Merrifield’s Very Own Bi-Weekly Newspaper 6 February 2015 FOR JOY: The Class of 2015 show off the spring in their step during the College Interhouse Gala on Friday. From the Executive Head, Dr Guy Hartley Welcome back, everyone, to a new year with the first term very much underway already! A special welcome to a good number of new families who have joined the Merrifield community at the outset of 2015. We trust that you will quickly settle in to the Merrifield environment and be made to feel especially welcome at the school. Merrifield continues to expand and develop in a variety of ways as the school seeks to deliver on its promise of a quality and holistic education in a nurturing and caring academic milieu. It is a great privilege for me to assert confidently that we have a wonderful store of really excellent and committed educators at Merrifield. I can vouch for the fact that we have teachers with a deep, unselfish commitment to the learning needs of students, who go beyond the call of duty in devoting their time to preparing their charges for life. They have a real passion for education and emotionally rich classrooms. It is our primary goal to go way beyond a simple focus on marks, exams, assessments and the curriculum to provide teaching that creates a seamless bond of love and care between home and school; teaching that inspires students, leaving them with life-lasting impressions; teaching that expands the mindset and vision of students and broadens their social outlook. These are lofty objectives, but certainly they are ideals to which we as educators aspire at Merrifield. We look forward to a year of real maturing and personal growth as we go about developing the intellectual, emotional and social foundations of our students in a wider preparation for life. In the words of IEB Chairman, Professor Crain Soudien – “[We] must help young people find, in the opportunity to think, the fullness of their potential as human beings.” 1 Citizens of the Week 6 February Luhle Nqabeni and Zizi Bidla (3P): For being such helpful girls and working so hard in the classroom. David Werling (2L): For always working so hard in class. Gugu Mxenge (1H): For always being kind, thoughtful and helpful. The Grade 11s did their first science practical of the year. Just before the start of the school year, new pupils took part in an orientation. Here new and past students starting Grade 8 get to know each other. The Grade 6 and 7 Enviro Club kicked off the term with their very own Masterchef Competition. Besides delicious taste sensations, the students also focussed on food miles and environmental impacts of food choices. Thank you to Mrs Wetmore for being our judge – Mrs Bachar Technology in the form of Apple ipads will soon be introduced into the classrooms. Mr Lehmann here shows the Grade 8 class how they are to be used. 2 Merrifield Prep School students performed exceptionally well in the 2014 Grade 6 IEB Core Skills Test. Certificates were received last week and the children should be very proud of their fine results.
