Grandparents: In God’s Way
Grandmother-grandchild relationships are simple. Grandmas are short on criticism and long
on love. ~Author Unknown
One of the most powerful handclasps is that of a new grandbaby around the finger of a
grandfather. ~Joy Hargrove
What is it about grandparents that is so lovely? I'd like to say that grandparents are God's
gifts to children. And if they can but see, hear and feel what these people have to give, they
can mature at a fast rate. ~Bill Cosby
My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Gramma, do you know how you and
God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo while I asked, "No, how are we alike?" "You're
both old," he replied. ~Author Unknown
Grandparents are such a gift to so many. I have had the opportunity to read a number of
children’s speeches on “Being thankful for my Grandparents”. I think they have given me a
deeper insight into just how amazingly influential grandparents are. Grandparents share
and teach so much with the little ones and this is the way it should be.
“Life is fast paced, hectic and all too full of important things we need to accomplish, it’s true
that’s the world we exist in. Yet is anything more important than people? Do your children
know their grandparents and great grandparents? Have they heard the stories, the history
and learned from the wisdom they have to share? If your grandparents have passed away
tell them stories so they can learn to respect the elderly and learn where they have come
from.
Try to cultivate a relationship with your children and their grandparents. Relationships are
immeasurable and the influence they can have on your children’s life. Give your child the
opportunity to learn from, to love, to respect and to seek the knowledge and wisdom of an
older person, they will treasure it for a lifetime.
I look forward to meeting and seeing many grandparents and special friends tomorrow at
our celebratory morning.
Kind regards,

BOOKFAIR MONDAY—FRIDAY
8AM to 4PM IN THE MPC
G’day from the APA - Acting Principal
G’day everyone: Welcome to Week 2. Last week we were able to welcome Trevor Sketcher back from his long service
leave to his position as our APRE. It was great having Chris McLeish working with us in Trevor’s absence, but it’s also
great to have Trevor back with us again.
This week Dave is away from school at a personal retreat at Mittagong, NSW as part of his Principal’s Renewal
programme. I think it’s come at a very appropriate time for Dave, given that he spent a large portion of the recent school
holidays here at school making final plans and safety arrangements for the construction we now see taking place around
the school. We wish Dave all the best for his retreat, which will be a huge challenge for him given that it is designed to be
“silent” in the main! Dave likes to take a playful shot at me from time to time for my verbosity, but, given that he’s a man
who doesn’t mind a chat himself, I think this might just test him a little ! While Dave’s away, Carolyn Stewart has been
released to assist us in Admin and I am happy to address any issues that would normally be directed to Dave.
Building and Construction Progress: Well you’d have to be walking around with your head in a bag not to have noticed
the construction areas now in operation throughout the school. As I stated above, Dave spent considerable time over the
holidays working with the site manager and supervisors working out the many safety aspects associated with such a
situation and this one is particularly tricky because it has multiple sites within the school precincts. We have spoken to the
students about the adjusted pedestrian thoroughfares, the safety aspects of such situations and our expectations of them
during this time of construction and they are responding really well. We’ve also spoken to them about construction
personnel and the two methods of identification of those people with authorisation to be here at school – orange Hi Vis
vests and Id Tags. We have encouraged the students to report the presence of anyone on our grounds not wearing the
appropriate identification items to staff members or to parents, so that an appropriate adult can make an approach and
check on the situation and we will give them regular reminders throughout the construction period. We seek your support
in this regard. We also seek your support with regard to gathering times before and after school, especially in and around
the top entrance (Zone 1) construction area between the Admin Block and the Early Years Centre. Parents are asked to
be particularly conscious of your children, especially younger siblings, while waiting in this area, as it only takes a
moment for them to find their way into unsafe territory. I have also noticed that more parent vehicles are finding their way
back into our top entrance area. Can I remind you please that we’ve asked that parents not drive down into the school
entrance and top car park please, as the space is already limited and will probably will become more limited as the
construction process unfolds. There is no doubt that this construction process will cause some inconvenience to us all,
but we know that the end results are going to be brilliant and we are determined that we will operate as normally and as
safely as possible during this time.
Book Fair/Grandparents & Special Friends’ Day: This week we have our annual Book Fair, “Galaxy of Books”, taking
place up in the meeting room of the new MPC. Tomorrow, we celebrate our annual Grandparents & Special Friends’ Day
which will commence with a special assembly in the new MPC at 9:00am. There will be specific information about both of
these events elsewhere in this newsletter and I recommend both of them to you.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend the special assembly tomorrow, as I will be representing Dave (and Jubilee) at a
BCE Principals’ Cluster at Assisi tomorrow morning, but proceedings will be in the very capable hands of Mr Ball and Mr
Sketcher. Being “Grandy” to two beautiful grandchildren myself, I’m disappointed that I won’t be there for this important
event, but I do wish all of our Grandparents and Special Friends all the best for a wonderful visit tomorrow, as you are
very special people in the lives of our students.
Student Progress Reporting:
These commenced last week and continue to progress well. Thank you to all those parents and care-givers who have
taken the time to meet with class teachers thus far, and also to those who have made appointments for later this week. It
is great for students to see their parents and teachers meeting in partnership in support of their learning and
development. I’d like to acknowledge and thank our staff for their dedication and professionalism in making themselves
available before and after school, sometimes into the evening, for these conferences during this fortnight.
Special School Focus: At last Friday’s assembly, Prep U led us beautifully in a reflection about the virtue of “Courage”
and I thought that it would be appropriate for us to use this virtue as our first Special School Focus for Term 3 :
“When dealing with something new you don’t know
Have courage, be brave and just give it a go!”
Courage is an important element in growth and development. As the old saying goes,” if we always do what we’ve
always done, we’ll always get what we’ve always got!” The main message for teachers and parents in this focus is to
encourage our students in trying to extend themselves, because it’s in those moments that they will experience growth,
development and increased confidence. Obviously this needs to be done with care and caution, so that courage doesn’t
become recklessness, so we need to create an environment in which our students feel secure and supported enough to
“have a go” at new or challenging experiences.
Have a great Week 2, everyone!
Regards,
Brian Mason
(Assistant Principal, Administration.)
Resource Centre News
Book coverers URGENTLY Needed
If you have some spare time and would like to volunteer to a worthy cause, we have a stack of books which are ready to
be used except that they need to be covered. Come visit Ann Maree in the Resource Centre if you could help out. All
materials supplied, no offer of help too great or small. Covering can be done at home or in the RC- whatever is most
convenient for you! We currently have a huge bank of Prep / Early Years readers and home readers beyond level 30
ready to be covered.
If you have any spare time and would like to help out by laminating resources for us, come see Deb in the RC. We are
trying to introduce a new spelling program in our Early Years, “Words Their Way”, which is quite intensive to set up and
would gratefully accept any help offered!

From the Assistant Principal Religious Education
It is a joy to be back with the Jubilee community after seven months of long service leave and holidays. My family were
able to be reunited for the Christmas and New Year in Britain. My eldest daughter returned with us to work in Australia.
Amy is a psychologist who is working with troubled adolescents in Logan. Gabrielle remains in Yorkshire studying Law at
Sheffield University. Over the past five months I was able to spend five quality weeks with my elderly parents who are in
care in Maryborough. During the time I have begun a program being formed as a Spiritual Director through the Anglican
Church (with many instructors from the Catholic community). I also had the opportunity to visit a number of schools and
churches over this time to observe and learn.
The warm and encouraging welcome I have received from the Jubilee students has been heartening. Children are such a
blessing to work with. I do look forward to fostering the religious and spiritual life of our community along with you all.
Already I have been briefed by Christine of all the work she did while I was absent. The Local Covenant Church leaders
have met with the Jubilee Admin team to discuss our community and plan for further effective ministry and worship at the
school. I have looked in on the wonderful Fun Day, New Life – Pacific Pines organised here for the last Friday of the
school holidays – thanks to Orrell Bathesby for his new work. I have visited every class and enjoyed prayer and story time
with many of them.
So what is ahead? It is hoped there will be more opportunities for parents and children to pray together at school. We will
be organising some special community Services of Worship, beyond Grandparents Day this week. At the end of term we
will have a Thanksgiving Service for all involved in Emergency Services and next term we will have a service of prayer for
those who have experienced grief and loss. Brisbane Catholic Education is reviewing the Religious Education Curriculum
and as an ecumenical school we will be involved in reviewing the material that we teach here. I am yet to meet with the
Parent Support People and it is pleasing to see this group functioning well.
Looking forward to working with you all in further growing our community.
Yours in Jesus,
Trevor Sketcher, Jubilee APRE
COLES VOUCHERS FOR SPORTS IS BACK !
Within the next week or so you will notice a collection bin for vouchers that you can collect from Coles, in front

AFL Ball Kit Size 3, AFL Training Kit Size 3, Bucket of Rubber Chickens, Motor Skills Development Kit , 2 Table Tennis
Kits, Volleyball Ball Kit, 2xIndoor Table Tennis Tables, Egg and Spoon Set, AFL Ball Kit Size 5.
Where can I collect Coles Sports for Schools vouchers?
For every $10 spent at Coles, Coles Online, BI-LO and Pick n’ Pay supermarkets, customers will receive 1 Coles Sports
for Schools voucher. Bonus vouchers will also be awarded to a customer when they purchases one of our Program
Partner's designated products.
So c’mon! Get collecting and earn sports gear for Jubilee!
AWL News
This afternoon Jubilee's Team 2: Gus Hill, Jake Edwards, Alec Webb, Daniel Littman, Jessica Betzel, Maddi Morely, and

Robina starting at 7pm. Tickets are $25 and $18 for kids. You not only get to see a wonderful movie and a chance to
support the AWL, you also get a glass of champagne and a doggie bag for you very own pooch!! To purchase tickets ring
55099030 or buy them directly from the AWL. Please consider going and support these amazing people. The AWL needs
our help.
Keep on sending in donations of food, blankets, towels and pet toys. Thanks to Luke from Year 7 who donated gear this
week after losing his wonderful dog.
