Queensland Corvette Club Inc. June 2011 MERRY SKIDMAS Christmas in July Saturday 9 & Sunday 10 July 2011 This yearʼs Christmas in July is going to be held in Gympie, home of the Roadcraft Skidpan and Performax International. If we are going to Gympie, we might as well utilize both these companies, so Performax has kindly offered to sponsor our day at the Skidpan. Meeting at MacDonalds, Bryant Road, Loganholme for a brekky fix, then away by 8.30am. Meet the Northsiders at Shell Service Station, Nudgee Road, Nudgee and arrive in Gympie to play ‘skids’ all day. Overnight accommodation, traditional Christmas dinner (including Santa, Elf & presents) and full buffet breakfast has been arranged at the brand new Mary River Hotel. After breakfast, we’ll leave Gympie and head back home via Maleny for a walk, shopping and coffee. The cost should be $160 per person (twin share), depending on numbers, for skid pan, accommodation, Christmas dinner and buffet breakfast. Ali has pre-booked rooms and food to tempt those considering joining us. Details will be finalized next month. As this is one of our core events during the year, it would be great to have as many as possible join in. The skid pan is not compulsory but very entertaining to watch as many found out last year watching Ali learning to drift! Book you place now by phoning Peter 0409 003 300 or Ian 0417 708 844. April 2011 AMERICAN ICONS DAY Sunday 29 May 2011 15 Corvettes, a few Chevs and about 75 Harleys met at Morgan and Wacker (Newstead) for an 8.30am departure. The day was cloudy and looked like possible rain but this did not deter the cars and bikers. Just before the turn off to the old gateway road, Peter Turner’s ’69 Corvette blew a top radiator hose. This looked quite spectacular from 5 Corvettes behind him as there was a huge plume of steam - we all hoped it was NOT smoke. Three members stayed back to assist. The first part of the run went on the “old Gympie Road” stopping at Beerwah State School for morning tea. For $6 each we were treated to a superb spread of fruit, cakes and assorted hot and cold nibbles provided by the P&C of the State School. The next part of the Run went through winding and very scenic back roads ending up near Gympie. Several members returned to Brisbane whilst the majority drove to Kin Kin- just a Pub and 2 shops. The “country Life” pub was well able to cater for the hungry hordes. The weather held for us, even though some patches of the road were wet. The H.O.G.S. group are to be commended for their organisational skills. There were 2 bikes stationed at every turn to ensure every one kept up with the group. GENERAL BUSINESS John (Wheels) Webro asked anybody if they would like to come along in his car for this year’s Endeavour Rally. Leaves Goondiwindi on 11 July and after travelling some 5,000+ kilometres, finishes at Seaworld on July 21. Cost is between $1500 and $2,000 (all inclusive). The Raffle Queen, Susie Webro, made a special presentation to Glenn Miller of 2 pairs of thick sports socks for the colder months. He can wear them with his trusty Crocs and by the look of the pair he was wearing at the meeting, the gift came just in time! His trusty old pair have been destroyed with an angle grinder incident, so Peter offered to paint his new pair red also. So thoughtful! Nev Solomon reminded all Members that if they put their hand up to be a trip leader, that they must also organise a writeup and some photos of that Event. They don’t have to do it themselves, but need to delegate the jobs. Mike Gocs was nominated to write up the American Icon’s Day on Sunday 29 May. Keith Hosking informed the members that he has purchased another tablecloth from the Melbourne Convention, that we apparently decorated beyond saving, so I fear we may be gathering a Collection! Jaimes Pool reminded everyone of the upcoming AGM in August and asked people to start thinking of who can front the new Committee. Susie Webro also reminded members to PLEASE RSVP to Friday night dinners, as it was embarrassing at last month’s when extra people arrived with no seating available for them. EVENTS COORDINATOR Past Events Friday night dinner @ Mike’s Kitchen was well attended by 26 members and Ribs were pronounced GREAT! Icon’s day on the 29th was attended by 120 bikes (mostly Harleys) and 15 Corvettes and a great day was had by all. Peter thanked the three members who stayed behind with he and Ali, until they could repair their blown radiator hose. They caught up the pack by the end of morning tea. Kev & Tracy from Performax joined the group for lunch at the Kin Kin Hotel. Coming Events 17 June – Glanvilles Dinner at New Farm. More Ribs are on the menu! 19 June – David Glanville’s Slot Car Race Day on the Northside. Southsiders meet at Hyperdome at 8am and the rest at Nerangba Railway Station at 9am. $10 barby lunch. Brad to do bulk email to members as this event didn’t make the magazine in time. Need 10-15 people. 3 July – Independance Day at Lakeside. No tricarthalon this year, just straight 1/8 mile drag races. $20 Entry. Sally to protest to Lakeside organisers about this. 9 July – Merry Skidmas. $160/head. For skidpan only, $50 /day. Money by July meeting please. 10 July – Downunder’s Concourse at Chermside Shopping Centre. All corvette drivers welcome. 23 July – “Billy/Barby” day at the Silk’s house at Bunya Hills. $10/head for adults, kids free. Interest building with carts being madly constructed by Kevin Silk, Ernie Whittle, Ian Moss, Glenn Miller and not sure who else. Who said our boys are competitive!! Nev Solomon is First Aid Officer for the day and asked that children please wear helmets, shoes and gloves. 14 Queensland Corvette Club Inc. minutes of general meeting April 2011 continued 14 August – Annual QCC Concourse at Broadwater Park Southport. Preparations are underway with hopes for a sunny day. Brad & Sally to meet with Camp Quality shortly to determine if they are doing the sausage sizzle this year. Peter showed us the great flyers his daughter Madison had put together and this will feature in next month’s Vetteletter. Could all members PLEASE contact any sponsors they may know, or try to get items for our Goody bags for the day. We are planning some entertainment for the day also, as the Science Fair has relocated. GCCC will allow us to rent the grounds at the Charity rates of $225, so this is great. Sally informed us Performax have already agreed to sponsor us for $700, so that is great news too. Peter asked John Webro if he could ask the Gold Coast Rockers to put on a display on the day. Good sound system is needed for the day. Auto Happenings See Club Calendar page of Vetteletter. EDITOR Kathie away tonight MERCHANDISE Ali had Sales of $180 for May and showed us some great winter specials for the cooler months. The last of the suede men’s jackets sold at the meeting and some long sleeved club shirts are still available. Also the windproof Club lightweight jackets and the red ladies vests. WEBSITE Jaimes reported a record 108,282 hits on our website for May. Not sure why but the numbers are up from all around the world. Members can check it out by going to the bottom of the News page and clicking on “Visitor Details”. We are aiming for 1 Million hits for the year! Mike Gocs wondered if it was because he had been mentioned in a recent American Car magazine, but he was howled down!!! SAFETY OFFICER Nothing to report this month except President Pete’s exhaust hose blow out at American Icon’s Day. Luckily Tom Vanderreyden is a handy bush mechanic and was able to patch it up enough for Pete to complete the run. Thanks Tom! Ernie reminded people to please put any club photos they have on stick for him to include in the very popular “Ernie’s photo bucket” on the website. TECHNICAL ADVISOR Mike Gocs was nominated for this role at the General meetings! FUNDRAISING. Congratulations to our lucky winners of tonight’s raffles: Lucky Door prize – (Stickers, pen, stubby cooler, choccie) – Nev Solomon 1st Prize – (red car rug with white stars) – Carolee Roberts. 2nd Prize – (Planer in handy carry box) – Nev Solomon –AGAIN! But dip hard into the throttle and the ZR1’s exhaust butterflies open while the car unleashes its full 476kW and 819Nm. of torque to the rear tires – and this amount of grunt only needs to move around 1500kg, more than 300kg less than a Commodore. Then listen to the glorious, ripping exhaust note that’s music to any enthusiast’s ear. The fastest Corvette ever With a top speed of 330km/h and acceleration of 0-100km in 3.3 seconds it’s scary – unless you’re a racing car driver. The ZR1 will easily do 110km in first gear! To put performance numbers in perspective, the ZR1 has about 10% more power than the latest Ferrari 458 Italia and Lamborghini Gallardo V10 supercars – and a staggering 50% more torque than either of the Italians.
