Black History Month celebrates African-Americans’
contributions to American history and development. The
month-long affair was the brainchild of distinguished black
historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Woodson chose the
second week of February because it marked the births of
Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, two influential
figures in Black history. In 1976, President Gerald Ford
issued the first Message of Observance of Black History
Month. Ten years later, Congress designated February
“National Black History Month.”
The Greene County Friends of the Library will hold its
Annual meeting on Tuesday, February 10 at 6:30 p.m. at
the Greene County Public Library. Join us for fun,

Book Chatter
Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes will be the Book Chatter
title discussed on Wednesday, February 18 at 4 p.m. at the
Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library. When Wesley
Boone writes a poem for his high school English class and
reads it aloud, poetry-slam-style, he kicks off a revolution.
Soon his classmates are clamoring to have weekly poetry
sessions. One by one, eighteen students take on the risky
challenge of self-revelation. Award-winning Nikki Grimes
captures the voices of eighteen students through the poetry
they share and the stories they tell, and exposes what lies
beneath the skin, behind the eyes, beyond the masquerade.

jury the work.
The African-American Church in Works
by Ernest J. Gaines
The church has traditionally been cast as the pillar of faith
for African-American communities. This discussion, led by
Dr. Booker T. Anthony, Ph.D., North Carolina Humanities
Road Scholar, attempts to define the role of the Black
church in three works by Ernest J. Gaines. A Lesson Before
Dying, A Gathering of Old Men, and The Autobiography of Miss Jane
Pittman. Gaines’ fiction challenges this belief in a society
where the church does not intervene to combat the
inequalities that are widespread in the South. Dr. Anthony
invites patrons to revisit, with Gaines, the role of the church
to determine if it is merely a new myth designed to pacify
the oppressed. This program will be held at the Greene
County Public Library on Saturday, February 21 at 2 p.m.
and is sponsored by the North Carolina Humanities Council
and the Greene County Friends of the Library. For more
information, please call 252-747-3437.

Kinston-Lenoir County Friends of the Library. For more
