range of Level 3 BTECs. Intermediate (Level

you will need to use for self-managed study,
including preparing for lessons, coursework,
assignments and reviewing your learning.
Staff are on hand in our Learning Centre to
help you develop your skills.
We expect you to work independently for
on average five hours per week for each
subject you are studying. We encourage
you to spend about half of your independent
study time in College. You can access our
Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)either at
College using a College computer, using
the College’s wi-fi network, on your own
laptop or mobile phone, at home, or in a
public library.

our student guidance and support to
be ‘Outstanding’. We provide high
quality information, advice and guidance

Experience
Your journey at Strode’s is just beginning and along the way you will face

Sixth Form College life is exciting but comes
with greater individual responsibility. You will

on courses, to progression on to your next
career steps.
As a designated Sixth Form College,
Strode’s provides a fresh start, with a key
focus on preparation for the next step of
your life.
As a community of around 1500 students
age 16-18, we are large enough to offer

Support And
Guidance
In our most recent inspection report, Ofsted described
our Student Guidance, Support and Educational and
Social Inclusion as ‘Outstanding’.
Our regular student surveys show students value not just
the academic excellence and the breadth of choice that
Strode’s provides, but also the friendly and supportive
atmosphere at the College.
Whilst many students come to Strode’s on their own or with only
two or three friends from their previous school, our size ensures it is
easy to make new friends. We help you to settle in quickly and our
emphasis on care and support means that academic achievement
and personal happiness go hand in hand.
Each student is assigned to a tutor group, with a tutor who they
meet with in small groups weekly and every half term on a one-toone basis.
In addition to formal reports, progress in subjects is monitored
through Individual Learning Plans that set clear targets. These are
regularly reviewed by teachers and tutors. Parents and Carers have
access to online information via the Strode’s Hub.
Mentoring
Mentoring at Strode’s helps to support and encourage students to
manage their own learning and maximise their potential. Students
are mentored by experienced students, matched by subject area.
Mentors meet with their mentee in College and also communicate
by email.
Additional Learning Support
We welcome applications from students with learning needs or
disabilities. We provide expert help with transition from school or
home learning to College. We offer a wide range of support, from
assistive technology, to exam access and arrangements for Guide
Dogs. Please contact our Learning Support Team if you would like
further information about how we can help you as an individual.
Counselling
Our Counsellor meets with individual students who are listened to,
respected and given space to talk about whatever is upsetting or
worrying them. Expressing thoughts and feelings in this way often
helps students to find a more helpful way forward.
Chaplaincy
Our Chaplain supports the development of students’ values, faiths
and beliefs. Students of many different faiths, or none, get involved
in debates and events such as One World Week.

Helping You
Achieve Your
Potential
A*spire
Are you up for being really challenged intellectually? Do you want to meet
and work together with other students who are just as bright as you are?
Are you interested in applying to the most prestigious universities in the
UK and abroad to study the most important and exciting subjects? If this
sounds like you, then join the A*spire programme!
You will have, or be aiming to achieve, a minimum of 3 A* GCSE grades in traditional
subjects, but will probably have around 7. In addition to this you already have chosen to
study at least one facilitating subject at College in September. The level of commitment
demanded by this programme is necessarily high, but you will find the sessions, which will
take place after College once per week, both exciting and thought provoking.
The A*spire programme will help you to expand your capacity to absorb information, and
will train you to think at a level well in excess of that demanded by A levels. Through a range
of varied activities you will gain both the necessary confidence and skill in being able to
articulate your well-reasoned thoughts about a topic or idea given to you at short notice. It
is precisely these skills, in combination with the ability to achieve A* grades at A level, that
leading universities and employers are looking for. The College has sent students to Oxford
and Cambridge to read subjects that span the entire academic spectrum, from Mathematics
all the way to Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic studies.
The A*spire team look forward to meeting you in September!

classroom to make an impact and prepare
themselves for the future. You can develop
new skills for employment and university
through the opportunities we offer.
Students are welcome to start their own
committees or clubs, or join existing groups,
such as the Charity Committee. We are a

Performing
Arts
Numerous theatre visits and workshops enhance work in Drama, Theatre
Studies and Dance.
Swish, one of the College’s theatre companies, which is open to all students,
regularly presents student-devised plays at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
BTEC and A level students write and perform in plays and have taken their
pantomime on tour to local primary schools.
Dance students participate annually in a highly successful show, which this year was held at
The Questors Theatre, Ealing.
Film and Media students have the opportunity to make and present films and run their own
festival of original work each year. These are celebrated at the annual Henry’s Event.
Musicians are encouraged to form ensembles or join one of two Strode’s Big Bands as well
as participating in concerts and giving workshops in local schools. We are twinned with a
music school in Joinville-le-Pont near Paris and the Max Bruch Musikschule in BergischGladbach near Cologne. The annual twinning events are held on a rotating basis in the

Choosing Your
Programme of Study
All students are guided onto a programme of study which is appropriate to
their individual needs.
Many of our students follow one of our Advanced Level Pathways in
preparation for entry either to university, an apprenticeship or directly into
employment. The table on pages 21 and 22 explain the qualifications you will
need to achieve for entry onto your chosen programme of study.
You will be provided with plenty of
opportunities to decide which Pathway
is best for your individual circumstances.
School liaison staff from Strode’s visit many
schools in Surrey and West London to
talk to Year 10 and 11 students and their
parents. If you attend one of our partner
schools in Runnymede and Spelthorne, you
will be invited to a Taster Day in the summer
term of Year 10.
We hold Open Evenings every year at which
you can talk to staff and current students
about the courses we offer. If you decide
to apply to Strode’s, you will be invited for
an interview at the College during which
you will receive advice and guidance about
suitable Pathways and choice of courses.
18
strode’s College | egham
If you accept an offer of a place at Strode’s,
you will be invited to our Introduction Day
in late June where you meet other new
students, start the enrolment process and
attend introductory lessons in the subjects
you have chosen. Finally, once you receive
your GCSE results in August, you will attend
an enrolment interview to confirm your
programme of study.
All students are guided onto a programme
of study which is appropriate to their
individual needs. In choosing your courses,
we need to make sure that you meet the
entry qualifications and that you keep
options open for a range of careers in
the future.
Guidelines to help you
decide which subjects
to select:
•Are you building on your
academic strengths from
school?
•Do the course assessment
patterns suit your style of
working?
•What study skills are required
for the subjects you are
selecting?
•Do the subjects you are
selecting support your future
career / university plans?
•Do the subjects combine well
together?
•What are the general and
specific entry requirements for
each subject?
Student Profile
Name: Usama
Previous School: Jubilee High School
Subjects: Law, English Language, Maths (Statistics)
and French
I decided to come to Strode’s as it has a great variety
of enrichment courses to choose from. I am currently
studying Law, English Language, Maths (Statistics) and
French, which are all exceptional subjects in the way
they are taught. I mostly enjoy Law as it consists of many
different activities – such as the Mooting Competition,
which develops debating skills.
Teachers are very supportive and encouraging as they
individually prepare you for your future. It is also very easy
to approach a teacher or tutor on a one-to-one basis in
case you have any concerns.
Strode’s is a very diverse College with a welcoming
environment which makes it easy to meet new people
and make friends – especially as many students get to
know each other on induction days before College even
commences.
I am the President of the Student Council, which has
been a great experience. Currently my main aims are to
help organise the Leavers’ Do and the Fresher Bash. I
have met so many people through this role – it’s a great
way to be involved in College Life. During my second
year at Strode’s I aspire to help improve the College in all
possible ways with the help of the Student Council.

A Level
All students are expected to follow a full time
programme of study consisting of three core courses

you may wish to add a fourth course to your programme of study,

Student Profile
Name: Mel
Previous School: Fullbrook Secondary School
Subjects: Media Production BTEC, Film Studies
and Photography
Even though my secondary school has a Sixth Form, I felt in
order to grow and mature I needed to leave my comfort zone
and enter a new environment with new people. I thought Strode’s
College was the best choice as at the Open Evening I already
felt welcomed. It’s such a beautiful building and full of the most
diverse people, as well as Strode’s College being renowned for
its academic success – it was such an easy decision for me!
I chose the subjects, because it’s in the career direction I want to
go – Creative Media. When I read about the BTEC at Strode’s, it
literally covered everything I wanted to learn. I’ve been fortunate
enough to be given the opportunity from Strode’s to study what I
want to study – making every day at College a pleasure.
I can’t fault my teachers! They all create a relaxed atmosphere
which makes me feel more of an adult; not patronised like
secondary school! Because of this I think it makes a better
learning environment. Their way of teaching is a lot more
dynamic, for example we do a lot of practicals with cameras.
This gives us the opportunity to familiarise ourselves with the
equipment and provides a taster of what to expect in the industry.
The facilities, specifically media, are fantastic – and allows you to
do practical work with them and even hire them for a weekend!
There’s nothing negative I can say about Strode’s so I would
undoubtedly recommend it.
I’m hoping to do my gap year after College working in resorts
abroad (specifically Egypt) as part of an entertainment year.
After that I’d like to do a degree in Media.

Applying
To Strode’s
We want to give prospective students and their parents/carers every opportunity to
familiarise themselves with our approach to learning and the courses we offer.
Students who attend partner schools are invited to attend a Taster Day at the end of
Year 10. The College will hold its main Open Evenings on Thursday 3 July 2014 and in
October 2014 for entry in September 2015. There are further opportunities to visit the
College throughout 2015, culminating in the Introduction Day in late June for students to
whom we have offered places.
All applications need to be made on-line:
Go to our website: www.strodes.ac.uk
Select ‘Apply Here’. You will then be directed to the ‘How to apply’
page. Click on the ‘apply online’ to start the process.
For help and advice with your application please contact:
Strode’s College Admissions Office

For more information on our Open Evenings
please visit our website.
In recent years, the College has been
oversubscribed and we have introduced a priority
waiting list. We would therefore advise early
application. To be certain of an offer of a place,
students at local partner schools should apply by

What Happens
Next?
After completing an application, you will be invited to the
College for an interview with one of our experienced staff.
The Interview Process
At interview you will discuss your subject choices and be given
extensive advice. It is important that we match these to your
aspirations, abilities and the realities of your career or Higher
Education plans.
Following your interview you will be made an offer of a place, as long
as we have received a satisfactory school reference and we have a
suitable programme for you at the College.
Your offer will be confirmed in writing, together with any entry
requirements for the courses you have chosen. You need to accept or
decline this offer within one month.
Post Interview
Once you have accepted your place you will be invited to our two-day
Introduction Event in late June. It is important that you come to this,
as you will start the enrolment process and attend lessons in your
chosen subjects. In these lessons, you will start the induction process
so that when you come back in September, you are ready to start
learning in earnest!
During the summer holidays, you will receive an enrolment
appointment for the last week of August. You will need to bring your
GCSE results with you. If you need to change one or more of your
