Fighting Hunger through Sustainable Livelihood Development 2016 Implemented by UMCOR Armenia Foundation Anahit and Hocob were with us three years ago in Mineral Point. We had designated funds to their region. re. Success Story The winter is over. Gomk and Sers communities are awakened. It is not easy to cope with given limited resources, with no employment opportunity and struggling with nature and its challenges. The community members live with thoughts about daily bread, heating, availability of water which freezes during winter time and counting the days to reach spring which comes very late to Sers. Despite all challenges the residents withstand them with their positive attitude continuing traditions of their parents and ancestors not leaving this small community. Their roots are deep in this land. “Here we are with our mountains,” they say jokingly. The house of Smbat Harutyunyan is at the beginning of the village, the first shabby house. His family with five members was targeted as a low income family with two members with special needs. They received 15 chickens and a rooster and 750kg of grinned corn and barley. Impaired hearing and physical limitation were not obstacles to have a wonderful family, loving wife, two beautiful daughters - Hasmik who is 13 years old and Hamest, 16 years old - and a son passing his military service in the army. The name Hamest means “humble” and Hasmik is “jasmine”. Both young girls are like flowers of these fields. They dream of becoming a teacher and a doctor and coming back to native village and helping people of their community. When meeting the family, there is always a loving atmosphere. Its members are so respectful and supportive towards each other. Gohar, mother of the family, is 48 years old. She proudly brings gathered eggs and says words of gratitude to all FRB people who have thought of helping families in Armenia from thousands of miles away. “The chickens are very productive. Every day we collect 8-10 eggs from the coup. It is such a joy for my youngest daughter to feed the chicken and then collect the eggs during a day. Now we do not buy eggs anymore. I envision expanding my farm and have more chicken. When my son arrives from the army I know that he can have fresh meals,” said Gohar, with eyes so full of hope and vision for future. She is one of active beneficiaries of the program, always present in the trainings with her questions on feeding and general management of her farm. 1.
