We start to enjoy warm weather and blooming flowers… we can also There are many changes around us that tell us GET INVOLVED! You too can help: - Look for upcoming clean-up events and you too can be part of a team to help clean our beautiful countryside. The countryside is there for everyone to enjoy ! Treat it with CARE & RESPECT and it will be around forever ! Once we lose our countryside, we lose it forever ! notice animals coming out of their long, winter sleep and their babies exploring the world for the first time. The countryside is at its best during this time of the year. Experience our countryside and enjoy nature’s wonderful gift to the senses of things to see, do, touch, smell and taste! Enjoying the countryside means also respecting the environment! Respecting the countryside... • Enjoying yourself does not mean that you have the right to cross any fields; A closed gate should remain like that and while some fields may seem empty, more often than not some of them would already have been sowed. • Leave the place as you have found it. Do not leave any littering around – find a bin for your rubbish, or take it home. Moreover, the litter left behind can also be a danger to children or other people’s pets. • Flowers are there to be enjoyed by everyone. Do not pick wild flowers – wild flowers provide seeds for birds and pollen for butterflies and bees. Where they grow is where they belong! • Only light a small fire where it is permissible, away from trees and under adult supervision. If a fire is out of control, everything and everyone is at risk. • Do not collect insects or frogs, or catch butterflies. Insects play many important roles in nature. The most important of which is the pollination (sprinkle with pollen) of flowering plants. Moreover, certain insects also provide important products such as honey, silk and wax, all of which can be of direct benefit to humans. 4 Facts & figures Clean-up the world campaign Last year 116 countries across the world took part in the clean-up the world campaign involving 27 million volunteers who made our planet that little bit cleaner! 5 Spring, the season of new beginnings... Many things happen in spring. Flowers bloom, families enjoy the countryside having picnics and the days start getting longer and warmer. The nature will be at its best! The mother and father bird know that the days are beginning to get warmer and longer and that there will be plenty of food for their young. As the days get longer the parent birds have more time to hunt for food for their growing chicks. Out of Hibernation With the warmer days of spring, animals, which have been in hibernation over the long winter, begin to wake up. Hedgehogs are animals which hibernate in nesting sites made of grass and leaves. In April, the males are thought to wake up first. Hedgehogs can be difficult to see as they are almost entirely nocturnal, which means they come out at night. 7 ! e v i F e m m i G 8 HAYLEY CAMILLERI Age: 11 KATRINA GENOVESE Age: 7 Food: Burger & Pasta Colour: Red & Orange Game/Gadget: PSP, Wii, Ps3, Xbox Wild Animals: Lions, Tigers & Cheetahs Singer: Selena Gomez Food: Burgers Colour: Purple & Pink Game/Gadget: Pig Goes Pop & Nintendo Animals: Snow Leopards Singers: Justin Bieber & Selina Gomez DANJEL GRIMA Age: 10 KYLE BORG Age: 6 Food: Mcdonald'sTM Big Mac & Nuggets Colour: Red & Blue Game/Gadget: PSP & Xbox Fifa 13 Animals: Cheetahs Sportsman: Messi Food: Nuggets, Pizza Margerita & Burgers Colour: Blue, Orange & Red Game/Gadget: Nintendo, Computer Games Animals: Tigers, Cheetahs & Snakes Singers: Kurt Calleja, Lmfao & Psy OWEN ABELA Age: 10 LUIGI GENOVESE Age: 3 Food: Pizza Colour: Green Game/Gadget: Galaxy Life Animal: Cats & Dogs Singer/Sportsman: Kurt Calleja/Del Piero Food: Chicken Nuggets & Chips Colour: Green & Blue Game/Gadget: Firemen Game Animal: T-Rex Dinosaur Favourite Songs: Nick-Junior Songs CHRISTABEL ABELA Age: 13 MARTINA MIKASINOVIC Age: 6 Food: Pasta & Pizza Colour: Pink, Green & Purple Game/Gadget: Crafts & Computer Games Animals: Tigers & Lions Singer: Rihana Food: Pasta & Chicken Nuggets Colour: Pink Game/Gadget: Dora Dress-Up Animals: Lions Singer: Selena Gomez Share your favourite things with us and win a Happy Meal voucher GARY KEN MICALLEF Age: 7 TM Food: Pizza Margerita Colour: Green Game/Gadget: PSP Wild Animals: Cheetahs Singer: Leo From Forsaken ANNABELLE MALLIA Age: 10 ORIANA MARIAH BIGENI Age: 7 Food: Noodles Colour: Purple Game/Gadget: Nintendo DSi Animals: Tigers Singer: Selena Gomez Food: Meat, Salad & Pasta Colour: Red Game/Gadget: Nintendo & Crafts Wild Animals: Tigers & Lions Singer: Glen Vella SVEN MALLIA Age: 7 Food: Sausages Colour: Red Game/Gadget: PSP - Bakugan Animals: Tiger Sportsman: Rooney RUSSELL BELLIZZI Age: 7 JASMIN JO BRIFFA Age: 7 Food: Mcdonald’sTM Food, Pizza & Pasta Colour: Blue, Red, Green, Gold & Silver Game/Gadget: PSP, Nintendo Wild Animals: Cheetahs Sportsman: Fernando Torres Food: Mcdonald’sTM Chicken Salad & Pasta Colour: Purple Game/Gadget: Xbox & Nintendo Dsi Wild Animals: Siberian Tigers Singer: Justin Bieber CHANELLE MARIE CAMILLERI Age: 6 SAMIRA FENECH Age: 11 RYAN LUKE BELLIZZI Age: 12 Food: Mcdonald’sTM Food & Pizza Colour: Pink & Purple Game/Gadget: Nintendo Wii Wild Animal: Leopards Singers: One Direction Food: Pizza & Big MacTM Colour: Blue, Red, Lime, Black & White Game/Gadget: Ps Vita, PSP, Nintendo Wild Animals: Cheetahs & Eagles Singer/Sportsman: Justin Bieber/Cristiano Ronaldo Food: Pasta Colour: Pink Game/Gadget: Nintendo 3DS Animals: Tigers, Cats & Dogs Singers: Kurt Calleja To participate in Gimme five use the form on page 13 9 WORD SEARCH es! m a G g n i l z z u P ’s nald o D c M d l a n o R y o Enj 10 SPOT THE DIFFERENCE 11 Super Star reader bookmark Win a party for you and 20 of your friends by answering the question below: When is Earth Day celebrated? • 22 March • 1 April • 22 April If you love to make things, I invite you to try your hand and make this handy bookmark to remind you of all the books and the many adventures that you have experienced through books Last issue’s winner of a Fantastic Party at McDonald’s is Kylie Shepherd, Paola Send us your answer by e-mail to [email protected] or by post to the address on the back. On 22 April we will be celebrating Earth Day. It is a day to remember our amazing planet Earth and the plants and animals that live here with us. 175 countries celebrate Earth Day Earth Day began to be celebrated on 22 April 1970 and has been an important day ever since. It's a day to reflect on our planet and our environment and what we can do to help keep them healthy. From the beginning, children and schools were approached to support and continue this special day. And this makes sense! You, like many other children, have the best interest in keeping the planet healthy. STOP & THINK... What if we threw our garbage in the countryside and in the sea...? What if we turned on our water and let it run all day long...? What if we left our lights on all day and night...? What do you think would happen to our environment...? Let’s make EVERY day Earth Day! Take the Earth day quiz and see how much you know about caring for Mother Earth 1. Glass decomposes in landfills after how many years? 3. What are the three R’s of the environment -5 - 20 000 - 1 million - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - Read, Reuse, Recycle - Ready, Read, Recycle 2. In your house, where is the most water used? 4. How many containers are found in Bring-in sites? -Kitchen - The laundry room -Bathroom What’s your score? -3 -4 -7 Check your answers below and if you got at least 3 correct answers you are doing your part on saving our planet. Work harder and teach others so that they too can make a difference! What can you do? Just a few small things can make a difference Use recycled items in your crafts and in your everyday life as much as possible Learn what items can be recycled and where is the area in your village or town where you can take them Do the same thing at school, clubs and anywhere else you spend time Turn out the lights when you leave a room 14 Answers: 1. Million: It takes a million years for glass to decompose in a landfill. You can help by recycling your glass bottles and jars at home and at school. 2. Bathroom: On average we use the most water in the bathroom. Cut down on some of the water wasted by turning off the tap while you brush your teeth 3. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: It's time to learn the three R's of the environment. Then practice what you preach: don't buy things you don't need or items that come in wasteful packaging or that cannot be recycled. Reuse and recycle whatever you can. 4. 4: Blue for plastic, white for paper, brown for glass and black for metal. Encourage your parents to recycle and help them sort the waste into the right bins 15 Premier Restaurants Malta Ltd, Nineteen Twenty Three, Valletta Road, Marsa, MRS 3000
