FINELINE ADDITIVE MANUFA CTURING
FINELINE ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING Fineline Additive Manufacturing specializes in the rapid prototyping of three-dimensional objects. Within Fineline, we offer three high-tech processes: stereolithography (SL), selective laser sintering (SLS) and direct metal laser sintering (DMLS). Whether small parts with precise geometries or large, highly detailed patterns are needed, our additive processes provide product developers with another quick-turn option during prototyping. Each additive process has its own benefits. SL has the widest selection of materials, best feature resolution and smoothest surface finish. SLS offers a large build volume, can produce parts with highly complex geometries and creates durable prototypes made from tough nylon materials. For production-quality metal parts, Fineline uses DMLS to build functional metal prototypes with the potential to transition into metal injection molding if increased production is needed. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS Size. With our additive processes, we’re able to deliver prototypes ranging from very small parts that meet extreme tolerance demands to large parts with precise patterns. Maximum build sizes: • 29 in. by 25 in. by 21 in. (SL) • 18 in. by 18 in. by 22 in. (SLS) • 9.8 in. by 9.8 in. by 11 in. (DMLS) Resolution. Fineline excels in high-quality precision parts. Depending on which additive process and resolution is chosen, layer thickness and minimum feature size will vary. Stereolithography • Normal Resolution: Layer thickness of 0.004 in. with minimum feature size of 0.010 in. • High Resolution: Layer thickness of 0.002 in. with minimum feature size of 0.004 in. • Micro Resolution: Layer thickness of 0.001 in. with minimum feature size of 0.002 in. Selective Laser Sintering • Normal Resolution: Layer thickness of 0.004 in. with minimum feature size of 0.022 in. Direct Metal Laser Sintering • Normal Resolution: Layer thickness of 0.0008 in. (20 microns) with minimum feature size of 0.015 in. • High Resolution: Layer thickness of 0.0012 in. (30 microns) with minimum feature size of 0.006 in. QUICK STATS VOLUME: 1 to 50+ parts SPEED: Shipped in 1 to 7 days COST: Parts start at $95 QUESTIONS? An additive manufacturing specialist is available at 919.781.7702 to discuss any questions you might have regarding your design and our SL, SLS and DMLS processes. Learn more about our additive manufacturing service at protolabs.com/fineline. Materials. We offer various material options within our additive processes that are constantly updated to meet prototyping and master fabrication needs. Our materials provide many different characteristics: resolution, clarity, stiffness and feel, durability, impact resistance, temperature tolerance, and water resistance. Materials include: Stereolithography •ABS-like •Polycarbonate-like •Polypropylene-like • SLArmor (nickel-plated) Selective Laser Sintering • Nylon (four types in various levels of stiffness and ductility) Direct Metal Laser Sintering •Aluminum •Cobalt Chrome •Inconel "Any time I need the best quality parts with the proper fit, I use Fineline. Nobody else can touch their work when it comes to making parts such as ours." — John Wasko, Motorola, Inc. •Stainless Steel •Titanium Tolerances. Typical tolerances on well-designed additive parts are: • +/- 0.002 in. to +/- 0.004 in. plus 0.001 in./in. (SL) • +/- 0.005 in. plus 0.001 in./in. (SLS) • +/- 0.003 in. plus 0.001 in./in. (DMLS) Surface finishes. There are five different finishes with our additive manufacturing service. Fineline can also color- and texture-match paints; chrome plate and rubberized soft-touch coat; and apply graphics and decals. A conversation with an additive specialist at Fineline is required for special finishes. protolabs.com 877.479.3680
