In 1996, the Duenkels’ dropped weddings to concentrate solely on portraits. Fuzzy’s business evolved into mostly a specialty studio with under 100 total sessions per year. While they photograph babies, children, families, couples and glamour, high school seniors are his favorite. Seniors are his easiest subjects since they require little space (unlike families), hold still (unlike kids), do what they’re told (unlike babies), understand English (unlike pets), and will give him as much time as he needs (unlike weddings). Fuzzy practically insists on working on location with each session. Fuzzy feels his specialty is his total comfort with creating portraits in clients’ homes, especially if he has never been there before. His goal is to make a variety of images that don’t necessarily look like they were done in the clients’ bedrooms, garages, or hallways… even though they were! GO HOME! For Custom Senior Portraits • • • • • Fuzzy will show you how to create custom senior portraits that transcend the ordinary. You won’t learn how to do more… you’ll learn how to do better! For four to six hours, Fuzzy goes to each senior’s home and anywhere else to just have fun! The result is a powerful collection of images that reflect that senior’s lifestyle, interests and attitude. Fuzzy doesn’t try to make images that sell... and that is precisely why they sell! Fuzzy is a master at outdoor and indoor lighting techniques similar tothose used in the fashion/ commercial industry, but scaled down for the photographer who chooses to work without an assistant. Fuzzy’s choices of equipment (to buy or build) are also keys to help rather than hinder creativity. Fuzzy purposely photograph about thirty seniors per year in a small, middle income Wisconsin town. However, their average senior sale is very high as a result of the originality of the photography and a pricing system that makes dollars & sense! As we all know, an image is worthless unless the client buys it. To that end, Fuzzy’s soft-sell sales techniques pay for his addiction (photography). If senior portraits are already part of your business, this seminar is guaranteed to give you a fresh perspective. If you don’t do seniors, you may want to start... after you see how much fun it can be! Short Bio/Promo Professional photographers must have a firm grasp on creative, versatile and precise portrait lighting as the one constant in the ever-changing field of photography and the never-ending avalanche of competition. Fuzzy’s program focuses on vitally important basics and advanced nuances of many indoor, outdoor, ambient and artificial lighting techniques. -8- PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS of Iowa Spring Event Speakers 2015 Matthew Kemmetmueller Matthew Kemmetmueller, AKA “The Body” is the Lead Photographer/Owner of Kemmetmueller Photography based just outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 2010 Matthew took full ownership of the studio from his father and Matthew began to focus on diversifying the income for the studio and growing it into new directions. After developing a successful photo booth rental service (www.thelittleblackbooth.com) and an extremely successful sister company that photographs boudoir (www.elusiveart.com), Matthew has his complete focus on making his studio a fast output, high-quality place that proves that high volume studios do not mean low quality. I am a photoholic! Some say I am obsessed with photography. I beg to differ. There is a fine line between obsessed and dedicated. I am incredibly dedicated to photography and honing my craft to stay ahead of the ever changing trends and technology. I have always believed in “plowing the road not just paving it” I love photographing people. I really don’t get hung up on a specialty. I live in a town of under 15,000 people so I need to be diverse and able to photograph anything. I love the interaction with others and creating a connection with the camera! I am a Canadian boy who grew up on a farm. I have played college football and pretty much every other sport known to man. And yes…of course hockey!!! Nine years ago I lost my eyesight due to the environment I worked in. While working on regaining my vision I picked up a point and shoot camera. The rest is history. My vision came back in more ways the just with my sight. I now live in the small town of North Battleford Saskatchewan. (pop 15000) Smack in the middle of the prairies. Within the last three years I have moved to a new city with new clients and face the challenges as any of the other beginner photographers out there. It has been an interesting ride but a very rewarding one. The love of love of my life Paula Moon and I started our business Warne Photography and have never looked back! We have been able to travel and share with others our techniques for creating our “brand” of images! We have won many awards along the way, created many nationally acclaimed comp prints and been recognized by our peers. In addition to travelling we have created a rock solid core of business within our local community. Ultimately this is what will maintain our place in the photographic business for years to come! We are really excited to be able to speak at the Professional Photographers of Iowa spring convention. We look forward to sharing with everyone our concepts and techniques! We live by the motto…”If you can dream it you can do it!” Warne’s way imagery! From composition to lighting to processing this is about using your set of skills as a photographer to create amazing images. He will be demonstrating one light, two light and multiple light setups. All the technical stuff aside ultimately we need to establish a rapport with our client. Warne will show you how he uses mirroring to put his clients mind at ease. This is one of the biggest hurdles so many photographers face! - 12 - PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS of Iowa Spring Event Speakers 2015 Pat & Joy Cahill Pat Cahill, Cr. Photog., is the CEO of Cahill Studios of Photography in Amery, Wisconsin. Joy Cahill, Pat’s daughter, is the General Manager and new Owner of Cahill Studios which opened in 1978 . Cahill Studios photographs and processes more than 15,000 underclass students as well as 15,000 sports clients annually. Also as the National Sales Manager of American Color Imaging, Pat deals with teaching independent studios the fundamentals of digital control along with file and data management in an underclass and sports setting. As a sought after platform speaker, Pat has lectured throughout the United States in the benefits of a volume business model as a way to even out cash flow and relieve some of the financial stress of a “seasonal” photography studio. A past board member of the Wisconsin Professional Photographers Association, Pat is an Honorary Fellow in the State of Wisconsin as well as a member of ASP, PSPA and SPAC. Pat and his wife, Merry, have five children and Pat is a former Investigator for the Polk County, Wisconsin, Sheriff’s Department. Studio Can Profit With Underclass and Sports. Years ago there were traditional studios and there were volume underclass and sports studios - nothing in-between. Even today many believe that is still true. Pat and Joy Cahill will show how change, challenge and achievement are the norms in their business. When a strong desire to increase studio profits is coupled with an underclass and sports, volume business model you can create a lucrative business. In the program, Pat and Joy will show you how a “traditional studio” can: • Break into the underclass and sports volume market. • Increase market share with personalized products. • Control workflow for data based production. • Get correct data from a school or league. • Design personalized products for an automated workflow. • Increase profitability by offering additional products and services. • Keep the volume and profits coming back. The three points you need know: • Underclass is no longer a “specialty”. Any studio can benefit and profit from underclass photography, even if your area seems to be “locked in” with contracts. Learn how your studio can own those contracts. • You no longer need special equipment to make a profit. Your digital camera and a handful of media cards is all you need to get started. • There’s gold in them thar’ schools. With an average student base of 20-25 students per classroom, even a small classroom is a guaranteed sell. Underclass school pictures are an established practice that no parent goes without. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to not only profit, but market to, these students and families. - 13 - PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS of Iowa Spring Event Speakers 2015 JEFF NORDBY Jeff Nordby has lived in Anchorage Alaska for the last 37 years. His interest in photography began with a simple SLR and the beautiful Alaska scenery and wildlife. His introduction to portrait photography came a few years later, after his second daughter was born. After his daughters were born, he decided he would begin creating his own portraits of his kids in a spare room of his home. A strong fascination with studio lighting grew quickly. Soon Nordby was being hired to photograph other children, families and weddings. Over the next few years, he began to concentrate his work on individuals and later, specifically the high school senior market. After years of working from two home studio spaces, Nordby Photography moved into a 3,700 square foot commercial space. While seniors still make up the majority of his work today, he also photographs other individuals and has recently begun to offer a limited number of family portraits as well as destination shoots in Hawaii. Jennifer Konopa helps run Nordby Photography and has been very instrumental in many of the contemporary concepts of the business. Nordby has been a member of several organizations including PPA, WPPI, Senior Portrait Artists (SPA) as well as teaching at SPA and LightPro. He was also the president of a local group of photographers in Anchorage. This program will mostly be about our lighting techniques and how we developed them. We will also be talking about some of the unique events we have developed at our studio such as our themed “Shootouts” and our destination shoots in Hawaii for the seniors. - 14 - PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS of Iowa Spring Event Speakers 2015 Scott Robert Lim Scott Robert Lim is an international award winning, master photographer and certified educator with over 70 international major awards to his name including; 2009 Kodak Award and named one of 50 most influential wedding industry leaders- CosmoBride and 2014 Top 10 Most Influential in the Industry by Shutter Magazine. We are going to look at what it really takes to successfully photograph children. Many of you may think it takes a great camera, great lighting, expensive backgrounds…but, let’s strip all of that away. Imagine you are in a room with no one and nothing but a child, and mom standing nearby. What are you going to do? How are you going to get that child to interact with you, trust you, smile at you, and cooperate with you? I. Characteristics of Children…What do children like to do? (play, be in control, investigate things…let the crowd come up with answers). II. #1 Philosophy with Photographing Children - You must go into their world…do not expect them to come up to your adult world. So…how do we go into the world of a newborn? What do newborns like to do? - Approach the session like a child. You must get into their mind …think like they do..act like they do…Remember our characteristics of children! - Knowing what children like to do at each age and stage of life is the beginning to your success III.Have a Plan - Do not enter the camera room with no inkling of what you are going to do during the session - Know what you will do with each session. Have appropriate props and activities tailored to the child’s age and mother’s desires for the final images. - babies, two-year olds, each studio background, location sessions etc. etc. Know what is going to occur before you begin. IV.Give Them Something To Do - Children’s hands need to be doing something. - Have several session activities and combine these with at least 3-4 camera distractions. - Busy hands will enhance the believability of the portrait. V. A Word About Two-Year Olds… - At this stage of life, referred to the “terrible twos,” a child is trying to establish independence…Erik Erickson’s Psychosocial Stages of Development. They must learn to do things by themselves…it is vital to their development. We can’t fight against it but can work WITH It. - Never ask a two-year old to DO anything…the answer to every question is always “NO!” Instead use reverse psychology…”Don’t you go over there and sit in that chair…don’t you do it!!” Also, use distractions they cannot resist…candy treats etc. - Keep mother from interfering. The worst thing that mom can do, is continue to ask the child to do things for you. VI.Consultation - This is the thread which weaves the entire session together. - In this day and age, a phone consult is usually adequate if the client has seen your work - It is vital in gaining control before your little client ever walks through the door. - It lets you create your plan for each session so you will know exactly what to do. VII. Unending Patience - Sounds like a cliché…right? Don’t ever let mom see you lose patience - Remember, she has spent the day/and time before the session preparing for this session… - 18 - PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS of Iowa Spring Event Speakers 2015 Kay Eskridge Bio Combining her passion for photography and her love of people, Kay Eskridge’s studio, Images by Kay & Co. has earned a sterling reputation for high-quality lifestyle portraiture. Doug Gordon’s vision has helped to shape the memories of thousands of brides and grooms. Doug grew-up in the New York City suburb of Long Island. Doug’s parents owned and operated a portrait and wedding photography studio business. At 11 years old, Doug began shadowing his father as his assistant at weddings, thus beginning Doug’s photographic apprenticeship and his fondness for the joy and inspiration shared by so many brides, grooms and their families. Five years later when Doug was 16 he shot his first wedding, a life-changing experience that set his career in motion and which after more than 2 decades, is still going strong. Doug Gordon’s business philosophy starts with first setting goals, then working hard and studying hard to transform those goals into reality. That personal work ethic eventually brought him to train with the legendary Wedding photographer Monte Zucker who inspired him to master his craft even more than he had previously. His hard work, experience and goal setting began to pay dividends a decade ago. Doug purchased the remaining shares of his parent’s business, enabling them to retire while also allowing him the opportunity to elevate his local family-business to new heights with few geographical boundaries. Currently, Doug’s very busy studio photographs an average of 1,000 weddings per year as well as another 5,000 portraits ranging from schools, to sports, newborns, boudoir, etc. To ensure consistency, Doug produces the necessary training materials and he trains and manages a team of twenty-nine talented photographers, cinematographers and professional staff. Doug remains a strong believer in paying it forward so he continues to actively share the lessons he’s learned as a photographer, as a businessman and as a caring human being with thousands of professional and aspiring photographers around the world. Doug and his own bride are happily married, shaping their own family memories for more than sixteen years. He and his wife have 2 lovable and inspiring children, 1 boy and 1 girl. I live in a town of under 15 000 people so I need to be diverse and able to photograph anything. I love the interaction with others and creating a connection with the camera! Warne Noyce I am a Canadian boy who grew up on a farm. We live by the motto…”If you can dream it you can do” Jeff Nordby has lived in Anchorage Alaska for the last 37 years. - 21 - Jeff Nordby PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS of Iowa Don Lohnes Speakers 2015 Husband to Heidi for 8 years, father to Beckett for 3 years, professional photographer and digital artist for thirteen years, studioU business co-owner for 7 years. They know about golf, they know the pro golfer’s style, they know what each club does and when it’s needed. Sometimes they may even be asked their opinion. I’ve always seen myself as Heidi’s Caddy. During our brief time together I’ll try to cover the things that I think make a great Photo Assistant (Caddy). It’s not just about schleping gear folks! Knowing your role Knowing what do to without being told Knowing when to shut up Custom Color balance: how/why Reflector for the Mom Mom distraction techniques Knowing the gear Jokes Where and when to be where and when Reflector for the Assistant The Lens Hand-Off Selling off the camera Troy Eiffert Originally from Winchester, KY, I moved to Iowa in the summer of 2001 from Long Beach Ca. After joining the Marine Corp in 1984, I was stationed in El Toro, CA. While in the Corp, I worked on jets that were configured to take photos. Working with this aircraft, I learned the basics of photography and transferred the info over to 35 mm. While in the Marine Corp and working on building a portfolio, I would attend photo shoots arranged by local photo clubs. Since there are so many people in the area that are looking for photos there was always a great group of individuals to photograph. During the next 6 years I continued to photograph in the parks of the Los Angeles area and worked with an agent in creating headshot for some of her clients. The headshot business was done while working full time for an aircraft manufacturer and came to an end when they were transferred to another city. I then dropped out of the photography business for a period of time while working in the IT industry for companies like MGM Grand, Mattel, Netgateway and Hostpro. Michael Cravens In July 2001, I moved to Ankeny to be with my better half Julie, and worked in real estate for the next five years. We started out with photography again after having our baby’s photo taken. Our baby is Erica, a blond schnoodle and at that time was a four month old puppy. After a very unpleasant experience with the photographer, Julie made the statement that she knew we could do better than this, and thus our pet photography business, My Furry Friends Photo, was more than a thought. We proceeded to work with another photographer that specializes in pet photography and purchased our mobile studio/sales center. We can travel to groomers/bakeries and other animal specialty location, where we provide photography to clients throughout the day or over a two-day period. I have to add that we love animals and love taking pet photos. In Dec 2006 we purchased our current hone that came with additional buildings which we have converted to our studio and Cambridge House Photography was now a reality. We have had success in the Ballard community photographing families, seniors, weddings and the likes. We do still have the pet business and have been able to merge the two rather well. We have provided photography services to John Deere, United Way, ISU and the Ames Convention Center and Visitors Bureau plus others in the local area. I joined PPI in 2005 and was instantly drawn to the print competition. After watching and learning the first year I threw the gauntlet and decided I would try my luck. This first year I set a goal to receive a score and have at least one of my images be displayed. To my surprise I had all four displayed. Since that time, I have added more points to my total and now lack just a few points in securing my Master Degree from PPA ( next year should do the trick), At Cambridge House Photography we look at animals as children with fur! For many, their dogs are the children they never had or those who have left home. We can understand and respect this as our dogs are our children. Let me show you a unique approach to the world of photographing animals. Digital Files: Monitor Settings, D65, 120 cd/m2, 2.20 gamma NOTES REGARDING THE MASTER ARTIST CATEGORY The Artist competition is judged using different criteria than the Photographic Open (PO). In PO, just the final image result is considered when applying a score. With Artist, the final result is a factor, but the execution of technique and degree of difficulty are also considered. Guide images are encouraged to help the judges understand the process used and techniques involved in creating the final image. Techniques may be electronic or traditional (actual paint for example) or a combination thereof. Read and follow rules before making your prints- these can be downloaded from the website. If you have questions call beforehand. Believe me the last thing we want to do is throw out a print. I don’t want to have to make that decision and you don’t want it to happen. Read them over entirely- some things may have changed since you last entered. 2. Fill out your forms and place your form and check on top of the prints so that they are the first thing pulled out when your case is opened. No paper clips which could scratch your prints in transit. 3. Include a CD of your images for the slide show at the banquet. 4. When packing your prints do not put them in plastic bags and whatever you do do not use tape of any kind to secure a bag or wrapping around the print. This makes it hard for the print crew slowing us down but worse the chances of actual damage to your prints is far greater. It would be easy for the tape to accidentally touch the surface of your print when we are unwrapping them. The best plan is to put a sheet of foam the same size of your print between each print and stack them with the fronts together. You can buy this at Office Max or similar stores- it is white and comes in a roll that you cut to fit. Another good option if the facing of 16x20 mount board which will not stick to the prints. 5. While it is not mandatory that you have an actual print case it is highly recommended. If you do not have one try and check with other photographers to see if they have one you can borrow. Sometimes if people have been doing print competition for a while they will have an old one they no longer use. You will be required to have a print case at HOA or national and you will reuse them year after year so it might be a good investment for you. If you simply cannot come up with a print case try to use a box close to the correct size so that your prints do not slide around a lot or that is not too tight of a fit making them difficult to get out. We will accept prints however they come packaged to us but we are not responsible for damage to your prints even though we will do our best to handle them just like we would like our own prints handled. You have spent a lot of time, energy and money on your prints and protecting them by packing them correctly could save you heartache caused by damage to your prints. By studying the works of early photographers it is obvious that changed rapidly. It appears those photographers were not be content with just recording the scene for posterity from eye level only or to let the nature of the background be whatever was there. The men and women practicing photography in those early days showed an interest in making the photographs more pleasing to view by arranging the elements of the photographs to improve them. Showing ingenuity and creativity improved the impact of those images. Proper composition and print presentation evoked a style recognizable in many of the earliest photographers. The choice of subjects, use of lighting, a defined center of interest, plane of focus and the balance of physical elements and tones in the scene often made the viewer see exactly what the photographer wanted to be noticed first – telling a story without a sound uttered or a word written. Since every photograph of this time was made by hand, the photographers of this era and for years to come had to be craftsmen who were constantly concerned with final quality of their photographs and developing new techniques to suit the needs of the photographs they were producing or the situations they were working in. Today those large film cameras have been replaced by much smaller digital cameras that can be carried everywhere the photographers go. Horse-drawn darkrooms exist only in museums and except for those purists with a love for the process and qualities of using film, the days of making every photograph delivered by hand are gone forever. The modern darkroom lives in the virtual realm inside a computer the size of a small suitcase. Visual artists produce their images with high-end inkjet printers sitting next to their computers or send their digital files over the internet to a retail processor for finishing. However, the earlier photographer’s desires to improve the photographs they made by attending to the details of their work still lives on in the modern image makers of today. Twelve elements have been defined as necessary for the success of an art piece or image: Impact, Creativity, Style, Composition, Print Presentation, Color Balance, Center of Interest, Lighting, Subject Matter, and Technical Excellence Technique and Story Telling. Any image, art piece or photograph will reveal some measure of each of these twelve elements, the visually superior examples will reveal obvious consideration of all the elements. Impact is the sense one gets upon viewing an image for the first time and generally is a culmination of all twelve elements’ effects in an image and might evoke laughter, sadness, anger, pride, wonder or any other of a wide range of emotions. Creativity is the external expression of imagination of the maker by using the medium to convey an idea, message or thought. Style is defined in a number of ways as it applies to a creative image. It might be defined by a specific genre or simply be recognizable as the characteristics of how a specific artist applies light to a subject. It can impact an image in a positive manner when the subject matter and the style are appropriate for each other or have a negative influence when it doesn’t. Style and creativity can work in harmony when used to define a new look or approach to the subject. - 34 - PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS of Iowa Composition is important to the design of an image bringing all of the visual elements together in concert to express the purpose of the image. Proper composition holds the viewer in the image and prompts us to look where the creator of the image intends. Effective composition can be pleasing or disturbing, depending on the intent of the image maker. Print Presentation affects an image by giving it that finished look. The mats and borders used should support and enhance the image and never distract from it. Center of Interest is the point or points on the image where the maker wants the viewer to stop at as they view the image. There can be primary and secondary centers of interest – occasionally, there will be no specific center of interest when the entire scene is collectively the center of interest. Lighting, or put another way, the use and control of light is how dimension shape and roundness is defined in an image. Whether the light applied to an image is man made or natural the proper use of it can enhance an image. Subject Matter should always be appropriate to the story being told in an image. Color Balance supplies harmony to an image. An image where the tones work together effectively supporting the image can enhance its emotional appeal. Balance of color is not always harmonious and can be used to evoke diverse feelings for effect. Technical Excellence is technical excellence of the image itself as it is presented for viewing. Sharpness, exposure, printing, mounting and correct color all speak to the qualities of the physical print. Technique is the approach used creating the image. Printing, lighting, posing, choice of film and paper and more are part of the technique applied to an image. The technique should match the needs of the image. Story Telling can be one of the strengths of an image. One beauty of art is that every viewer might not get the same message or read the same story into an image. Its success may be measured by the fact it evoked the imagination to wonder. The Photographic Exhibitions Committee (PEC) of PPA uses the 12 elements above as the “gold standard” to define a merit image. PEC trains judges to be mindful of these elements when judging images to the PPA merit level and to be placed in the International Print Exhibit at the annual convention. - 35 - PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS FINISHED PRODUCT COMPETITION of Iowa Rules – Rules – Rules – Rules There are NO rules !!!!!! Later, following a degree in Civil Engineering Technology, he found other forms of art in draftsmanship, computer programming, writing, graphic design, digital art and photography. Driven by an over-active imagination, Scott turns to creativity of many forms to express himself. Photography, while always in the background, became a big part of Scott’s life when his children were young. He spent countless hours crafting images of them playing to learn the basics of his camera. As he shared his joy and work with his friends, his hobby quickly took on a life of its own. As a stay at home Dad, his wife Kris encouraged him to realize his potential and take his creativity, hobby and dreams of owning a business to the next level. Kris gave Scott money she had secretly saved to create S. Kelly Photography together in the fall of 2004. Scott is a full time Portrait and Wedding photographer working out of his home studio, S. Kelly Photography in Dubuque, Iowa with his wife Kris. They have been in business for over ten years serving the tri-state area of Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois. Both Scott and Kris photograph in the studio and on location, working together to capture the images and style that has built their business. Outside of the creative role, Scott manages image work flow, technical requirements and business aspects of the studio while Kris is responsible for the sales, marketing and office management. A self-taught photographer with an insatiable appetite to learn, create and educate, Scott has attended countless seminars and educational opportunities including MAIPP and earned his BIZ Degree. He continues to further his skills and craftsmanship as a life-long learner. Scott has seen growth and unexpected benefits to his business through his membership with the PPA and PPI. He looks forward to serving the industry and specifically the members of PPI with his time on the board.
