the newsletter of the Pope Memorial SPCA of Concord-Merrimack County • autumn/winter 2014 From the Desk of Heather Faria, Executive Director O ur wonderful new shelter is full of pets who would very much like to be home for the holidays. Despite the creature comforts of our new facility and the loving care provided by our staff, a warm hearth and a family to call one’s own is still every homeless pets’ desire. We understand your reluctance—almost all of the pets in our care have a past, sometimes a difficult one. The impression left on them by life so far can include some insecurities. Adopting a pet means giving them time to settle in, to gain confidence, to unlearn some old habits and learn some new ones. It may mean getting beyond some piddling on the floor or dealing with something precious chewed, scratched, or broken. An animal who has had reason to be concerned about humans or who has simply not learned the best manners around people might mean planning ahead for visitors or preparing for the mail delivery. You may need to shop for special food or schedule visits for ongoing medical care. It will almost definitely mean practicing good behavior every day for several weeks or months. Yes, our lives are already busy. Carving out time and reserving energy to care for another creature is not a decision to be made lightly. When you do decide to take a new pet into your home, we have a shelter full of dogs and cats and small furry creatures who would appreciate your consideration. In return for your time and patience, your planning and playtime, your affection and dedication, I promise they will love you forever. In the words of one of our recent dog adopters who worked hard to get her beyond a destructive phase, “We are so grateful that she chose us to be her forever family!” Welcome, Patrick Breen At our Dinner with the Animals in May, we heard loud and clear from the more than 300 people in attendance that prevention and investigation of animal cruelty should be a key priority for the Pope Memorial SPCA. All those at the Dinner voted with their generous donations to our fund in need to hire a part-time staff person to focus on those areas. We are thrilled to announce that we have hired Patrick Breen to the Director of Field Services position to handle cruelty prevention and investigation for the animal shelter. Pat has been working since late August and judging by how busy he has been, the need is certainly clear. Pat spent twenty years as a New York City police officer, 12 of those in the mounted police unit. Upon retirement, he worked for seven years as a Humane Law Enforcement Agent for ASPCA. He and his family will be moving from Long Island. “I’ve always liked New Hampshire,” he says, and is looking forward to getting to know the Merrimack County community. “This position allows me to combine my experience in the police department and my interest in animals.” Pat emphasizes that a key aspect of his work is intervention before a Continued on page 3 Our name and our logo have changed! Autumn/Winter • 2014 5 Volunteer Spotlight Out and About with the SPCA K Outreach to the community is a key part of the Pope Memorial SPCA’s mission, as evidenced by the following list of outreach activities in which we participated from April 1 to September 30, 2014. The list of events we attended in the past six months makes it clear how much we rely on our fantastic volunteers to help us get out in the community! And we invite the community to us with tours and classes on site. Overall, in this six-month period we reached over 10,000 people explaining our mission and providing humane education. aren Johnson has been volunteering for the Pope Memorial SPCA for eight years. As a social worker, she has taken her SPCA volunteer work into the community and is making a real difference. All with the help of a few furry friends. Karen works in the schools with at-risk children. It’s all about early intervention, she Sebastian and SPCA Alum, Pudgey the rabbit share says. “We don’t want kids a quiet moment. to end up six years old and have never seen a book before.” So Karen works in places like the Village Elementary School in Pembroke once a month and the Bridge Alternative Program where she brings a story book to read. And along with her comes an animal. Where does the animal fit in? The SPCA’s Reading Tails program often is described as an opportunity to help kids struggling with literacy to read to a nonjudgmental listener. Statistics affirm that young readers who have this opportunity increase their reading skill. But Karen has taken Reading Tails to a different level. “Food, shelter/comfort and love,” says Karen, “have been recognized as the top three human needs. It’s our job to see that these fundamental needs are met for the kids before they can settle in and listen to a story. The animal not only provides a distraction from the transition from home to classroom, but helps kids with their comfort level, gets them engaged and in the room. They will then be able to hear the story better and focus on literacy development.” Not only has Karen volunteered her time with the SPCA (as well as adopted several animals!) but she is reaching out to places like PACE Charter High School in Allenstown and spreading the volunteer bug. And now a couple of PACE students bring books once a week to the elementary school and read with the kids there. And the Bridge kids volunteer at the SPCA twice a month! Karen has clearly created one of those win-win situations. And, listening to the enthusiasm and pride in her voice as she tells about her work, she wins as well using her background to do meaningful work for both the SPCA and the young children in the community! The Ark Angels program supports homeless pets in our shelter. Ark Angel support is acknowledged Ark Angels 6 with a plaque on a cat condo ($300) or a dog kennel ($600) for one year.
