2013 Intel Malaysia Corporate Responsibility Report About Intel Malaysia Intel Corporation chose Penang, Malaysia as the site for its first offshore location and since its establishment here in 1972 has flourished from a workforce of 100 to over 8,000 today. Intel’s initial investment of USD1.6 Million has now grown to over USD4 Billion – developing what was once a memory chip fabrication plant into one of Intel’s most complex sites. This includes its role as one of Intel’s largest ATM (Assembly Test Manufacturing) facilities - contributing significantly to Intel Corporation’s high volume manufacturing. In addition to delivering multi-functional operations for global shared services in IT, Finance and Human Resources, Intel Malaysia has also built strong credentials in design and development with one major design center in Malaysia: the Malaysia Design Center in Penang. During this unprecedented industry transformation, we remain as committed to leadership in corporate responsibility as we do to innovation in our products and technologies. We believe that corporate responsibility creates value for our company, our stockholders, and society. Energy-efficient performance remains a driving force in the design of our products. In 2013, we launched 4th generation Intel® Core™ processors that deliver industryleading performance as well as the largest generational gain in battery life in Intel’s product history. As part of our efforts to encourage innovation and push the boundaries of imagination—in corporate research labs, classrooms, homes, and even garages— we collaborated with Arduino* to introduce the Intel® Galileo development board, designed for the “maker” and education communities. To spark the minds of young innovators and ignite new technologies, we plan to donate 50,000 Intel Galileo boards to 1,000 universities over 18 months. I am proud of Intel’s ongoing efforts in education, many of which encourage hands-on learning that inspires the interest in science, technology, engineering, and math that is vital to our success. In 2013, we also invested significantly in our employees through training and development, great-place-to-work and diversity initiatives, and programs that encourage employees to volunteer with local schools and nonprofit organizations. These efforts helped us once again earn a spot on Fortune magazine’s annual “100 Best Companies to Work For” list. Our “shared value” strategy leverages Intel’s assets to address social and environmental issues while also creating business value and increasing our competitiveness. This integrated approach helps us manage our business more effectively and identify ways to apply our technology to benefit society. Our Business and Integrated Value Approach We launched our 4th generation Intel® Core™ processors that deliver industry-leading performance as well as the largest generational gain in battery life in Intel’s product history. 1 To drive strategic alignment with our corporate responsibility objectives, Intel has linked a portion of all employees’ compensation to environmental metrics since 2008. We achieved our goal to manufacture microprocessors that are “conflict-free1.” Intel was one of the first companies to set public goals related to “conflict minerals.” “ Conflict free” and “conflict-free” means “DRC conflict free”, which is defined by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission rules to mean products that do not contain conflict minerals (tin, tantalum, tungsten and/or gold) that directly or indirectly finance or benefit armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) or adjoining countries. We also use the term “conflict-free” in a broader sense to refer to suppliers, supply chains, smelters and refiners whose sources of conflict minerals do not finance conflict in the DRC or adjoining countries. 6 Intel Malaysia’s 2013 Corporate Responsibility Report Cultivating an Ethical Culture Linking Compensation Intel has a long-standing commitment to investing in systems to ensure that the company operates at the highest levels of business ethics and accountability. All employees receive regular training on the Intel Code of Conduct, which directs them to consider their short- and long-term impacts on the environment and the community when making business decisions, and to report potential issues as soon as they arise. In an effort to drive transparency at the site, we also publish a quarterly Site Ethics & Compliance newsletter which contains Code of Conduct cases onsite and shares good and bad ethics and compliance practices with our employees. In early 2014, Intel was once again named to Ethisphere* Institute’s list of the “World’s Most Ethical Companies” for promoting an ethical business culture, exceeding legal compliance minimums, and shaping future industry standards through best practices. To reinforce the strategic importance that we place on environmental sustainability, we link a portion of every employee’s variable compensation—from front-line workers to our CEO—to the achievement of environmental sustainability metrics. In 2013, Intel Malaysia employees earned an incremental bonus tied to improvements in our solid waste recycling rate. Our 2014 environmental bonus metrics will focus on energy efficiency in our operations. Operating with Transparency We build and maintain relationships through open and direct communication with employees, customers, suppliers, communities, and governments. In 2013, we expanded our Explore Intel web sites to provide real-time disclosure and contact information for communities surrounding major Intel campuses in eight locations. To promote transparency in our supply chain, we requested that our top 75 suppliers including those with operations in Malaysia to publish Global Reporting Initiative* (GRI)based sustainability reports. By the end of 2013, half of these suppliers had published GRI-based reports. Promoting Supplier Responsibility While we are known for the quality of our products, we wouldn’t have been able to attain such status without all of our suppliers operating with the same high standards we hold ourselves to. Our number 5 rank on the “Gartner Supply Chain Top 25” in 2013 is a testament to that. Last year, we held our second Supplier Sustainability Leadership Summit in China where we reinforced and clarified our expectations of suppliers and gave them opportunities to collaborate on issues such as working hours, employee engagement, environmental management, and health and safety. In the same year we also launched the Program to Accelerate Supplier Sustainability (PASS) – a program aimed at improving supplier systems through more stringent requirements related to compliance, performance, and transparency. With PASS, we aim to help transform our supplier engagement strategy from one that is primarily compliance-oriented to one that includes more collaborative discussion on the proactive steps suppliers can take to build internal capacity. *Other names and brands may be claimed as the property of others. www.intel.com/apac/csr 7 Intel Malaysia Intel encourages direct communication, risk taking, and the open exchange of ideas essential for innovation. Our safe and respectful culture enables employees to thrive on the job and in their communities. Developing Talent Caring for Our People Our employees are vital to our success and we strive to support their wellbeing and growth in the company. From career development workshops for managers and employees, to various courses on leadership topics, project management, problem-solving and more, Intel Learning and Development aims to offer development courses to meet the needs of our diverse workforce. Our managers can further their management skills with our mini-MBA and manager experiential learning programs, while our employees can showcase their innovations at the ATM (Assembly Test Manufacturing) organization’s Tech Event Conference. The Malaysia Design Center (MDC), a D&D group organization critical to Intel, also runs multiple programs which enable and encourage managers and employees to enrich their soft and technical skills. The MDC also grooms technical individual contributors into Principal Engineers through its Tech Lead program. Embracing Gender Diversity $ 13 Million Intel Malaysia invested over USD13 Million – approximately USD1,700 per employee – in employee training and development in 2013. 8 #1 In 2013, Intel Malaysia was awarded ‘Best Employer’ and ‘Best Employer Commitment to Engagement’ by Aon Hewitt. Intel Malaysia’s 2013 Corporate Responsibility Report 1.2M 41% In 2013, 41% of Intel Malaysia’s workforce participated in volunteer activities and their hours were matched with over USD300,000 from the Intel Involved Matching Grant Program. Diversity in our ranks gives us a better understanding of the needs of our customers, suppliers and communities; and has led us to invest in initiatives to improve the recruitment and retention of our employees. One such initiative is the Women@Intel Network (WIN) – an employee resource group for supporting and developing women at Intel. In 2013, WIN held activities such as the International Women’s Day Celebration to commemorate and inspire working women, the WIN Mentoring Program to grow the careers of female Intel Malaysia employees, and the Leadership Series which featured senior female leaders on topics about promoting yourself, mentoring, career paths and influencing assertively. WIN also participated in the Inaugural Northern Region Women’s Leadership Summit which encouraged women to be bold and to take charge. Another notable initiative is the ATM Technical Women’s League which has helped build a women’s technical community. Emphasizing Health and Safety At Intel we strongly believe that a healthy body is essential for a healthy mind. With fitness centers, stress management courses and other wellness programs on campus, we constantly encourage our employees to stay in tiptop shape in order to work better. In addition to keeping them healthy, we have also improved workplace safety, and the results speak for themselves. Intel Malaysia maintains a world-class safety and performance standard with an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable rate of 0.17 in 2013. In 2013, we also reduced the number of workrelated injuries and the impact it has on our employees with a 20% reduction in recordable cases compared to 2012. There was also a 50% increase in our internal First Aid to Recordable Ratio safety indicator in the last 3 years after we prioritized increasing early reporting of injuries in 2011. The safety indicator tracks the ratio of employees who report injuries early and seek treatment to recordable injuries. Encouraging Volunteerism Engaging our workforce in meaningful volunteer experiences benefits communities while positively impacting employee satisfaction and pride. Each hour that an Intel Malaysia employee volunteers with a school or nonprofit organization, is matched with USD5 from the Intel Foundation through the Intel Involved Matching Grant Program (IIMGP). In 2013, the Intel Foundation donated over USD300,000 – matching a total of 56,557 hours contributed by our 3,730 employees who volunteered in skills and non-skills based activities across 195 Malaysian schools, universities and nonprofit organizations. www.intel.com/apac/csr 9 Intel Malaysia We incorporate environmental performance goals throughout our operations, seeking continuous improvement in energy efficiency, emissions reductions, resource conservation, and other areas. We also focus on improving the energy-efficient performance of our products and collaborate with others to develop innovative ways to apply technology to address long-term sustainability challenges. As of 2013, Intel has obtained LEED certifications for all of its factory buildings in Kulim and Penang because of our commitment to sustainable operations. These certified buildings include: KM1, KM2, KM3, KM5, KM6, and PG8. We empower our employees to take action by funding their environmental projects through the Intel Sustainability in Action Grant Program. Minimizing Environmental Impact Designing for the Environment From 2012 to 2013, Intel Malaysia has implemented more than 50 energy conservation projects resulting in a carbon dioxide offset equivalent to 21,126 metric tons. We have also generated very encouraging results in other areas of environmental conservation including water conservation and solid waste recycling. We saved over 500,000 m3 of fresh water over the past two years with rain water harvesting and recycling the water in our cooling tower system – that’s enough water to produce 200,000kg of rice!1 We strive to reduce the environmental impact of our products, from design through disposal—including evaluating the environmental impact of materials used in our processes, collaborating on responsible management of electronic waste, and driving energy-efficient performance across all of our major product lines. In 2013, we introduced the 4th generation Intel® CoreTM processor family, which delivers industryleading performance as well as the largest generational gain in battery life in Intel’s product history. Operating Efficiently Intel Malaysia Recycling Program As of 2013, all four of Intel Malaysia’s factories and two office buildings in Penang and Kulim are LEED-certified under the Green Building Rating System for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance (EBOM) category. This is an internationally-recognized approval from the U.S. Green Building Council verifying sustainable systems in place and ‘green’ improvements made to the factory building and operations. In the past 6 years, Intel Malaysia has spent an average of USD1 million per year in capital on energy conservation. Our total energy consumption averages over 300 million kWh annually - for a total building gross area of more than 300km2 consisting of four high volume manufacturing factories, design and development labs, data centers, a warehouse, cafeterias, central utility buildings and offices. With so many buildings to keep running, it is imperative for us to be energy and water-efficient - to keep operation costs down and the Earth green at the same time. Since 2001, we have saved over 238 million kWh of energy: enough to power over 948,000 households (based on the average household electricity consumption of 251kWh/month)! We place a great deal of importance in recycling projects both within Intel Malaysia and in the communities around which we live and work. Not only did we achieve recycling rates of 91.23% and 91.77% in our Kulim and Penang sites respectively (exceeding our goal of 90% for both sites), we also removed wastepaper baskets from all our office cubicles, set up 74 ‘We Recycle’ centers, eliminated the use of polystyrene packaging in our cafeterias and implemented a food waste composting program. In the community, we held activities including school recycling competitions involving 13 schools which resulted in 34.6 metric tons of solid waste recycled. The health of local economies—including those where our employees live and work—depends on access to technology and quality education. Transforming Education Intel Malaysia is nurturing the scientists, engineers and technologists of tomorrow by encouraging students to take an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). By making STEM subjects as engaging as possible, we are working to arm students with the knowledge and skills to be the driver of tomorrow’s innovation economy. One of the ways we are reaching out to the next generation is with the LEGO® Robotics program, an initiative driven by Intel Malaysia volunteers in partnership with the Penang State Education Department and the Kulim District Education Department. The program encourages kids of all ages to learn STEM subjects by engaging them with fun activities such as the assembling and programming of robots. Inspiring Young Innovators Inspiring the Next Generation Through the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), a program of Society for Science & the Public, millions of pre-college students from around the world compete each year for millions of dollars in awards and scholarships. In 2013, two Malaysian students won 3 awards totalling USD7,000 for their projects in environmental management and electrical and mechanical engineering. Intel Malaysia’s 2013 Corporate Responsibility Report Intel has touched the lives of over 47,000 youth and adults via the Intel Learn Easy Steps program which aims to foster digital inclusion and raise digital literacy in Malaysia. For many years, Intel has invested in giving social entrepreneurs and innovators the skills and resources they need to improve communities and create sustainable enterprises. Intel® Entrepreneurship Basics (E-Basics) is an example of one of our programs aimed to do just that. E-Basics is a starter toolkit which provides participants with a comprehensive and context-based understanding of key concepts associated with initiating, running, developing and successfully managing an enterprise. The program, tailored for 16 to 25 year-olds, was launched in Malaysia in 2013. In the same year, we announced a collaborative Memorandum of Understanding with Small Medium Enterprise (SME) Bank and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to enhance and develop ICT and entrepreneurial skills for both Malaysian SMEs and graduates. Intel Malaysia has also been a strong supporter of the annual American Malaysia Chamber of Commerce’s (AMCHAM) Young Entrepreneurs (YE) Program since 1997. This community education program enables Malaysian high school students to become entrepreneurs by creating and managing their own companies. Intel Malaysia volunteers mentor the students, sharing the importance of teamwork, sound business acumen and communication skills. Empowering Girls and Women Closing the gender gap in education and technology has an important impact on our business, as it expands our talent pipeline and creates educated customers in new markets. Intel is engaged in multiple initiatives aimed at educating females to create opportunity, inspiring more girls and women to become creators of technology, and connecting girls and women through technology access, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship skills. Intel is also a strategic partner of Girl Rising, a global social action campaign and film that drives awareness and action to address the lack of education for millions of girls around the world. Over time, the number of devices connected to the Internet and each other has grown from hundreds of millions to billions, and the variety of devices also continues to increase. The combination of embedding computing into devices, and connecting them to the Internet, known as the Internet of Things, as well as a build-out of the cloud infrastructure supporting these devices, is driving fundamental changes in the computing industry. As a result, we are transforming our primary focus from the design and manufacture of semiconductor chips for personal computing and servers to the delivery of solutions consisting of hardware and software platforms and supporting services across a wide range of computing devices.
