IOWA LAKES ALUMNI
Where are they now?
Bob Holt - Class of 1983
In this age of technology, sending e-cards has
become a standard way to say “happy
birthday,” “happy holidays,” or to just
brighten up someone’s day. Some of the most
popular e-cards circulating the Web feature the
hilarious Hallmark duo hoops&yoyo. A green
bunny - yoyo, and pink cat - hoops, came about
when Iowa Lakes graduate Bob Holt was bored
with an assignment.
“I was behind on an assignment, and it was a
boring one, so I started playing around with
yoyo, a character I had made at home. I didn’t
want to give Hallmark credit for him, so I
changed his ears and made him pink,” said Holt.
The idea took off, and Holt put the comic duo together. Fellow creative mind Mike Adair joined Holt to do
the voices of hoops&yoyo, recording most of the conversations ad lib.
Check out hoops&yoyo at: www.hoopsandyoyo.com!
Holt, a Mason City, Iowa, native, graduated from Iowa Lakes in 1983
with a degree in commercial art. He currently resides in Kansas City,
MO with his wife Debbie and two daughters Marissa and Lily.

GRADUATES HOLD PROGRAM REUNION ON EMMETSBURG CAMPUS
The Early Childhood Education/Child Care program held their first reunion on
May 16. Joanna Asmus, Class of 2007, organized the event in honor of
professor Marsha Swanson who retired in December 2008.
Grads from 1991-2008 attended the gathering which was held on the
Emmetsburg Campus. Attendees enjoyed a tour of the new Emmetsburg
Campus facilities, which includes a Biology wet lab. A short program was
hosted at 11:00 where participants shared memories and got reacquainted.

Proceeds from the event will be added to the Early Childhood Education/Child
Care endowed program scholarship fund. If you are interested in
contributing to this or other scholarship funds, tax deductible donations are
accepted by mailing a check to the Iowa Lakes Community College
Foundation, 19 South 7th Street, Estherville, IA 51334.

mail, which doesn’t allow forwarding…or for the college to get back a change of address. Please forward
this newsletter electronically to any interested individuals; so Iowa Lakes can reconnect with as many
alumni as possible!
TWO BUILDING PROJECTS UNDERWAY AT IOWA LAKES
Ground was broken in April for a $550,000 addition to the Sustainable Energy Education Center/Wind
Energy and Turbine Technology building on the Estherville campus of Iowa Lakes Community College.
College President Valerie Newhouse said the new addition will serve as a model for consumers and
industry plus allow Iowa Lakes to accept 32 additional freshmen students into the ever-popular program
for a total of 102 new students this fall.
The ground breaking ceremony took on additional significance with the presence of Ron Litzinger,
Chief Executive Officer of Edison Mission Group. Litzinger formally announced Edison Mission’s
$100,000 contribution to the facility. The building project includes four labs/classrooms. It is hoped
that construction will be completed by Sept. 1.
A second building project being planned is for a new Construction Technology building at the
Emmetsburg campus. Construction Technology staff and students would complete the expansion
project, providing both additional educational opportunities and cost-savings to the college. The plan is
that this facility would expand ‘green’ building curriculum to the current course work.

2009-2010 Core Book
The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch
A computer science professor at
Carnegie Mellon, Randy was asked to
give a final lecture after he had been
diagnosed with terminal
pancreatic cancer. The Lecture Randy
gave wasn’t about dying, but it was
about the importance of overcoming
obstacles, of enabling the dreams of
others, and seizing every moment
because “time is all you have…and
you may find one day that you have
less than you think”.
Each year, Iowa Lakes chooses a core
book that is used for cross-curriculum
education.
