Time has come for the 176th year of the Greene County
Fair, we are pleased to show you the changes and new events
we have planned. The Greene County Fair Board has worked
hard in producing one of the most exciting fairs I have been
around to witness. This year, we are having two concerts.
Please remember to visit our sponsors and thank them
for their support. Without them our Fair would not be as
successful and entertainment would not be to the caliber we
have planned.
I would like to thank my fellow board members for their
hard work and dedication to the youth of Greene County and
the Fair. The board started planning the 2015 Fair in August
of last year after the 2014 Fair was over. Every Director
spends many hours planning and working on the Fair every
year with little compensation. So, we do this for the love of
the fair.
Lastly I would like to thank our employees and volunteers
for their dedication to the Fair. Without them, we would not
have a Fair.

There will be a “NO RE-ENTRY” policy during the
2015 fair this year. Purchasing a weekly pass or
Membership Ticket for $25 will not only save you
$19 entrance into the fair for the week, but also will
allow you to re-enter the fair. Single day tickets purchased at the gate allow you admission to the fair.
If you leave at any time and return to the fair later
in the day or evening, you must again purchase a
single day ticket.
Exhibiting in the Exhibitor’s Hall
Purchasing a weekly or membership pass entitles
you to exhibit 25 items in the Exhibitor’s Hall at
no additional charge, and 7 days admission to the
fair to come and go as you choose. If you choose
to exhibit more items there will be a $0.50 charge
per item. Purchasing a mini exhibitor ticket allows
you to exhibit 5 items in the Exhibitor Hall and two
admission days into the fair.

Greene County Royalty to be crowned
Greene County Fair officials
have 16 applicants to choose from
for this year’s 4-H royal family.
Four young women vie for the
coveted queen of the fair while 10
compete to be princess. This year
there are no king candidates. In
addition there are two prince candidates.
The annual awards are usually
given to two girls and two boys
in 4-H clubs around the county: a
prince and princess ages 12-14 and
a king and queen age 15 and up.
Queen and king candidates have
a minimum of four years of club
work. Princess and prince candidates should have a minimum of
two years of junior fair work.
All applicants are given an initial interview, scored on poise,
personality and responsiveness
to questioning. Then, applicants
don semi-formal wear and, on
stage Sunday evening at the fair,
are asked two questions. On-stage
interviews are scored on poise,
personality, speaking ability and
overall natural appearance, according to the contest.
Judges look for candidates with
leadership qualities and who can
represent 4-H parades, community
promotions and banquets. Additionally, the royal youth will attend
the next year’s crowning.
Applications are scored on members’ project record, junior fair
activities and community activities. Additionally, applicants write
a narrative describing how junior
fair has impacted their future plans
— an important part of their lives.

Fair poultry show changes

XENIA — When attendees at this year’s Greene
County Fair walk into the
poultry barn, they won’t
hear the squabble of chickens, turkeys and other
birds typical of a normal
year at the fair.
This year isn’t a normal
year.
Yes, thanks to a statewide ban on all live bird
exhibitions announced by
the Ohio Department of
Agriculture in early June,
the poultry hall will be
much quieter than normal
come fair time.
The move was made in a
preventative effort to stop
the spread of the avian
flu from states like Iowa
and Minnesota, where the
disease has hit hardest in
recent months, forcing
poultry owners to slaughter thousands of birds
in hopes of quelling the
disease. No cases of the
disease have been reported
in Ohio, and the ban was
designed to maintain that
status.
So this year at the
Greene County Fair, poultry cages will be replaced
by posters and books, in an
effort to still allow those
who have raised birds to
“show” their efforts. While
the birds won’t physically be at the fairgrounds,
representations of those
animals will be. Exhibitors
will show posters with a
picture of themselves with
their bird, as well as a written statement about their
project and will be interviewed by a judge as a portion of their final scores.
“This year you’re going
to have to have knowledge behind it, not just
bringing in the best bird,”
Mark Everman, director
of the poultry barn for the
Greene County Agricultural Society, said when the
alternative was announced.
“It’s more of what you
know about poultry as a
whole.”
Posters (40 percent),
skill-a-thons (30 percent)
and book checks (30 percent) will make up scores
that will determine champion exhibitor. Project
sales will continue at the
scheduled times, but with
the exhibitor’s poster taking the place the bird normally would in the ring.
The bird ban includes
county and independent
fairs, the Ohio State Fair
and all other gatherings of
birds for show or for sale,
including auctions and
swap meets.
The bird flu has forced
other poultry-producing
states such as Iowa and
Minnesota to kill millions of birds to prevent
the spread of the disease.
According to United States
Department of Agriculture
data, more than 44 million
birds have been affected by
the disease nationwide.

million broilers, 8.5 million
pullets and 2 million turkeys. Ohio’s egg, chicken
and turkey farms are
responsible for more than
14,600 jobs and contribute
$2.3 billion to the state’s
economy.
Ohio’s cancellation of
bird shows followed other
states which have made
similar moves for the 2015
fair season, including Indiana, Pennsylvania, West
Virginia and Michigan.

Plenty of entertainment options at fair

XENIA — One of country music’s hottest young stars is taking a break from
kickin’ up the dust with Luke Bryan to
headline a concert at the Greene County
Fair.
Dustin Lynch, who already has a goldcertified hit, another top 25 single and
is part of Bryan’s 2015 nationwide tour,
will bring his combination of traditional
influences and edgy intensity to the
grandstand Tuesday, Aug. 4 with special
guest Waterloo Revival. Tickets are $25.
Rolling Stone Country said Lynch
was among, “The best things we saw at
CMA Music Fest 2014,” but he won’t be
the only thing fair attendees can see this
year.
There’s plenty of musical options the
entire week.
“(This) is one of our better lineups,”
said entertainment co-chair Amy Test.
“Cole Swindell last year was a magnificent performance, we’re hoping we can
continue on and entertain more than
a certain age group. I think that we’re
going to do real well.”
The smooth Motown sounds of Touch,
which was a top three finalist on NBC’s
“The Winner Is” kicks off the action
8 p.m Sunday, Aug. 2. The band has
shared the stage with Eddie Money, The
Temptations, The Spinners, Al Green
and Ray Charles, and has been known
to bring fans to their feet with energetic
dance performances and engaging personalities.
Chase Bryant, Josh Dorr and Haley
Georgia take the stage 7 p.m. Monday,
Aug. 3. Bryant’s grandfather played
piano in Roy Orbison’s first two bands
and, later for Waylon Jennings. His
uncles co-founded the group Ricochet,
which had several hits in the 1990s.
Dorr, reared on 1990s country music,
brings rock-edged brand of country while
Georgia is an up-and-coming country
singer/songwriter.
American Made, a Dayton-based band,
brings its eclectic mix of 70s, 80s, country, rock and southern rock to the stage 8
p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Fair celebrates 176 years this year
Soon it will be time to attend
the oldest, continuously running county fair west of the
Alleghany Mountains. No other
county fair is older than ours.
It all began in June of 1833
when the Greene County Commissioners issued the following
decree: “Notice be given in the
Xenia Territory this week that
there will be a meeting held at
the Court House in Xenia on
the last Friday in June for the
purpose of organizing an Agricultural Society, to be entitled
the Greene County Agricultural
Society.”
That first fair, held on the
grounds of the Greene County
Court House, was described
as “a place for social relaxation
where neighbors, who rarely
saw their neighbors, could gossip. Horse flesh and the products of the field were the primary attractions at that time.”
Not seeing one’s neighbors
might have been the case often
because at that time, most folks
were living on farms. Some
were in cities, but the majority had to travel some distance
to visit with neighbors. It was
hoped that this fair would bring
people from all over the county
together for a day of entertain-

The second year, the commissioners allotted $30 to the
Agricultural Association to
hold a fair. It wasn’t long before
the court house lawn was not
adequate so seven acres of land
were leased on the Columbus
Pike east of Xenia. The property
was deeded to the Agricultural
Society in 1852. When the Civil
War broke out, a place to train
soldiers was necessary, so the
fairground, located on present
day Fair Street, was utilized as
the training ground.
By 1867, the fair had grown
and was bringing guests from
quite a distance. Once again,
the site was too small for the
type of fair desired, so another
location was sought. A great
deal of discussion took place
in trying to determine the best
location. The Jamestown folks
felt that the fair should be located in the Jamestown-Xenia Pike
(present US 35), but the Xenia
folks were opting for another
location on the north side of
town. That year, a little more
than 36 acres was purchased
from Richard Galloway on what
is now Fairground Road. Jamestown began holding a fair of its
own.
The Greene County Agricultural Society offered shares
in capital stock for the new
venture. Six hundred shares at
$25 each were offered for sale.
In spite of the shares which had
been sold to maintain the property, the society was lacking
funds. The property was sold
to Eli Millen at a Sheriff ’s sale.
Millen, being interested in the
welfare of the entire community,
leased the property back to the
Agricultural Society for a nominal fee.
In 1923, the Millen heirs
deeded the land to the Agricultural Society. Additional

the fair should be discontinued
for the duration of the war, but
the decision was made to go
forward as always. “… the Fair
Board is trying to do all it can
to further all war service, to
encourage the higher and better
production of food and fibers, to
keep our morale and American
spirit at the high plane that has
been achieved by our forefathers. Let us make this the best
Greene County Fair on record.”
In 1945, the theme was “Fight
with Food and Bonds.” That
year the admission was raised
from 40 cents to 50 cents. For
many years, the Fair ran for
three days, but due to continued interest and support, it has
been extended to the present
schedule.
The Fair had been held at
various times between August
and October until in the 1920s,
a definite time was set up for
each fair in Ohio so that adjoining counties do not hold their
fair the same week. The State
Board of Agriculture is responsible for enforcing this rule,
and dates may be changed only
with the consent of that board.
A tornado in 2000 changed the
appearance of the fairground.
New buildings were construted,
and a great many improvements
to the grounds were achieved.

When the major transportation was horse and buggy, and
even in the early days of the
automobile, the fair was a daylong event for most families.
The fair was the social event for
the summer, so folks dressed in
their finest to attend.
About 1910, there was a
young man who entered a contest to be a participant at the
Ohio State Fair, his delight in
winning turned to something
else when he found the “prize”
was an assignment with a bucket, shovel and broom to keep
the livestock judging area neat
and tidy.
The 1915 fair boasted a
record breaking attendance of
20,000 persons on opening day
(Thursday). The fair continued to grow, and the need for
more buildings was apparent.
Between 1923 and 1939, several
buildings were con- structed
including the grandstand, cattle
barn, horse barn and 4-H building. Permanent lighting for evening events was made possible
in 1934, and a WPA project provided city water to the grounds.
World War II brought hardships with many of the county’s
young men being called to
serve their country. In 1943, the
question arose as to whether

Any vehicle parked on
the fairgrounds from Aug.
2-8 must have a reserved
parking permit displayed
in the front window of
the vehicle. These permits are available for
purchase in the Fair office
for $40 each or $45 for
dully trucks. Entering the
fairgrounds without the
proper permit is in violation of parking rules and
the vehicle’s owner will
be charged for towing the
vehicle from the illegal
parking place. If you have
a reserved parking permit,
make sure you are parked
in the right space or you
may be towed from that
space at your expense.
Those persons entering the fairgrounds on
Sales Night are required
to either have a reserved
parking permit or park
in adjacent lot next to
fairgrounds. No person
should be allowed by
those persons on the gate
to enter the fairgrounds
without a reserved permit
in their window. Should
you be given false information regarding parking on
the fairgrounds without a
permit, your vehicle will
be towed at your expense.
It is then your responsibility to contact those
persons working on the
gates for reimbursement
for towing expense. All
gates have special permits
with the number of the
gate on the permit. Do not
try to enter a gate with
the wrong permit.

Changes in the Exhibitor’s Hall
There have been changes in
the way exhibitors will display
their entries for 2015. The
Dining Hall is now officially
known as the Exhibitor’s Hall.
All entries for pre-junior,
junior, teens, household arts,
horticulture and floriculture
will be displayed in the Exhibitor’s Hall. Items to be exhibited will be accepted 8 a.m. to 4
p.m. Tuesday, July 28 and 4-8
p.m. Wednesday, July 29 in the
Exhibitor’s Hall. New this year
is the deadline for entering
horticulture and floriculture.

WBZI Day at the county fair

The Classic Country Radio’s 20th Anniversary Celebration is Thursday, Aug. 6.
There will be a live broadcast and special celebration beginning at 4 p.m. which will include
a free gift for everyone entering fairgrounds.

Braun will perform at the Entertainment Center 6-9 p.m.
This event is free with fair admission, bleachers and shade tent are provided, and lawn

Helping fill local food pantries
Greene County Agricultural Society Board of
Directors are counting on fairgoers to help fill
local food pantries with non-perishable items
during the Greene County Fair.
On Wednesday, Aug. 5 admission to the fair
will be $3 with a non-perishable food item.
The board has a goal to surpass last year’s
collections.

GREENE COUNTY FAIR
Kiddie-Senior Calf Scrambles
The 2015 Kiddie Calf
Scramble sign up will be
held under the pavilion in
front of the Greene County Cattlemen’s booth on
Sunday, Aug. 2. Eligibility
for the kiddie scramble is
that youth must be in 4-H
and between the ages of
9- 13.
A parent or guardian
must be present and has
to sign the waiver. The
scramble will start at 7
p.m. that night. The participants need to be present no later than 6:30 p.m.
Children who are to par-
ticipate in the scramble
are encouraged to wear
helmets as well as shoes
that tie or boots and full
length pants. The Senior
Calf Scramble will follow
the Kiddie event. Youth
had to pre-registered for
that event.
