Time Passes Quickly:
By: Mrs. Mac
We are approaching the end of another
school year in “light speed”! This year
has been one filled with ups and downs,
hard work and fun times, a few failures
and huge gains; as are all school years.
We learn from our mistakes and apply
those lessons in our future. I am so
grateful to be a part of this great school
filled with wonderful faculty, staff, and
students.
My student staff has performed impeccably. I am extremely proud of the diligent work done, as they have molded
themselves into experienced reporters!
We have covered a wide range of sub-
ject matter this year, and I
think they have done so well.
As always, I hate saying good
bye to my fifth graders: Jacob
Aparis, Blake Scruggs, Grant
Gregory, Mary Fowler Parker,
Sam Dupler, Laura Ramirez,
and Trenton Ramsey. But I also
know that my fourth graders
will step up to the plate, and fill
their shoes as they serve as
role models for newcomers.
Thanks, staff for a wonderful
year!

Where is She Now…..
By: Mary Parker
We have a famous author
living in Chesnee, and I bet many
of you, your parents, and your family knows her. She taught English
at CHS for many years, and is now
sharing her wealth of knowledge
nationwide! Who is our latest celebrity; Mrs. Louise Scruggs!
Mrs. Scruggs began her professional career as a high school English
teacher. She taught English and literature at CHS for 29 years and
was the school’s secretary for 4
years. She said that she has always
enjoyed writing, so it was a natural
way to go after retirement. In, fact Mrs. Scruggs earliest memory
of writing was in third grade when she and her friend wrote homemade valentines for their class.
On February 24, 2013, Mrs. Scruggs enjoyed a book signing party in the CHS Library. The title
of her book is “Benjamin Bradley
Benton, a Curious Fellow”. It is illustrated by Terry Taylor, from New
York City. Her story is about a young
boy named Ben who is very curious
about the world he lives in. This book
supports our Common Core State
Standards, and has a parent guide included. It also has story time activities
to enjoy the back.
When asked if she would change anything about her book
writing experience, Mrs. Scruggs said only that she wished she
had written it sooner. She learned that it takes a lot of time to write
books, and you are always changing words or adding on. Mrs.
Scruggs says that she would like to write another book in a higher
grade level, and might just let Ben grow older. She also has drafts
of other books and poems that aren’t published yet.
Mrs. Scruggs says that she is living
a dream she has had for a long time. Her
advice to us is to enjoy the adventures of
Ben and take time to be curious in our
own world. Being the successful writer
she is, she also suggests we read all kinds
of books and many different authors.
Meet Cailey Gardener……….. she was
on the newspaper staff here at CES the
years of 2004-2005 and 2005- 2006.
She is now a senior at Chesnee High
School (12th grade.) Her favorite subject is Yearbook, because she has been
given the opportunity to be the editor.
She said that she “gets to create memories captured throughout the year,
while guiding and helping my classmates do the same”. When asked if
she remembered an article that she
enjoyed doing the most she answered,
“I sure do! I’d have to say it is a tie
between ‘Mrs. Mac loves to sing’ and
the article on Dr. Mercer. With both, I
got to interact on a personal level with
my subjects outside of school. I got to
see Mrs. Mac sing at a concert in
Gaffney in her choir and I was able to
meet the superintendent at his office.
Both of these are very special memories of my newspaper staff days.”
Cailey says that she’s not very athletic
at all. However,
she loves photography and
designing on the
computer. Being
able to create
using technology
interests her so
much, that she
one day hopes
to pursue a career in Graphic Design! This is Cailey
Gardener and” Where She is Now”!
Kids in the News…..Artist Champ…..Kayleigh Hipps
The person that our art teacher, Mrs. West, picked for this
issue as our “Artist Spotlight” position is Camden Burns. He
is ten years old, and in Mr. Wease’s homeroom.
Camden has never been in Mrs. West’s Gifted Art class,
but you would never guess that when looking at his art
work! His favorite subject in school is social studies with
Mrs. Flynn, but, he says he loves to make things in art!!!
Camden Burns
This piece highlighted is called “Fish under the Sea”. It is
a clay fish that he painted, drew lines on it to make a pattern, and then he had to fire it in the kiln twice. Camden
chose to use red and green for the colors on his fish. Camden used the following medium for this sculpture; raw clay,
paint, glaze, paintbrush, kiln, pencil, and a scoring tool! He
said he thought about how it would look after he got done
with it, and what colors to use. It took him several weeks to
finish his project, but it came out to be one of his best!!!
When asked how he felt when Mrs. West said that what we
were going to be making was a fish, he said he felt awesome! He said he said he felt awesome because he knew it
would not be hard to do. Camden Burns said he was very
happy with his outcome!

Meet the Dollar Bill
By: Sam Dupler
Do you know how much thought was put into the $1 bill? You might be in for a surprise, it took
quite a few years for the dollar’s design to be made up and passed by congress.
The First Continental Congress requested that Benjamin Franklin and a group of men come up
with a seal for the 1$ dollar bill. They spent 4 years trying to perfect it. After that they spent 2 long
years getting it approved to be on the dollar. Yet some parts were not added until years later.
If you look at the left circle you’ll see a pyramid. Notice the face is lighted. Also, the
western side is darker. That is to symbolize that the country was new and it was
the beginning. The pyramid is uncapped to show that the country was unfinished.
The number 13 is important on the $1 bill like there’s:

Boys and Girls Club Basketball Team
By: Jacob Aparis
The Boys and Girls Club Basketball Team had a very successful season this year. The season began in
January, and they played 9 games before ending with a tournament in March.
Mr. Ricky Crane, a Boys & Girls Club worker and a
substitute teacher here at CES, coached this year.
He did an outstanding job! The team won 6 out of 9
games this season. Mr. Ricky said “I am very proud
of how hard everyone worked. They represented our
Boys and Girls Club chapter well.”
Players had to keep a C average in class. They also
had to keep a behavior folder from all three of their
teachers and the club. Behavior rules were stricter,
but it paid off in the long run! Check out our team in
the team photo.

Welcome The New Teachers
By: Katelin Brooks
We have three new teachers at Chesnee Elementary. There’re Mrs. Ryann Byrd, Mrs. Kendra
Bailey, and Mrs. Stephanie McSwain. To me I think they are very interesting, but that is just
my opinion. Read on and see what you think.
To begin with, Mrs. Byrd went to Boiling Springs High School and graduated in
2006. Also, she was in drama and color guard. She then went to the University of South Carolina. She chose to become a teacher because she wants to
make a difference in the lives of her students.
Secondly, Mrs. Bailey went to Spartanburg High School and
graduated in 2007. Then she attended Lander University.
She also had many helpful teachers in school. Mrs. Bailey
has always wanted to teach, and she loves working with children. She says
that “ I want all of my students to reach their highest potential, and to
know I am here to support them.”
Finally, Mrs. McSwain went to Chapman High School. And then she went to
Converse College. She said, “I love watching kids “light up” when they “get”
something.” And she wants her students to know that she cares about
them. She takes an interest in their personal lives by going to cheerleading
competitions, gymnastic events, football games and more as often as she
can.
So that is their story. I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did. Thank you
Mrs. Bailey, Mrs. Byrd, and Mrs. McSwain for letting us learn about you.

Do you know how to spell hypothesis, or history, how about harmony? Just
ask the 14 contestants who had a great spelling match on January 16, 2013.
The participating grades were 4th – 5th grade. The two final contestants were
Michael Paslawski, an ESOL student here, and Camden Burns, both 4th grade
students. There were many rounds as our spellers competed. The spelling bee
went through 10 rounds and the winner was... Camden Burns. Preparing for
the spelling bee took a lot of practice, as there was a page full of words that
students had to study. The winner, Camden
Burns, went to compete at the Regional Spelling
Bee on March 2, 2013. This Bee had participants from Spartanburg, Cherokee,
and Union Counties. There were 72 participants ranging from fourth to eighth
grade in the Regional Spelling Bee. Congratulations to Camden Burns for placing 6th in the Regional Spelling Bee. Listed below are the contestants from
our school who participated in the CES Bee:

Presenting…
“Practically Peter Pan!”
By: Blake Scruggs
The Storyline…
The cocky, but loveable Peter Pan invites Wendy, John, and Michael to Neverland; teaching them to fly
and guiding them over the oceans to this fantastical realm of lost children, pirates, and Indians. There,
Wendy enthusiastically takes up the role of chiding, but loving mother to Peter and his young companions,
the lost children, in their underground home…
But not everything is perfect in Neverland… Captain James Hook, an educated but dastardly pirate, is Peter Pan’s arch-nemesis and is set on his destruction. He is hampered in his dreadful course only by his fear
of a crocodile that once ate one of his arms and now wants the rest of him. Hook knows when the crocodile is near thanks to the ticking clock in its belly…
5th Grade… A smashing success!
Not only, was the whole Chesnee High School
Auditorium full, but everyone did a fantastic job!
Mrs. Willis, the 5th grade teachers, the 5th grade,
Mrs. Mac, and The Baillie Players helped the fifth
grade prepare and perform “Practically Peter
Pan”, a wonderful play!
After the play, Mr. Martin of the Baillie Players
remarked “This production has been a smashing
success. Also, all of the actors and actresses were
wonderful! The lessons learned while working on this play will be carried on through their careers and remembered for the rest of their lives!”
We would like to wish a special thank you to Mrs. Willis, Mrs. Mac, Mrs. McAllister, Mrs. Anderson, Mrs.
Wall, and The Baillie Players for making this a special memory in everyone’s lives!
What? This is Work:...What Happens in Newspaper Staff
By: Kymiah Blair
Have you ever wondered how we get our newspaper all together? It is real team effort and we
work hard to produce a good product. It takes about 4 weeks just to gather all the information we need.
About 3 more weeks are needed to get the rough draft completed and edited. Another few weeks are necessary to type it up and block it. We only meet once a week for 40 minutes, and it takes several steps to
do this. Read on and I’ll explain the whole process.
We start each new paper with a brainstorm session. It is called a round table meeting. Mrs. Mac
will have article suggestions, and make a list of our ideas. We also have some articles that recur each issue, like Coach’s Corner and Artist Spotlights. After articles are assigned, we use interview sheets, information logs, and article outlines to organize our information. Then, we write rough drafts. All of us help
each other get our drafts right, and Mrs. Mac is there if we get stuck. At this point we type our final draft
into a word document .We can take pictures or get some from the internet. And, we can use graphics from
Microsoft Word or Publisher. Mrs. Mac copies our final and pastes it into the Publisher template. Then, she
makes copies on the school copier. Finally, we work together to fold and deliver the papers. Mrs. Mac puts
a digital copy on our webpage and on the P: drive here at school, too, online
It takes about 12 weeks in all to get a paper start to finish. Maybe even more if the issue is long.
We must all work together and help each other to produce a good product. Being a staff reporter is fun,
but it is also W-O-R-K.

monitor saw two students came out of the bathroom- Kelly King and Cary Carlyle. The paper was
used to stop up the toilet in the bathroom. Immediately after the flood, the suspects were searched
for any toilet paper that was left behind… each girl didn’t have any leftover paper on them. 10 fingerprints from each girl were lifted from the scene and you have examples… Who did it?

Family Pets
By: Morgan Ryan
Have you ever felt like the lone wolf in your house? Well, you won’t once you get
a family pet. I would like to introduce the needs of family pets. 1. They can comfort people. 2. They are fun to play with. 3. They are great at entertaining people.
To begin with, pets are great at comforting you. Pets are helpful to comfort you
because they lick you. They also snuggle upon you. They are like a best friend;
they are always by your side. Sometimes, the pet you own will hug you in their
own little way.
Then, pets are fun to play with. They are fun to play with because they can
play Tug-o-War (which any animal can play all of these). When you play Tug-o
War with them, they make playful growling noises. You can also play fetch
with them. When you tell them to bring the stick back, be careful. (If you’re
not a fan of drooling\scratching you have been warned.) But that’s not all.
When it snows, you can throw snowballs at them. Note: Some pets are smart enough to dodge
snowballs.
Finally, pets are awesome entertainers. They will be jumping all over the place, doing flips and
barking. They will eventually yip and cry, then when they land, they will be looking around vigorously like “What’s going on around here? Why is everybody staring?” Family pets also do tricks.
They like to show you that they can sit, stay, lie down, and always land on their feet.
Well, I hope I helped you decide to get a family pet. If you were lonely, remember, you don’t have to be a lone wolf anymore------- get a family pet!
WWE…..BY: Trenton Ramsey
If you want the best, you got the best; just watch WWE. You’ll see all of
your favorite superstars, shows, and arenas. Watch and see all the excitement, action and especially the fights! You can see John Cena, Sheamus,
Randy Orton, The
Rock and tons more.
After you watch this, you’ll be on the edge of your
seat. On
Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. But if you can’t go that
long without wrestling, just order the WWE channel. Then you can always watch your favorite matches and superstars. Especially, if you like
all the old matches and wrestlers, such as (Stone Cold) Steve Austin,
Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan all battling for the championship.
There are over 150 wrestlers to watch and enjoy in action. Just take my advice; if
you like wrestling you will love WWE. Yes, action out of this world in a short 2
or 3 hours. So turn on the TV, grab a cold drink and some
popcorn, and watch WWE.
