And your team could take home that title, grill forks raised high! The competition will start with a level playing field: everyone will have the same meats, be in the same location and have the same time constraints. But thrown into the mix will be individual rubs, sauces or marinades, grill temperatures and methods of cooking that will leave someone going home with braggin’ rights for the next year. Registration is now open and space is limited. Register early for the best deal - $115 per team before December 20th and $150 after that date. The cook-off will be held at the lake in Carolina Beach at the junction of Lake Park Blvd. and Atlanta Avenue. Admission is free, and tickets can be purchased to sample the BBQs after the double-blind judging is completed. There will be three bands; The Cut opens, next is local favorite Bibis Ellison and the headliner will be Wilmington’s own Machine Gun. In addition, there will be raffles, arts and craft vendors plus more food and drink for purchase. Proceeds benefit Step Up For Soldiers, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of our disabled veterans and their families. This year Step Up is proud to announce a new project, “Soldier Build”, a plan to build a transitional home for veterans along with their families - who are attending local universities. The house will be built along the lines of a Habitat for Humanity home (i.e. with hard work, sweat and determination), and Step Up For Soldiers is starting a donation program in order to supply the materials needed for the house and the overall project. Proceeds from this event will help to fund this project. Call 910-431-8122 or www.stepupforsoldiers.org. The Federal Point History Center is now a ticket outlet for Wilmington Water Tours. You can call 910.458.0502 or drop by and reserve tickets for any of their trips. The History Center will receive a small percentage of each ticket they sell. https://www.facebook.com/PleasureIslandNC?ref=hl#!/ events/652343338121016/? ref_newsfeed_story_type=regular Page 9 Happenings Around The Island CBES AIG Marine Science BEACH SWEEP ON NOVEMBER 9TH The Carolina Beach Elementary School AIG Marine Science Class, in conjunction with the Aquarium at Fort Fisher, is sponsoring a “PIPE TO PIER” Beach Sweep. Page 12 Message From The President Members: We would like to take this opportunity to announce that Greg Reynolds has been appointed to the position of Executive Director of the Pleasure Island Chambe of Commerce. The Executive Board of the Board of Directoirs felt this was an necessary “re-alignment’ of position and title to truly reflect the important role that Greg Reynolds plays in the day-to-day operations of the Chamber. From the Membership point-of-view, you will not notice any real changes, however Greg’s old title of Assistant Director did not truly reflect the role Greg performs. Greg came to the Chamber almost 7 years ago when I asked him to consider becoming a Director for the Chamber. Greg embraced this volunteer position with enthusiasm and professionalism, taking time off from his busy duties as a local Architect with Reynolds/Architecture. As the economy slowed in 2010, a vacancy opened when Aimee Zimmerman left for DC and I asked Greg if he would consider stepping into this position temporarily. As you all know, we have never looked back and I feel that we have the team in place to take the Pleasure Island Chamber to new heights and greater opportunities. Greg continues with his Architectural practice today in a reduced capacity, but brings all of that knowledge and experience to the Chamber and the many different ‘hats’ we have to wear on a daily basis. Greg has always been very involved in the local happenings around Carolina Beach Town Hall and currently serves as the Chairman of the Carolina Beach Planning and Zoning Commission and is an active member of the CB Boardwalk Improvement Committee. He was a previous member of the Carolina Beach Marketing Advisory Committee, the Carolina Beach Board of Adjustment and a former Director of CBP3. Greg is a familiar face around town..stop him anytime and he will be glad to tell you about how great it is to live, work and play on Pleasure Island! A few quick reminders for the upcoming month. Get out and V-O-T-E on Tuesday, November 5th (you can’t complain unless you participate), Business After Hours at Michael’s Seafood Restaurant on Wednesday, November 13th, come out and volunteer to help with Christmas By The Sea and Light Up the Lake, remember to shop locally (very, very important) and have a very safe Holiday Season. Thank you to all of our sponsors, our Board of Directors, all of our great volunteers, Town staffs & elected officials and to you—our Members that help make this the best place in the World. Gail McCloskey, President Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce ISLAND DAY—KURE BEACH OCEAN FRONT PARK—SEPTEMBER 29th Island Day 2013 September 29th Kure Beach Ocean Front Park Everyone came out and enjoyed an absolutely beautiful “Island Day” complete with hot dogs, soda, horse rides, kids games, dancers, hose rides and music all day.
