MARTY DORFNER
NEWSLETTER
OOL Warmly Welcomes the Newest Member of Our Team!
I view my move to OOL as a culmination of the different layers of my
career. I started as a CPA employed in accounting and internal audit in
Financial Services. Following that stint, I worked for two start-up ventures,
one as a financial/accounting recruiter and then 14 years at RGP in
consulting serving as Managing Director of the Pittsburgh Office. Finally,
it was time to consider a move that brought my experience together.
At OOL, I will be establishing a Financial Service and broader Services
Industry specialization and will have cross functional responsibility for
Financial Executive searches.
Part of the appeal was being able to leverage my 20+ years of experience;
however the real draw was the entrepreneurial environment. The
boutique Pittsburgh based firm has 30 years’ experience, an excellent reputation, and boasts an 82% five year retention
rate of placed executives. OOL allows me to return to my roots, my father and all his brothers had their own businesses
in Pittsburgh, and I truly enjoy the small firm environment and the ability to make a lasting impact.

A TRIBUTE TO
RICK BROWN
Richard E. Brown, Executive Vice President, retired from
OOL on February 28, 2014 leaving behind a 30 year legacy
with the firm and a 38 year long recruiting career. To his
clients and candidates, he was known as having an upfront
and honest demeanor, being a fierce business friend, and
always willing to help; he could continuously be counted on
to provide the necessary counsel on topics such as Career
Management, Talent Acquisition, Employer Branding, and
Succession Planning. Some of his favorite phrases included
“leaving behind brand apostles,” “guerilla marketing,” and
“employment destination.” Around the office, we could
always count on Rick to be wearing a smile, and to spread
music and laughter on even the dreariest of days.
Rick’s next steps include Consulting on a number of HR
related topics and remaining on the board of OOL. He will be sincerely missed in our offices but we wish him all the
best on this next great chapter of life! Rock on Rick!
RICK BROWN ON THIRTY YEARS
OF EXECUTIVE RECRUITING
“On April 30, 1984 I, through some good fortune, joined a newly formed executive search firm. Over the years this
firm, O’Connor O’Connor Lordi Ltd., became one of the region’s best recognized firms in the business. Tom O’Connor,
the firm’s founder and CEO, and I would often talk about the future, successes to come, and dreams to be realized. We
were full of confidence that the thought of failure never really entered our minds. We were and still are representative
of that uniquely optimistic American spirit that says the harder you work the luckier you get. We were starting the firm
at the advent of developing technologies that we did not dream of nor could we anticipate…
…Thirty years later I find myself fascinated by the digital tools at my
disposal and my embarrassment at the awkwardness of my proficiency
with them. A lot has changed for the better; however, what has not
changed is equally impressive. Then as now, it all comes down to human
interaction. Our devices that expedite processes do not take the place
of the recruiting art of understanding and drawing out the wonderful
uniqueness of each client and each candidate. I have not yet seen a
candidate tracking system that captures the essence of a woman or a
man and can tell you whether they fit this culture or that.
This is not to demean these devices. They have value in capturing,
collating and processing what has been with astounding speed. What has
not changed for the truly competent recruiter is taking that information,
sitting with a client or candidate and seeing clearly not only what has
been but what can be. It takes human skill to understand that a woman
or a man can change. It takes a skilled and empathetic recruiter to sense,
explore and discover potential. I praise technology and its contribution to
our survival and growth but not as much as I praise the creative potential
of the human spirit that invented it. In thirty years what I have seen
change is the invention of devices that assist us to do what we have
always done well – capture the essence of how an individual can change
tomorrow.”
