CELEBRATIONS
Shulamit Sigal Kurland Dernis, daughter
of Mitchell Dernis and Brenda Kurland,
granddaughter of Pamela and David
Dernis of Lake Worth, Fla., and Dorothy
and Jonathan Kurland of Charleston,
W.Va., will celebrate becoming a bat
mitzvah on Saturday, March 5 at
Congregation Beth Shalom. Shuli is a
sixth-grader at Community Day School.
She is a passionate soccer player for
Arsenal FC and Dynamo, and she enjoys
participating on the CDS soccer, basketball and baseball teams. Her favorite
school subject is math. Shuli’s ongoing
mitzvah project is raising money to pay
for bus fare and other necessities for
refugees who have settled in Pittsburgh.

Levenson/Durst: Dr. David J.
and Debra Caplan Levenson
of Squirrel Hill are pleased to
announce the marriage of
their daughter, Jessica Caplan
Levenson, to Evan John
Durst, son of Philip and Ilene
Riffle of Scottsdale, Ariz. The
wedding was officiated by
Rabbi James A. Gibson on
Oct. 11, 2015, at the
Pittsburgh Field Club.
Jessica’s grandparents are the
late Minnie and Joseph Caplan
and the late Bernice and Nathan
Levenson of Pittsburgh. She is
also the sister of Dr. Joshua
Levenson, a cardiology fellow
in Pittsburgh.
Evan’s grandparents are
David and the late Caryl Shapiro of Scottsdale and Clifford and the late Margaret
Riffle of Ligonier, Pa. He is the brother of Morgan Riffle of Tempe, Ariz.
Jessica is a clinical psychologist and postdoctoral scholar studying sleep medicine
in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh, from which she
received a doctorate in clinical psychology. She graduated from Brandeis University.
Evan, an attorney, is a trust officer with PNC Bank Wealth Management in
Pittsburgh. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and the University of
Pittsburgh School of law.
Jessica and Evan reside in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

I am not at all astute concerning anything to do with financial investing, but I
do believe that we are living in very turbulent economic times. My kishkes tell
me that in contemporary times there is
no such thing as a safe, sure and secure
guaranteed investment. There is economic volatility everywhere you look,
interest rates on deposits are nonexistent, and the stock market is bleeding.

tank. There is one remaining investment
that is guaranteed to grow and continues

portion of Shekalim.
Shekalim is one of the four special
Torah portions that precede Passover
