Hamster Mania At SJSE
Beginning April 22nd, 2013,
our school embarked on a
special project, a schoolwide book club called One
School, One Book. Every
family from kindergarten
through sixth grade received a copy of the same
book, Betty G. Birney’s
The World According to Humphrey.
Teachers, staff and Principal Joe
Sampson are also reading the book, one
chapter each day for 15 days.
Ms. Livingston, teacher librarian, told
the students about the family reading
time during a special assembly at which
the library’s new pet hamster, Humphrey, was introduced.
Students also took home a letter to their
families explaining the program and
outlining the reading schedule, a chapter a night for four nights a week. The
final chapter read was chapter 15,
Happy Hamsterday!
To encourage students to read a chapter
a night, students answer trivia questions announced
on the
Hornets
News
show and
posted on
the Humphrey bulletin
board outside the media center.
When 2nd graders were asked about
reading our Humphrey book, Michaela
said, “Humphrey is a good character.”
Javon agreed and added, “He is the
best hamster in the whole entire
world.” Shamore said, “I like A.J. the
best.” Kelby pointed out an interesting
fact about Humphrey, “He knows self
defense in case someone attacks him.”
Since the purpose of the program is to
encourage family reading, students
talked about reading with their families. Yuen said, “My mom or my dad
read the book with me.” Janiah added,
“Reading with my father is fun.” DonJanay said she reads the book with
her sister, Erica, “and she likes it too.”
Kindergarten students also had a lot
to say about our Humphrey book. By
reading the book and watching our pet
Humphrey, kindergarten has learned
that hamsters are nocturnal and have
a “potty corner,” which everyone
thinks is a little funny.
Tiana said the best part of the book
was when, “Humphrey was dressed as
a ghost.” Tyler liked that part to because, “Humphrey won a blue ribbon
for best costume.”
Ms. Livingston has enjoyed the reading too. She said, “I’m so glad so many
of our students and their families have
taken on this reading challenge. I hope
to do it again next year and recruit
more students to read with their families. It is a great thing.”

From Mr. Sampson
Greeting SJSE family!
We have had so many great
things happening this past month.
I first want to recognize our outstanding students and teachers
for their hard work and focus during PASS testing. For the first
time in my professional career,
we had ZERO students miss testing during the first week! All students were present and extremely
focused during the test, and I look
forward to seeing what the data
shows when scores are released.
as the 6th grade camping trip and
promotion ceremony. I applaud
the efforts of all teachers, students, and parents during the
course of this past year, and I
know we are well on the way to
achieving our ultimate goal: To be
a model school for parental involvement and academic achievement!
Watch out for SJSE making
moves this summer and into next
year! Big things are happening!
Joe Sampson, III
I also would like to recognize one
of our students for earning the
Certificate of Merit from the South
Carolina Academy of Science!
Tatyana Nesmith was recognized
in the statewide contest on May 1.
Congratulations, Tatyana! We are
so proud of you.
Principal
With the close of the school year
coming, I look forward to our annual May Day celebration, as well

Fifth Graders are Earth Stewards
Chinyere McLean, Tatyana
Nesmith, Mercedes George,
and Sye Tate
Fifth graders have gone on several
field trips to Sewee Visitor Center
as part of the Earth Stewards Program.
Sye wrote, “the last time we went
there, we had a forest scavenger
hunt. Eric, Sherrod, Sam and I had
to answer 16 questions and we
answered 15. We had to find
fungi and other hidden things.
We each won a bag with a turtle
on it. I still miss that place. I
would like to be a marine biologist when I grow up.”
Students’ favorite memories
were of the career day trip, their
last trip to Sewee.
Mercedes wrote, “I like both careers (marine biologist and forester) but I like forester the most
because they are like doctors for
trees.
:Tatyana wrote, “We learned
about careers like park rangers,
wildlife inspectors. If I had to
pick a favorite, I would pick the
wildlife inspector. I like that job
because they work at airports
and they get to check people’s
bags to make sure they don’t
have anything illegal. They let us
see things they found in people’s
bags like an elephant tusk.”
Chinyere wrote, “My favorite career was the S.C. Department of
Natural Resources. I liked it because when I’m older I could work
as a biologist. We learned
about the tools they used, subjects we have to study to get
the job and the jobs they have.”
All of the students writing about
their experience said they had
a great day at Sewee.

Students Have a Blast at Riverdogs Game
Patrice Simmons, DonJanay Jenkins, Kenny Bell with Ms. Jensen’s
class
Primary students (CD-first grade) and second graders visited Riverdogs stadium April
24th when the baseball team played West
Virginia. The
Charleston team
won a close match,
6-5, and we had a
great time watching
the game. Kenny
said, “I’m happy the
Riverdogs won the
game!”
Second graders
reported that every
body was screaming
and it was really
loud. Patrice Simmons said, “I loved
the food! Charlie, the dog mascot was exciting to watch.” People were also dancing in
the stands. DonJanay said, “My favorite part
was dancing with my best friends to the music!”
