charter school funding formula “broken.”
‘There are a lot of reasons
why we passed this resolution,
but at the core of it it’s a funding issue,’ said Parker. “We can’t
afford to create more charters. We see our district public school staff shrinking compared to last year while more
and more funding is being
funneled to charter school.
This despite our district public
schools being some of the best
performing in urban Boston’”
The Save Our Public Schools
organization applauded the
committee on its “leadership” in
a statement released Thursday.
“We applaud the Everett
School Committee for its leadership in opposing this ballot
question that will do irreparable damage to the best public
schools of any state in the nation,” the statement read. “Everett joins the over 85 other
school and democratic committees, including the Winthrop and Lynn, who have
passed resolutions opposing
Question 2. The Everett public schools are already losing
$6,313,567 to Commonwealth
charter schools this year, even
after state reimbursements. If
Question 2 passes that number could skyrocket even more
since new charter schools
could be opened anywhere at
any time — without the say of
the local community. Across
the state, charter schools are siphoning off $450 million from
district public schools. This destructive charter school ballot
question could take $1 billion
more every single year from local district schools.”
