Chelsea Orthopaedics specialists Speciality: Foot and ankle Mr Sam Singh MA MRCS FRCS(Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Sam Singh is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital. After completing orthopaedic training in London, Mr Singh undertook further sub-specialist training in foot and ankle surgery at Harvard University. He offers the latest techniques for treating conditions such as bunions, ankle sports injuries and arthritis. Mr Singh’s specialities include all foot and ankle disorders including sporting injuries, fractures and sprains, bunions and hammertoes, nerve and tendon disorders, arthritis of the foot and ankle, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, flat feet and ingrowing toenails. Mr Rohit Madhav MBBS FRCS(Tr&Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon After graduating from St George’s Hospital Medical School in 1990, Mr Madhav undertook basic surgical training at various hospitals throughout south east England. After gaining a fellowship in surgery, he joined the Imperial College London Orthopaedic training programme. During this time, he also undertook sub-specialist training through various fellowships, including a combined Orthopaedics Plastics fellowship in trauma lower limb reconstruction at Charing Cross Hospital, a foot and ankle fellowship at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, and visits to foot and ankle specialists in the USA, France, Switzerland and Holland. Speciality: Hand and wrist Ms Alice Bremner-Smith MBBCh BSc FRCS(Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Ms Bremner-Smith trained in London and Bristol. After completing training in Orthopaedics & Trauma Surgery, she obtained two years’ specialist experience in hand surgery in Oxford, London, Sydney and Paris. Ms Bremner-Smith currently works as a Consultant Hand Surgeon at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and holds private clinics at The Lister Hospital and Chelsea Outpatient Centre. She treats a wide range of hand and wrist problems like Dupuytren’s disease, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, ganglions, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. She also treats trauma to tendons, nerves, soft tissues, fractures and joint injuries. Mr Jonathan Compson MBBS BSc FRCS FRCS(Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Jonathan Compson is a specialist in wrist and elbow injuries and non-traumatic conditions, hand fractures and soft limb conditions and soft hand tumours. His special interests are in scaphoid fractures, wrist injuries, small joint arthroscopy, elbow injuries and arthritic elbow. He is an expert in small joint injuries and lectures on all these conditions on an international scale. Mr Compson’s research interests include carpal fractures and associations, anatomy of upper limb radiology and arthroscopic surgery. Speciality: Hip and knee Mr Ajeya Adhikari MBBS MS(Orth) MCh(Orth) FRCS (Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Ajeya Adhikari is a leading Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon based in South West London, dealing primarily with lower limb conditions with a special interest in knee surgery. He is a high volume knee surgeon and is in the top decile nationally in terms of the number of patients treated. He has pioneered the use of computers and robotics in orthopaedic surgery in the UK and is actively involved in the culture of cartilage cells and transplant for cartilage injuries. Mr Simon Bridle MBBS FRCS(Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Simon Bridle was appointed as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at St George’s Hospital in 1995 and practices privately at The Lister Hospital and Chelsea Outpatient Centre. He is active in clinical leadership at St George’s, having been Care Group lead for Orthopaedics (2004 – 2008) and Clinical Director for Surgery (2008 – 2010). He is currently Clinical Director for Major Trauma. His surgical practice includes lower limb joint replacement and knee arthroscopy; he continues to contribute actively to the trauma rota. He focuses on primary hip and knee replacement and revision hip surgery and has a particular interest in complex acetabular revisions and revision for infection. He has been the team doctor at Richmond Rugby Club since the professional era. Mr Richard Field PhD FRCS FRCS(Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Richard Field qualified from Westminster Hospital in 1980. After house jobs at St Stephen’s Hospital, Chelsea and Senior House Officer posts at University College Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, he completed a PhD at Cambridge University. Mr Field is one of the UK’s most experienced practitioners in arthroscopic hip surgery, muscle sparing hip replacement, hip resurfacing and complex hip replacement. He undertakes approximately 500 hip operations per year. His current research interests are in patterns of hip instability, the pre-clinical and clinical evaluation of new implants, outcomes and surveillance studies in joint replacement surgery and health economics. Mr Charles Gibbons MBBS FRCSI FRCS Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Charles Gibbons is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in hip and knee replacement and arthroscopic surgery of the knee. He undertook basic surgical training in Bath, Chelmsford and Stanmore and was appointed to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in May 2002. Mr Gibbons has a special interest in unicompartmental knee surgery and arthroscopic ligament knee reconstruction. Mr Ian Holloway MBBS FRCS(Tr & Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Ian Holloway is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in hip and knee surgery. He trained in London and was a senior trainee at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. He spent a year in Australia completing two specialist hip and knee fellowships in Sydney and Melbourne. Mr Holloway specialises in surgery for sports injuries of the knee and primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery. His NHS appointment at Northwick Park Hospital allows him to undertake complex revision surgery, often for periprosthetic fractures (fractures around joint replacements) and for cases with significant bone loss. Mr Paul Jairaj MBChB FRCS(Eng) FRCS(Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Mr Paul Jairaj qualified in Medicine from the University of Birmingham. He completed his basic surgical training at St Mary’s Hospital, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, The Royal Postgraduate Medical School at The Hammersmith Hospital, The Mayday Hospital and Hillingdon Hospital. In 1997 Paul started specialist training in Trauma & Orthopaedics as a Specialist Registrar on the Imperial College Scheme in North West Thames region. Paul was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in July 2003, and was then entered onto the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council. His speciality is arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery of the hip and knee, with a special interest in sports injuries, computerguided surgery and joint replacement using custom-designed implants. Mr Jig Patel MBBS FRCS(Tr & Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Jig Patel graduated from Southampton University Medical School in 1992. His orthopaedic surgical training was based in major London teaching hospitals and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. He spent a year on fellowship in Ontario, Canada where he specialised in hip and knee surgery. He was appointed as an Orthopaedic Consultant at King’s College Hospital in 2002 before moving to University College Hospital in 2004. His interests include hip and knee disorders as well as computer assisted joint replacement surgery, arthroscopic knee surgery and minimally invasive fixation of fractures. Mr Warwick Radford ChM FRCS(Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Warwick Radford is a senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and at The Lister Hospital, specialising in orthopaedic conditions affecting the hip joint. His area of special interest is hip surgery, both primary and revision procedures, as well as some hip arthroscopy. He has also been involved in the development of image-guided surgery for hip replacement and is one of the first users of 3D pre-operative planning in the UK. Mr Giles Stafford MBBS BSc(Hons) FRCS Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Giles Stafford specialises in hip and knee surgery, especially arthroscopy and young adult hip disorders. His NHS practice is at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre, the UK’s highest volume orthopaedic hospital. He is specifically interested in hip arthroscopy, management of sports hip injuries and cartilage preservation techniques. He teaches regularly on hip arthroscopy courses. He also performs primary and revision hip replacement, with emphasis on bone conserving and high performance designs. Mr Stafford’s knee practice is based mainly on the arthroscopic treatment of meniscal and cartilage injury (including repair) and arthritis. He also has a keen research interest, publishing in peerreviewed journals and presenting at international meetings. Mr John Timperley MBChB FRCS(Ed) D. Phil (Oxon) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon John Timperley completed his postgraduate education in several Centres of Excellence in the UK including the Exeter Hip Unit under Robin Ling OBE. He was awarded a British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) grant and the John Charnley Research Fellowship to travel to Centres of Excellence in North America as well as a Johnson & Johnson Fellowship in Ohio, USA. Mr Timperley completed a PhD at Oxford University and his research interest continues in the academic Hip Unit in Exeter. He is supervising several higher degrees in collaboration with Bath University and is a member of the Educational Advisory Board for the Homer Stryker Center in New Jersey, USA. He lectures on hip surgery extensively both nationally and internationally and is Honorary Secretary of the British Hip Society, as well as elected member of Council of the British Orthopaedic Association. Speciality: Pain management Dr John Outhwaite MA(Oxon) BMBCh FRCP Consultant in Pain Medicine John Outhwaite qualified from Oxford University in 1979 and served five years in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He worked in rheumatology teaching units in Birmingham and London and has been a consultant physician in Orthopaedic Medicine at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre for many years. Dr Outhwaite’s particular interest is in patients with complicated problems and persistent painful conditions which have not responded to simple treatment regimes, and are not suitable for surgical treatment. These include whiplash injury, persistent low back pain, complex regional pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, and knee and foot pain. He provides comprehensive exercise techniques and functional restoration programmes. Speciality: Radiology Mr Muaaze Ahmad MBChB FRCR Consultant Radiologist Muaaze Ahmad completed basic surgical training and, after developing an interest in orthopaedics, he trained as a radiologist. Following his registrar training, he spent a year in Melbourne, Australia as a fellow in musculoskeletal imaging, which enabled him to further study imaging of orthopaedic and rheumatologic diseases. Since his appointment as Consultant Radiologist at Barts and the London NHS trust, Mr Ahmad has continued to work in musculoskeletal imaging, working closely with the sports and exercise medicine team. He has also supported research projects in treating tendinopathy. Dr Rosy Jalan DMRD MBChB FRCR Consultant Radiologist Rosy Jalan has been a Consultant Radiologist at Barts and the London NHS trust for eight years. In the last five years, she has been Lead Clinician in musculoskeletal radiology and runs a service with three other consultants, providing a secondary and tertiary service to large orthopaedic and rheumatology departments. Dr Jalan has undertaken all forms of complex diagnostic imaging involving MRI scanning and ultrasonography. She performs interventional procedures under image guidance such as biopsies and injections. Her particular interest is in sports injuries and she provides diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for all forms of sports injuries. Dr Jalan is in charge of infection control and provides core teaching in radiological techniques to postgraduates and sports medicine specialists. Speciality: Respiratory and general medicine Dr Lieske Kuitert MBChB PhD FRACP FRCP Consultant Physician Lieske Kuitert trained in New Zealand and the UK, completing her PhD at the National Heart & Lung Institute, University of London in 2001. She is currently a respiratory consultant at The London Chest Hospital, Director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis service and Bronchiectasis service. She was Clinical Director of the Specialist Medicine Clinical Academic unit until February 2011. Dr Kuitert has led the Respiratory Disease Outreach team for ten years. This team pioneered a new concept in home management of COPD patients and admission avoidance. In 1999 she developed and led an outpatient DVT service for the diagnosis and management of DVT (and now PE) which has been replicated by Trusts around the UK. Speciality: Rheumatology Professor John Axford DSc MD FRCP FRCPCH Consultant Rheumatologist Professor Axford is a Consultant in Adult and Paediatric Rheumatology and Emeritus Professor of Clinical Rheumatology at St George’s, University of London. He has worked within the NHS for over thirty years. He developed and launched an integrated musculoskeletal service, The Hotung Centre at St George’s Hospital in 2002, which is now an internationally acknowledged centre of clinical excellence. Dr Alexander Brand MBBS MRCP Consultant Rheumatologist Alexander Brand is a Consultant Rheumatologist at The Lister Hospital and Clinical Lead for Rheumatology at Chelsea and Westminster, where he’s been based since 2002. His undergraduate training was at St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School and he undertook rheumatology training on the Charing Cross/Hammersmith Hospital rotation. Dr Brand spent two years researching the aetiology of inflammatory arthritis at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology. He currently runs a very busy General Medical and Rheumatology firm. Speciality: Shoulder and elbow Mr Andrew Forester BSc(Hons) MBChB FRCS(Ed)Orth Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Andrew Forester’s NHS base is at Charing Cross Hospital and he holds private clinics at The Lister Hospital and Parkside Hospital. Dr Forester is a Consultant Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon, with a particular interest in arthroscopic surgery, treatment of recurrent shoulder dislocation, frozen shoulder and rotator cuff pathology. Mr Ali Narvani MBBS MRCS(Eng) FRCS(Tr & Orth) MFSEM(UK) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Ali Narvani is a Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon specialising in shoulder and elbow surgery at Ashford & St Peter’s NHS Foundation Trust. He trained in London and was awarded two prestigious fellowships in shoulder and elbow surgery. He lectures both nationally and internationally and continues to teach and supervise the training of postgraduate shoulder and elbow surgery for Specialist Registrars. Mr Narvani’s interests include open and arthroscopic shoulder and elbow surgery, including tendon repair, stabilisations, trauma and arthroplasty (joint replacement). He has completed an MSc (Distinction) in Sports Medicine and is a member of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (UK). Mr Eyiyemi Pearse MA FRCS(Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Eyiyemi (Yemi) Pearse graduated from Oriel College, Oxford in 1995 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree, and an honours degree in Physiological Sciences. He was an Orthopaedic Specialist Registrar on the South West Thames rotation and developed an interest in shoulder and elbow surgery when he worked with Paul Calvert at St George’s Hospital. He undertook a fellowship at the renowned Reading Shoulder Unit where he worked with Ofer Levy and Stephen Copeland. Mr Pearse is also interested in arthroscopic knee surgery and he undertook a fellowship at the North Sydney Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre, Australia. Mr R Andrew Sankey MA(Cantab) FRCS(Tr & Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Andrew Sankey studied at St John’s College, Cambridge and then St Mary’s Hospital, London, and qualified in July 1997. He trained as a Specialist Registrar in Trauma & Orthopaedics on the University College Hospital/Middlesex rotation in London. Mr Sankey spent 12 months sub-specialising in, and researching, upper limb surgery at the Shoulder Unit at St Mary’s Hospital and the Department of Biomechanical Engineering, Imperial College. He completed his sub-specialist training at the Shoulder Unit at University College Hospital. Speciality: Spine Mr Colin Natali MBBS FRCS FRCS(Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Colin Natali is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who is fellowship trained in spinal surgery. His practice is exclusively the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the neck, thoracic and lumbar spine. Particular interests include back pain, neck pain, prolapsed intervertebral discs, whiplash syndrome and spondylolisthesis. Surgery includes open and minimal access surgery. Mr Natali is the Medical Director of a Rehabilitation Clinic called Back2Normal, the Programme Director for the Orthopaedics Registrar Rotation at the Royal London Hospital, a Senior Lecturer for Undergraduates at Queen Mary Westfield College and a Medical Advisor for several Insurance Companies. Mr Adam Way MSc MBChB MRCS(Eng) FRCS(Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon Adam Way is a fellowship trained Consultant Spinal Surgeon, whose practice is solely related to the diagnosis and management of spinal problems. Throughout his orthopaedic career, he has focused on becoming a spinal surgeon and spent two years in the Spinal unit at RNOH, Stanmore, followed by a further year’s advanced spinal fellowship. He is Consultant Spinal Surgeon at Frimley Park Hospital, Surrey. His practice concentrates on neck and lower back pain and his surgical practice centres on the use of minimally invasive techniques. He performs the full range of spinal operations including injections, vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty, cervical disc replacement and lumbar microdiscectomies, decompressions and fusions. Speciality: Sports Medicine Dr Catherine Spencer-Smith MBBS DRCOG MRCGP MSc MFSEM Consultant Sports Medicine Physician Catherine Spencer-Smith qualified in 1995 from St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and trained in Sports Medicine at Bath University. She has treated a wide range of patients, from Olympians to the occasional exerciser. She was a Sports Physician at the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and has worked with GB rowers, track and field sports, marathon, endurance and outdoor adventures sportsmen. Cath now works entirely within private medicine, and is the founder of ‘Sportdoc London’, a specialist sports medicine service based at 31 Old Broad Street (City of London), The Platinum Medical Centre at The Wellington Hospital and Docklands Healthcare (Canary Wharf). Cath has recently established a multi-disciplinary clinic for the diagnosis, treatment, surgical care and rehabilitation of young adults with hip and groin injuries at Chelsea Outpatient Centre.
