the FIBT Pr esident...
We are pleased to present the 10th edition of the International Bobsleigh
and Skeleton Federation’s Media Guide. This will be the first time that the
guide has been published on a CD-Rom, a process that will also allow the
entire contents to appear on the FIBT’s Internet site (www.bobsleigh.com,
www.fibt.com, www.skeleton.info).
The FIBT enjoyed a successful sporting season in 2003-2004, but it was
one that saw tragedy as well as triumph. The inaugural combined FIBT
World Championship in Königssee was an exceptional move forward for
our sports, well-attended and watched by millions across the globe. On the
down side was the loss of Italian bobsleigh great Eugenio Monti and the
shocking death of German women’s bobsleigh athlete Yvonne Cernota.
Eugenio defined our sport for generations and in a real sense was the
archetype for the modern Olympic sportsman. Yvonne’s tragic loss
reminds us all that sport involves real challenge, with tangible risk, and
that those who seek its rewards are special members of any society. Both
will be sorely missed and always remembered by the FIBT family.
The resounding success of the combined World Championship has led the
FIBT to carry the experiment forward to the World Cup season. Six of the
seven World Cup stops this season will feature all disciplines during a fourday competition.
Television exposure will continue to be expansive, led by over 40 hours of
live coverage on Eurosport along with extensive reporting on German
Television, CBC in Canada, as well as SPEED Channel in the USA.
Russian networks will expand their coverage of FIBT events for the second season.
Last year FIBT events generated a total audience of over 600 million with
125 broadcast hours. A total of 155 channels showed bobsleigh and skeleton over 1544 separate broadcasts. The numbers have continued to grow
since the FIBT assumed production control of the World Cup and World
Championship events.
We extend good luck to all those competing this season and thank the
countless volunteers and officials for their assistance in allowing such an
extensive program of competitions.

des FIBT-Präsidenten...
Wir freuen uns, die zehnte Ausgabe des Media Guide des Internationalen
Bob- und Skeleton-Verbandes präsentieren zu können. Zum ersten Mal
wird der Guide auch auf einer CD-Rom zu haben sein, so dass der
gesamte Inhalt auch auf den Internetseiten der FIBT abzurufen ist
(www.bobsleigh.com, www.fibt.com, www.skeleton.info).
Die FIBT hatte 2003/2004 eine erfolgreiche Sport-Saison, aber neben
Triumph gab es auch eine Tragödie. Die ersten gemeinsamen FIBTWeltmeisterschaften für alle Disziplinen in Königssee waren ein großer
Schritt nach vorn in unserem Sport mit vielen Zuschauern vor Ort und
Millionen an den Fernsehgeräten in der ganzen Welt. Auf der anderen
Seite stand der Tod der italienischen Bob-Legende Eugenio Monti und der
schockierende tödliche Unfall der deutschen Bobfahrerin Yvonne Cernota.
Eugenio Monti hat unseren Sport seit Generationen geprägt. Er war das
Urbild des modernen olympischen Sportlers. Yvonnes tragischer Tod erinnert uns alle an die großen Herausforderungen und Risiken im Sport für
die, die ihn ausüben. Sie sind besondere Mitglieder jeder Gesellschaft. Die
FIBT-Familie wird beide vermissen und ihrer immer gedenken.
Der nachhaltige Erfolg der gemeinsamen Weltmeisterschaft hat dazu
geführt, dass die FIBT dieses Experiment nun auch im Weltcup ausprobieren wird. Sechs der sieben Weltcup-Rennen warden in dieser Saison
gemeinsam an vier Tagen abgehalten.
Die TV-Berichterstattung wird weiterhin ausgedehnt, vor allem durch über
40 Stunden Live-Übertragungen auf Eurosport sowie ausgedehnte
Berichterstattung im deutschen Fernsehen, CBC in Kanada und auf
SPEED Channel in den USA. Das russische Fernsehen wird nun in der
zweiten Saison über die FIBT-Wettbewerbe berichten.
Im vergangenen Jahr hatten die FIBT-Rennen eine GesamtZuschauerzahl von über 600 Millionen bei 125 Stunden Übertragung. 155
Kanäle zeigten Bob und Skeleton in über 1.544 Sendungen. Seitdem die
FIBT die TV-Produktion für den Weltcup und die Weltmeisterschaften
selbst übernommen hat, sind die Zahlen ständig gestiegen.
Wir wünschen allen Athleten viel Glück in dieser Saison und danken den
zahllosen ehrenamtlichen Helfern und Offiziellen, die ein solch ausgedehntes Programm erst möglich machen.
