Introduction to Website Building
To tell you the truth, website building and publishing is not an easy task as seasoned
webmasters would readily confirm to you. Despite the fact that there are many content
management systems available which makes the job of building a web page relatively easy,
you still need to carry out a lot of activities in order to build a top notch website - attractive to
both the search engines and human visitors. Consequently, the importance of a step-by-step
guide of this nature cannot be overemphasised.
The World Wide Web (www) – Meaning and Origin
The acronym ―www‖ means the World Wide Web. According to Wikipedia.com, ―the World
Wide Web (abbreviated as WWW or W3, commonly known as the Web), is a system of
interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. With a web browser, one can view
web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia, and navigate between
them via hyperlinks‖.
Similarly, businessdictionary.com defines the World Wide Web as a ―collection of internet
resources (such as FTP, telnet, Usenet), hyperlinked text, audio, and video files, through
which remote sites can be accessed and searched by browsers based on standards such as
HTTP and TCP/IP. Also called the web, it was created in 1989 by the UK physicist Tim
Berners-Lee while working at the European Particle Physics Laboratory (called CERN after
its French initials Conseil Europeen de Reserches Nucleaires) in Switzerland, as an easier
way to access information scattered across the internet‖.
Explaining further, Wikipedia.com states, ―using concepts from his earlier hypertext systems
like ENQUIRE, British engineer, computer scientist and at that time employee of CERN, Sir
Tim Berners-Lee, now Director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), wrote a
proposal in March 1989 for what would eventually become the World Wide Web.
At CERN, a European research organisation near Geneva situated on Swiss and French soil,
Berners-Lee and Belgian computer scientist Robert Cailliau proposed in 1990 to use
hypertext "to link and access information of various kinds as a web of nodes in which the
user can browse at will", and they publicly introduced the project in December of the same
year.‖
Website and Web Pages Defined
A website, also written as Web site, web site, or simply site, is a collection of related web
pages that can be accessed globally on the worldwide web. A website may contain various
content, including text, video, music, audio, images, etc.
Hosted on at least one web server, a website is accessible via a network such as the Internet
or a private local area network through an Internet address known as a Uniform Resource
Locator. All publicly accessible websites collectively constitute the World Wide Web. A
website can consist of one page, or of tens of thousands of pages, depending on what the site
owner is trying to accomplish.

On the other hand, a web page is a document, typically written in plain text interspersed with
formatting instructions of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML, XHTML). A web page can
contain any type of information, and can include text, graphics, animation and sound.
Additionally, a web page may incorporate elements from other websites with suitable markup
anchors.
Web pages are accessed and transported with the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which
may optionally employ encryption (HTTP Secure, HTTPS) to provide security and privacy
for the user of the web page content. The user's application, often a web browser, renders the
page content according to its HTML markup instructions onto a display terminal.
When you type a web address in the address bar of your web browser and hit the enter button
on your keyboard, your browser will search the internet and look for the address on the
worldwide web. When the corresponding website is found, the home page is opened and
displayed on your web browser. From the home page, which should introduce you to what
that website offers in terms of information or other services, you can click on links to reach
other sections of the site.
Types of Website
Before you go ahead and set up your website, it is very important for you to have a complete
understanding of the different types of websites available on the internet – so as to have a
firm foothold on the business of website building right from the start.
It is not all websites that are completely free to use. While some websites require a
subscription to access some or all of their content, whereas other websites are completely free
to use, others do not.
Example of the type of websites that require a subscription include many business sites, parts
of news websites, academic journal websites, gaming websites, file-sharing websites,
message boards, web-based email, social networking websites, websites providing real-time
stock market data, and websites providing various other services (e.g., websites offering
storing and/or sharing of images, files and so forth).
The different types of websites are as follows: static websites, dynamic websites, social
networking websites, forum websites, ecommerce websites, flash websites, content managed
websites, blogs, etc.
Static Websites
A static website is the simplest form of website wherein the site’s content is delivered
without the use of server side processing. Static websites are used principally for brochure
sites and can include complex graphics, animations and JavaScript driven features.
The main limitation of static websites is that they cannot provide complex user interactivity;
because they cannot either gather information from the user or serve content which is
dependent on user actions. Large static sites are also time consuming to develop and more

difficult to update because changes need to be implemented individually on each page of the
site.
However, if a business does not require a large website or advanced interactivity, a static site
which is developed using XHTML and CSS will provide clean, compact coding and good
search engine performance.
Dynamic Websites
Dynamic websites rely on server side scripting to provide advanced interactivity and usually
use a database to deliver the content for individual pages. A dynamic approach is appropriate
for developing large websites with content which is formulaic, for example, catalogues,
photograph albums and complex series of data. A dynamic website will be required to allow
users to sort and search records, or to restrict access to parts of the website using a log-in
procedure.
Generating website pages on the fly, using a database to store and deliver content, is an
efficient way of managing a large site, with maintenance and updating generally much easier
than for a comparable static site. The disadvantage of dynamic websites is that Search Engine
Optimisation (SEO) techniques are more difficult to implement, particularly if the site’s SEO
needs are not taken into account at the development stage.
Social Networking Websites
A social networking website is a site where individuals can set up an online profile,
describing their interests, and add links to other profiles. Generally, users are able to post
personal information, including photographs, videos, and blog entries.
Social networking sites can be a great way to stay in touch with a large group of people. If
you have news you would like to share with everyone you know, you can simply post it on
your own personal bulletin board, and it will be distributed to everyone on your friends list.
Social networking sites can also be helpful for connecting with new people, whether on a
business, friendship, or a romantic level.

and finally to archiving.
A content managed website is a further refinement of the database driven dynamic site. The
content management system provides a password protected interface through which users can
add, edit and remove content from the site. A content management system is particularly

working from remote locations.
It also provides the ability to manage the structure of the site, the appearance of the published
pages, and the navigation provided to the users.

Blogs
The word blog is a portmanteau of the words web log. But that alone doesn’t really define

web log, but the most common term is indeed blog. The term blog can also be used as a verb
