American Legion Fund Raiser
Halloween Car Show
This was our 2nd annual car show to raise funds to rebuild the American Legion Post 79. Sometimes it seems that
all we do is ask our members and business people in our
community for donations. Unfortunately it takes money to do
the projects we get involved with. After several years of raising funds to rebuild the Evergreen Cemetery, we found another project that was in bad need of our help. The American
Legion is where we have our monthly dinner meetings and
the hall was in pretty bad shape. After last year’s show,
Dave Bertino, who has been heading up this project and
working his butt off for the place, got a lot accomplished. He
was honored by the American Legion as Man Of The Year.

Old Farts Ride of the Issue
Car of the Issue
This is Ray Carr’s 1940 Studebaker Champion Business Type Coupe. Ray
bought the car after he retired in the fall of 1990. This was his first adventure in
hot rodding. That just proves you are never too old, or young for that matter to
like hot rods. He paid $1000.00 for the car with no engine and trans. When he
first saw the car he thought it was ugly because it had been sitting for so long
and had rust on it. He had to use his imagination to see what the finished product would be. A few fun facts about Studebaker, they started by building wheel
barrels and cover wagons in the gold rush days. Their front end suspension is
what GM used as a base for some of their Corvettes.
Ray wanted to do a complete frame off build of this car, so he along with
his buddy Barry Liggon, removed and either rebuilt or replaced every part on
this car. It went back together with a Mustang front clip. It has a Ford Maverick
rear end and is powered by a GM crate 350/300HP engine

The front wall of the hall was all but falling down and the windows were in
terrible shape. Thank you to Old Fart Steve Johnson for all the electrical work
he has done. If you have not seen the improvements made join us on the 2nd
Tuesday of every month at 6:00pm for tacos and an Old Fart get together.
We still have a long way to go with the hall. Next
will be a complete rebuild on the restrooms and to
make them handicap accessible. Then we are going
to have air conditioning installed. Both of these will be
major projects that are going to be expensive. With
everyone help we can make this possible. Let your
friends, neighbors, relatives and business people know that we will accept donations all year long. They can be made out to, American Legion Post 79 Construction Fund, and mailed to Wayne’s Engine Rebuilding Inc. 2200 Business
Way Riverside CA 92501. You never know some people may have more money to donate to charity at different times of the year.
As far as the show, it was a success. We
want to thank everyone who helped, and there
were a lot of you, without everyone’s support we
could not do this. We have added a list of people
and business’s that bought trophy’s and sponsored
the event with donations.
A personal note, Manual & Susa Zamora and Henry & Janene Hemborg
donated money for a trophy sponsorship and they did not get made. I dropped
the ball and did not have them on our list. Also Rich Mehas had his name
spelled wrong on all his trophy’s. I felt terrible and offered their money back,
buy being the great people that they are they told us it didn’t matter and they
didn’t want the money back. They just wanted to help out. That’s what makes
the Old Farts such a great club. We put community and helping people first. I
am proud to tell everyone that I am a member of the Old Farts and we are
opening up a lot of eyes as to what we stand for.
A special thank you to Surfer Dave for always being there for us with his music and being our “MC”, we
love you Dave, you the best!!!!!
Thank you,
Mark G

along with a 700R trans. The original upholstery was done in a beautiful grey
color at Quality Upholstery in Colton by Ernie Mangus, yes Ron’s brother. The
tilt steering column is from a Cadillac and the gauges were rebuilt by United
Speedometer. The body was painted Indian Porsche Red and the car sports
American Mag chrome rims. Cruising he gets 20 MPG. Ray wanted to build this
car to be driven, and it has all over the country. He now has 300,000 miles on it.
The car made its maiden voyage on July 1st 1992, back to Ray’s
hometown of Durant Ok. His mother had been waiting to see it. He took her all
around in his new ride and she loved it. His mother was 88 at the time. In 1997
there was a National Rally at the original Studebaker factory in South Bend Indiana. Ray got a second place award for modified cars. He was one of a few
participants who drove there. The rest were trailered.
A Few years back Ray took the car up to the top of Pikes Peak, 14,110
feet high. They don’t allow cars all the way to the top, but Ray wanted a picture
so he had Margaret stand watch for him while he snuck up there. If you get a
chance, sit down and talk to Ray about this beautiful car. He has some great
stories and you will be entertained.

Open House at TED’s Rod Shop
Around the corner and down the block, old and new
friends and customers crowded the parking lots of TED's
Rod Shop for the 5th Annual Open House. The biggest
crowd yet, enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs, chips --and of
course the Free Ice Cream-- as everyone inspected, examined and marveled
at the auto art of Riverside and surrounding
areas.
From shiny paint
jobs to rusty metal; from muscle cars to
bombers, the variety of cars offered something for every car enthusiast's taste.
This is
the second Open House at TED's new location
on 6990 Jurupa Ave. and was held just prior to
the shop's expansion. To meet the increasing
demand for TED's attention while maintaining
TED's standards for excellence in custom auto work
in a timely manner, TED's is taking its business
to the next level - expanding the shop area and
adding two new craftsmen to the crew, each
with vast experience in custom cars. Markie,
owner and builder of the

"Purple People Eater", a 30's coupe
with a blown and injected alcohol
Pontiac engine; and Brad, an LA
county certified welder with lots of
fuel injection experience.
The crowd pleaser of the evening was Sean Rodgers' waist high
rat rod.
As darkness set in, the rat rod
took on new dimensions as its owner, Sean, showed off the rod's eerie
red headlights and flame throwing exhaust pipes.
The raffle prizes offered something for everyone as well --from tools and
the usual caps to free spa visits and advertizing thongs-- Yes, women's thong
underwear! You can always expect the unusual and unique at TED's.

Cruizin for the Cure 2013
The Cruizin for the Cure 2013 in Costa Mesa was fabulous, and so
was the weather, on September 28,2013. We had a small group show up,
and we had plenty to eat, drink and see. This show is for prostate cancer
awareness, so there were plenty of guys standing in line to have theirs
checked. The show was sold out with a total of 3,500 cars.
The OFRT's that showed up were: Billy/Ester Nelson, Don Nelson,
Dave/Mary Nelson, Ray/Margaret Carr, Lila/Earle Casteloes, Mary/Harry
Alford, Rich/Karen Mehas, Bob Graham, and Dan/Patsy Welch. As the day
went on, and we found ourselves shopping and vendor cruising, Lisa/Larry
Wikert, Patsy/Mick Hammer, Tom/Jetta Miles and Yvonne/John Calvert
showed up.
There were plenty of vendors both for the gals and the guys. Lots to
see and do, along with several places to eat. But the best part was the socializing, drinking and shopping. We all had a great time, and will probably
do it again. Maybe we
can have a LARGER
group show up, and
make sure people
know that the Old
Farts Racing Team
Car Club showed up.

Day of the Dead Car Show
Rubidoux High School's Route 66
car club held its third annual "Day of the
Dead" Car Show on Saturday, November
2nd at the Glen Avon Heritage Park in Jurupa Valley. The kids from the high school
out did themselves with a record crowd
and always unique trophies. More than
100 cars participated on a bright sunny
day with lots of raffle prizes, music and
vendors. Only one food vendor made
eating a challenge but we all survived.
Several Old Farts won awards including Billy Nelson, Penny Pichette,
George Kilger for Best of Show Custom, and Susan and Manual Zamora for Best of Show - Muscle Car (aka
Penny Newman's Pick).
More than 40 Old Farts attended winning the trophy for the
largest Car Club Participation
beating out the Classic Tins, West
Coast Customs, Lords, Auto
Butchers, Cadillac Kings, Shifters,
Poachers, and The 13 Saints.
All proceeds from the show
go to scholarships for the Rubidoux High students.

American Legion Construction News
As you can tell the old American Legion is taking shape.
Right after the car show, the floors in the hall were sanded and
refinished. The floors came out beautiful. We will not be doing
any work at the Legion until after the holidays. At that point we
will be replacing 3 more windows and re working the west wall
in the hall due to water damage. After that we will move onto
the bathrooms in the hall. Even with tough times we were able
to raise over $11,000.00. Thanks to all of you that gave money, bought shirts, bought raffle tickets, and sponsored trophies.
Thanks again,
Dave B. #182

Hot flames, coool fridges ‘n’ due propers
By “Rotten” Rodney
Y’all know what this is? It’s “writer’s
block” and I’m here to testify that the condition is real. Like a few other Gaseous Gazette
staffers, I just received my looming deadline
notice—like last time—and the time before
that. And once again, I have nothing even
close to prepared. Heck, I don’t even
‘member what we talked about last time! Let’s
revisit the May/June/July issue and see
where we left off, shall we?
Oh yeah! Y’all ‘member this from page three?
Doreen is the lucky winner of a Painter Mike-customized
kitchen appliance. How many of these really see kitchen
duty? Customized refrigerators are generally found in
garages. Over the years, Painter Mike has generously
donated his time and talent to create these coveted prizes for Old Farts Reunions as well as Show ‘n’ Go.
There’s a good number of ‘em out there now, and my
good friend Louie just so happens to have one in his secret man cave at Budget Transmissions. While relaxing
there afterhours one day last week I couldn’t help admiring Mike’s layout, smooth blends and mirror finish. Bein’ a modern, energyefficient model, Louie’s fridge works well and despite the hot flames, what
comes out is always cold.
As an artist’s canvas, a brand new, undented refrigerator might require minimal
disassembly and thoughtful masking, but they’re easier to prepare than cars.
And there is a connection as customized refrigerators have been a part of our
car hobbies for years. A year or three ago, McPeak ‘n’ McEniry collaborated on
a stunning late-model fridge for Show ‘n’ Go—as some o’ y’all may recall. But
let’s dig deeper and examine the roots of fridge-rodding.
Souped-up refrigerators are nothing new. Uncle—uh, (it’s

Grandpa now) Larry Wikert has a mighty fine ‘50s-vintage General Electric,
complete with a functional keg-o-rator conversion and flames. But next time
you’re at Ed Martin Garage, check out the art gallery on the building’s east wall.
The prominent, pinstriped Crosley Shelvador door was a gift from Gormo years
ago.
So where is this leading? Right about now, some
o’ y’all are thinkin’ ol’ Rotten’s givin’ too big a
buildup for what’s to come next, but maybe not
this particular time. Let’s dig a little deeper yet,
and see.
Behold the Holy Grail of customized refrigerators!
This, my flatulent friends is certified authentic—
the real deal. This 1955 Crosley Shelvador is the
very appliance that Von Dutch and friends kept
stocked with—uh, beverages.
So, who’s Von Dutch? If you ask someone who’s
wearing the trademarked flying eyeball on the
street today, they’ll likely tell you: “he’s a California clothing designer.” Inside the kustom kulture
that he created, however, Kenneth Howard, AKA
Von Dutch is perhaps best known as the originator of modern pinstriping. The decorative striping that once came standard from auto manufacturers’ assembly lines had
died by the late ‘30s—it was over. By the late ‘40s
however, Von Dutch had picked up the brush. One
line at a time, he began to revive the lost art, ultimately bringing it back to life in ways no one had
ever imagined. Today, every dagger-dragger in the
pinstiping profession owes something to Von
Dutch—not Von Dutch the clothing designer, but
Von Dutch the artist, the ‘striper, the gunsmith, the
machinist, the mad scientist, and genius.
Even though it was never kept inside, the “Dutched”
Crosley Shelvador was included

with ‘striper, Steve Kafka’s purchase of the now-restored Von
Dutch bus. As determined by appraisal, this ol’ fridge is valued at
$46,000—and it just so happens to
be available.
I’m here in Phoenix, by invitation
to write a longer story that will likely pay squat, yet I’m richer for the
experience. I never met the late
Von Dutch, but I’m honored now to
know his friends: Lyle Fisk, Butch
Tucker, Steve Kafka and Dick O’dette who told me: “I put a lot of beer in that
refrigerator. I took a lot of beer out of it too.”
As y’all may imagine, touchin’ this
handle gives yours truly chills—and
not just ‘cause it’s attached to a refrigerator either. Is this 1955 Crosley
Shelvador responsible for the entire
custom-painted, pinstriped refrigerator phenomenon? While it’s a possibility, we don’t know that for sure.
What we do know for sure is; it’s up
to us to carry on.

Gray hair- that’s something that I didn’t have an overabundance of back
in ’94 when Uncle Gormie signed me up to be an Old Fart. In ‘94 my driver’s
license listed my hair color as brown. Things change over the years and my
driver’s license now lists my hair color as gray. The Bible says that “The glory
of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendor of the old” (Proverbs
21:29); so I guess its O.K. to be proud of my gray hair. I’m not using the word
proud as in being boastful, but as in being honored. I’m proud (honored) that
the Lord has allowed me to survive many adventures – some with guardrails
involved – to live long enough to have gray hair!
I’m proud (again, honored) to be an Old Fart. As I was looking at the web
site Drag Racing Online, I was pleasantly surprised to see a picture of an Old
Farts Racing Team canopy under the heading of “Telling it like it is” (11/06/13)
– I thought to myself – Hey, I’m a part of that!
Now, I know that you don’t see a whole lot of me at Fart Functions and
scheduling/geographical conflicts play into that, but I am proud (honored) to
serve when called upon in a sort of Chaplain Capacity. I have been blessed to
officiate at the weddings and funerals of some Old Farts; as the gray hair factor increases, the funerals seem to out-number the weddings and that’s O.K.
because I know that those people that have “gone on” before us are doing just
great now. I know that the people that I’m referring to are doing just great because of their faith – not because of how “good” they were and they truly were
good people, but because they realized that faith in Jesus – not good works is
what saves us and that makes this gray-haired Old Fart not proud (boastful)
but humbled.
Please feel free to contact me @ 951-317-0680 if I can be of service to you.

WOW ! Where has 2013 gone? It seems like a couple of weeks ago
we were at a Christmas party and it's almost time for another one. I guess
the old saying is true that time flies when you're having fun. We just had
the second rebuild the American Legion show and it was a big success.
Fund raising shows are something we have always had a talent for. I have
no idea how much money we have raised for projects and charity over the
years.
Probably the most visible of these projects to date is Evergreen Cemetery.
The shows we did there helped raise money to build a fence and put in an
irrigation system. Being the oldest cemetery in Riverside the oldest section did not have perpetual care so it was not being taken care of. Now
when you drive by it looks beautiful. Now I do need to say we did not do it
by ourselves. There were several local groups putting on fund raising
events and we were proud to be one of them.
Now we have moved on to rebuild the American Legion building at
Fairmount Park. We have been associated with the American Legion almost as long we as have been around. We have held our reunion there
every year since 1995. We also have our monthly meeting (taco Tuesday)
in the legion hall. Any of you who have not been by to see the improvements should go by and check out how it's looking. It is really a good thing
to be associated with people like the American Legion and work on projects like this one.

Welcome To All New Old Farts !!
Welcome all new members to the Old Farts Racing Team! Our sole purpose is to have
old fashioned drag racing fun. You do not need a car to have fun, come with someone
who is participating, be a spectator, or build your own car. Gatherings are held on the
second Tuesday of every month, at the American Legion Hall #79 at Fairmont Park in
Riverside. We have no club officers. We have what we call “meetings”, or bullshit sessions, for lack of a better term.
