Tsunami Death Toll Still Rising
It was early Sunday morning, the day after
Christmas. Fishermen were already at sea
off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island.
Tourists, many bleary-eyed from holiday
celebration, were starting to make their way
to Thailand's white sand beaches.
Then, underneath the Indian Ocean
west of Sumatra, pressures along a major
fault line reached the breaking point in a
sudden shift of the earth's tectonic plates. It
was the trigger for the worst natural disaster
the world has seen in decades - a massive
earthquake that sent walls of water crashing
into coastlines from South Asia to Africa,
killing more than 150,000 people in 11
nations.
Five weeks later, the death
toll still rises, thousands of
people are missing, millions
are homeless and people in
devastated coastal
communities don't even know
where to start with rebuilding.
N e e d l e s
o n
seismographs around the
world went crazy, registering
the biggest earthquake in 40 years, a magnitude 9.0
that dwarfed those that devastated Kobe, Japan, ten
years ago and the San Francisco area in 1906.
Buildings crumbled in Banda Aceh, capital of
Sumatra's restive Aceh province. High-rises groaned
from Jakarta, 1,000 miles to the south, to Bangkok,
780 miles to the north.
The shaking stopped, but the worst was yet to
come.
The energy that had been released - some
estimates put it at the force of a million atomic bombs was roiling along the ocean floor at nearly the speed
of a passenger jet. Some scientists speculated that
the entire planet may have briefly shuddered in its
orbit.
Around the world, seismologists debated
whether to issue tsunami warnings but no mechanisms existed to get
out the word. And unlike the Pacific
rim, where tsunamis are a regular
threat, there were no special buoys
to provide an early warning in the
Indian Ocean.
The last major tsunami to hit
the region was in 1883, when the
Krakatoa volcano erupted (AP).
Effective Teacher (Time & Place)
Talking or writing about the teacher
is a bit saddening. A teacher has a
moral and educational message to
deliver. He is or he should be an
educator, a parent, a brother, a
friend, a researcher and a thinker.
He is innovative, creative and
discerning. All these titles and

Administrative Manager
upon him by the society as
appreciation and respect to his great role.
I still remember my school days when I was at
elementary school. There used to be a minimum of
30 students in class. We were seated on a big
carpet on the floor. There was a blackboard and a
solemn teacher holding a long stick in his hands.
Everyday I walked 4 kms to and fro. Nevertheless I
was very happy and never tired or bored. Our
parents’ desire to send us to school to learn was
great and it was a great push forward to us.
A teacher used to have a very strong character.
He was bother feared and respected by his
students. As soon as he stepped into the class,
everyone stood up in a sort of military discipline.
Even parents never dared to disturb him whilst in
class during their frequent visits to the school. They
willingly and contentedly gave him permission to
culture their kids in whatever way he thought was
right. This was the teacher’s image in the past, but
what about today ? Also what about today’s
students ? The future still hides a lot. This age is
characterized by science, technology, openmindedness, unlimited means of luxury and
entertainment, blue-tooth, etc. This generation is
much more fascinated by technology products than
by learning and acquiring knowledge. What matters
most of them is to get a certificate in any way, to find
a job and to get married and start a family.
It’s the responsibility of teachers, parents,
educationalist, religious men, politicians,
psychologists and sociologists to decide whether
what we offer this generation is adequate or not. It’s
their role to judge the suitability compatibility
courses to their real needs.
Are our teachers efficient enough ?
Do they possess the desire and potential to
cope with this technological break-through?
A question that needs three answers !!

Donate to help the sea surge
disaster victims in South Asia
As of today, 165,000 lives were
lost to massive sea surges
devastating huge coastal areas in
the Indian Ocean on 26 December
2004. Most of those having
survived the disaster have lost all
their belongings. Al Anjal
Mr. M.H. Ghouth Administration represented by the

General Director, Sheikh Zaki
Mustafa Edrees and the General Manager,
Mohammad Hamza Ghouth - who held a meeting
with Al-Anjal seniors last Thursday to discuss the
matter- have called on both students and staff to
take part in a donation campaign for the sake of
helping those affected by the tsunamis and the
humanitarian crisis they have created. AI-Anjal
Periodical urges everyone to contribute
generously as every penny will count in that
humanitarian effort.

The noble aim of relieving the devastated families
and children flashed in the minds of the school
children who wondered how they could help
others who lost home, belongings and even
future. It was
agreed with North

which is in link with

Wednesday 12th

both schools could
draw a circle on
the playground
(this would represent
the world) and the students could bring in coins to
place on the circle to complete a ring of coins. In
the middle, “Al Anjal School and North Reddish

INTERMEDIATE SOCIETY - INTERMEDIATE SOCIETY
To achieve our academic goals
and prepare our students to pass
Cambridge and TOEFL exams
with the highest scores, Al-Anjal
has adopted a new policy this
school year. We combine teaching
both Cambridge exams and two of Hamdi Abdul-Aziz
English Supervisor
the most renowned course: HBJ at
the elementary level and Green Light at
intermediate and secondary levels. The yield is so
far satisfactory and gaining admiration from
parents, students as well as teaching staff.
Registration for Cambridge exam has become
compulsory and additional English classes have
been assigned to cover the material given. Initial
evaluation of the process is encouraging and we
are determined to make it a continuous success.
Any parental comments will be considered with
the utmost concern. Please, don't hesitate to
contact us in that case . ( AP)
Creativity in our Schools
The technological break-through that
characterizes our age calls for us not to
stand still and not to remain just
recipients of other’s creations.
This is the case nowadays. We are
just users of others’ products in all

science. As educationalists, we should
look for student creativity as he is the most important
side in the whole educational process. We should
pave the ground for him so that his talents can be let
out. This shouldn’t only be confined to the learning
process, but it ought to cover all fields in which he can
produce and create. Thus, we can have more creative
minds like Beethoven in Music Pele and Renaldo in
Soccer, Shakespeare in Literature, Ibn Sina in
Medicine, Picasso in art and many others.
It’s our message to guide our students towards
success and to teach them how to thin creatively.(AP)

An Invitation to Read
By: Fahad Sagr (2-D)
It is generally admitted that reading
broadens the mind. There are many
books you can enjoy reading. One of
these is "Silent no more". It is Paul
Findley's most challenging, complex
and enthralling book.
The congressman, Paul Findley's trip to South
Yemen to plead for the release of an imprisoned
U.S. citizen started him on unexpected journey
through the World of Islam that continued for
twenty-five years and inspired him this book.
Paul Findley, the author of "They Dare to
Speak out", chronicles his far-flung trail of
discovery, the false stereotypes of Islam that
linger in the minds of the American people, the
corrective actions that the leaders of America's
seven million Muslims are undertaking and the
community's remarkable progress in main
stream politics.
So, this is an invitation to enjoy reading this
important book about Islam written by an
American Christian politician.
AI-Anjal Distinguished Excursions
Pursuant to the directions of the supervisor of AlAnjal schools and the principal of the secondary
school to arrange different excursions that satisfy
the students' needs in the secondary stage, an
excursion to the desert was arranged.
The aim was to make
students feel confidence
and yearn the environment
of life in the past . The
students' impression was
incredible. About forty
students rushed to
participate in this particular
excursion. They enjoyed driving 4WD cars in the
golden sand. Many students showed great ability
and skill in driving such cars in such places. The
gaiety of the occasion was the main factor that
made it successful. The excursion was
supervised by: Mr. Hisham Othman, Mr. AbdulAziz Al-Ahmari, Mr. Abdul-Rahman Al-Ghorashi
and Mr. Tawfeeg Al-Ghorashi. (AP)
Death Toll in Asia
By: (Faisal Addas 2-C)
More than 150 thousands of people
were killed and tens of thousands
were reported missing in an
unprecedented catastrophe caused
by the recent earthquake in the Indian
Ocean. Entire cities were devastated by the huge
waves and thousands of villages were demolished
as well. The nature destructive power of tsunami
wiped an entire Thai village off the map. The
economic disaster is enormous. Damage in the
infrastructure is huge, too.
Main four Asian countries were profoundly
affected: Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.
Other countries like Kenya, Sultanate of Oman and
Somalia were also affected.
Donations are collected allover the world by charity
organizations. Also, aid is given by many countries
but the Arab aid is the biggest among all.
universities in and outside Saudi Arabia take
place. School excursions also head for different
universities and educational organizations. This
term, a group of 20 students supervised by Mr.
Hamdi Abdul-Aziz, English Supervisor, attended
an orientation presentation about universities in
the UK. The presentation was hosted by the
British Council on its premises at Al-Farsi Center
in Jeddah. Students expressed their pleasure
with such fruitful visits and programs which they
find of great importance for them especially at this
crucial time of deciding upon their future career
options. (AP)
Being a smart tourist
By: Rami Samargandi (2-C)
There are several things you may do to have the
best vacation you can imagine.
Cities and places that attract many tourists can
be fun. These places can also be hectic and
dangerous. Here are some tips on how to be a
smart tourist:
* Use traveler's cheques to protect against your
money being stolen. No one can spend a
traveler's cheque but the person who bought it.
Also, if traveler's cheques are lost, they can be
replaced at little or no cost.
* Tour cities on special tour buses. This is the
easiest and quickest way to get an overall view
of cities you are visiting. Then you can decide
which places you want to take a closer look at
later in your trip.
* Look for discounts and bargains to help you
save money. Sometimes it is easy to ask the
local people of the area for more information
on good deals.
Certain part of town may be well known for
variety of merchandise and bargain prices. You
will probably find these areas to be full of
interesting and unusual people as well. Don't be
afraid to discover real personality of a city.
TYPES OF STORES
By : Rayan Fakeeh (2 B)
Convenience store. Convenience
stores can be found in most
neighborhoods. A convenience
store sells some groceries, snack
food, gasoline, and a few things for
the house and car It is a quick-stop
store for when you’re in a hurry.
Grocery store. A grocery store sells groceries.
Groceries include food, personal-care products ,
cleaning supplies , and paper products.
Supermarket. Like a grocery store, a
supermarket sells groceries But it may also sell
many other things, like car supplies, furniture,
yard-care products, hardware supplies, and toys
Many supermarkets also have a bakery, a small
restaurant or delicatessen, and a pharmacy.
Drugstore. Drugstores sell personal-care
products and medicines They also sell cleaning
supplies, paper products, yard-care products,
and a few kinds of food Drugstores always have
a pharmacy where you can get special
medicines.
Department store. Department stores have
many different sections (called “departments”)
that sell things like clothing, furniture,
appliances, dishes, and toys.
Discount stores and factory outlets. Discount
stores are a mixture of drugstore and department
store They sell many different kinds of products
at prices that are lower than department store
prices. Factory outlet stores are owned by
companies that make products They sell their
own products for less money than you would pay
at a regular store.
Specialty shops. There are stores that sell one
kind of product-like sports supplies, shoes,
cooking supplies, or books.
