00
OAS:
OK, then I’ll say thank you for now to the two of you. It will also be an opportunity for the
press to ask you questions after the show.
Thank you to Mr. Rushforth and Mr. Froeschle

The industry is just one part of this. Another important part is the supplier of numerous years
of research and development. To talk about this we have the CEO of SINTEF, Unni Steinsmo.
Please give her a warm applause…
OAS:
We are after all standing on SINTEF’s ground - First of all, what is SINTEF`s role in this project?
US:

OAS:
Can you explain SINTEF´s collaboration with the industry? How is the R&D processes
influenced by politics?

08:41:30
OAS:
There’s no doubt that the transformation from a carbon fueled society to a carbon free
society is a popular topic for political debate, but in some cases it´s easier to agree. To help
illustrating this we have with us Oslo Mayor Fabian Stang, and Venstre politician Mr. Ola
Elvestuen. Applause…
12
08:42:00
OAS:
Now we hear that the industry is ready to work for the FCEV “commercialization” and
“customer acceptance”, and that we in the near future will be able to drive fuel cell electric
vehicles. What will this mean for our society concerning the challenges of global warming and
transport’s dependence on dwindling fossil fuel reserves?
FS:

OAS:
Have Norway and Oslo done enough to specially prepare for this roll-out? What is Oslo’s
ambition in hydrogen and fuel cells?
FS:

OAS:
Mr. Elvestuen – you are on the opposite side of the political arena – BUT, to our knowledge
both of you and Fabian Stang are both supporting FCEV´s – can you comment?
OE:

OAS:
Which is the expected impact of hydrogen and fuel cells beyond “just reducing CO2 emission
levels from transport” and are there any other industrial assets for Norway/Scandinavia to
participate early as or in transition markets?
OE:

What is the possible approach and timescale of transferring the Oslo model to the rest of

OAS:
Mr. Ola Elvestuen, as an hydrogen enthusiast and from a political party with an
environmental friendly profile, which advices would you give to the Major of Oslo and
Norwegian politicians to make sure this project becomes a successful cornerstone on the
path commercialization of fuel cell vehicles?
O.E:

OAS:
Mr Stang, are Norwegian politicians in general prepared to give this project the necessary
tools to become a success?
OAS
Unni Steinsmo, SINTEF is probably one of those institutions that recognises first if there is will
and power behind the words of politicians. How have you experienced this so far in the
process, and what advice do you have for them for the next phase introducing hydrogen

I think this has been an inspirational Monday morning. Of course, after today, all of us would
like to have a hydrogen fueled electric vehicle, and now, with this refueling plant the bar has
been lowered a little bit to get one.
If you have further questions regarding the H2 refueling plant and hydrogen fueled electric
vehicles, Jakob Krogsgaard, Peter Froeschler and Mr. Alan Rushforth will be available after
this session.
Thank you very much to Fabian Stang, Ola Elvestuen and Unni Steinsmo, and thank you to all
of you for coming.

The Norwegian Case – Oslo
hydrogen infrastructure
continues to grow
Personal invitation to the opening of H2moves Scandinavia’s new “state
of the art” hydrogen refuelling station in Oslo
You and other VIPs of the hydrogen stake holders are warmly welcome to the inauguration and celebrity ribbon cutting of the hydrogen refuelling station, scheduled for the early morning of 21st of November, 2011. Join us for the celebration and
breakfast, whilst listening to our celebrity speakers.
During breakfast, you and the invited press will hear a presentation about the “why”
and “how” of the EU project H2moves Scandinavia:
■ The new Hydrogen refuelling station opening
■ How we are working to gain customer acceptance for hydrogen with a European
Hydrogen Road Tour, 2012, and public test drives of hydrogen powered Fuel Cell
Electric Vehicles
■ The hydrogen cars that will be ready for mass production in 2014
The event is synchronized with the Zero conference so you will be able to attend our
interesting morning session and still be in time for the opening of the Zero conference.
Politicians, car manufacturers and environmental organisations all over the world
regard hydrogen fuel cells as a key technology in the future of sustainable mobility. We’ll be helping you find out more about the market introduction of Fuel Cell
Electric Vehicles (FCEV) and why Norway is one of Europe’s “hotspots” in the introduction of zero emission vehicles. See for yourself why the EU and major players are
investing in a new hydrogen refuelling station in Norway.
The new hydrogen refuelling station is built by the Danish company H2Logic, and situated at the SINTEF research organisation’s site. It is one of the results of the
project and initiative H2moves Scandinavia financed by
EU:s FCH-JU programme, Transnova (NO) and EUDP (DK).
