EXPO will take place at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church
in Nassau Bay. What a great way to take advantage of
your membership by networking at this event. If you’d

like to get more involved, there is still an opportunity to have a booth for your

business and/or be one of the sponsors for the event. It will be a fun event and I
hope to see you there.
On May 3rd in cooperation with the Bay Area Houston Convention and Visitors
Bureau, we will co-host the 6th Annual State of the Lake Address at the Hilton Houston
NASA Clear Lake. This is a great opportunity to hear from our county commissioners
and the local city mayors about the opportunities and challenges that face our
community, in the coming months. It is an exciting time in our community and this
should be a great learning event.
To kick off the summer season, the Chamber will host the "No Experience
Necessary" Bowling Tournament. This is always a popular event and the lanes book
up early. So, call Shari Sweeney at 281/488-7676 and register your team now!
Our Chamber is successful because of your support. Please take advantage of
the events offered by the Chamber to get exposure for your business or … just have
fun. Happy Summer!
Sincerely,
Chairman of the Board

I have heard, “2010 was my worst year in
business but the first quarter of 2011 is looking better”. That’s good news! The Texas
Comptroller Susan Combs reports that the
state’s sales tax revenue in March 2011 had
an increase of 9.9%, compared to March
2010. This is the twelfth straight month that
sales tax revenue has increased. So far this
calendar year, local sales tax allocations
are up 7.9% compared to the first three
months of 2010.
We can all help our local economy continue to grow by thinking “Shop the Bay

FUN FACT: Pierr was born in Peru and he moved to the states when he was 10 years old.
He grew up in La Porte, and it wasn't long before others learned about Pierr's aspirations
to be a performer. Pierr enjoys live Latin music and has performed with various bands
in the Houston area. This summer, Pierr is embarking on a journey to sharpen his vocal
ability and eventually pursue starting his own band. Pierr's also plans to one day have
his own TV show, Pierr Pressure. Just the title sounds promising, but only time will tell. In
the meantime, you can find Pierr focused on "pressuring his pierrs" to eat more chicken.

I would find myself sitting down with the executives talking about marketing ideas.
I realized marketing was my niche. I began to research franchise opportunities and
that's how my involvement with Chick-fil-A came about. I believe that endearing
businesses become enduring businesses and Chick-fil-A certainly holds true to that
philosophy. This year, I am proud to share one of the best decisions I've made: joining

THE IMPACT OF TOURISM ON THE
GREATER HOUSTON AREA
The General Membership Luncheon was
Wednesday, April 27th at South Shore Harbour
Country Club and was co-sponsored by the Bay
Area Houston Convention & Visitors Bureau. The
Impact of Tourism on the Greater Houston Area,
was presented by Jorge Franz. Franz reviewed
many of the benefits of tourism including lower
taxes and empolyment.
Franz also described the ripple effect tourism
has on our community. In 2009, Houston had 9.4
million visitors who spent $8.9 billion, and generated $369 million in state taxes. In addition, according to Texas Travel Industry Association for every
state tax dollar that is spent to promote tourism in
our area, $7 in state tax dollars are generated by
the visitors that then come to our area.
