UNC Pembroke senior Nygel Robinson will present an evening of Sondheim on Thursday, June 19 at 7 p.m. at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library. The Kinston-Lenoir County Friends of the Library proudly present Juneteenth: A Celebration on Saturday, June 21 at 3 p.m. at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library. Juneteenth has become the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Festivities will include African dancing, drumming, singing, storytelling, and performances by local performers and regional acts. After the celebration through the arts, there will be an Old School Fish Fry on the lawn with old school music and dancing. Urban Literature Book Club The Urban Literature Book Club will meet on Tuesday, June 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library to discuss Soul on Ice by Eldridge Cleaver. Eldridge Cleaver was a writer, political activist, who became an early leader of the Black Panther Party. His book, Soul on Ice, is a collection of essays praised by The New York Times Book Review as ―brilliant and revealing.‖ The now-classic memoir shocked, outraged, and ultimately changed the way America looked at the civil rights movement and the black experience. By turns shocking and lyrical, unblinking and raw, the searingly honest memoirs of Eldridge Cleaver are a testament to his unique place in American history. Cleaver writes in Soul on Ice, ―I’m perfectly aware that I’m in prison, that I’m a Negro, and that I have a Higher Uneducation.‖ What Cleaver shows us, on the pages of this now classic autobiography, is how much he was a man. For more information, please contact the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library at 252-527-7066, Ext. 133. Booktalking Consider joining the Booktalking group on Thursday, June 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library for a discussion of Elizabeth Strout’s newest novel, The Burgess Boys. Haunted by the freak accident that killed their father when they were children, Jim and Bob Burgess escaped from their Maine hometown of Shirley Falls for New York City as soon as they possibly could. Jim, successful corporate lawyer, has belittled his bighearted brother their whole lives, and Bob, a Legal Aid attorney who idolizes Jim, has always taken it in stride. Their long-standing dynamic is upended when their sister, Susan—the Burgess sibling who stayed behind—urgently calls them home. Her teenage son, Zach, has gotten himself into a world of trouble, and Susan desperately needs their help. Elizabeth Strout has brought to life two deeply human protagonists whose struggles and triumphs will resonate with readers long after they turn the final page.
