FROM THE HEAD FOX
Half a year gone. Time flies when
your having fun. There has been a
lot going on in May.
John Rothacker came into town
and we had a couple of dinner
rides while he was here. It was
great to see him. He and Rocki his
wife moved to Okinawa Japan and
he has been traveling every since
he got there. They will be there for
three years. We wish him all the
best. Anybody traveling to
Okinawa should look them up.
They might like the company.
ready for our month and a half trip
to Mo, Iowa and Wing Ding.
While we are gone Dana and Carol
our Assistant Chapter Directors
will be in charge. Malcolm has
agreed to take the Old Guys Rides
and I thank him.
There are many events in June.
Check the calendar and watch the
e-mail.
We have had several of our members in hospitals and some at home
sick. Get better. We need your
presence with the chapter. Being
sick sucks.
Keep the dirty side down.

We had a great SEMPER FI ride.
We were able to help Fun Bike put
it on and we had many members
show up. Supporting the USMC
Aviation Museum was our way of
showing our support for our military. Fun bike supplied the food
and drink. I think everybody enjoyed themselves.
By the time this is news, the Region Rally will be over. Kay and I
volunteered to handle sign in for
one day. We will be there for two
days and then go home and get

As most of you know ….. Ed and Kay
are going to be lollygagging around
the midwest the next couple of
months. It’s sure going to be
quiet….uh … I mean boring without
them here. Carol and I are going to fill
in while they are gone. We wish them
a safe and FUN vacation – they do
deserve it. A note to Kay …. as a born
and bred foreigner from the midwest it
is your duty to make Ed eat wilted lettuce, okra, grits, and green fried tomatoes …. of course you have to show
him how!
Now back to Chapter stuff.
The Sempri-fi ride was great and boy
oh boy was Ed proud of the number of
Goldwingers that participated. I want
to personally thank all those that participated also. I know I had a lot of
fun and the Howitzer that they shot (or
fired .… which ever is technically correct) twice was pretty interesting.
The FUN RUN is starting to come together. The flyer should be approved
by the 1st week of June. I’m going to
be leading a ride to Chapter M on June
13 and Mary Brinker and my wife are
going up to Chapter Z’s meeting on
the 5th and Chapter R’s meeting on the
6th to start promoting it. Mary – it’s
great to have you on board – THANK
YOU SO MUCH!
I also want to commend Jeff Goodwin
for leading Chapter E’s “Ride with the
Eagles” rally up to Rancho Cucamonga on June 19th. Jeff is a newer
member who is eager to support our
Chapter in one of our weakest areas.
By the way …. he is taking the Road
Captain’s Seminar put on by Mike &
Elma Maury the night before he is
going. Jeff ….. what can I say …
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Carol & I joined the Chapter in December of 2007. Since then …. Besides the regular ride leaders, Carol
& I and Bill and Carrie Hutchins
have been the only members that
have started to lead rides. Jeff ….
you’re the 3rd in 2 ½ years. THANK
YOU SO MUCH.
I also want to recognize the regular
ride leaders.
Ed does a fabulous job with the “Old
Guys” ride and leads many other
rides.
Mike & Elma - what can I say again
… every time I turn around they are
leading a ride.
Bud & Mary – where would we be
without them .… nowhere on Thursday nights anyway.
Bud Swartwood does a great job on
the evening coffee runs during the
summer months.
Robert & Janet L. have put together
the Drive-in movie nights the past
few years in which I have not only

cause. We had a good ride, despite
questionable weather at first. The
sky cleared and the was mostly blue
as we took familiar back roads and
curves, enjoying every bit of it, and
ending up at Miramar Marine Base
to stroll through the museum with Ed
Carroll telling us about each of the
aircraft that was on display. The
other part of the museum was inside
the building and there was a lot of
Mar ine Cor p histor y to be
seen. Very interesting. We were
served lunch of either a hot dog or
hamburger and chips and a drink and
had a nice time mingling with old
and new friends.
Oh how sweet it is, I'm riding again
regularly! Thank you Richard Simmons! Richard called me Friday afternoon and told me to bring my riding gear to the breakfast the next
morning. I certainly wasn't going to
argue with that! I was so excited
about riding again, that I didn't check
all my gear ahead of time and found
when we got to Mission Bay Park,
that I was missing my cord to hook
up to the radio. Thanks to Gerry
Meskill, he had one that I could
use. We had beautiful weather and a
great ride, and Richard promised to
get Gerry's cord back to him when he
saw him next. I went home and immediately put my cord on my helmet.
Just like we need to always check our
bike before we ride, we must also
check our riding gear and make sure
we have what we need for the ride
and everything in proper order.
We had two new members on our
ride with FBC. Please join me in
welcoming Marc & Lisa
Wesley. Marc generally works on
Saturday, but because this was a special ride, he was able to get the day
off to join in.
Hopefully, we'll
see them at many of our other rides
and functions. Again, welcome to
you Marc & Lisa. We're glad to
have you as a part of our GW family,
and hope that you enjoy our wonderful organization as much as the rest
of us "Wingers" have.
The following Saturday, a bunch of
us met at FBC (Fun Bike Center) to
help them support The 'Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum' at Miramar
Marine Air Base. This day was quite
appropriate, for it was 'Armed Forces
Day'. For not being a Chapter event,
FBC had a really good turn out of

our choice. We have called Santee
home for 25 years. While stationed
here, we bought our second bike, a
used 1974 Honda CB750K. What a
superbike! It ended up with a fairing,
trunk bag, Shoei jumbo bags, and
(courtesy of a couple spray cans) a
new paint job. That bike saw a lot of
Hwy 94 for years.
Hi! We are Mary and Bud Brinker.
We’re the CA-1F Dinner Ride Coordinators. We joined GWRRA ten
years ago and have been having a lot
of fun participating in Chapter functions since then.
We both originally hail from Ohio,
where we grew up, went to school and
eventually got married in 1971. At
that time, Bud was in the Navy and
stationed in Norfolk, Va. While we
were there we bought our first bike
together, a brand new 1972 Honda
CL350 street scrambler. It was quite a
machine, but I think we both longed
for something bigger and better (little
did we know what fate had in store
for us).
The Navy sent us to San Diego in
1974. We loved it here. We both decided that when we were through with
the Navy we would stay right here
and live. To this day we don’t regret
Bud got out of the Navy in 1978, and
joined the Sheriff’s Department in
1979. Our first child, Scott, was born
in July of 1979, followed by our
daughter, Sheridan, in May of 1985.
Since then, Sheridan has blessed us
with two lovely granddaughters;
Natalie, 5, and Lilian, 8 months (go
ahead, ask us about them).
In 1986 a friend of ours told us he
was selling his wineberry red 1983
Honda Shadow VT750C. It was water-cooled and shaft driven. It was
quite a step up from the CB750, but
Mary still complained about
“hanging her ass” off the back of a
bike. In 1989, while at Four Corners
on vacation, we saw the biggest bike
we had ever laid eyes on. It was towing a trailer and had Alaska plates on
it. It was a Honda Gold Wing! What
a sight. I told Mary right then and
there, “One of these days we’re
gonna have a rig like that.” Well, 10
years later we did just that. We
bought a used 1996 Honda Gold
Wing Interstate, candy apple red.
Over the next few years we put
100,000 miles on “Big Red”. That’s
what Mary named it. We took it to
our first Wing Ding in 2004

Good Morning California. Spring
has finally blessed us with some
nice weather, and we are definitely taking advantage of it. The
CA-1K Rally offered some intense rides along Mulholland
Drive heading for the coast before
delivering us to the final meeting
place where they served some
great chow and wonderful entertainment. I came within a couple
numbers of winning a set of those
illusive JBJ tires that seem to be at
every rally. The rally gave us the
opportunity to spend some time
with Mom (Teola) Johnson on
Mother’s Day, I hope you all enjoyed the weekend as much as we
did.
Rene & I were a little luckier at
the CA2W Rally out Fresno way
last weekend. We finally broke
our bad luck string and took some
of the 50/25/25 winnings. Still no
tires, but we’ll keep trying. We
were blessed with some great riding weather, and the wolves took
real good care of everyone that
attended. The ride home was
warm, so we got side tracked to a
Dairy Queen to spend some of our
winnings - yep, we are Wingers.
We don’t just slow for the “cone”
zone, we stop.
It’s been fun watching all the
chapters competing for the right to
take the host Chapter Mascot
home with them, its funny how
that silly little stuffed animal can
demand such attention. I understand the District Mascot (Hugo)
is finally migrating south, so be on
the look out for him. The Mascot
game officially ends on August
1st, so keep racking up the points
and take good care of Hugo.
By the time this article circulates,
the Region Rally will have come
& gone. Rene & I would like to
thank all that attended, and a special thanks to all of you that
jumped in to help. June brings us
two more chapter Rally’s, CA1Eagles are hosting their very first
Chapter Rally, so we need everyone to show up in force. CA1Dawg’s then will be hosting their
Hawaiian style event just before
Wing Ding, I’m still having visions of Tim McShane in a grass

skirt that I can’t seem to burn out of my eyes, hopefully the coconuts
will fit better by then.
After June, Chapter Rally’s slow down until after the District Rally, so
that leaves the Summer open for Wing Ding, family fun, and local chapter outings. So be sure to take some time for yourselves in your own
back yard. One thing is for sure, there is a lot shaken in California all
year long.
Until next month... “Hang on - we’re going for a ride”

Summer is coming upon us. So far
this year we have been blessed with
cool comfortable weather. As we
move through June and into July we
can expect the sun to be higher in the
sky and the temperatures to rise as
well. This brings with it several concerns for those of us that are out in the
heat on motorcycles.
When you are out in the twisties you
will undoubtedly come upon some
roads that have had separations repaired with tar. These repairs keep
water from penetrating the road surface causing more damage. The problem for us as riders is that often times
the tar will get soft because of the sun
and heat. Your motorcycle can become unstable as you pass over these
“tar snakes”. The instability is exaggerated when you are leaning the bike
in a turn. Be on the lookout for “tar
snakes” and be prepared to use one or
more of these suggestions.
Slow down, enter corners a bit more
conservatively. As always enter the
corners at or near the outside of the
roadway. A slower entry speed coupled with an outside approach will
allow you to see through the corner
and be able to examine the road surface ahead. With the slower entry
speed you will not need to lean the
bike as severely and will reduce the
side forces that tend to make the bike
wiggle on the slippery tar.
The slower speed gives you a little
more time to pick a line through the
“tar snakes” that minimizes those that
run parallel to your path of travel.
Saying this differently, you want the
cross “tar snakes” the way you would
cross railroad tracks. Ideally they
should be perpendicular to your path
of travel.

“DUMBEST THING I EVER DID ON
A BIKE”
(Inspired by these? Send me yours also
for future editions)
#1 –-- I missed the paved turnoff to
Sun Valley Idaho.
Map showed a DG road OVER the
Sawtooth mountain range.
Took it, fully loaded, with wife on
back.
Road got worse, too proud to turn
back. Turned into a 4-wheel/dirt bike
road.
Many miles of 1st gear, no guardrails,
bike squiggling. When finished, hours
later, front end wobbled.
I figured the front tire carcass was ruined. I never checked the back tire.
Bike wobbled until 40 mph, then
smoothed out.
I rode to Reno like that, freeway
speeds, wife on back, never checked
the back tire.
Bought a new front tire, never checked
the back tire. Still wobbled.
Rode back to San Diego, still full up,
bike almost uncontrollable at low
speeds, was best at 70 mph, never
checked the back tire.
FINALLY looked at back tire, it had a
hole big enough to fit some fingers
into. Never went flat, but wobbled.
#2 --- Okay, this is a combination of
the dumbest and the fastest thing I have
ever done. A friend and I were doing
an Iron Butt Sanctioned Ride. My
friend took off on his FJR leaving me
in the dust. I just couldn't let this happen, so being dumb, I sped up to catch
my friend. When I finally caught up
with him, my speedometer was reading 120mph. Reason, or sanity, finally
prevailed and I backed off the throttle
where once again my friend left me in
the dust. I never did see him for the
rest of the run and I never rode with
him again! Now, I maintain the speed
limit regardless of who is riding with
me.
#3 --- Dumbest Thing: I decided that
I wanted a motorcycle. I went to a
dealer and bought a new 750cc motorcycle. I had no idea how to ride a
motorcycle. I did not tell the dealer
that I did not know how to ride. He
asked me if I was going to ride it
home. I told him that I was in my
pickup truck and asked him to load it
into the truck bed for me. I took the
bike home and had three people help
me get it out of the truck. I learned
how to shift gears by reading the manual. I learned how to ride in a field
next to my house.
#4 –-- Out-ran a police officer in a
car.
I got away with it and never tried it
again.
It was the stupidest thing I have ever
done.
#5 --- DUMBEST, CROSSING A 40
DREGREE ANGLE RR CROSSING
IN THE RAIN WITHOUT COMPENSATING
FOR IT.

innovation!!
#6 --- Dumbest? I'll give you dumb.
For several years I had owned a 1959
BSA single cylinder that had no ignition switch. You set the engine so it
wouldn't idle and that's how you
stopped the engine. I got a pay raise
and bought a BSA 650 Thunderbolt,
the big time! A friend and I were riding to a rally in Scotland the first
week of January and it was snowing,
raining, foggy, cold. All the fun of a
UK rally. We got into a construction
zone around Glasgow and the bike
started spitting back through the carburetor as though it was running lean.
Being a genius I decided that if I gave
it a little choke that would get me
through the traffic until I could take a
look at the carb. When I pulled on the
choke lever the throttle went wide
open! Panicking at going 70mph
headed straight for the back of the
cars in front I reached down with
BOTH HANDS and grabbed a plug
lead in each hand. That stopped the
engine real quick but try and imagine
what happens when two soaking wet
gloves contact very high voltage! I
finally managed to let go of the plug
leads and get the bike pulled over to
the side of the road.
My buddy on the back (editor’s note:
This guy was 2-up!) said "What was
that all about?" I explained about the
throttle going wide open and the only
thing I could think of doing to stop
the engine was pulling off the plug
wires. He looked a me with the kind
of look that said "UHHH?" and asked
"So why didn't you turn off the ignition switch?" I forgot about that new
#7 --- Dumbest thing on a
bike. Stopping the bike in gutter or
street v so that I could not touch the
ground. I did a great Artie Johnson
imitation. Fell over right in front of
my friend.
#8 --- DUMBEST: Happened about
15 years ago. I was riding with a
friend up near Julian Ca. We were
coming up the back side from Borrego just about the time the sun was
setting. I can't remember the turn but
as I was approaching this spot which
bends sharply to the right, I was
blinded by the setting sun and I did
not realize then how sharp that turn
really was. In that instant, I manage
to slow down enough to avoid crossing the double line into oncoming
traffic without laying the bike
down. I did have to pull over to the
side to count the rest of my lucky
stars though. My friend riding behind
me said that I came within inches of a
very sudden stop.
#9 --- We had a brand new iPod, with
passenger hookup. With gloves on,
she attempted to find “a better selection” at my bequest. No protective
cover on the iPod, so it was slippery.
“POOF”! ……….She screamed, I
looked in the right mirror to see it following us on the side of the road. It
still worked, but not so well.

with a lot of tar it will also help if
you can keep a light grip on the
steering. You will find that the handlebars will wander somewhat while
going over the tar similar to riding
on a gravel road. If you can lighten
you grip a little you will not get as
fatigued and the bike will have a tendency to track remarkably well on its
own.
We’ve done many things with the
Chapter in our ten years…Chapter
Educators, 50/50 (I think we were
tearing tickets in our sleep for three
years in that capacity), training seminar instructors, Master Tour Riders,
Halloween Fun Run Coordinators,
Dinner Ride Coordinators, and
we’ve planned and lead too many
rides to remember.
We had the privilege of being selected as Chapter Couple of the Year,
and went on to become California
District Couple. That experience was
a real blast, and I don’t think we’ll
ever forget it.
Good luck, remember to keep the
shiny side up.
We are now the proud owners of a
2007 deep metallic blue GL1800
(“Blue Thunder”). We purchased a
rather large trailer and had it colormatched to the bike. We now have
no problem “packing” the trailer
when we go somewhere, and the new
bike makes riding such a pleasure.
—Friday, June 18 – Road Captain
Seminar, 7 PM
Lastly, Rider Education Activities
for the next 3 months have been
scheduled.
—Saturday, June 26 – Parking Lot
Practice, 9 AM
—Saturday, July 17 – Parking Lot
Practice, 9 AM
—Friday, August 20 – Motorcycle
Crash Scene Response, 7 PM
I think I speak for us both when I say
that the best thing we’ve experienced
in our time with GWRRA is the people…not just in our home Chapter,
but in other California Chapters,
other Districts, Regions, and even
The Seminars will be held at our
home, Maury University and Parking
Lot Practice (PLP) will be held at
8322 Clairemont Mesa Blvd.

Chapter Forum
How to register for and use the forum
By Mike Maury
CA-1F has a Message Board that allows Members to post reports or
stories of general interest for all members to read and/or respond. It is
also a good place for members to post motorcycles or accessories for
sale to the chapter.
You can access the Message Board through the Chapter Website at
www.gwrra-ca1f.org
In the lower left corner click on the link “CA1F FORUM”.
That link opens a window for www.localendar.com which is a public
web site that we have FREE access into.
Our registered members can post their messages of interest onto the
message board. Any member can read the messages, but to reply, you
need to register with www.localendar.com
How to register:
Once you click “CA1F FORUM” you will see a window with message
headers. At the top of that window is the link “Register”. Click Register.
To Registration, provide the following information:
Your E-Mail Address
Your 5 digit postal Zip Code - (This site allows you to search for
events in your area)
You need to type two words as a security response.
Enter a unique user name - (No spaces, and must be unique on
their system)
Enter your own password and re-enter it to confirm.
Accept their terms of use.

seen some great movies with real live actors, but also got to know who can cook
the best brownies around. (Gonna miss you Joyce). We really need to bug
Robert so he will continue this fine CA1F tradition.
Lorenzo, (we’ll call him our specialty ride leader), is our “south of the border”
ride leader. He has an Ensenada Ride scheduled for June 6th and an overnighter
in the works.
That comes out to 3 regular ride leaders, 2 semi-regular ride leaders, 1 new ride
leader, 1 specialty ride leader, and 2 seasonal ride leaders. Not bad for 100+
members? THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH.
We have a lot of other members who are involved in many other ways that
without them the Chapter would not be a success. My special thanks to EVERYONE that volunteers. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Now go for a ride …. You deserve it!

1984 Goldwing 1200
This is a beautiful, pristine bike with only 52,500 miles. Wine red is the color
and it comes with an after market comfort seat which cost $700 new. I have
passenger armrests, it has an oversized wrapping windscreen and it has an
integrated trailer hitch. All this with a Chilton manual and jumper cables as the
only thing left is the highway calling you. It currently has been covered and garaged for 7 months and is going in for diagnostics as it hasn’t started for the
first time. Give Rex a call for pictures at: (619) 847-3003 or email at [email protected]
