Debbie and I escorted everybody to Chester, stopping at Home Hardware which is across the road from Tim Horton’s for what has become over the last few years our pit stop on the way down to Bridgewater. After our pit stop we went on to Mahone Bay where we met up with Ross & Carla Pentz. They made arrangements for our visit to Blair’s and setup our restaurant. Many of us had things to talk to Blair about and some of us picked up some parts. We all went for a walk to see the “toys” in various conditions what we would love to make a home for in our garage. After a few stories we were off to the Waves Restaurant for supper. Thanks again for everyone that made this a great start for the events for 2013. I must say the first event was more interesting than usual. When we got to the meeting spot there was a police car in front of the Corvettes, I figured one of our new Z06 owners was having a little too much fun. Come to find out the Policeman has just purchased a Corvette and was enquiring about becoming a member. Also with so many members changing Corvettes this year and new members it looked like a new club, which is very good indeed (some new toys to look at). Our next event is Calvin and Linda’s event on May 19. We start at 1pm at Tim Horton’s, Bedford Commons. They always have an interesting run so come on out and join us. The first Wednesday night cruise night started on Wednesday May 15th. This will run every week, weather permitting. Meet at the Chicken Burger for 6:00 leaving between 6:30 - 6:45 for a short drive then a stop for coffee. Please contact Calvin 456-7989 or Orrie 497-1161 if you have any questions. Thursday Night get together at downtown Truro, at Sobey’s has not started yet. I will post it ASAP. Each week Debbie will send out a reminder on Wednesday night about the event that is going to be on for that weekend. If we come across some extra stuff (car shows, cruises) we will send out an e-mail to let you know. Please keep in mind we have a number of weekend trips, some that have to be booked well in advance. I know a lot of you wait until the week before the event to decide if you are going but waiting that close might mean not getting a motel. So make a decision to join us and book today, you can always cancel later if you can’t go. ~ Brian Volume 2013, Issue 2 Page 4 President’s Message...continued June 14, 15 & 16—Fredericton Corvette Show- June 15. We are staying at the Howard Johnson, 985 Prospect Road, 1-506-462-4444. We are booked for both Friday June 14 & Saturday June 15. This Corvette only show is always a good time. Please make your cheque or money order payable to: Corvette Club of Nova Scotia Thank you! Volume 2013, Issue 2 View From the 2nd Level Page 6 Well here we are after a long winter’s nap the toys are finally out of the toy box with the 1st run of the season to Blair Moland’s. As Brian mentioned the Wed night cruises have also started up as of May 15. Unless otherwise advised the meeting place this year for the Wed cruises will be the Chicken Burger in Bedford, the group will be pulling out approx 6:30-6:45PM, although many of us try to get there for 6’ish to have a few min to say hi to everyone. If you’re running a bit late (like I was on the 15th) and you want to make sure the group doesn’t head out without you, you can give a quick call to either Orrie Flick at 902 497 1161 or Calvin Pearce at 902 456 7989 to let them know you’re on your way but a few min late. It looks like another busy season this year, there are already several weekend runs planned as well as lots of car shows to show off your prizes possessions. There are several new cars this year, and the most popular one seems to be the C6 Z06 as several were picked up over the winter. As those who have acquired Z06’s will tell you it’s hard to get a better performing car at a lower $, it doesn’t get much better, they’re animals when you let them off the leash but tame enough to use as a daily driver (if you can keep your foot out of it, which is a bit difficult for some of us). To all those who have picked up new cars this year, new, old, Z06’s, coupes etc congratulations to you all on your new purchases. Our CCNS Show & Shine will be the Maritime Meet held on Sat July 27 at Stuart Kia in Truro. I’d like to thank Rob Stuart for offering his dealership space again this year, Saturdays are usually the busiest days for car dealerships and it’s huge for Rob to offer to clear his lot and make it available to us for our show, a big thank you to Rob Stuart for us continued support. We had a great day last year, almost too great as a lot of people were looking for that little patch of shade for a bit or relief from the hot sun, let’s hope for a similar problem again this year as I for one have just about had enough of all the rain we’ve had this spring and I’m ready for some dry pavement. As always I’d encourage you if you make it to just 1 car show this year make it our own Maritime Meet as we’d like to have a high a turn out as possible for this. We also like to try to gather up as many prizes as possible, the more we collect the more we can give out and that helps draw in more cars from further away. The Maritime Meet is still about 2 months away but to get the word out early if anyone is able to assist with prize donations that would be awesome, no matter how many, big or small all prize donations are appreciated, even if it’s just a ball hat, shirt etc from your place of work, the more we collect the more we can give out. For anyone who is able to collect 1, 2 or more prizes just send an email to Debbie ([email protected]) and let her know what you have and bring it with you on the day of the show. If it’s too large for your Corvette or you’d prefer not to put it in your Vette just let me know ([email protected] or ph# 902 802 3524) as I usually make a run up 1-2 days prior with the truck to drop off stuff for the show so I can make arrangements with you to pick up anything you may have for the show locally and I will be happy to drop off to Truro for you prior to July 27th. As always, stay save and have fun, see you at one of the upcoming runs. Volume 2013, Issue 2 View From the 2nd Level Page 7 …...Continued Just in case anyone missed it in last month’s newsletter, I’ll mention again that Debbie has created a separate contact list for anyone interested in the 2014 Carlisle/Bowling Green trip. Some have already committed while others may just be considering it for now and making a final decision at a later date if you’re going or not, if you’ve already committed to going or just interested in keeping in touch with the developments for this trip, let Debbie know and ask her to add you to the 2014 Bowling Green mailing list, it’s easier to delete the email than it is to not have the info at all. That’s about it for this month, I’ll close with the “you might be a Corvette owner if” below. As always, stay safe and have fun, see you at one of the upcoming runs. You might just be a Corvette owner if!!!! -If, instead of your spouse, you carry a picture of your car in your wallet (or have it as your screen saver/background on your computer or cell phone). -You hang pictures of Vette’s in your GARAGE so she's not lonely. -If you've actually had a momentary twinge of worry at night, when you turn out the light in the garage, about leaving your Vette alone in the dark. -You spend more time vacuuming the 20 square feet of carpet in your Vette than your 2000 square foot house. -Feel that you must scrub the underside, you never know, some mechanic may get the wrong impression of you if it's dirty. -Find yourself looking at your reflection in large plate glass windows as you drive by. (You know you have, just admit it!) ~ Troy Page 8 Volume 2013, Issue 2 Editors Notes Hi everyone… I guess one of the advantages of being ‘Editor’ is you get to have the last word! I’m climbing on my soap box! The views expressed below are strictly my own and not those of the Executive of the Corvette Club and are not directed at any specific member of the Club and are expressed without prejudice. We enjoy our vette and like getting out on the Sunday cruises/runs with other Club members. We enjoy the travels around the highways and byways of our beautiful province and like exploring the various communities and areas. One of my issues is the ‘pace’ at which we travel through some of the secondary roads on our cruises. Many of these roads/areas are new territory to many of us and we would like to enjoy the scenery….often we feel like we’re in a race to keep up with everyone! I can understand when we are on the 100 series highways we can pick up the pace and obviously drive at posted speed limits. I don’t enjoy our pace on the secondary roadways!! The roads are not maintained as well as the 100 series highways. There are many more turns and bends, as well as frequency of vehicles entering and exiting these roadways from their driveways, businesses, etc. I would like to see the cruise leaders travel at a bit slower pace. I know not all our members have the GMRS radios. On several occasions, even though we do have radios, we can get separated if the directions are not relayed. A slower pace would enable us to stay together as a group and thus alleviate this problem. I’m not implying we travel at a snail’s pace but would like to see us travel at a more ’leisurely’ pace. As I stated this is often new territory to many of us and we are not as familiar with the area as the cruise leader might be who would have planned the route for the run. To those of you heading to Bar Harbor—hope you have a great time and safe travels. Matt uploaded some pictures of our first run of the season to the Club website—check it out at www.corvetteclubofnovascotia.ca. If there’s anything you would like to see included in the Newsletter, or on the website, please make sure you let us know—this is ‘your’ Club and your views, comments and opinions are welcome! Each club thanked GMCC for hosting the meeting For the benefit of everyone, introductions of name and club representing was done. First group to speak was CSNB. Dorothy Miller, Vice President, was there along with Bill Brown. CSNB announced that the location for their show is changed to the parking lot at Brett Chev Olds on Rothesay Avenue on August 9-10th. The change of venue was requested by their major sponsor. Bill, representing Committee Chair, Raymond Cromwell, spoke to the event as explaining that logistics are still being worked upon and are well underway. More details to follow, the Friday Night Meet & Greet location to be confirmed. Also, Dorothy announced that CSNB President Steve Vautour is the Canadian Leader for the 2014 New England Caravan to Bowling Green. Details to the event can be found at www.nationalcorvettecaravan.com\NewEngland. Next up was the PEICC and Club President Basil Hambly announced the details of the 2013 Vettefest for August 17-18th. Same location and same general format as previous years. There was discussion on accommodations and unfortunately due to the event time, hotels are really at a premium and it is not possible to have everyone in the same spot. Canada’s Best Value is the preferred hotel for the event with limited availability. (ContinuedN.) Volume 2013, Issue 2 Page 10 SECRETARY’S REPORT...Continued Although very early in discussions, the PEICC is having talks with Hillside Motors, the GM dealer in Charlottetown on a potential sponsor relationship. CCNS President Brian Palmer indicated that their group currently has 82 members. Debbie is acting Events Coordinator for the Nova Scotia Club. Debbie talked about their February Meeting on their “Trip of a Lifetime” for 2014 to Carlisle, Bowling Green and Lake George. Maritime Meet will be held on July 27th at Stuart’s KIA in Truro with the same format as in previous years. There is a change of venue for their Supper which is planned at 4pm at the Super 8. More details to follow. CCNS will once again have a group going to Corvettes at Carlisle from August 21-27th. Debbie noted that this is the last year that the Holiday Inn would be honouring the $99/ night accommodations. Speaking for the RVV group, Vernon spoke of an event that their Club has taken on over the winter, a Monthly Breakfast on the 3rd Sunday of the month. He indicated that this has proven to be a very successful and well attended outing. Their first official outing is a May 11th run to Woodstock. They will also be attending a popular, well organized parade in Minto. Fibreglass Alley plans are well underway and scheduled for June 14-16th. Details have been sent out and will be re-sent shortly. Plans include their Casino Night and other fun events at the Capital Winter Curling Club. Official hotels for this event are the Delta and Robin’s Inn. Please book rooms ASAP as they fill up fast. For the first time in 25 years a car show, Fred-Rod Custom Car & Bike Show will take place on April 26-28th at the Fredericton Exhibition Centre. RVV will have 7 cars in this show. Last up, GMCC spoke to the opening event, Radical Speed Sport and our 8 car display at the Moncton Coliseum from April 19-21st. Our first group function will be on Sunday May 19th, in collaboration with CSNB for a Barbeque at the Maritime Motorsports Museum in Petitcodiac. The question of having a run planned in conjunction with this Barbeque was asked. Is there someone willing to organize? Next, we discussed the Lounsbury Fun Day to be held in the Parking Lot of Lounsbury’s from 10am-3pm. Following this, we spoke about the Atlantic Nationals and the GMCC Show & Shine on July 13th. There was discussion on the parking situation at Centennial Park, specific to people that may need to leave early. As well, the group discussed the possibility of having vehicles parked according to Class. It is difficult given the staggered arrival times, however, the groups from RVV and CSNB said response to this has been overwhelmingly positive to this. There was also questions regarding plans for a meal afterward on Saturday, it was well received last year and also the Friday Cruise. All groups indicated that everyone was welcome to their respective runs. Meeting adjourned at 12 Noon. Brian & I are going to RVV's show on Friday and are staying at the Howard Johnson on Prospect Road. Please let me know if you are planning to travel up with us. Also we have blocks of rooms booked for the PEI show and for Corvettes of Carlisle. Any rooms not placed in individual names will go back to the hotel July 1. If you need info on the rooms please contact me ASAP. In both cases we are dealing with areas that are in high demand because of the weekend involved. In PEI it is Gold Cup & Saucer Weekend and in Carlisle it is of course Corvettes @ Carlisle which draws approximately 6000 Corvettes for the weekend not to mention others without their Vettes. We are the start of Corvette Season and membership fees are due. You can pay at the next event or send a cheque for $35 payable to the Corvette Club Of NS at 12828 Hwy 4, Wentworth B0M 1Z0 ~ Debbie Volume 2013, Issue 2 Page 11 Bar Harbor, Maine and surrounding areas, Thursday May 30 – Sunday June 2. A black version of the upcoming sports car was recently spotted on a film set for the movie, located on theNational Mall in Washington D.C. YouTube user Jason Vandervliet was able to make this video and confirmed that actress Scarlett Johansson was seen driving the car as part of her role as Russian-spy-turned-American-ally Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow. Jalopnik points out that the video also features the movie’s director, Chris Evans, who is seen walking up to the car and presumably giving instructions to its driver. So far Chevrolet has only announced its Corvette Stingray (both coupe and convertible), which will serve as the base trim of the new seventh-generation ‘Vette and have a starting price of just $51,995 when you include destination. Not a bad deal considering you’ll get at least 450 horsepower under the hood, 0-60 mph in under 4.0 seconds bragging rights. The car doesn’t go on sale until the third quarter of the year, so it’s not clear if the black Corvette is a pre-production version or one of the first production models.
