Contact us at: [email protected] STAFF: PRCC Volunteers About La Voz: The most recent manifestation of Puerto Rican journalism in Chicago, La Voz del Paseo Boricua proudly continues in the legacy of our community’s previous newspapers. Founded in 2004, La Voz del Paseo Boricua, or simply ‘La Voz’ as dearly called by our readership, is a grassroots bilingual periodical published by the Juan Antonio Corretjer Puerto Rican Cultural Center. On a monthly basis, we report on stories relevant to our community, disseminating news about local events, programs, resources, and developments. As an alternative source of media, we seek to acknowledge the achievements of the Puerto Rican community at large and advocate for the preservation of the heart of our barrio in Humboldt Park - our “pedacito de patria” in Chicago. Alderman Maldonado Introduces Ordinance for Street Vendors On Wednesday, May 28, Alderman Roberto Maldonado introduced an ordinance in City Council, that provides opportunities for Chicagoans to start micro-businesses selling food, under the supervision of the health department. This effort will encourage job creation and innovation by green businesses, enhance the cultural diversity and vibrancy of public spaces, foster entrepreneurs selling healthy, ready-to-eat foods in neighborhoods underserved by groceries and restaurants, ensure the health and safety of consumers, and build Chicago’s reputation as a culinary capital. The ordinance expands the frozen desserts vendor license so that vendors can sell a wide variety of foods from carts and bicycles -- but only if the food is prepared and packaged in a licensed kitchen. The ordinance also makes it easier for produce stands to set up in locations underserved by grocery stores and makes it possible for them to sell pre-sliced fruits and vegetables. Both the Chicago Tribune and the Sun-Times have endorsed the proposal. This ordinance is different than previous proposals. This ordinance would not license vendors to handle or prepare food outdoors. It would require them to consult with the health department and pass inspections before receiving a license. Plus, this ordinance was written in close communication with current and aspiring vendors. It would honor the efforts of vendors to earn an honest living selling traditional foods and encourage innovation by creative entrepreneurs. Speaking on behalf of this new ordinance, Alderman Maldonado stated: “There is a vast underground of food entrepreneurs who have been denied the right to sell their products. Sidewalk and bicycle vendors should have the same opportunity as food trucks and bricks-and-mortar restaurants to sell freshly prepared foods from a licensed kitchen. Not only does this proposal benefit the local economy by supporting entrepreneurial spirit and creativity, but it also benefits neighborhoods that lack access to affordable, healthy foods. I want to encourage this culinary creativity, bring it out of the shadows, and make Chicago street food not only fa- CONDEOLENCES FROM THE PRCC AND NBHRN CONGRATULATIONS JACKIE GONZÁLEZ AND GENIE HERNÁNDEZ! The bill now goes to President Obama for his signature. The following is a partial statement issued by the Congressional Gold Medal Alliance which led the national grass roots effort to bestow this honor. The campaign to raise awareness of the Borinqueneers has been felt in many cities in the Puerto Rican diaspora. In New York, the National Puerto Rican Parade, to be held ion Sunday, June 8, is paying special tribute to the Borinqueneers. In Chicago, the following 2 major developments to memorialize the Borinqueneers have been undertaken: 1) Hispanic Housing and Norwegian American Hospital have partnered to create a housing complex for Latino veterans which will be named the “The Borinqueneers”; 2) the Annual Puerto Rican Parade will be dedicated to the Borinqueneers along with the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the opening of Roberto Clemente Community Academy. “Honoring the only Hispanic segregated active-duty military unit in U.S. History, the 65th Infantry Regiment “Borinqueneers,” with the Congressional Gold Medal took a major leap forward this week when both House Bill (HR 1726) and Senate Bill (S. 1174) both passed their respective chambers. As the Memorial Day weekend looms, the 65th Infantry Regiment known as the “Borinqueneers” achieved two major milestones in achieving the nation’s highest civilian award, the Congressional Gold Medal (CGM). The U.S. Senate bill S. 1174 which authorizes the “Borinqueneers” with the CGM passed today by unanimous vote. On Monday, the House companion bill H.R. 1726, also passed unanimously. These two milestones unfolded about year’s timeframe from when both bills were originally introduced in their respective chambers. The CGM recognition parallels the Presidential Medal of Freedom, is awarded less frequently and is arguably more rigorous due to its stringent legislative requirements. The Borinqueneers CGM legislation is now on its path to the White House for President Obama’s signature. The movement behind this cause primarily originated with a grassroots volunteer group called the “Borinqueneers CGM Alliance” (BCGMA) founded by former Army Captain and Iraq War veteran, Frank Medina and sponsored by the You Are Strong! (YAS!) Center for Veterans Health and Human Services. Frank recounts, “It’s amazing how the collective and cumulative efforts from devoted individuals and organizations around the country culminated in this landmark achievement. The 65th CGM cause transcended all races, ethnici- ties, nationalities in unifying for a noble and righteous cause. Volunteers encompassed Anglos, African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Native-Americans, Colombians and various others...This could not have happened without their aggressive ‘boots on ground’ support...” Medina also adds, “I want to express my deepest appreciation to our Congressional sponsors, Rep. Pierluisi, Rep. Posey, and Sen. Blumenthal along with their superb staffers. They tackled and shouldered the lion’s share of this endeavor and I it was very fortuitous that our joint efforts were complimentary. Without their tenacity, this could not have been possible...” Awarding the CGM to the Borinqueneers will sit alongside other segregated military units that have rightfully received the Congressional Gold Medal including the Tuskegee Airmen, Navajo Code Talkers and many other Native American tribes, Nisei Soldiers, and Montford Point Marines.” The history of the 65th Infantry goes back to 1899 after the US invasion of Puerto Rico and the ceding by Spain of the island following the Spanish American War. The unit participated in WW I, II and most notably, the Korean War. A remnant battalion from the 65th Infantry still resides in the Puerto Rican National Guard. At the onset of the Korean War, the 65th Infantry dubbed themselves the anglicized nickname “Borinqueneers” after the island of Puerto Rico’s indigenous name “Borinquen” meaning “Land of the Noble People”.¬ JUNIO 2014 Hundreds Gather to Re-open Rebaño After Devastating Fire Hundreds of Rebaño members and friends including prominent civic, religious and political leaders such as Ald Danny Solis, 25th Ward, Cook County Commissioner Elect Luis Arroyo Jr and State Rep Luis Arroyo Sr came together to celebrate the reopening of Rebano Church at 2435 W. Division. Nearly 6 months ago, the sanctuary section of the Rebano Church was nearly destroyed as a result of a fire. During a moving and highly motivating opening ceremony, both Pastors Freddie and Lynette Santiago recounted the story of the horrific fire and how it helped to energize and unify the church. And through that effort, forged a vision that culminated in a totally renovated building with state of the art technology as well as accommodations. Representative of the governors and mayors office, as well as community and faith based leaders. were cognized. Lynette’s parents gave inspiring messages to their original flock as well as the new members who are now guided by the leadership of Pastors Freddie and Lynette. The re-opening of Rebano marks a major step in that Churches continued counted commitment to the community. “The welcoming and aesthetically pleasing facilities will provide added spaces for Rebano to carry forth a more effective, community framed ministry” José E. López, Executive Director of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, in referencing this opening stated. ¡Unete al Desfile del Pueblo Puertorriqueño! ¡Sáb. 14 de junio 2014, esq. He reminded them that any expression of diversity on campus was the result of significant struggles and not the gift of the institution. PRCC HOSTS CHARLA WITH CUBAN JOURNALIST AND ACTIVIST GISELA ARANDIA On Tuesday, May 20, over fifty PRCC staff members met at La Bruquena for a very special lunch with Cuban journalist, social activist and researcher Gisela Arandia Covarrubias. Ms. Arandia, who was here to speak at the LASA 32nd Congress, spoke about one of the many myths that prevail in our society: Hispanics are not racist. Sadly, Afro descendants still face discrimination even within the Hispanic community. There is a lack of representation in the media and the little there is perpetuates negative stereotypes that portray them as inferior or insignificant. This makes us feel ashamed of our identity and ancestry. She encouraged all communities to strengthen their identity by creating alternative audiovisual discourses and community activism that present Hispanics accurately, in all their diversity and glory. We have the power to achieve this change! EL RESCATE MAKES ITS VOICE HEARD IN SPRINGFIELD On Wednesday, May 2, 2014, fourteen residents and staff from El Rescate joined the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless along with other organization to Springfield, IL for housing advocacy day. With the joyful rhythm of cuembe corrido, AfriCaribe Performing Ensemble directed by Tito Rodríguez closed their very first performance in almost 15 years in the town of Yabucoa, Puerto Rico. AfriCaribe pperformed as the culminating act for Plena Pa’ La Calle celebrated every year in Yabucoa, left outstanding impressions among the audience that cherished each minute of the hour long presentation of different rhythms of bomba and original songs created over the years. Some of these impressions included the ladies bomba portion, leaded in the primo drum by Jessica Rodríguez and followed by an all female ensemble that drummed and sang while their male peers danced. This beautiful journey honors the presence of women in bomba not just as dancers but as musicians and particularly as bomba drummers which has been historically dominated by men. Another instance to remember was the interpretation of Angel Luis Torruellas known as the “King of Plena” with the group were an original song composed for AfriCaribe by Torruellas was premiered for the event. AfriCaribe repertoire concluded with the song “La Bandera mas grande” composed by Ramon López and vocalized by Alicia Marrero who started performing with the ensemble at the age of 13, now in her twenties recalls with many emotions the journey of many Puerto Ricans living in exile and particularly in Chicago and how that collective sense of pride, struggle and hard work has been monumentalized through the existence of the flags of Paseo Boricua. The group finalized their presentation in Puerto Rico with seis corrido which is a prominent bomba rhythm from the town of Loiza. This rooted celebration leaded by Raul Ayala, Jerry Ferrao and also vocalized by Elliud Martinez and Jose Emmanuelli-Nater was joined by the beautiful audience that welcomed AfriCaribe to Yabucoa and Puerto Rico. The group feels immensely grateful of all the support received during this remarkable trip particularly back home in Paseo Boricua. No doubt that in Chicago we have bomba, cultura and amor that is our own and now a piece of Puerto Rico living in our hearts. AfriCaribe for the past 12 years hosts a Bombazo at the end of the month and also offers classes of dancing, drumming and singing for all ages. This year, students worked with 53 seniors at RCCA to navigate their college admissions process for UIC, Northeastern and Columbia College. The following students have already been accepted and they will collectively receive more than $500,000 in scholarships and grants: Alyssa Villegas This year of the College Pipeline has been an amazing experience. I have developed amazing and loving relationships with all of the students in the pipeline. Every moment that I spent at Clemente working with my students was rewarding for myself and the students. During the year of the pipeline, I have been blown away by the honesty of the young people we worked with. They were all so in tune with their emotions and sensed genuineness. Seeing how easily students trusted the mentors and were collaborative with the mentors speaks to how genuine our program is. Our mentors worked with students against all odds to ensure they not only graduated from high school but were enrolled into our universities. Seeing my fellow mentors working with our students has been an inspiring and refreshing experience. I am so thankful to our students for letting me become a part of their lives during such an important part of their lives. Maria de los Angeles Borrero “Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person. Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies”. In this wonderful quote by Mother Theresa, leadership becomes a necessity rather than a quality or talent earned throughout time. I firmly believe we are all capable of becoming leaders, but also in our way to leadership grow and adapt many talents from the people who support us in our day to day lives. My experience at Clemente can be summarized with the word ever-growing. I started working as the College Pipeline Program in October of 2013. As I met many of my students and I heard their life stories it became evident that there was a need to succeed Rebecca Rios This year I had the privilege to work with 16 amazing students at Roberto Clemente Community Academy and reflecting on that time is so important. It was my first year working with high school students and it just reinforced my passion for working with young people. There is no job out there that I would rather do than to help young people understand how powerful they are. My main focus this year was to help students understand that they are much more than an ACT score and a GPA. These numbers are attached to them like their name and it becomes very overwhelming for students. I believe, as Einstein once stated that “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” This year, and these students, also reinforced my beliefs. They inspired me, taught me, and helped me grow as a person in many ways; they don’t even know how much. I just want to say thank you to Ambreia Harris, Angel Davila, Joey Ortiz, Alina Santana, Desiree Martinez, James Dodson, Urayoan Perez, Gina Vega, Sophia Uribe, Charlie Bass, Kevin Camacho, Kevin Ayala, Arsenio Arrington, Gerardo Ocampo, Edwin Morales, and Elcurtis Singleton for being my first students in this program. I appreciate all of your work and your inspiration. I can’t wait to see what these young people will do in their future, but I know it will be great. I am very grateful to be a part of a program like the Pipeline, that gives me the opportunity to advocate for students and help them to navigate high school and college. and persevere. Their desire to learn and motivation to attend classes regardless of their personal obstacles and family issues truly inspired me to share my story as well. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, so I didn’t attend high school in Chicago, despite all this differences I was able to relate to my students in many ways. When students learned about my challenges they were able to see hope and motivation in their own particular career choices. They share their successes and admission letters with me as well as their challenges and personal stories. I was witness of their academic and personal transformation and their engagement in Clemente’s school work. Despite my current research in Latinos and their access of higher education, many statistics show a large percentage of Black and Latino students being derailed out of the educational pipeline, but my students were able to challenge them and prove CONTINUES PG. 10 CLEMENTE STUDENTS ACCEPTED THROUGH PIPELINE PROJECT TO THE FOLLOWING UNIVERSITIES NEIU Ambreia Harris Angel Davila Elcurtis Singleton Arsenio Arrington Gerardo Ocampo Joey Ortiz Alina Santana Urayoan Perez Gina Vega Giovanie Casillas Jasmin Bonano Alexandria Sada McKayla Reynolds Alexis Saterfield Jessica Rivera Briana Webb Dejah Cunningham Marisol Ortiz Aliyaha Frierson Julie Alvarez Luis Susana Jovani Salgado Julian Guerrero Columbia Destiny Ares Elena Reyes Shavonne Matthews Brandon Gonzalez Beatris Osorio Argenis Hernandez Alexis Burgos Sormaris Burgos Jakoby Lopez UIC Amanda Marciano Alexandra Villalpando Daniel Rivera Giovanni Islas Jasmine González Israel Torres Felipe Crespo Leila Diawara Miguel Luz Jessica Robinson ¡Unete al Desfile del Pueblo Puertorriqueño! ¡Sáb. 14 de junio 2014, esq. Beginning in January, undergraduate Public Health students from UIC introduced high school students to basic public health concepts through 13 weekly class sessions. Students learned that public health includes a wide range of topics that impact their everyday wellbeing, such as nutrition, disease, violence, and the environment. They also explored how topics like epidemiology and health promotion could be used to address health concerns in their community. To put their new knowledge in to action, high school students identified relevant public health topics in their school and worked with the UIC students to create a survey for their peers. On Friday, they stood together to present their findings. Their research uncovered many strengths within their school. For example, most students at Clemente are getting adequate physical activity and enjoy their PE classes; they also felt comfortable discussing safe sex practices. Students also had the opportunity to make recommendations, based on the survey results, to their peers and school administrators present at the event. Suggestions included more education about the health impacts of fast food, a class or group that addresses teen dating violence, and a Public Health club where students could continue applying their new knowledge and explore ca- reers in Public Health. UIC students thanked participating high school students and several emphasized they felt they had learned even more from the community than they had taught their younger co-researchers. They were accompanied by their instructor, Rachael Dombrowski, Doctors Michele Kelley and Ebbin Dotson, and dean of the UIC School of Public Health Dr. Paul Brandt-Rauf. At the culmination of the student presentations, PRCC Executive Director José E. López spoke to the students about the importance of public health and their potential to apply their education for the benefit of their community. His remarks were followed by Dr. Dotson´s invitation to students to consider a degree in Public Health at UIC where, he assured, they would be welcomed and supported. One of the requirements for IB is to engage students in community through Service Learning Hours, which is also a part of the vision of Community as a Campus. The Puerto Rican Cultural Center (PRCC) - Vida/ SIDA program was selected as one of the participating programs for youth volunteer opportunities. Subsequently, Vida/ SIDA’s Manager of Linkage to Care & Treatment, Ricardo Jimenez and former Manager of Comprehensive Risk Counseling Services (CRCS), Alex Frye worked with thirty of Clemente H.S.’ freshman year students. They taught them about HIV and Sexual Transmitted Infections (STI), toured Vida/SIDA and the services available on sexual health. After the tours, they went to the PRCC’s youth space Café Teatro Batey Urbano for a reflection of their experiences, to pack condoms for outreach workers, and discussed the upcoming 2nd United Puerto Rican People’s Parade, which is partly dedicated to Clemente H.S.40th Anniversary. This was done in order for our community youth to have a richer understanding of the history, successes, and the legacy of their school and Humboldt Park; and to strengthen the relationships between our diverse youth-centered resources. This over 20-year-old city tradition aims to have community groups join in a “spring cleaning” of Chicago. Now that the snow has melted and spring is finally here, having a clean environment is an important part of being able to be outside and enjoy the wonderful neighborhood of Humboldt Park. The interactions with students within the pipeline, inner forces, have positively effected the mentors is unanimously felt. However the effects of the outer forces are not felt as much during the school year. So as the 2013-2014 school year comes to an end, it is important to reflect on both forces and understand the importance of these elements. Looking back on how each of the mentors were able to navigate diverse waters, it astounds me how smoothly it happened. Part of the mentors job is to build a relationship with the admissions office of our respected institutions to make the application process go well for our students, while at the same time using them as a resource to help our students who are having difficulty submitting information. All parties from each university have been happy to help, and have gone beyond the call of duty. Come to think of it, the many meetings and interactions we had with the admissions office or the administration have all gone smoothly. Why? Because they see that we are willing to do anything for our students. That we care about the students wants, needs, dreams and state of being. People outside of this program see the love that the mentors have for their students and vice versa. The 26th ward provided tools - rakes, brooms, shovels, and bags - and Clemente students cleaned up five large bags of litter along Division Street and in Humboldt Park. Students brought their enthusiasm and a hard-work attitude and together, alongside other community groups, cleaned up the area so everyone can better enjoy the beauty of the neighborhood and Humboldt Park! ¡Unete al Desfile del Pueblo Puertorriqueño! ¡Sáb. 14 de junio 2014, esq. During the 20072008 school year, Clemente High School was one of the 16 schools nationwide to be selected by the College Board for inclusion in the EXCELerator School Improvement Model program, a project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The School is an International Baccalaureate candidate school; it offers six Advanced Placement classes and facilitates dual enrollment opportunities so that students can earn college credits. Clemente also has vocational education programs that focus on culinary arts and radio/television broadcasting. The latter program is taught by a journalist from Chicago’s WGN-AM radio station. In 2012, 92.6% of Clemente freshmen were classified as on-track to graduate and is now a Level 2 school. It is a great honor and a very humbling experience for me. Thirty three years ago today i started facing the great challenge of imprisonment. When i arrived in prison i expected to spend no more than the same amount of years other Puerto Rican political prisoners had spent. Don Oscar Collazo López had spent the most—29 years in federal prison when i was arrested. Unfortunately, i have surpassed him by 4 years. Thus far, i have been able to face the challenge with dignity and honor, and stay strong, both spiritually and mentally. And, in spite of all the dehumanizing and toxic experiences i’ve had to face, i can aver that there is no hatred or fear in my heart and that i can still fill it with love and compassion every day. i chose to serve the most just and noble cause any Puerto Rican can serve. Every day i affirm my Puerto Rican identity and do it to confirm that i can’t be anything else but a boricua. Thirty three years ago i said in a federal courtroom that Puerto Rico would be an independent and sovereign nation, and i continue believing the same to be true. Ours is a struggle that has lasted centuries and has survived every attack waged by two imperialist powers in their quest to destroy it. It has survived because the courageous women and men who initiated it did it as an act of love and every generation that has succeeded them have done it for the same reason. For me it was a seed that was sown with lots of love, therefore it will of be fruitful and perennial. Puerto Rico is my homeland and i love it and my people. But not only do i believe that ours will be an independent and sovereign nation but that we have the potential of transforming it into an edenic garden for the enjoyment of our people and the rest of the world. We can do it because we are a creative people and because we have the human resources that are capable of doing it. All we need to do is to dare to struggle and to dare to win. i wish you great success with the celebration of this year’s Parade and with all the endeavors you have undertaken.
