PACKET PICK-UP
From humble beginnings to becoming one of the nation’s best marathons, the Eugene Marathon has always aspired to exhibit
the traits of a great race while staying true to the unique characteristics of the area’s places and people: The Willamette River
and our valley vistas. Historic Hayward Field. Bowerman, Pre and the birthplace of modern running in America.

That heritage and history has brought running enthusiasts young and old of every experience level to our city since our very
first Marathon in 2007. Over the years we’ve welcomed more than 43,000 athletes and runners, applauded nearly 12,000
enthusiastic volunteers, encouraged over 17 million miles of training and witnessed more than 92,000 pancakes eaten.

THE COURSES
THE FINISH
Welcome to America’s birthplace of distance running with a course that’s fast, flat and scenic. Runners will wind through
a dozen parks, miles of riverside trails and enjoy a typical average starting line temperature of 47 degrees.
WE’RE ALL CITIZENS! Drop by the TrackTown USA
Beginning in front of historic Hayward Field, the 26.2-mile course heads through south Eugene, Amazon Park and the
University of Oregon. Following that, runners cross the Knickerbocker footbridge and split from the half marathoners as the
full marathon course turns east toward Springfield. After running through Island Park and past Springfield High School, the
course takes a scenic pass by the University of Oregon’s Autzen Stadium and PK Park. From there, runners return to the
Eugene riverside bike path as it winds through six parks, including Alton Baker Park, Owen Rose Garden and Skinner Butte
Park. Participants next reach the arches at Powell Plaza and the final stretch on the track inside historic Hayward Field
where runners will finish in the footsteps of legends such as Steve Prefontaine, Alberto Salazar and recent world-record
setter Ashton Eaton.

WHO’S RUNNING WITH ME?
PAM FOURIE
DEE RZEWNICKI
Pam Fourie is saving the best for last.
Dee Rzewnicki’s dedication to the Eugene Marathon
runs deep.
Back in 2009 she joined a friendly club near her Houston,
Texas home with the expressed goal of running a marathon
in each of the 50 states. Now, just seven years later, with 49
marathons in 49 states under her belt, she’s set to make it
50 with the 2016 Eugene Marathon.
“When I started, many of my friends had already run
several out-of-state marathons,” says Pam. “But I’ll be the
first one to finish the 50-races-in-50-states goal.”
With a flair for photography and documenting the amazing
moments during her races, Pam most enjoys the more
scenic marathons and looks forward to running along
the Willamette River and soaking in the views. She also
appreciates good local craft beer, something she seeks out
after each race. In Eugene she knows she’ll have a plethora
of places to choose from for her celebratory drink.
She has run the streets and paths of Eugene since she
attended the University of Oregon and is one of the
dedicated runners who has participated in every single
Eugene Half Marathon since the race’s inception in 2007.
Recently promoted to sergeant for the Oregon State Police,
Dee needs to stay in shape for her job and finds her passion
for running a perfect fit. “I run every day,” says Dee. “
In 2015, I ran 2,015 miles.”
And for Dee, running is also a family affair and something
she enjoys doing with her husband, a police officer, and her
son, a former Oregon 4A cross-country state champion.
They all ran the 2014 Eugene Marathon together, where
Dee’s son placed seventh in his age bracket in his first-ever
attempt at the half marathon.
The biggest draw for Pam, though, when it comes to the
Eugene Marathon is the history and running heritage
that’s such a part of the community. A runner since high
school, Pam has always admired Steve Prefontaine and the
TrackTown USA attitude he helped create.
While Dee has competed in five Ironman Triathlons and
over 20 different half marathons through the years, she
looks forward most to traveling from her home in Warrenton
in northwest Oregon to the Eugene Marathon each year
with a shuttle-full of supporters and fans.
“I’m most excited to get to run on the track at Hayward
Field, on the same track that Pre ran on,” says Pam. “I
wanted to finish my goal in a place with some running
history so I had to pick the Eugene Marathon.”
“Even if I couldn’t run the course,” says Dee, “I’d still be on
the sidelines cheering everyone else on.”

2016 The Eugene Marathon celebrates ten years running in
the footsteps of legends.
KEEPING EUGENE GREEN
The Eugene Marathon has long been dedicated to hosting
a responsible event that makes waste reduction, alternative
transportation and other “green” initiatives a priority. Since
2008 when Runner’s World magazine named the Eugene
Marathon one of the “Top Ten Greenest Events in North
America,” we’ve only strengthened our commitment to
providing runners, volunteers and spectators with the most
sustainable and conscientious race possible.
This year the Eugene Marathon is proud to partner with
the Council for Responsible Sport, the world’s leading
consultancy on establishing responsibly produced sporting
events. The Council provides independent, hands-on
verification of not just the environmental-related work
event organizers are doing but also social and community
initiatives. Their past experience with other road races,
including marathons in Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles and
Mexico City, will help make the 2016 Eugene Marathon the
greenest one yet.
Here’s a glimpse of the additional sustainability plans in
place for the 2016 Eugene Marathon:
• Rexius Landscape Services and Supply will serve as
the Marathon’s official Sustainability Sponsor, providing
assistance with waste reduction and turning food scraps
into valuable compost. With the help of Rexius we are also
able to provide “Green Power” for the two day Health &
Fitness Expo and finish festival.
• Together with EWEB and the City of Eugene we are
providing commemorative reusable water bottles to all
participants.
• Participant goodie bags will be reusable and will
include gifts that avoid paper, packaging and other
unnecessary waste.
• Participants and visitors are encouraged to donate
and recycle old running shoes with Soles4Souls at the
Health and Fitness Expo.
• Alternative transportation is encouraged on race day
with free bicycle valet and free shuttles provided by the
Marathon.
