Issue 24 – 17 March 2014
Dear Parents/Carers
The KS4 Options Evening last week was really well attended, and the parents that I spoke to commented on how useful and
informative the whole event was. As parents, we have tried to provide you with lots of relevant information to help you make
an informed choice, including the comprehensive ‘Options Booklet’ which is also available electronically via our website.
th
th
Completed options forms should be returned between Monday 24 and Friday 28 March. In the meantime, though, if you
have any questions or concerns about the options process, please do not hesitate to contact our Deputy Headteacher, Mr
Brophy at [email protected].
This week is National Science Week, a chance to celebrate anything related to science. We will be marking this occasion
across school with special science-related quizzes and competitions, and there will be prizes distributed in assemblies next
week. The PE Faculty are also organising a ‘Sport Relief Mile’ this week, and pupils are participating by running/walking during
their Core PE lessons and donating a £1 voluntary contribution. Pupils are expected to wear their PE kit as usual, as lessons
will continue once they have completed the mile, but they are allowed to wear red accessories, e.g. a red t-shirt, red socks,
red hair accessories. This is only to be worn during the lesson, and no face painting is allowed.
Well done to all Year 8 pupils who really entered into the spirit of their day retreats at Animate in St Helen’s last week, and
congratulations again to all those students who were awarded their RTL stars for last half-term. As this is such a short halfterm it is a real opportunity for any students who have not yet achieved a star to keep all their RTL points.
Thank you for your continued support - 28 school days left until GCSE exams begin. If you ever wish to contact me about any
issue, please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected].

YEAR 10 SCIENCE GCSE EXAMINER'S TIP
Remember 'Metabolic Rate' refers to the CHEMICAL REACTIONS which take place in CELLS. This varies from person to person and
can be affected by your gender, (men generally have a higher metabolic rate) and the amount of activity you do. It can also be
INHERITED from our parents.
YEAR 11 SCIENCE GCSE EXAMINER'S TIP
Make sure you know the word equation for aerobic respiration (glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + ENERGY).
Remember that this takes place in the mitochondria of cells.

PRAYER
Dear Lord,
Help me to see more clearly what I should do with my life.
Give me the courage so that I may not fear what other people think of me,
nor be anxious about success. Let me find the true joy and satisfaction,

ENGLISH FACULTY
“We don’t live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other.”
(Inspector Goole – An Inspector Calls)
Years 10 and 11 are currently busy preparing for their GCSE in English Literature. As part of their revision-programme, the students
have had the pleasure of watching a visiting theatre company performing a version of the play. As a staff we have been extremely
impressed with the depth and maturity of questions asked by the students in the post-show question and answer sessions.
The central theme of J.B. Priestley’s landmark play is responsibility, personal responsibility for our own actions and our collective
responsibility to society.
On May 20th our Year 10 and 11 students will have to answer a question on the play and will be given a mark across six mark bands
for their efforts. To achieve marks in each of these bands, students MUST use quotations directly from the play. They will be
provided with copies in the exam. For now, they all have access to a copy to help with their revision.
QUOTATIONS MEAN MARKS!

YEAR 7/8 GIRLS’ RUGBY DEVELOPMENT DAY FRIDAY 7TH MARCH
On Friday afternoon 14 of our Year 7 and 8 girls went over to Manchester Rugby Club to participate in a girl’s rugby
development coaching session. Leading the session were some coaches from the RFU but also some of the ladies who play for
the club assisted the coaches. They were taught how to tackle, how to pass and taught the basic rules of the game. The girls
thoroughly enjoyed the session and they have a follow-up coaching session in April to look forward to. Below you can see the
girls in action. Well done to Mia Gibbons, Jess Burton, Tara Delahoyde, Jess Davies, Jess Harris, Maisie McGhee, Alex Flanagan,
Chloe Ackroyd, Freya Garvin, Molly Booth, Ellie McCreesh, Niamh Grady, Holly Ellison and Natalie Whitehead
KS4 PE FITNESS PROGRAMME
The KS4 PE programme is starting to begin to come to an end. This year the Year 10 & 11 boys and girls have attended Fit 4 Less
gym on Stanley Green Retail Park and also participated in fitness sessions lead by instructors in school. Some of the sessions they
have endured have been Zumba, Boxercise, Body Combat and Yoga. Once again the programme has been very successful and has
achieved the aims of being enjoyed by all and educating our young people on ‘lifestyle’ based activities with the intention of
encouraging them to keep fit and healthy once they leave St. James’. Below you can see photos of four of our Year 10 pupils Jaida
Madathilethu, Cathlynne Banda, Katherine Newsome and Amber Kelly leading a Zumba class.
