I’ve written many health notes but this
is my first editorial.
I was getting some petrol from Rob the
other day and he told me about a
conversation he had with a customer.
The customer said that she usually got
her petrol in Launceston with her
groceries and the 4c per litre discount.
Rob replied by saying he could
understand that, but he hoped that if
she needed help in the future with flat
tyres etc, that he would still be around
to help her. He would be pleased if she
could support him occasionally, as this
would ensure that his business survived
in the town.
This got me thinking about our
community. What would our town be
like without health care, groceries,
newspapers, petrol, banking, hardware,
etc
What is different about shopping in
Lilydale? You know the people who
work in the businesses – and because
they know you, they help you more.
Chatting about what is happening, who
is moving out and who is moving in,
who you can ask to mow the lawns.
Checking on Mrs X who usually goes up
the street every morning, but she didn’t
today – is she OK? You meet people in
the street who you haven’t seen for a
while – catch up on the latest news.
This day-to day communication helps to
keep us all happy and healthy.
That is what I like about being a
pharmacist in Lilydale – my ‘job
satisfaction’ for the past 24 years has
been getting to know you so that I can
help you better.
As a business person, I think about
issues that concern customers - good
service, price and the shopping
experience. How do you find the
The Lilydale Progressive - October 2005
Lilydale CBD? - In half an hour you can
stroll around all the shops and get
everything done without moving the car
or getting a parking ticket. You’ll
probably meet someone you haven’t
seen for a while, catch up with the
football tipping and read the notices in
shop windows. You may even wander
up to the library and on-line centre.
Lilydale CBD - a low stress experience
that doesn’t take all day. How much
does it cost to drive to Launceston and
park?
How many of our young adults started
their working life with after-school or
weekend work in the town? What
would Lilydale be like with fewer small
businesses? Your continued support will
keep Lilydale the special place it is.
Helen Denney
I totally agree with you Helen, not only
would Lilydale be a far poorer place to
shop without our local businesses but
our community would have no voice
either. I know I’ve mentioned it on many
previous occasions, but without our
local businesses there would be no
Progressive for local people and groups
to spread their news in.
So yes, some thing may be a few cents
dearer here in Lilydale than in the “big
city” but hey with the current price of
petrol how much is that bargain in town
really costing you!
Let’s get behind our local businesses and
keep Lilydale a vibrant caring
community.
A quick note of thanks to all those who
have expressed their concern about
Bryan’s recent accident. He’s on the
road to recovery and feeling much
better. (I still have to feed the cows
though ;-))

Neighbour Watch Report
The attendance at this meeting was 13 including Const.
Dean McMahon who was relieving Russell Forsyth.
Our Guest Speaker for this meeting was Peter
Gutwein. He spoke very briefly on his life which has
taken him overseas for a number of years and now he
is living in Launceston. He said that we need to make
use of the fact that we are an island and illicit drugs are
being either brought in or made here. In 2001 there
were 2000 Tasmanians using ecstasy and now there are
about 6000. He said that 98% of vehicles come into
Tasmania on the Spirit boats. This is the main entry
into Tasmania and there is only a sniffer dog for fruit
and vegetables, and these dogs are not trained to sniff
out drugs that may be being brought in. We must keep
Tasmania as a safe state.
The crime rate for the last 8 days is down and no
burglary has been committed on businesses.
Road Safety: He said that we need to educate the
young drivers and get them to respect the road rules
and the cars that they drive. The need to have the
right mental attitude and we may need to upgrade
driving rules for senior drivers. The roads have
deteriorated and there are more vehicles using them
these days. It would pay us to “check below the
bus” when school buses drop children off. This is to
look for the ‘legs’ of children who may have just got off
the bus.
He said that the speed camera revenue should be used
to educate drivers. In some places children have to
wear bright orange smocks when they travel to school
to give drivers better visibility in the winter time. In
some countries where the school buses use flashing
lights to warn that they are about to stop to pick up
children, or let them off, all traffic behind the school
bus must stop.
Peter said that it is good for people to get involved
with their own community. With regards to domestic
violence, the police are dong the best they can.

Police Report:
There was a burglary at a shed in Doaks Road
between 19/8 and 22/8 where a chainsaw was stolen.
Police believe that the suspect was male.
Suspicious Incidents:
Another “cows crossing” sign has been stolen.
Be aware that some log trucks coming out of Prossers
Forest Road are not giving way to traffic heading to
Launceston. You may need to be careful in this area,
but Police have been notified about this matter.
The next meeting will be on October 13th at the
Lilydale Fire Station – new starting time will be 8 p.m.
due to Daylight Saving Time being in.
The Human Life Protection

Health Notes from
Lilydale Pharmacy
Hayfever
Medically speaking, hayfever is known
as allergic rhinitis. Rhinitis means inflammation of the
nasal passages – but the allergic inflammatory process
doesn’t stop at the nose. The symptoms of hayfever
are many and varied. Typically they include sneezing, a
clear nasal discharge, watery, itchy eyes, itchy throat,
blocked nose and lack of energy. Headache sometimes
occurs and the sense of smell can also be affected.
These symptoms can certainly have a serious adverse
effect on work or study, and destroy the enjoyment of
leisure activities.
Hayfever is a global health problem. It affects about
25% of the world’s population. In Australia the
situation is even worse, with about 40% of adults in this
country showing allergy symptoms – usually allergic
rhinitis. This makes hayfever the most common chronic
condition for people consulting their doctor.
Hayfever can be classified as intermittent, where
symptoms occur only now and again and persistent
where the symptoms are evident for more than four
weeks a year or four days a week. Hayfever is further
divided into mild, moderate or severe. In severe hayfever
work, school, leisure activities or sleep are effected.
The spring and summer allergy “season” can extend
from August through to March and the house dust mite
(a common trigger factor for persistent hayfever) can
live happily in our mattresses and carpets throughout
the year.
Oral antihistamines are particularly helpful. Polaramine,
Zadine and Phenergan are effective but can cause
drowsiness in some people. Claratyne, Claramax, Telfast,
Xergic and Zyrtec don’t cause drowsiness and can be
taken once a day.
Decongestant tablets like Sudafed are often used but
they can elevate blood pressure and keep people
awake. Decongestants are more effective when used in
combination with an antihistamine. There are many of
these medications available, including Demazin, Sinutab
and some Chemist Own brands.
If a runny nose is the main problem, the antihistamine
nasal spray Azep is a useful alternative. This can be used
intermittently when it is needed.
For moderate to severe and persistent runny noses
and blocked noses, the corticosteroid nasal sprays are
the best option. Products in this category include
Beconase,Telnase and Rhinocort. These nasal sprays must
be used every day to maintain their effectiveness, but
take a few days of use before they begin to work. They
are safe to use for several months continuously if
needed.
Page 4
Decongestant sprays like Nasex or Sinex can be helpful
over a short period. The problem with these sprays is
‘rebound congestion’ which can occur if the spray is
used for more than 5 days in a row. If used regularly,
have a break for 2 days after 5 days of use.
When using any nasal spray, it should be aimed up the
nose towards the ear, and not straight up. If you can
taste it then the spray is not going to the right place.
For itchy eyes, antihistamine eye drops are more
effective than tablets but sometimes make the eyes
sting. Napthcon causes less stinging. A cold damp cloth
across the eyes will settle them quickly.

Lilydale Retirement Units
At our AGM in September, all positions were filled. I
would like to welcome Mike Armes to the Board.
We now have a final plan for the 4 new units proposed
for the vacant black in Station Road. With Todd
Wilkin we are now moving on to the next stage of the
development, building approval. So, with hopefully
everything falling into place, you may see some action
within the next few months.
It was with much pleasure that I was able to present
Carol Charlton with Life Membership for over 15
years of dedicated service to the unit complex. Thank
you Carol.
If you have any questions about the Units, please
contact any of the Board Members.

Senior Citizens News
Three teams traveled to Ravenswood on the 7th
September for Senior Citizens Day. We had a fun day
but unfortunately no prizes, not even a raffle was won.
Last Wednesday 21st September, Ravenswood over
50’s had their carnival and to our delight Lilydale No. 1
team took out 1st prize beating the runners up by 1
stroke. The team was skipped by Ray and the rest of
the team was Val, Bill and Glenys. Congratulations to
all.
On a sad note, one of our Senior members is in
hospital and we wish him and his family well in the
coming months.

Cost Effective Broadband for Lilydale.
Most people will have heard of broadband or high speed
Internet. Many people in Australia now have access to
ADSL broadband, which for approximately $30 per
month, or sometimes less, gives you a download speed
of 256k. Pay more and the speed can reach 1500k. To
be able to use ADSL your home or business must be
within about 3km of an ADSL enabled telephone
exchange (for ADSL2 this range is extended to ~7km).
Bridport has recently gained an ADSL enabled exchange.
What can you do to help get ADSL at
Lilydale?
Simply register your interest at the ADSL
Demand Register
“The ADSL Demand Register (From
www.broadbandxchange.org)
Telstra has enabled 1000 exchanges across Australia for
ADSL, but there are still many more that are yet to be
upgraded. For Telstra, the dilemma is “Which exchanges
should be upgraded first?” Obviously the answer is those
exchanges serving areas where the demand for ADSL is
greatest.
You now have the opportunity to influence this schedule
by registering your interest in obtaining ADSL, using
Telstra’s
ADSL
Demand
Register:
www.telstra.com.au/demand/index.cfm. You can
register directly via the website, or through your
participating Internet Service Provider. When the
required level of interest for an exchange is reached, the
exchange will be upgraded for ADSL. The required level
of interest will vary from one exchange to another,
depending on factors such as the size of the exchange,
the expected market growth and the cost of the
equipment required.
Registering your interest for ADSL does not commit you
to taking up the service. However, once the required
level of interest for an exchange is reached, your chosen
service provider will contact you to see if you are still
interested in the service.
It will not help to register your interest multiple times,
as only one registration is recorded per telephone
number. However, you can encourage your friends and
colleagues to register if they are interested in obtaining
ADSL, as a way of facilitating the provision of broadband
in your area.
For more information visit the ADSL Demand Register

Lilydale CWA Notes
Lovely to have Eileen back with us for the September
morning meeting. After shared lunch many hands
covered and packed Christmas boxes for the
Samaratins appeal. Seventeen in all – a donation
towards the administration and freight was allocated.
THANK A FARMER FOR YOUR NEXT MEAL
A report on State Conference and AGM held at Camp
Clayton near Ulverstone was given by two delegates.
Much discussion had centred around the vegetable
industry crisis. Mr. Ian Young who had been on the
tractor drive to Canberra addressed members and
answered many questions. Despite all the present
gloom and doom, he feels farming does have a viable
future. Everyone is urged to read labels very carefully
(larger print would be helpful) to find the country of
origin. Buy Australian. More truthful labelling is
needed.
State fundraising projects for the year are Royal Flying
Doctor Service, Road Trauma Support and Hearing
Dogs Training – there will be fund raising we hope for
lots of support. The country for study is Ireland.
The AGM has opened by Ronnie Burns, Ronnie and
wife Maggie have a retreat for youngsters in need of a
break – suffering from illness, or maybe they have been
carers for parents or siblings – named Appin Hall at
Eriba. This area was chosen because of the pure air,
clean water, and was this years fundraising project.
Lilydale’s annual report was judged best in the State.
Next meeting is the 5th October, 10 for 10.30 a.m.
Lunch to share. Venue is OCR – IF the water is
reconnected.
Over the years, many photos,
certificates have been collected and never collated.
This is October’s project. Roll call will be 5c pieces –

Mary Walsh Centre News
A successful AGM was held on the 17th September and
we thank the committee for their commitment to the
centre. We would dearly love to hear from anyone
who is familiar with MYOB computer programme, or
would be prepared to be taught how to use it, in order
to take on the honorary position of treasurer- you are
needed. Please ring the Secretary, Helen Chick, on
63952060 if you would like to know more. Evening
monthly meetings are held on the last Tuesday of the
month.
We greatly miss Jean Arnold who passed away
suddenly during the month. Jean’s faith, enjoyment of
life and sense of fun through difficult circumstances,
and interest and concern for others made her special
to many.
Working Bees have been held in an effort to complete
the Christmas boxes for the Samaritan’s Purse by the
end of the month. This year our boxes are being sent
to needy children in Thailand.
Our cook Lorraine’s daughter, Teagan, has just
returned from an exciting fortnight in Thailand as an
exchange student with several other students. Teagan
spent a day with us sharing her experiences, showing
her photographs and helping in the centre. Teagan also
said that Thailand was VERY HOT.
We farewelled Fiona Richards, our Community
Transport driver from Beaconsfield, who had been
transporting our folk for just two days short of twelve
years. Fiona was presented with a cooking book
“Mama’s Kitchen” and a crystal candy box and shared a
pavlova with us all. We have welcomed our new
Beaconsfield driver, Willem Raak, who brought his wife
Hedi across to meet us. Willem has many tales to tell
of his life in various parts of Western Australia since
his arrival in this country from Germany many years
ago.
Senior’s Week is coming up and on Thursday 6th
October commencing at 10.30am. a Cooking &
Nutrition Demonstration of healthy food preparation,
which is quick and easy to make, will take place and
anyone interested in doing so is most welcome to join
us.
The centre would be grateful to receive used envelopes with the stamps in tact as some people enjoy
cutting around the stamps and post marks to pass on
to the missions for sale.
Our friends from WAY FM radio station, Ellena
Geeves and Margaret Carey, were very welcome
visitors again this month. They brought with them the
tape of our musical requests broadcast recently to play
at the centre for all to hear.
The weather has been warm enough for several walks
to be enjoyed viewing the beautiful spring flowers in
some of the gardens in Lilydale.
A day of fun was had when we all surprised our
coordinator Darian by presenting her with a bag full of
Page 8
fifty wrapped gifts with which to celebrate a certain
milestone birthday. The gifts had to be opened in the
presence of all amidst much laughter. Congratulations
Darian and congratulations are also due to a certain
member of our board who celebrated the same event
in her life on the day of the AGM, which gave a good
reason to celebrate with cake and supper after the
meeting.

Early Settlers’ Final Resting Places
Local Cemeteries of the Past
Where were the final resting places of the local
pioneers?
By the 1860’s, the Lilydale district was being settled.
The current Lilydale cemetery was not in existence at
that time. The first wedding in the Underwood
Methodist church took place in December 1884. Did
others find their final rest in the church grounds?
Bangor was settled early too. Many graves in the local
cemetery have readable headstones. Which were the
earliest?
Families settled in Wyena, Turners Marsh, Lalla and
Karoola. Were their loved ones buried locally; perhaps
in church grounds, small local cemeteries, or even on
family properties?
In collating early burial records it can help to see how
the local district took shape. It can be interesting, and
sometimes surprising to see an area of the district that
was far busier, and more populated than it is today.
Locating the past areas where burials took place helps
to map out a time line of the district.
Do you have any knowledge on the local cemeteries,
family stories, folk lore, newspaper articles, or perhaps
even photos?
Is there something on this topic that you would like to
know more about?
The Lilydale History Group is having a share afternoon
on Sunday October 9th from 2pm till 3.30pm to discuss this topic. If you are interested in sharing in this
topic, please come along. Help us to piece together the
district’s history.
Can’t make it? Why not drop us a line, or give us a call.

We have been receiving quite a lot of enquiry for
properties in our sought after district and sales in the
area over the Winter months have been exceptional.
Spring is the prime time for Real Estate sales so if you
are thinking of selling why not call our local agent Tom
Dancer for a friendly informal discussion regarding your
property.
Weedon Real Estate has been successfully listing and
selling properties in the Lilydale district for close to 15

One cause is the nature of the poker machine. It is
simple to use, requires little money to get started, and
is easily accessible. Many find the lights, music and
sounds highly entertaining. The mechanisms behind
the play are not so simple.
In a keynote address at the National Association for
Gambling Studies in 2003, Dr Michael Walker from
the School of Psychology, University of Sydney
explored this issue and sounded a warning. “For
Queen of the Nile, it is estimated that in 70% of
sessions, at some point the player will be in front …
regular and high frequency players experience winning
on poker machines in more than 50% of sessions, and
also experience recovery of major losses sufficiently
often to believe that it can happen again soon.
“Of course, a true accounting of wins and losses
would quickly reveal that the apparent success is in
fact an illusion. However, most regular and high
frequency players do not appear to keep such
records.”
Research shows that many people do lose track of the
time – and the money – as they play.
Gaming machines retain, on average, 10% or more of
each bet, not each session. This high house edge,
combined with the illusion of apparent success, really
does mean that regular players should closely watch
their spending.
Playing it safe with Poker
Machines
While lotteries are the most popular form of gambling
in Tasmania, it is gaming machines that attract the
highest expenditure: $718 per adult was ‘lost’ on
gaming in 2003/4 according to figures from the
Tasmanian Gaming Commission. Not surprisingly,
gaming machines are the most common form of
gambling among problem gamblers.
How is it that gaming machine players get into
difficulties? It is not as if there is a lack of problem
gambler stories in the newspapers.
The Lilydale Progressive - October 2005
A second cause of problems is gambling for the wrong
reasons. Gambling is not a way to solve financial or
personal problems. Gambling for fun is one thing –
gambling to make money is another.
A third cause of problems can be attributed to wishful
thinking – a responsible gambler is an aware gambler
who is realistic about the part luck plays in gambling.

From the Demons Den
For those folk who have not heard or seen the beaut
photo in ‘Around the Region’ our boys were
victorious. Well done guys.
Their game was played in the true spirit of under age
football. Good teamwork and most important, they
enjoyed themselves.
After speaking to the ‘older heads’ in not just our club
but other Union clubs, the general opinion was that we
have a well coached, disciplined bunch of boys.
Congratulations boys you have done yourselves, your
club and your district proud.

9/10 Football
On Wednesday 21st September, Lilydale played Sheffield for
a place in the Regional Schools State Final.
Lilydale came out in the first quarter kicking a few quick
goals.
In the second quarter we fought it out and got back within
one goal. Lilydale came out and won the third quarter
easily. In the last quarter it was very hard and tough with
Lilydale just hanging on by seven points.
The best players in the backline were Josh Grant, Jake
Tuckerman, Ricky Warren and Alex Blair. In the middle
Drew Bardenhagen, Tom Arnold and Kade Dwyer were
excellent and in the forward line Thane Bardenhagen and
Nathan Collins presented all day.
Final Score—Lilydale

40 Hour Famine Report
24 Students – 3 Staff – 5 DVDs – all night computer games
– Big Breaky to finish.
All these things were part of last Friday’s 40 Hour Famine
sleep over. The night started at 8pm with staff & students
bringing in their sleeping bags & PJ’s. (not that anyone had
much sleep!) It was a great night and the student’s behaviour was excellent. Some students tried to catch a few
zzzz’s but most only dozed, some did not even try and
played computer games from 8pm to 7am. A big breaky
was welcomed by all as the famine came to an end. Everyone was starving and thought about how some people feel
like this all the time and we hope all the funds raised by the
students go a long way to help.
RoboCup
Two students from Lilydale District School recently
placed tenth in the nation at RoboCup Junior Australia,
an annual science, engineering and technology event in
which students design, construct and program robots
which compete in either Dance, Rescue, Premier
Rescue or Soccer Championships.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations Jason Holmberg for winning the AFL
Auskick Competition. Jason flew to Melbourne on
Thursday, participating in the Street Parade on Friday,
attending the AFL Grand Final on Saturday and playing in
the Auskick half time match.
Well Done Jason!
Daniel Robnik and Michael Hutchinson, both in grade 9,
competed in the National Finals at the University of New
South Wales, Sydney between Saturday 3rd and Sunday
4th September. They represented Tasmania in the
Rescue Competition as part of a team made up of
students from Lilydale District School, Clarence High
School, Hutchins School and Scotch Oakburn College.
Daniel and Michael received the opportunity to represent
Tasmania after a team of Lilydale students won the
Rescue Competition at the Tasmanian State Finals of
RoboCup Junior Australia which was held at the
University of Tasmania, Sandy Bay campus, during
August. In the national finals they achieved a highly
commendable tenth place out of a field of twenty six
teams from around the nation. Their success being all
the more impressive because many of the teams against
which they competed came from senior secondary
colleges.
Congratulations Daniel and Michael!
