We are committed to providing the best possible programs and services, and we stand by our MISSION “to promote widespread success for our students by providing essential, effective, specialized, and innovative services that foster collaborative, valued partnerships amongst all stakeholders.” We are starting the third year of our Strategic Planning process and will be planning our new Action Steps for our ESC this fall. We welcome participation and feedback from all of our stakeholders and wish to keep the lines of communication open throughout the year. The Greene County ESC takes pride in the services we provide. Those services and programs are alternative education programs, learning center for students with mental health/emotional needs, intensive needs programming, mental health services, related services such as speech, occupational and physical therapy and adaptive physical education, PAX coaching, and other specialized services. We will also tailor professional development programs to meet the needs of our client districts. The Greene County ESC is here to meet the needs of the districts and students whom we serve. I welcome your input and thoughts on how to best do that. Here is to a great school year! Best, Terry Graves-‐Strieter, Superintendent Greene County Educational Service Center Superintendent’s

Related Services The Related Services staff would like to welcome our newest staff members. Our newest OTs are both serving students in Beavercreek City Schools this year. Michele Worrell received her Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of South Alabama. She was most recently a school-‐based OT in the Houston County School system in Georgia. Mary Yelton earned her Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy from Washington University. She has a varied background as a school based OT previously at Miami County ESC and most recently was an OT for in-‐home health care. Ashley Gnau (picture unavailable) is not so new to the GCESC family. After earning her degree as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant from Sinclair Community College, she was an intensive needs classroom aide at our INC last year. Now Ashley is a COTA working at the INC, LC, Beavercreek and Xenia. Nick Schetter has joined the PT team and brings with him a background in sports medicine physical therapy. Nick graduated from the University of Dayton with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. He will serve students in Greeneview and Beavercreek this school year. Julie Carlton has rejoined our Speech Language Pathologist staff this year after a hiatus as a stay at home mom. Last year, Julie was a substitute SLP at Friends preschool for the latter half of the year. This year she is at Friends preschool again, Bellbrook-‐ Sugarcreek preschool, and our INC. The Word is Out! We have been approached by numerous therapy education programs to provide hands-‐on, high quality student internship opportunities because we have such excellent therapists. This fall we already have internships scheduled for students from Xavier University, University of Akron, and Sinclair Community College. Next semester, we will most likely have students from the University of Findlay, Kettering College, and the University of Dayton. This is a great way for our therapists to give back and help prepare quality therapists for generations to come. If you see any of these student interns, please welcome them to the GCESC family! 7 September 2015
Preschool Services-‐ New Staff Members Greeneview Preschool welcomes Rebecca Porterfield (pictured) as a center-‐based teacher. Rebecca comes to us with preschool teaching experience through the Head Start program. She is a great addition to the Greeneview preschool program. Mary Hennosy is welcomed to the Bellbrook Preschool as a center-‐based teacher. This is Mary’s first teaching position and she brings much enthusiasm to the job! Stephanie Siemen (picture unavailable) is a center-‐based preschool teacher in Bellbrook. She has preschool teaching experience in Florida. Donna First will be supervising the Friends Preschool program, serving students from Yellow Springs and Cedar Cliff. Donna has worked in special education as both a supervisor and a school psychologist in several of our Greene county schools. Melissa Davis is a preschool classroom assistant at Friends Preschool in Yellow Springs. She worked the latter part of the last year as a one-‐on-‐one aide. We are happy to have her back in a full-‐time position. 8 September 2015
Greene County Learning Center The Greene County Learning Center has started the year with two new positive initiatives. The first is the PAX Good Behavior Game. PAX has been started in K-‐5 classrooms with the help of our PAX Coach, Sherry Smith. Students are in the process of deciding what they would like to see more of and less of in the classroom and creating classroom posters. In addition to the posters, students are earning “Wacky Prizes” throughout the day. The other new positive initiative is more in-‐depth training and implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Students participated in coming up with expectations for all parts of the building and creating posters to display the expectations throughout the building. There are currently student openings at all grade levels at the Learning Center. If you have any questions about the program or would like to tour the building, please call Jason Miller at 937-‐767-‐1303 x141. The Greene County Learning Center has made some big changes over the summer. We were sad to see some of our staff move on to bigger and better things, but we have added some great people this year. A big welcome to our new staff: Jacob Mahaffey, Aide Sheila Barnett, Aide Beth Talley, Teacher Lillian McCree, Teacher 9 September 2015
Greene County Education Center, Bellbrook Site WELCOME!!! We would like to introduce Dalton Lacey and Diane Bush to the Greene County Education Center, in Bellbrook. Diane Bush will be serving as the new Administrative Assistant for us here, and Dalton Lacey has been hired as an Alternative program assistant. We are thrilled to have them join the ESC and our school family! BRIEF BIOs: Dalton Lacey Dalton Lacey graduated with a BA in Social Work from Bethany College in Wheeling West Virginia. Dalton is currently pursing his Masters of Art in Special Education. His fiancé, Lexa Hill is employed at West Carrollton School District as a fourth grade teacher. Dalton is a Cleveland Cavaliers fan, loves the OSU Buckeyes, enjoys playing basketball in his free time, as well as hanging out with his friends and family. Dalton is an asset to us and we are so pleased to have him on staff. Diane Bush Diane Bush graduated with a BS in Business Administration from Robert Morris University in Corapolis, Pennsylvania. Diane is a long-‐time resident of Bellbrook and has been married to her husband Mike for 26 years. They have 3 children. Diane is a skilled seamstress, a creative problem-‐solver, and her culinary talents are exceptional. We appreciate having Diane permanently on staff with us and we are benefitting from her broad skill set. INC The middle school INC (Intensive Needs Classroom) and the high school INC programs are enjoying their new sensory area. Many efforts were made to establish a safe, calm, and inviting space that was free of distractions that support the unique needs of our adolescent INC students. The teachers planned and designed this space to serve their students, and the resulting benefits are being realized this year. Thank you to Tanya Dodge and Kirsten Johnson for their hard work! The high school INC has been working to get their workshop up and running. They have been requesting and receiving job orders from local schools, including the preparation of various brochures and order forms, collating documents, preparing health and safety medical kits, etc. The high school INC students are also busy filling orders for their buckeye necklaces! Go Bucks!!! Contact Kirsten Johnson @ 848 -‐ 6131 for details about the buckeye necklaces. The elementary INC classroom welcomes Ms. Connie Miller as a classroom assistant. Ms. Miller moved from serving as a high school assistant to the elementary INC program in response to increased student numbers there. Currently, we are running a full house in the elementary program. Our students are busy learning their picture schedules, daily routines, and academics. Self-‐regulation and communication skills are also reinforced through strong behavioral supports that are taught and modeled throughout the school day. We enjoy their positive contribution to our building! 10 September 2015
OA/Academy The Alternative programs have both been working on curriculum updates and revisions and have recently begun their career/transition focus activities for the school year. The Outdoor Advantage program recently earned a pizza reward for the whole class. This occurred as a result of the students meeting their individual academic goals! Congratulations to the students. Andy South (program teacher) has been planning his out-‐of-‐doors field trips for the quarter, and they include several informative sessions with the local naturalist. The activities planned are largely environmental science with follow up English essays. For first quarter, these excursions include; a bug hunt, nature hike, creeking activity, and fishing. The Academy students have begun their academic pursuits and are working also to meet their individual goals. Becky Eakins (program teacher) is working on a key focus on Transition again this year, with objectives being set that extend beyond a narrow focus on the completion high school credits. Through transition planning, our students are able to expand their lens to the development of post-‐graduation plans for themselves that include careers and/or college planning. Several transition activities are being coordinated with Job Coordinator Kristin Irwin and Job Coach Lisa Maxwell to facilitate an individualized approach with the students from both the middle and high school programs. We appreciate their valuable efforts in planning for the future. Academy students whom have met their daily goals are permitted to focus their efforts on the blanket project. The blanket project is a charitable endeavor in which our students assist in the preparation of tie blankets that are slated for donation to the Dayton Children’s Hospital for cancer patients in the oncology unit. This partnership was developed three years ago between the Greene County Education Center and the Forged by Fire organization under Doug Dodge’s leadership. This charitable project culminates in an evening event that is catered by the Webster Street Deli at their site. This event occurs in December each year. We value the partnership and the opportunity for our students to participate in “giving back” to a worthy cause that is close to home and near and dear to our hearts.
