In Sodankylä, you can experience
the homely flavours, customs
and atmospheres of the heart of
Lapland. Here, you’ll find unique
artisans selling their wares,
a shopping centre, quaint places
to visit and a summer film festival.
1 The Old Church
The old church of Sodankylä is Finland’s best-preserved and untouched wooden church. This church
was built from timber in 1689, commissioned by
Charles XI, who granted 900 copper dollars to the
building project. The planked barrel vault dates
back to 1703. On the inside as well as outside, the
bare wooden surfaces add to the old and stark atmosphere of the church. The altar painting of the
Holy Communion was painted by the Stockholm
artist Petter Bergström in 1730.

2 The Church of Sodankylä
The main church of Sodankylä was built in 1859,
and it was built out of locally-sourced stone. The
altarpiece of ”Christ the comforter” was painted by
Artturi Heickel in 1912. The church serves as the
principal church of the Sodankylä congregation.
Services take place on Sundays at 10 am all year
round.

3 Local Heritage Museum
Built in 1906, the main building of the Sodankylä
Local Heritage Museum is a Kuukkeli house from
the village of Riesto, in the area of the Lokka artificial lake, from where it was moved to the museum
site by voluntary labour in the 1960s. The museum
site also includes numerous other buildings from
traditional Sodankylä industry, such as a workshop,
an Arctic house, a calving hut, a summer house,
barns and part of a reindeer fence, or churn.

4 Museum-Gallery Alariesto
The Andreas Alariesto Museum-Gallery has a permanent exhibition of the Sompio-born painter,
Andreas Alariesto’s life’s work and production.
Andreas Alariesto (1900-1989) was one of Finland’s
best primitive painters. For him, the starting points
of art were the rich folk traditions of his homeland,
from its history and mythology, and from his
own lifetime. Having grown up in both Lappish
and Finnish culture, he had a unique perspective
of Lappish cultural traditions. In addition to exhibitions in his homeland, Alariesto’s art has been
exhibited in Germany, Russia, Sweden, Belgium,
Luxemburg, Hungary and France.

5 Taigakoru Jewellery
Goldsmith/art engraver Seppo Penttinen has
worked in Sodankylä since 1983. The main focus
is on the goldsmith’s own jewellery series, of which
there are now seven. The beautiful Lappish nature
is the common theme in the jewellery series. The
company also makes custom jewellery, which can
be made to the specifications of the customer.

6 Ceramic Workshop Maari
The Ceramic Workshop Maari makes ”raku” ceramic for home decoration. Every product is
unique, just like the elements of nature. The colours, shapes and materials of Lappish nature are an
integral part of the inspiration behind the work.

7 The House of Northern Lights
– Pohjan Kruunu
Feel the magic of the Northern Lights in the Aurora
House “Pohjan Kruunu”! You can admire the beauty of the Northern Lights despite weather conditions or a season. The multimedia presentation will
be projected on the ceiling of the Aurora House.
During the presentation a Northern Light guide
will tell You about the scientific background and
the ancient believes of the Northern Lights.

SIGHTS AROUND
PYHÄ-LUOSTO:
Pyhä-Luosto is a diverse area
spread over two fell-districts.
Visitors to Pyhä-Luosto can enjoy
the landscapes of the national park
around Finland’s southern-most
chain of fells, and Europe’s only
operating amethyst mine that is
open to the public.

Pyhä-Luosto National Park
The Luosto information point introduces PyhäLuosto National Park in the form of a small and
experiential exhibition. The customer service provides excellent hiking tips and topical information
about the park. There are also national park products on sale. The information point is located in the
lobby of Lapland Hotel Luostotunturi.

9 Ahvenlampi, Luosto
Ahvenlampi is situated by Luosto Fell, near the
Luosto tourist resort. There is a 2.8 km trail around
the edge of Ahvenlampi, which is manageable even
for kids. Along the trail there are also camp fire
huts, so remember to take your picnic things!

10 The Amethyst Mine,
11 Kopara Reindeer Park,
Europe’s only active amethyst mine can be found
on the top of Pyhä-Luosto’s Lampivaara fell. You
can choose from a number of tours, e.g. a 5 km
trek leading through forests and across fells or
choose a trail through a swamp and walk on logs.
Once you reach the top of the fell you can listen
to the mysterious story of the amethyst. Next of
course, you’ll visit the mine and search for your
own lucky stone, your personal lucky amethyst.
Come and say ’hi’ to the reindeer on the Reindeer Trail! Along the Reindeer Trail you can find
out about the creatures from information boards
and there are food bowls from which you can
offer the reindeer a little something to eat. In
our cafe, we have home-made snacks and reindeer-related souvenirs. Come and visit!

12 The Chapel of
the Northern Lights, Pyhä
The Chapel of the Northern Lights at Pyhä Fell is
Lapland’s first tourist church. The chapel was designed by architect Kari Ojala and Bishop Olavi
Rimpiläinen consecrated it in 1986. The Chapel
of the Northern Lights is also known for being a
good concert venue. During the tourist season,
the daily programme of the Chapel of the Northern Lights includes Morning Devotion, there are
Good News evenings every Tuesday and Holy
Communion is celebrated on Thursdays.

13 Aittakuru Gorge,
Pyhä
Rugged Aittakuru is hidden in between the slopes
of Pyhä Fell and opens up to a stunning rocky
scene. Aittakuru is by road 9621 between Pyhä and
Luosto. The car park is about 2.2 km from the Pyhä
business centre, on the right-hand side of the road.
It is under half a kilometre’s walk to the gorge.
Aittakuru is a uniquely beautiful natural amphitheatre, where Finnish, Lappish and international
music, both modern and traditional, resounds on
summer evenings. The acoustics of the gorge are
great for small concerts as well as larger events. Aittakuru is also the venue for the Pyhä Unplugged
and Luosto Classic events.

15 Isokuru Gorge, Pyhä
Isokuru is Finland’s deepest gorge. It is situated on
Pyhä Fell, between the Kultakero and Ukonhattu
peaks and has a depth of 200 metres. The very popular duckboard trail at the foot of the gorge runs
from Pyhänkasteenlampi to Pyhänkasteenputous.
The origins of the gorge and the geology of the area
is explained on information boards along the trail.
At the end of Isonkuru Gorge there is a hut, a camp
fire spot and a disabled-access toilet.

Chair lift takes you to the top of Kultakero, to see
the magnificent scenery. We recommend to stop
at Restaurant Tsokka on the top to taste their delicious waffles. Way back you can take the lift or on
foot by the maintance road.
17 Pyhä disc golf range
18 hole disc golf range is located nearby Family
Slopes in Pyhä. Diferce range offers courses between 60-240 meters. You can use your own discs
or rent a disc set (3 discs) from Hotel Pyhätunturi.

PELKOSENNIEMI:
Pelkosenniemi is a small
municipality, but it has a very
rich cultural history.
In Pelkosenniemi you can
still see the traditional
logwood houses.
18 Suvanto village
Situated near Pelkosenniemi, Suvanto is one of the
rare villages in Lapland, which were not burned
down by the Germans in the Lapland War, and it’s
culturally and historically precious buildings are
protected by the National Board of Antiquities
and Historical Monuments. When visiting Suvanto
you should look in at the cafe-art gallery Säpikäs.
Säpikäs is housed in the yard of an idyllic 1930s
country house; the cafe and gallery have been
accommodated in a renovated old barn.

19 The Andy McCoy statue
The statue of Antti Hulkko, a.k.a. Andy McCoy,
stands proudly in the centre of Pelkosenniemi
Parish Village. The 3.6 metre tall monument was
carved out of pine heartwood by McCoy’s uncle,
Matti Hulkko, and was unveiled on 25th of July
2009. Andy McCoy rose to fame as the guitarist of
Hanoi Rocks.

Pirkko Mäkelä-Haapalinna is an internationally
recognised and awarded artist from Kemijärvi,
who mostly paints with pastels. Visit the art studio
located along a beautiful lake shore and hear the
artist herself explain the histories and meanings of
her artwork.

22 Kemijärvi Church, The Old Clock
Tower, and Pine-Flogging Spot
Kemijärvi’s forth church designed by Bertel
Liljeqvist was built in 1951 on the site of a
church which had been burned down in the
war. The altarpiece was painted by Aale Hakala
and Uuno Särkelä, and the bark paintings, are
by Antti Salmenlinna. Within the grounds of
the church there is a Kalervo Kallio statue
(1956), a Freedom War memorial (by Emil
Wickström 1925) to those who died for the
Finnish cause and to the those who stayed in
Karelia after it became Russian territory.

The valuable and old Puustelli, located in Särkikangas, is a lively destination for cultural tourists interested in art. The gallery displays a permanent
exhibition called Sculptures of the International
Sculpture Week from Different Years.

24 Kemijärvi regional museum
Come and learn about the lives of peasants and traditional trades from the turn of the 18th and 19th
centuries. In addition to the impressive main building, the museum has many other buildings typical
of the era. The monument of Hannes Gebhard, the
pioneer of the Finnish cooperative movement, is located close-by, on the same spot his birth home was
located.

The city beach is located close to the city center,
on the shores of the beautiful Lake Pöyliöjärvi. The
great sandy beach and the surrounding green area

Programmes include traditional riding camps for
children and youth, and a ”Country Calling Card”
for families, couples or single travellers. Come and
see horses in the pastures, grab a pitchfork, ride a
