Welcome to the Donnybrook!
Many thanks to the hundreds in attendance at tonight’s boxing exhibition.
Thanks also to the Drimnagh Boxing Club for accepting our invitation. And
let’s not forget the hard-working committee that gave their all to put on this
event, soliciting sponsorships, program ads, donations, selling raffle tickets,
and preparing eleven young men from Pittsburgh for this competition.
Nearly a century ago, to the day (April 6, 1914), a well known Irish prize
fighter, living in Pittsburgh, Patsy Brannigan, was arrested for inciting a riot in
the Woods Run area of the North Side, just a few blocks away. At that time, the
issue of Home Rule in Ireland was before the British parliament. For centuries a
subjugated territory of the British Empire, Ireland held hope for some modicum
of freedom and independence. Patsy was for home rule. But the ruling class in
Great Britain, and much of Pittsburgh’s elite authority were against it.
Needless to say, Patsy’s stand made him an easy person to blame for the chaos
at Woods Run.
The conflict that defined Ireland over the past century had as much to do about
class as it did about religion. The ruling elite, comfortable in their lifestyles,
wealthy, educated, and dependent on a cheap labor force that ensured maximum
profits, were threatened by “upstarts” like Patsy Brannigan and others who spoke
on behalf of the masses. The powerful resorted to blaming “troublemakers;”
threatening workers with dismissals; discouraging workers from mingling with
others based on race, religion, ethnic background; and colluding with government and elected officials to maintain the status quo.
Such was the case in Ireland in 1914. Such is the case in many developed and
undeveloped nations today.
In 1989, Sister Michele O’Leary formed the Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh to
promote peace and reconciliation among Catholics and Protestants in Northern
Ireland and economic development for all of Ireland. It didn’t take long to realize that most people in Ireland, North and South, regardless of religion, wanted
the same things. Good jobs, security, justice, fairness, decent schools. Through
our training programs for Ireland’s Catholic and Protestant unemployed, they
found more in common than they imagined. And religion didn’t really matter
that much.
Tonight we recognize the tremendous support of Pittsburgh Organized Labor for
this event, and their ongoing advocacy for justice and equality.

area Pittsburgh Nonprofits. Any proceeds generated from this event or
future events will be used by these nonprofit organizations to serve
Pittsburgh area youth.
Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh
The Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh’s mission is to promote mutual understanding of the Catholic and Protestant traditions in Northern Ireland and
economic development throughout all of Ireland. The Institute fulfills its
mission by providing quality programs in job training, economic development, leadership development, educational alliances and reconciliation.
The Institute is a change-oriented organization that collaborates with
industry, educational and government institutions in the development of
all programs.
Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League
Our mission is to provide positive and safe crime prevention programs;
that utilizes educational, athletic and recreational activities to create
trust between law enforcement and youth. Our vision is based on young
people if reached early enough can develop strong positive attitudes
towards school, community and law enforcement. The Western
Pennsylvania Police Athletic League a member of the National Association of Police Athletic Leagues was founded in 1978.
Hibernian Celtic Athletic Fund
The Hibernian Celtic Athletic Fund was formed in the fall of 2013 by
seven members of The Allegheny County Ancient Order of Hibernians
(AOH). The organization began as a start up program of the AOH
Allegheny county board, but soon became an independent Non-Profit
organization benefiting youth athletics in Allegheny County. The first
venture was a highly successful youth basketball program, in which over
one hundred and twenty young athletes participated in and grew as both
players and young men and women. Our organization was fortunate
enough to team up with the Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh, and the
Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League to bring you “The Pittsburgh Donnybrook Ambassador’s Cup” Featuring the Best Amateur
Boxers from Ireland vs. The Best Amateurs from Pittsburgh in a wonderful celebration of our city’s Irish Boxing History.
The Hibernian Celtic Athletic Fund is committed to building character,
sportsmanship, and a positive attitude in our local youth through
opportunities in athletic programs in Allegheny County.

Michael Carruth heads the Ireland team up. Michael Carruth, a southpaw Irish Olympic boxer from Dublin. He is
best known for winning the welterweight gold medal at the
1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Carruth's medal was
Ireland's first ever-gold medal in boxing. It was also the first
Olympic gold medal for Ireland since Ronnie Delaney
won the Men's 1500m event at the 1956 Olympic
Games in Melbourne. Michael Carruth was born in
Dublin on July 9th 1967. He has worked as a serviceman, an athlete, a boxer, a professional athlete and a
soldier.
Mr. Carruth is working out of the Drimnagh Boxing Club in
Dublin, Ireland. The Drimnagh Boxing club was founded in
1965 to cater for the youth of Drimnagh/North Crumlin
area. Ireland’s premier boxing club over the years won national titles at all grades and provided Ireland's first European Gold Medalist for 38 years in Paul Griffen at Feather
Weight in 1991, climaxing in August 1992 with Michael Carruth's superb win - achieving Ireland's first ever Boxing Gold
Medal in the Olympics. Over the years we have catered for
Irish Dancing classes, Soccer Club training, female boxing,
P.T. and many other activities.

kids -- some troubled, some not, but all in need of direction.

taught hundreds of kids of all ages how to box, how
to channel their aggression into an outlet other than
selling rock or breaking into homes. Cvetic puts on
between 20 and 30 amateur boxing shows per year
at various venues: Bouts have been held at Heinz
Field, the Monroeville Expo Mart and the Pittsburgh Athletic
Association in Oakland. Every dollar made on the fights
goes right back into the program. Mr. Cvetic is working out
of the 3rd Avenue Police Athletic Gym.

HISTORY OF DRIMNAGH BOXING CLUB
2014
First Boxing Club in Ireland to acquire a site,
get planning permission and build their own
state of the art boxing club.
History of Drimnagh
Amateur Boxing Club
Niall MacCarvill, the last survivor of the founding members, was chosen by Christy Healy
and Frank Kerr in 1965 to join them in setting
up a boxing club in the Crumlin/Drimnagh area.
Niall with his architectural and boxing knowledge surveyed the area and listed a number of
vacant sites of interest which we brought into
Mr Frank Feely, Dublin City Manager, who
checked out the sites with his surveyors and
offered us our present site which was 3/5 of
an acre of a 3.5 acre vacant site. We then
applied for planning permission which was
granted after quiet a delay. This was due to
Dublin Corporation having to find a client to
purchase the remainder of the site.
In the meantime a committee was formed,
the club of about 12-14 boys commenced
training in a local youth club- The John Bosco
Club and later the Metropolitan Harriers athletic
club premises at Islandbridge.
The building work commenced in July 1968
with a projected time of approximately 12
months. However due to vandalism and theft
the building programme was set back and it
was finally opened “The Frank Kerr Hall” in May
1970. Frank had died two years before the
opening and fittingly the hall was named after
him. The club was a basic large boxing gym
with a boxing ring and boxing training equipment and two changing rooms with a shower
and a toilet in each.
Over the next 12 years the Drimnagh
Boxing Club had great success under the guiding hands of club coaches, Christy Healy and
Joe Behan, winning titles at all grades and club
team trophies in juvenile, youth, novice, junior
and senior.
In 1981 Austin Carruth and his triplet boys,
Michael, William and Martin joined our club
from Greenhills Boxing Club. The boys were
14years old and began winning titles at all
weights and grades. Austin became one of
our club’s coaches and then when Christy
Healy retired in 1982 on health grounds, Austin
became head coach.
Building work over the Years
Austin joining the club was a great asset with
his boxing and building knowledge. Niall then
began planning to improve the club’s facilities
with 3 extensions and reroofing the club.
Work began slowly over 25 years when
money became available through the I.A.B.A,
Government Sports Grants, club collections
and raffles.
The first job was to replace the asbestos
roof which was cracked and leaking with an
insulated metal sheeting which was carried out
by Connelly Roofing Co, on an estimate of
15,500. However it was completed for a
discount figure of 5,000 as Des Connelly was
a friend of Nialls.
Over the next years we built on 3 major flat
roofed extensions in three stages.
• Extension showers and toilets to one of our
existing changing rooms.
• Two extra changing rooms, male and female.
• Office and a kitchenette.
Our club’s greatest period of success was
1991-92. In 1991 Paul Griffin won the European Gold Medal in Gothenburg. The first Irish
gold medal in 42years, since Maxie McCullough in Oslo 1949.
However the icing on the cake was in 1992
Barcelona Olympics when Michael Carruth won
the welter weight Gold Medal with his father
Austin in his corner. Michael was the first
Irishman to bring home a boxing Olympic gold
medal.

Not to be forgotten is Joe Behan R.I.P who
had such an impact as junior club trainer for all
the new comers to the club, teaching them the
rudiments of the art of boxing before handing
them on to the senior coaches.
The club most of all thank all the members
and voluntary workers without whose help and
enthusiasm the club would not have achieved
what we have over the years, so far.
Finally, in 2008, we installed on site, a
floodlit all-weather 5-a-side soccer and basketball pitch which was officially opened by Michael
Carruth and Brian Kerr (son of the late Frank
Kerr.) The pitch was named the Michael Carruth Pitch.
