The club has rented a 5’ x 10’ storage unit
at Royal Storage in Lewisville for three
months. If anyone has a place to store
our car show stantions, signs, table and a
few chairs, please let Tom Atchison know.
The club could also purchase a small storage
shed, if someone has space for that. A location
between I-35E & US 75 and between 190 & 121
would be ideal. Thanks to J.C. Cherry for storing
our stuff in his paint shop up til now.
We are off to a new year and
we had a great turn out at the
AutoRama with four beautiful
Corvettes and a lot of members
going thru the show and spending some time working the
display.
Document Shredding: The Texas Attorney General’s Office reports that 98,390 Texans were victims of
Identity theft in 2009. According to the Federal Trade
commission, as of 2009 Texas ranks third in the nation
for reported identity theft complaints per capita. Paper shredding is a safe and secure way of preventing
valuable information from getting into the wrong hands.
You can help protect yourself from identity theft and be
“greener” at the same time by bringing unwanted personal documents to free Shred-a-Thon events hosted
by AAA Texas, Experian, and Cintas. On April 23, from
10 AM to 2 PM, members may bring up to five banker’s
boxes or five paper grocery bags filled with junk mail,
tax records, and other personal papers for shredding
at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth and at the
Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown. For more information, contact your local AAA Texas branch. Looks like a
good way to get rid of all your old personal and office
papers and make room for more.
Next event coming up is our March meeting at
Texas Land & Cattle Steak House in Richardson Saturday 12 March 11 AM. Brunch Sunday 20 March Mimi’s

The club is producing a Color Pictorial Directory
for our club members so that we can get to know
each other better. We all know that we identify each
other by our Corvettes... not our names. This directory will put faces, spouses, names and Corvettes
together and hopefully will make a stronger club.
The club’s pictorial directory is ready for members
to proof and approve.
We may need you to supply a photo of you and
your spouse (if applicable) and pictures of your
Corvette(s) even if they’re under construction.
The information that we’ve used are taken from
your Legends Membership Application. If that info is
no longer correct, you can change it or email current
4
information and photos to [email protected].
We value your privacy and plan to print copies of
the directory to be given only to current members.
We’re asking members to also agree to not release
the personal information included to anyone outside
the club.
If you prefer not to have photos or certain information included in our membership directory just
delete that info from the proof copy.
The information we want to include is: Name
& Spouse, Address, City, State, Zip, Home Phone,
Work Phone, Cell Phone(s), E-mail addresses,
Corvette info: year, color, model, Are you an armed
forces veteran?, Employer(s)
Street Rod and Custom Vehicle Bill Reintroduced in Texas
SEMA model legislation (H.B. 890) that would create a vehicle registration classification for street rods
and custom vehicles and provide for special license
plates for these vehicles has been reintroduced
in the Texas State Legislature. H.B. 890 defines a
street rod as an altered vehicle manufactured before
1949 and a custom as an altered vehicle at least 25
years old and manufactured after 1948. The bill has
been referred to the Texas House Transportation
Committee for consideration.
We Urge You to Contact All Members of the
Texas House Transportation Committee Immediately
to Request Their Support for H.B. 890
H.B. 890 provides specific registration/titling
classes and license plates for street rods and customs, including replicas. Street rods are of a pre1949 vintage; customs are of the post-1949 era.
H.B. 890 allows for the use of non-original materials and creates a titling and registration criterion
that assigns these vehicles the same model year
designation as the production vehicle they most
closely resemble.
H.B. 890 only holds street rods, customs and
replicas to the equipment standards specified by law
during the model year listed on the title of the vehicle.
H.B. 890 recognizes the immeasurable amount
of time, money and attention automotive enthusiasts
invest in their hobby cars. Street rods, customs and
replicas are the same crowd pleasers that participate
in exhibitions and as parade vehicles, and whose
owners regularly contribute to charities and civic
events. This legislation represents an opportunity to
acknowledge this family hobby and to protect it for
future generations.
DON’T DELAY! Please contact members of the
Texas House Transportation Committee of Representatives to urge support for H.B. 890. Please e-mail a
copy of your letters to Steve McDonald at stevem@
sema.org

When does the 13th turn into the 13th?
It is when you have two friends over to help you do
some simple things to your ’65 Corvette “Vettezilla” on
a great Sunday afternoon before the annual AutoRama that starts next weekend. We announced that we
were doing an impromptu mini weekend wrench at my
house and folks laughed, when they asked how many
people it took to change a transmission dip tube.
Evidently those folks have never tried to remove an
automatic dip tube from a C2 Corvette. I think it might
be easier to pull the engine as only the transmission
line, bell housing firewall, spark plug wire brackets,
coil, and distributor cause interference! Oh well, Sam
and Albert are coming to help and there is much more
to do if all goes well and we have the time.
For starters there is the starter. I have had a reoccurring issue with the car not turning over when it’s
hot. It’s caused by, what I believe, is heat sink to the
starter. I decided enough was enough after replacing
the third starter. I purchased a really nice looking gear
reduction mini starter that was guaranteed to solve all
of those issues.
We got Vettezilla up on four jack stands in the
drive way to enjoy the sun and Sam and Albert were
removing the old starter as I unpacked the new one
and shouted STOP as we hit the first issue.
Every small block Chevy starter I have ever
touched in forty-six years of working on cars and
countless starters have a large lug for the battery
cable and a smaller “S” and “R” terminal. The gear
reduction starter had the large lug and ONE small
terminal and no instructions. Did I mention this was
Sunday afternoon and every speed shop, including
the one where I purchased the starter, is closed? So a
phone call to Captain Tom. After much deliberation, I
decided I would not sleep well wondering if the starter
was overheating and Vettezilla went up in smoke and
flames in my garage, which happens to be next to my
bedroom which happens to be where I sleep!
So, I decided to abort the starter change and we
re-installed the old starter. I will call the speed shop on
Monday to see if I have the wrong starter. If Captain
Tom was correct, if I should have asked the “Great
Karnak”, or if I should have known what to do and still
been able to sleep. So rack one up for the starter being a stopper.
Next we tackled the transmission filler tube. This
one has leaked from day one, and after replacing the
O-rings twice it still leaks. I had purchased a Milodon
flexible filler tube assembly from the same speed shop
and, yes Legends members...
8
IT TOOK THREE GUYS TO REMOVE THE OLD
FILLER TUBE!
Sam was underneath trying to pry and push to
get things to clear. Albert was handing tools to us
both. I had my vice-grips on the top part of the tube
using blocks of wood, etc. to bend the tube that was
not made to be removed, while any part of the car is
still intact pulling and bending from the top.
It went well right after the right bank of spark plug
wires and all of their brackets, air cleaner assembly,
coil, and other extra bits were removed and just the
right angle and good fortune smiled on us right before we pulled the distributor.
The new flexible tube has double O-rings so
hopefully this will solve the issue. If not, I see a fivespeed in my future as a fix.
Albert had made a nifty tool to help install the
new flexible tube, since you couldn’t tap it from the
top into place. Remember it was flexible? With only
about an inch and half of clearance, I installed the
tube from the bottom and Albert guided it from the top
as Sam handed tools to me. Once it was close and I
used the special tool, since my hands wouldn’t fit in
an inch gap, the new tube clicked twice into place.
Now what do we do to secure the top of the tube,
so I don’t pull it back out of the transmission when
checking the fluid level?
Luck was with us. There was a stud on the firewall
right near the tube bracket, that I has going bolt to
the head, but it didn’t work out. A spare nut from my
parts bin, and it was secured and solid.
Hey, one out of two isn’t bad today and things are
looking up.
Since we didn’t change the starter, and it was still
early we decided to go ahead and replace the rear
spring with the new one I got at Duntov Motors here
in Dallas the other day. Sam and Albert had the old
spring off pretty quick, while I was finishing up the
engine area by reinstalling everything we removed to
remove one simple transmission filler tube.
We cleaned all of the threads on the old spring
mounting bolts and rolled my brand new spring under
the differential and started jacking it into place. Man
this spring looks good and I can tell it is really going
to stiffen up the rear of the car once we are finished.
Only one small issue... The bolts will not reach the
differential They must have shrunk, because they
need another half inch to even reach the differential...
Let alone screw into the lonely waiting nice clean
threads!
We lowered the spring and pulled it back behind
the car. It looks like we might see the problem and
a tape measure quickly confirms what our own eyes
have seen. The new spring, where it mounts, is about
half an inch thicker than the old one. Say it ain’t so
Joe!
Ok, no problem, I’ll just run to Home Depot and get
some grade 8 bolts that are longer and all will be well
. So I take off to Home Depot. Did I happen to mention
that Home Depot carries every bolt size and length
EXCEPT 9/16! So like a guilty puppy dog I come back
with my head hanging knowing what we are about to
do.
Yep, you got it. We get to reinstall the old spring
and put that all back together. Man we are having fun
now! After about thirty minutes we have the old spring
back home. Monday I will call Duntov and ask if this is
normal or if the mounting kit includes longer bolts.
Now we’re one out of three! Yeepee.
The good to bad ratio is increasing, because while
I was at Home Depot, Sam installed the new 14-inch
mahogany steering wheel. I’d purchased a couple of
weeks ago off the Corvette Forum, and it looked great
IMHO. The smaller circumference with a larger diameter grip area of this wheel, along with the Bergeson
12:1 steering conversion we did last year, should really make Vettezilla steer quicker now and I can’t wait
to drive her later this week.
I would have taken her out now, but it’s about five
o’clock and I owe for my good friends help. My brother
pulls up just as we are cleaning up to see if we could
use some help. Then we all headed off to the Golden
Corral for dinner and some great bench racing.
Hate you missed the fun. Weekend Wrenches; try
‘em you’ll like ‘em.
Yours truly, Rude Dog and Vettezilla.

All four participants in our club
display at the 2011 Autorama were
rewarded with a ‘Best in Class’
plaque. Participants were Tom Lainson (61 convertible), Ken Dobbs (63
split window coupe), Jack Hayes (65
coupe), and Joel Joseph (71 coupe).
Set up and take down of displays
went well due to the help of the four
participants, Tom Douglas, Tom Atchison, Sam Deneault, Ron Spurlock,
Gary Spurlock, all under the barely
adequate supervision of Jerry Echols.
There were two unsolved mysteries of the weekend. The spectators
enjoyed chiming in on the mystery of
the weekend, which was the question
“Help! What color is it?” (Referring
to the paint color of Jack Hayes’ 65
coupe.) The best color guess by a
spectator was “midnight green.” The
second mystery has several suspects
but no arrests have been made on
who made the sign... That investigation is currently headed by Jack
Hayes. Any information you have
regarding this case will surely be appreciated by our lead investigator.
I would like to thank all who
helped and appreciate all members
who came out to support the participants at the show.
