“A private aircraft is a home

fly our aircraft owners, charter

of the same importance.
All of us at Exklusiv Aviation

FRANC VILA’S now characteristic esprit unique watchcase design epitomizes the brand’s philosophy. Classic yet contemporary,
sporty yet elegant, these seemingly contradictory attributes are the essence of the brand’s success and can currently be considered the hallmark
properties of it’s design. After almost seven years since it first exploded into the luxury market, the brand maintains it’s strong philosophy
of reinforcing the future of watch-making through respect of it’s traditions and the understanding and use of new technology
with innovative thinking. It’s commitment to introduce contemporary timepieces destined to become tomorrow’s classics, is still the
driving force of the brand. The Geneva-based firm specializes in ultra-limited series and unique pieces, guaranteeing timepieces
of the highest quality that are above all, truly exclusive.

exceptional watchmaking
by THIERRY BRANDT - WATCH ELSE
MANUFACTURE ROYALE
INVESTS
IN VOLTAIRE’S CASTLE
Once upon a time there was
an industrial provider of watch
pieces : Arnaud Favre, head of
Tec-Ebauches SA in Vallorbe
(Switzerland), who had decided
to create a crazy timepiece,
outside of classical production
standards. One day, he meets a
designer, or more like a sculptor,
a creator of objects, Charles
Grosbéty. Add Michel Navas and
Enrico Barbasini to the pair of
accomplices, the master watchmakers from the Fabrique du
Temps, who studied movement
for three years, and at the end
of the end, you get Opéra, an
amazing whirlpool of minutes.
The first work of Manufacture
Royale.
Opéra Of course, this article is
addressed to passionate people
who are crazy enough to spend
more than a million swiss francs
in order to obtain an almost
exclusive object. Furthermore,
so as to answer the demand of
the retailers, the production of a
series of fifteen more affordable
pieces has been launched.
More than a watch, Opéra is
a work of art conceived with
the aim of emphasizing the
sound of the minute repeater.
This is where Charles Grosbéty’s
creative fever intervenes. He
has conceived an extraordinary
item that unites gray and pink
gold. Once displayed, this object
makes one think of the architecture in the Sydney Opera,
thus offering an ideal sound
environment.
Spirit “With Manufacture
Royale, I wanted to go to the end
of my watchmaker’s dream and
create on of the most beautiful
brands there is. I had some money available and most of all, an
inextinguishible motivation and
passion. It was out of the question to count”, resumes Arnaud
Favre, currently happy to be able
to share his enthusiasm and
thrilled to have the possibility
of installing the headquarters of
his new company on the border
between France and Switzerland,
in Ferney, in the castle where
Voltaire himself created a watch
manfacture in 1758.
Will the spirit of the famous
man, who was at the same time
a writer, an entrepreneur and
a businessman, bring success
to the budding Manufacture
Royale? Arnaud Favre believes
so. He now wants to proceed
to the next step and is already
imagining future projects for
new calibers.
The young ultraexclusive brand has
decided to establish
its headquarters
in the home of the
impressive man.
A beautiful jewel
that befits the company’s ambitions.
Particular signs
Total number of pieces: 12
Public price: 1.2 million swiss francs
for the models signed by the
creator, 345’700 swiss francs
for the series of 15 pieces
The watch has a life guarantee on it.
Each piece is delivered with a second
movement and a layout deposited
at a notary’s office. In case there is a
problem, if for example the company
goes bankrupt, the movement can be
completely recomposed.

PRINCE
HARRY
‘‘
Son of Prince Charles and the late Diana Princess of Wales,
Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales - Harry to his
friends – is one of the the most symbolic figures of the
House of Windsor alongside his brother Prince William,
whose wedding has featured on the front page of the
tabloids since its announcement in 2010. Now 26 years old,
8
magazine
Looking back on it now and at the time as well,
Harry is 3rd in line to the throne behind his father Charles
and brother William. He is still affected by the premature
death of his mother in a road accident in Paris in 1997,
when he was 12. In a 2007 interview with ABC, he said
“You know when people think about it, they think about
her death. They think about, you know, how wrong it was.
They think, whatever happened? I don’t know, for me
personally, what happened, you know, that night, whatever
happened in that tunnel - no one will ever know. And I’m
sure people will always think about it the whole time. I’ll
never stop wondering about that.”
An outstanding patriot Although the death of his
mother was a great shock, Price Harry hasn’t forgotten the responsibilities that come with his rank. After
first-class officer training at the Royal Military Academy
Sandhurst, Harry didn’t hesitate to join the British troops
leaving for Afghanistan in 2005. He is vehement: “The last
thing I said was there’s no way I’m going to put myself
through Sandhurst and then sit on my arse back home
while my boys are out fighting for their country. That may
sound very patriotic, but it’s true. It’s not the way anyone
should really work”. In 2007 he volunteered to serve in
Iraq, arguing that when working as an officer he felt as if
he was living a normal life.
Youthful excess He has always wanted a normal life,
attending parties and visiting nightclubs frequently. The
press has faithfully reported every indiscretion, from
arguments with paparazzi and sometimes racist remarks
to the Nazi costume with swastika he wore to a fancy-dress
ball. At the time of his 21st birthday he apologised for this
blunder, admitting his choice of a Nazi uniform was «a
very stupid thing to do» and saying that he had learnt his
lesson.
Despite, or possibly because of, his rebellious behaviour,
Price Harry remains a very eligible bachelor.
LAPO
ELKHAN
It’s impossible to list the world’s richest and most
eligible single people without including Lapo Elkann.
Grandson of Gianni “l’avvocato” Agnelli, co-owner
and chairman of Fiat, Lapo is heir to a robust financial
empire. Five-times winner of the title of World’s Best
Dressed and Sexiest Man in the pages of Vanity Fair, he
has nothing to fear from competition with European
royalty.
Youthful rebellion Now 33, Lapo has left his jetsetting past behind him to concentrate on his many professional projects rather than parties. But he has fond
memories of his fast-living past, as the numerous tattoos
on his arms bear witness. These include an homage to
Turin’s Juventus football team, the team of choice of the
Agnelli family, and a Chinese symbol meaning “I never
give up”. A speed fan and frequent visitor to Formula 1
pitstops, he only slowed down after an overdose in 2005.
He may be more disciplined today, but he still has a
non-conformist air, in his clothes as well as his manner.
On 16th June 2007 he admitted to French newspaper Liberation “I’m called Lapo Elkann, but I’ve always tried to
emphasise the “Lapo”. It’s nice to have a good surname
and roots, but if you don’t create your own identity,
you’ll always be seen as somebody’s son, or grandson…
The danger is to let yourself be taken where others
want you to go. In the past I’ve not set my own direction

that’s the most
dangerous thing
you can do”.

projects: in 2003
he established
two companies
in Italy, Independent Ideas,
an independent
branding and
communications
agency, and Italia
Independent, a fashion company. More recently he has
created a jewellery collection for Van Dinh: now all he has
to do is to find the woman to wear the jewels…

Born in Bruges, Belgium, on 17 May 1982, Tony Parker is one of
the best-known French basketball players of his generation. His
fame has come partly from sporting performances which took
him to the NBA draft in 2001, when he joined the top-flight San
Antonio Spurs as a point guard, but mostly from his relationship
with actress Eva Longoria.
The scar left by his divorce from Eva in 2010 hasn’t yet healed,
and so far “TP” remains unattached. It’s a shame nobody wanted to comfort him when he learned that his ex had spent her
birthday in the arms of Eduardo Cruz...
Now 35 years old, the incorrigible Irishman remains an eligible
bachelor. Father of two boys, James and Henry, by two mothers,
Colin is a free man again. Before becoming a film star adored
by women the world over, Farrell went through several difficult
phases. After being kicked out of three different schools and taking a lot of ecstasy, the 17 year old Farrell was sent to Australia
for a year, where he started to make a name as a model. Following roles in several minor TV series, he came to prominence
in Joel Schumacher’s Tigerland, and followed this with a string
of Hollywood blockbusters including The Recruit with his hero
Al Pacino, and the lead role in Terrence Malick’s The New World.

David Jude Law, know to cinema goers simply
as Jude Law, is an artist with a variety of talents.
Known for his movie roles, he also acts in the
theatre and produces and directs films. A Londoner
through and through, he began his stage career
early when his parents, both teachers, encouraged
him to join the National Youth Music Theatre.
From the age of 12, these roles brought him to the
attention of casting directors for British films, and
then Hollywood films including Gattaca (1997) and
The Talented Mr Ripley (1999). Based in Hollywood
now, he still returns to the theatre regularly. Be
warned, though: getting close to this 38 year old
means dealing with his four children from past
relationships!

Daniel Radcliffe
bachelors by TATIANA MORENO
Love him or hate him, you can’t ignore Daniel Radcliffe. After starting his career as Harry Potter in the
film series, Daniel is now an international star, and
has come a long way since his first appearance as
the short-sighted boy wizard. 22 this year, Radcliffe
earned $64 million between 2009 and 2010, no small
sum for a young actor. If he’s worried about being
typecast, he’s been successful in overcoming it. His
2007 performance in Peter Schaffer’s Equus, which
attracted public attention mostly because the final
scene is played entirely nude, received very positive
critical reviews.
Life begins at

If you dream of
marrying a rich,
famous sportsman,
Cristiano Ronaldo
is the man for you.
Unquestionably one
of the most fluid and
talented footballers
of his generation, the
playboy genius is
also one of the most
handsome. He was
very young when
his prodigious talent
was first spotted:
from the age of 10 his
mesmerising dribbles
began to attract the
success which led
to him signing for
Manchester United
in 2003. As a member
of the Real Madrid
team now, the world’s
fastest footballer (top speed of 21 mph) earns nearly €13 million
a year, which Real Madrid are happy to pay on top of the world
record transfer fee of €94 million it cost to lure him to Spain. The
lucky lady who can catch Ronaldo will have to move pretty fast
herself.
Amadeo

Amadeo Marcus d’Aviano,
is the
oldest son
of Princess
Astrid of
Belgium
and Lorenz,
Archduke
of AustriaEste, and
the oldest
grand-child
of the king
and queen of
Belgium. He
will probably
never become king, as he is 6th in line of succession
to the throne, behind his uncle Prince Philippe, his
cousins, and his mother Astrid. Nonetheless the future
looks bright for the 25 year old: having completed his
International Baccalaureat in 2004, he trained at the
Royal Military Academy in Brussels, graduating as a
Junior Officer. He then studied at the London School
of Economics & Political Science, and since September
2009 has been working in the audit section of the New

with the release of I bet you look good on the dancefloor.
A few months later, their compilation Whatever people
say I am, that’s what I’m not became the fastest-selling
debut album of all time in the UK, and the Arctic Monkeys
overtook legendary groups such as Oasis and Blur. Three
successful albums followed, with Favourite Worst Nightmare in 2007, Humbug in 2009 and Suck It and See, which

COLDPLAY
“I can’t dance like Usher. I can’t sing like Beyoncé. I can’t
write songs like Elton John”, admits Chris Martin, vocalist with Coldplay. “We rely more on enthusiasm than
actual skill.” This claim doesn’t reflect on the quality of
their music. Melodic yet melancholic, sad, and yet full of
MONKEYS
“We never made those demos to make money or anything”
insist the Arctic Monkeys. “We were giving them away free
anyway - that was a better way for people to hear them.
And it made the gigs better, because people knew the
words and came and sang along”. This approach certainly
worked for them: after the group formed in 2002, Arctic
Monkeys achieved international fame through the web.
Vocalist Alex Turner, guitarist Jamie Cook, bassist Andy Nicholson and drummer Matt Helders aren’t about to forget
this support either.
Internet phenomenon Arctic Monkeys are a group
in tune with their times. All 25 years old, the quartet have
grown up with the internet. Their adventure began on
Christmas 2001, when Alex and Jamie both asked for guitars for Christmas, and got their wish. In 2003 they started
ARCTIC
hope, Coldplay’s songs have had a profound influence on
music lovers over the past 10 years. With the imminent
release of their fifth album, it’s time to remind ourselves
why the group has received so much critical and popular
acclaim.
From uni to the music scene The quartet began to
take shape at University College London in September
1996. During the first week of classes, Chris Martin met the
group’s guitarist, Johnny Buckland. Before the year was
out they had been joined by bassist Guy Berrymand and
drummer Will Champion. For three years the group played
concerts in small provincial clubs, accompanied by their
manager Phil Harvey, and in 1999, shortly before graduation, they hit the big time by signing with Parlaphone. The
record label instantly hired them for five albums, and the
hits followed. The albums Parachutes (2000), A Rush of
Blood to the Head (2002), X&Y (2005), and Viva la Vida or
Death and All His Friends (2008) sold millions.
No drugs The durability of the group is possibly a result
of their philospohy of healthy living. Far from the sex,
drugs and rock’n’roll clichés of rock, the members of Coldplay lead a stable life. Inspired by groups like U2 and REM,
Chris, Johnny, Guy and Will, the band members, made
a pact at the very beginning: anyone who takes drugs is
out of the band. A professional attitude which has paid
dividends many times over. SZ

I can’t dance like Usher. I can’t sing like Beyoncé.
While some groups wait a lifetime before making the slightest
breakthrough, others experience immediate success. The Kooks,
an indie rock band composed entirely of lads aged under 25, are
one of the lucky ones. „It was really quick how it all happened“,
explains Luke Pritchard, lead singer of The Kooks. „We did a demo
with a mate of ours in London, which we sent off to one guy to
get some gigs, and he turned out to be a manager. He rung us up
and it kind of went from there.“ „There“ was 2006. And it has been
going ever since. After the success of their debut album, Inside
in/ Inside out, the group members instantly composed a hitlist CD
called Konk (2008). A new album is expected in the shops any day
now. The perfect publicity before Luke, Hugh, Peter and Chris set
off on their European music tour in May. SZ
England produces pop groups as often as Swatch
unveils new watches. The Kaiser Chiefs are living
up to the tradition, and, even better, adding a dose
of football to the mix. The five friends from Leeds
chose their name in homage to a South African
team captained by a player from their home town.
Just like a football match, their music can best be
enjoyed with a beer, in the pub or live on stage.
Happily, they’re touring their new album now,
though there’s no doubt their greatest hits, like
„Ruby“ or „I Predict a Riot“, will get an outing. You
don’t change a winning formula. SP
Those lucky enough to have seen them in concert remember
it vividly: the Bristol group and trip hop pioneers create an
intense and propulsive experience. Portishead guitarist Geoff
Barrow’s collaboration with Massive Attack comes as no
surprise: embrace it! Portishead are touring their new album
this summer, only their 4th. Dummy set the standard for trip
hop albums, Portishead followed, and 10 years later Third was
released in 2008. The solo projects from trip hop sorceress
Beth Gibbons have kept the impatient fans at bay, but the wait
should soon be over: just soon enough for many! SP

MUMFORD&SONS
PORTISHEAD
Who better than Marcus Mumford to describe
the group’s music: „We write about real things,
and we sing and play with more passion because
feel it.“ The group’s leader adds, „We like honest
music“. The directness of the London quartet’s
music tugs at the heartstrings: a folk sound, but
not old-fashioned; a country influence, but not
bland … Build up the energy and sound levels,
and you’ve got a classic irish pop sound. Add a
surprisingly gravelly vocal from the 25 year old
vocalist, and you have the right mix for any time
of day, or night. Our recommendation; start with
the hits Little Lion Man and Sigh No More. SP
QUEENS OF THE STONE
„Starting a revolution against shitty rock“ announces the website of the Queens of the Stone
Age. Straight talking, all the way down the line
music: virile, honest and direct, the music of Josh
Homme and Nick Oliveri burns with the pure flame
of rock. The heart of QOTSA, the two have worked
with the cream of musicians since they started out
in 1997: Dave Grohl from Nirvana and Foo Fighters,
Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees… In 2001 they
exploded with the album Songs for the Deaf, which
produced the hits No One Knows and Go with the
Flow. For the re-release of their first album, they’re
hitting the road. Let’s hope the two main men don’t
fall out first; they have a reputation as hard-nosed
brawlers. Just like their music. SP
Pure voice, sophisticated ethereal arrangements: The Do
in a nutshell. The Franco-Finnish group of Dan Levy and
Olivia Bouyssou Merilahti met in 2004 while recording the
film soundtrack for Empire of the Wolves. She comes from
a pop and electro background, he is more a jazzman. Their
first single On My Shoulders created a buzz on MySpace after
being chosen as the music for an advertisement. Their first
album, A Mouthful, was a brilliant and lively mix of Olivia’s exquisite voice and Dan’s compelling pop. An addictive album,
it works as well in the bath as it does on the dance floor.
They pulled off the tricky second album with aplomb: far
from being a carbon copy of the first album, Both Ways Open
Jaws is much more of a psychedelic electro treat. Different
albums, equally charming. SP
THE STROKES
Just because you come from a wealthy background doesn’t
mean you can’t rock. The proof? The Strokes, five New Yorkers
whose lead singer, Julian Casablancas, is the son of the founder
of Elite model agency. Given his good looks, Julian could
probably have gone to work for dad. Instead, he met his mates
at the exclusive Rosey College in Switzerland and they decided
to form a band, much to the delight of critics, who welcomed
the return of garage rock in 2001. They paved the way for most

The prestigious Gault & Millau guide has crowned Edouard

has worked in the Lubéron for 20 years, has certainly
made his mark. His work on the primary flavours of

Adrià
Ferran Adrià’s restaurant El Bulli is in Rosas, 100 miles
from Barcelona in the heart of the Cabo de Creus National
Park, in the province of Girona. With 3 MIchelin stars, the
food press consistently rates it best restaurant on the
planet. And for the 4th year in a row, Britain’s Restaurant
magazine has crowned it “The World’s Best Restaurant”.
An author as well The genius of the Costa Brava
has published A Day at El Bulli: An insight into the ideas,
methods and creativity of Ferran Adrià, written with Juli
Soler and Albert Adrià. In its 528 pages we learn that there
are more than 2 million requests for 8000 places each year,
and that El Bulli was named “The World’s Best Restaurant”
by Restaurant Magazine in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The book
has been translated into several languages, and has sold
well in Australia, France, Germany and the USA.
Molecular? This culinary icon concocts extraordinary,
provocative dishes, including caviar and cocoa, strawberries and buffalo milk, beetroot and yoghurt jelly, rabbit
brains and sea anemones. His cuisine is often called molecular, but he considers this description meaningless: “This
expression was used for the first time in 2004 by some of
my peers and the press to define the influence of science
on my cooking. Clearly, this influence exists, but it’s just
one small part of my approach. I incorporate lots of other
influences, from design and architecture to calligraphy and
sign language, to create the presentation of my dishes”.
Foams and oyster leaves Ferran Adrià adds:
“Today everyone thinks my restaurant is like a laboratory
full of test tubes, microscopes and syringes… I can’t escape this reputation for emulsions, mousses and foams,
but I haven’t used any of these techniques for years!
On the contrary, I’m more inspired now by Japanese
techniques, which incline me to make food with feeling,

kitchen armfuls of summer spinach, wild broccoli, cotton
lavender, and other romantically-named herbs that mere
mortals have never heard of. These are the ingredients
from which he fashions his astonishing creations.
Laurels The chef from the Lubéron has held 2 Michelin
stars for 10 years, and a 4 toque rating from Gault & Millau.
The food press says “this is one chef who prefers using
laurels in his cooking to winning them!”. Edward Loubet
is a paradox: he loves simple flavours, but his cuisine is
very sophisticated. He enjoys using forgotten vegetables
and wild herbs, which he grows in his 3 hectare garden at
Domaine de Capelongue at Bonnieux in the Lubéron.
A flavour explosion The Savoyard claims to be invested in the tradition of sauced dishes, game, and the classic
culinary lexicon. His genius, however, lies elsewhere. He
has a very personal way of bringing the essence of nature
to a dish: “Texture is a taste, it can be soft, solid, liquid or
crisp”, he likes to point out. “Flavours are essential; every
ingredient has one or more aromatic complements. For
example, sea bass and sage aren’t a great combination
by chance. Bass has a strong taste of iodine from the sea,
and sage is earthy. That’s what links them. The aromatic
improves the fish, brings it to life”.
Edouard Loubet uses these relationships to make flavours
explode on the palate, adding acidity and bitterness to
create mouthwatering and ultimately irresistible combinations.

His cooking knows no boundaries and conforms

Joël Robuchon
Joël Robuchon is one of the greatest French chefs, and also one
of the most media-savvy. He holds more Michelin stars than any
other chef, even Alain Ducasse, and was Gault et Millau’s “Chef
of the Century”. His first restaurant in Paris was declared Best
Restaurant in the World by the International Herald Tribune

restaurants in Paris, both two-time holders of 2 Michelin stars,
and others in Monaco, Tokyo, Macao, New York, London and
Hong Kong. In 2008, he held a total of 18 Michelin stars. He also
presents television programmes and develops recipes for food

rooted in quality ingredients. “When I eat duck,” he proclaims,

Pierre Gagnaire learned his trade with Paul Bocuse.
He won his first Michelin star at Saint-Etienne in

creative, sometimes provocative, and turns humble
ingredients such as turnips, offal and skate into
spectacular successes. He is a devotee of molecular
gastronomy, and his meals are often presented as
an artfully-arranged constellation of main and side
dishes. He is a member of the Académie Culinaire de
France, and in 2006 published his book “La Cuisine
c’est de l’amour, de l’art, de la technique”, followed
by “Lucide et Ludique”, distilling his 40 years of
culinary experience.
Gordon Ramsey
Born in Scotland, Gordon Ramsey has a reputation
as a culinary perfectionist. He learned to cook with
Joël Robuchon in Paris, and worked as chef on a
yacht in the islands of Bermuda. Returning to the
UK in 1993, he earned his first Michelin star in London, followed by 3 stars in 2001 and a succession
of restaurant openings in London, Dubai, Tokyo,
New York and France. He holds a total of 10 Michelin stars, and is one of only 3 chefs to be awarded

Guillaume Musso started to write when he was a student.
Fascinated by the United States, at the age of 19 he spent
several months in New York. Working as an ice cream
seller, he met the cosmopolitan residents of New York,
and returned with numerous ideas for mystery stories. In
2001 he published his first novel, Skidamarink, in which
he tackled economic and social issues. Encouraged by
the public, he started writing supernatural detective
stories. With sales of 1,385,000 in 2009, he is the second
highest-selling French novelist. His books are translated
into 34 languages, and total sales of his books are in
excess of 10 million copies. His modern prose and cinematic atmosphere attract film directors, and his biggest
seller, Afterwards, has been translated into 30 languages
and became a film in 2009.
Too much imagination In the press, Guillaume Musso
claims to have too much imagination : «I’m sometimes so
absorbed by my characters that my imaginary life takes
over my real life!» His novels have a long gestation: the
premise of his next to last novel, Girl on Paper, comes from
a Woody Allen film from 1985, The Purple Rose of Cairo,
in which a film actor steps out of the screen to brighten
up the life of a waitress. Musso is clearly fascinated by
the new dimension created between the imagination and
real life : «My mother is a librarian, and made me read
the classics as well as books by the likes of Stephen King
or Agatha Christie, and that made me very sensitive to
atmosphere».

journalist focus on the indifference of unsatisfactory
relationships. A choice of topic no doubt infuenced by his
personal experiences: a young boy when his parents divorced, Hornby saw his own marriage fail after the birth of an
autistic son in 1992. The same year he published his first
book, Fever Pitch, an autobiography about his devotion to
Arsenal football team.
Five years later, the book became a film starring recent
Oscar-winner Colin Firth. In 1995 Hornby was catapulted
to international stardom with the publication of his first
novel, High Fidelity, the romantic history of an obsessive
disillusioned fortysomething. The book became a Hollywood blockbuster starring John Cusack.
Still famous Nick Hornby’s success has continued to
grow since the publication of his first novel. In addition to
numerous newspaper and magazine articles, he has produced another five bestselling novels. Hornby now lives
with his second wife, producer Amanda Posey, and their
two children, Lowell, 8, and Jesse, 6.
While he seems to have found a stable and loving relationship, his books remain as cynical as ever. The latest,
Juliet, Naked (2009), once again emphasises the amorous
difficulties of adult life. And many readers identify with
that. SZ

Words don’t come very
If ever a writer warranted the description „contemporary“, it’s Michel Houllebecq. Few writers have
captured so precisely the wanderings, doubts and
preoccupations of their generation. His first novel
Whatever describes a society in which his disillusioned hero finds that all aspects of society have
become a battle, from sexuality to everyday human
interactions.
His third book, Platform, brought him fame among
the wider public: his (anti-) hero takes up sex
tourism as a lifestyle. Houllebecq’s declarations on

Edna O’Brien’s writing
conjures up the very
idea of life in Ireland:
passionate, difficult, and
isolated. Just like the
writer herself. Against
the wishes of her

Czech writer while still
young and moved from
Ireland to London. She
freely admits that her
desire to write came
straight from James
Joyce and A Portrait
of the Artist as a Young
Man. Her novels are
banned in Ireland, and
sometimes burned: her
descriptions of her heroines’ sex lives are too crude for prude
Irish society. This society fuels her books, such as Down by
the River, inspired by the true story of a 12 year old girl who
became pregnant after being raped. A large proportion of the
population opposed her going to England for an abortion. But
no matter what she recounts, however dark the story she tells,
her writing is always magnificent. SP

Nordic detective stories have taken the world by

Icelandic author. Long before Stieg Larsson and the

that she has had a relationship for 3 years with a young

facilities in the world. The 9th richest man in the world
(according to Forbes magazine in 2010) can afford to indulge the wishes of «the apple of his eye» on a grand scale.
No privileges While Marta may be lucky enough to
own a giant racecourse, it’s one of the few privileges she’s
received. Her father has been extremely clear on this: he
started from nothing, now owns more than 4000 shops
under the Inditex label (Zara, Zara Home, Pull and Bear,
Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho, Kiddy’s class,
Lefties, and Uterquë), and believes his daughter should
be trained in the firm and learn how the whole business
runs without any special treatment. So Marta started her
training as a shop assistant in a branch of an Inditex shop,
folding shirts and stocking shelves. She spent more than
3 years working in different branches within the group,
including work experience in London, Barcelona and
Shanghai.
Now working in the Inditex head office, Marta has not yet
been assigned to a specific operational area, because of
her youth, but there’s no doubt that her excellent education (she spent part of her schooling in a Jesuit school in
Galicia, then in Switzerland and finally at the European
Business School in London) will help her to take her
place at the head of one of the biggest businesses in the
world.

the beautiful Slovak with the long legs (1 metre 26 cm!)
ranks as one of the most desirable single women. At 39,
she’s still justifiably considered one of the most beautiful
women in the world. With her big blue eyes and the long
blond hair that she refuses to cut because she believes
she’s made her living from it, Adriana can still make
hearts flutter.
Committed Known for her modelling work since her
impact in the Wonderbra advert with the famous slogan
«look me in the eyes …», and for numerous women’s
magazine covers wearing clothes by the most famous
designers, she has little left to prove. Having started out
in Paris in 1971 speaking no French at all (she spoke only
Russian and Slovak), she has now been an ambassador
for the French Red Cross for 11 years.
Among the causes she supports is increased media coverage of the problem of AIDS in Eastern Europe, particularly in Ukraine. She also travels to Mali and Niger regularly.
She has been part of the «Actions that save lives» first
aid campaign since it began in 1999, and in the same year
began to actively campaign against anti-personnel mines.
Wellbeing As a child, she says, “I didn’t feel beautiful”.
In 2006 she launched her own range of silicon beauty

products, which she uses herself because, even if she’s
not walking the catwalks any more, she’s not about to let
herself go. She confides that she loves to cook “tasty little

No doubt she’ll soon find someone who wants to do it for
her.

BEATRICE OF YORK
No more smocked dresses for Charlotte Casiraghi.
The 24 year old daughter of Caroline of Monaco and
Italian industrialist Stefano Casiraghi has changed
from a cute kid to a stylish lady, with international
fashion houses fighting to dress her.
The 4th in line to the throne of Monaco has
everything going for her: a beautiful brunette,
she is rich and above all talented. A passionate
horsewoman, she has had great success in show
jumping, but her brilliant performances extend well
beyond sport: a model pupil and perfectionist, she
studies philosophy and has already interned at The
Independent in London. A fabulous catch, then, but
she has often been seen in recent months in the
company of Alex Dellal, 25 year old son of a London
property tycoon. TATIANA MORENO

HESSEL
Edgar Morin has just published La Voie (“The
Way”), a work in which the 90 year old former
Resistance fighter, sociologist and philosopher
casts a critical eye over the troubles of our age,
and is deeply unhappy with what he sees. Then he
provides a road map to save the world.
Unrestrained profit Edgar Morin highlights
economic development as an area to address
immediately. While zones of great prosperity have
been created, this has been at the expense of a
great many of small farmers, and has created enormous zones of misery and poor living conditions
around the urban complexes of Africa, Asia and
Latin America. Created on an exclusively technoeconomic model where profit is unrestrained, planetary development ignores non-financial activity
and the relationships which remain a vital resource
in traditional societies.
The local within the global Based on
this, Edgar Morin calls for a development approach that favours
“the best, rather than the most”. This includes economic measures
which encourage food-producing cultures rather than the food-processing industry, decentralization of activity from over-stretched
cities, and free provision of essential medicines and the means to
generate sustainable energy to the countries in the southern hemisphere. In short, promote local development within the global.
Programme”, the author of the best-selling paperback
Time for Outrage! says immediately. “The UN has a Human
Development Index, and the aim of this programme is to
reduce poverty in the world and to promote growth and
fair trade”. Hessel never forgets that human beings are a
nation’s most valuable resource.
Marvellous and terrible Many young people don’t
believe in the work of these international organisations,
or in their promises. “They’re
wrong. Once you see that real problems exist, you can’t get discouraged and give up. Every generation
sees marvellous and terrible events
in their lifetime. For my generation,
we had our share of the terrible
with World War II. What’s marvellous now is that all these people
work together for good, and are
able to count on the enormous work
capacity of the various NGOs.” To
defend the values that place people
at the centre of development “young
people can also rely on the recent
Charter of Fundamental Rights, or
the Geneva Convention” throws
in Stéphane Hessel, for whom the
world will be, in the end, what we
want to make of it.
Looking after mother earth
The second area to address as a
matter of urgency is our idea of the
state. The author believes the world
must have a global understanding
of the needs of the earth itself. He
believes we lack a sense of common
destiny. Because of this, he proposes
a worldwide government based
on the United Nations. This body
would tackle the key problems of the
economy, the biosphere, weapons
of mass destruction, nuclear power
and the protection of our cultural
heritage. Quite a to-do list.
Save the world It remains to
be seen if these changes could take
place peacefully. “There are lots of
obstacles”, the philosopher responds
evasively. “But history has seen plenty of changes of direction.
Whether it’s religion or politics, everything starts with a change
of course. The important thing is that these courses align to
create a better way forward for the world and the future of
humanity” pleads this old man who, at 90, is still capable of
resistance. “Because I’ve kept my youthful hopes intact”, he
insists.
MORIN
STéPHANE
“I have confidence in mankind!” the former resistance
fighter and diplomat blazes. A two-time survivor of the hell
of the Nazi concentration camps, the 94 year old participated in the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights and believes that the younger generations must
overcome three main obstacles today to create a better
world tomorrow.
Increase of terrorism “First we have to protect
our planet from overexploitation
by limiting excessive consumption
of energy consumption and natural
resources. Then we have to reduce
the gap between the very rich and
the very poor. The inequality has
become much worse in recent years.
Finally, we have to ensure that the
poor and powerless receive intelligent aid to allow them to participate
in the democratic election of their
leaders. This is the only way to
protect ourselves against the growth
of terrorism across the world”, he
avows with passion.
Long-term battles So what
can the young people of today and
tomorrow do to tackle these issues
in the long term? “Go through

The author of 2010’s sensational Tu dois changer ta
vie (You must change your life), the German philosopher is one of the main academic proponents of
halting the decline of Europe, which he claims is
ongoing since the discovery of the New World. In
book after book he has forged a provocative vision
of modern Man, society, and its new religion, wellbeing. He calls for a revolution of the imagination,
proposing a radical new way of looking at the world
and human relationships.
He believes that the densification of civilisations
brings almost infinite probabilities of interaction with others, so that - despite the continuing
increase in single person households - city dwellers
are now never truly alone.

ROBERTO SAVIANO
There are few authors whose popularity assures
their survival. Roberto Saviano, author of „Gomorrah: Italy’s Other Mafia“, is one of them. Since
the publication of his book on the Neapolitan
Mafia, the Italian writer has received regular death
threats from the Camorra.
Now 31, the author has a permanent police escort,
and changes address every 2 or 3 days. Though
understandably frustrated by this, he remains
determined to denounce the insidious economic
and political influence of the Mafia in Europe and
around the world.
EDGAR MORIN
Doctor of Letters and Medicine, Jean Starobinski is
one of the great humanists of the century. He taught
French Literature in the Faculté des Lettres at Geneva
University, and is an internationally-renowned literary critic. His books have been translated into over
a dozen languages, and his works address a wide
spectrum of the human condition, from artistic creativity to the study of melancholy. For 29 years he has
chaired the prestigious forum Rencontres internationales de Genève, which provide a public opportunity
to hear conferences and debates on topical issues,
concentrating on Europe when they began in 1946,
and now worldwide. 91 years old now, Professor
Starobinski continues to be a humanist and academic
influence across the globe.
BALTASAR GARZóN
Born on 26 October 1955 in Torres, Spain, Baltasar
Garzón Real is one of the most influential jurists
in modern times. Over the course of his career he
has constantly returned to the issue of the Chilean
dictatorship: in London in 1998 he issued an international arrest warrant for the former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, with charges of genocide,
torture and terrorism.
Since then, crimes against humanity are not seen
as subject to a statute of limitations, and the
immunity of heads of state has been seriously
weakened. Other causes include the prosecution
of Argentinian government officials for genocide,
the request for exclusion of Italian Prime Minister
Silvio Berlusconi in the Telecinco enquiry, and his
criticisms of the military base at Guantanamo Bay
in Cuba. Today, „Super Garzon“ is concentrating on
international terrorism.

working for the protection of human rights. The visionary
former Secretary General also launched an independent body,
Africa Progress Panel, to follow up the promises of aid made to

at the time. The Arab Spring has confirmed the wisdom of awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.

Transgender Health).
Principles In 2007, he published, namely with the
collaboration of Randy Ettner, Principle of Transgender
Medecine and Surgery (The Haworth Press Inc.). The book
rapidly becomes a compulsory document for anyone
who is interested in the subject. To summarize, the book
questions the transgender problem from social, legal, emotional, historical, biological and economical viewpoints.

Having been trained as a reconstructive and aesthetic
plastic surgeon at the Université catholique de Louvain, in
Bruxelles, Dr. Elias is an associate doctor in the Hopitaux
universitaires de Genève, after having been the head
of a clinic for five years. Specialized in breast and face
reconstruction, he reopened Pr. Denys Montandon’s – one
of the first plastic surgeons of the city – clinic in Florissant,
26
monstrey
Dr. Stan J. Monstrey is probably one of the
prime contributors to the development of
transgender operations. He is also in part at
the heart of the evolution of society’s outlook
on the subject, being as he does not consider
the operation in itself, but regards it as a step
in a process that encompasses the entire
personnality, and also the social status of the
patient.
Reassignment Being a professor in plastic
surgeory and the head of the Plastic Surgeory
Department at the Hôpital universitaire de
Gand, in Belgium, he specializes – since 1990
– in the surgical treatment of transsexual
operations. As a member of the transgender
team of the Hôpital universitaire de Gand, he
accomplishes, on a weekly basis, sexual reassignment operations on transsexuals passing
from male to female, as well as from female to
male.
Politics The real advantage is the importance given to interdisciplinary collaboration.
Therefore, he continuously persues the improvement
of aesthetic as well as functional results, privileging
particularly new techniques of phalloplasty. Through the
transgender team of the Hôpital universitaire de Gand, he
is also active in political news raised by problems linked
to transsexualism. In 2003, he organized the meeting of
the Harry Benjamin International Dysphoria Association
(HBIGDA). Furthermore, he ensures the presidence of
the organizarion from 2005 to 2007 (being as the group
Geneva. He also gives consultations at a practice in the
Clinique de Genolier.
Prevention Nontheless, this master of the bistoury
privileges “a non surgical approach of the face. Above all,
one must favor prevention in order to not intervene once
the wrinkles are already incrusted”, he assures. Around
thirty, Dr. Elias advizes botox or hyaluronic acid injections,
“in order to prevent wrinkles and to not have to resort to
plastic surgery after the age of fifty. In this spirit, one will
demand a soft lift, which consists in moving the cheekbones upwards through the injection of hyaluronic acid.”
A substance secreted by the human body and that has the
advantage of being absorbed within two years at the most.
Maximal effect At a more advanced age, the traditional
lifting, which consisted for a long time in pulling the face
skin and creating a stereotyped elevated effect, is now a
part of the past: “We propose mini-lifts that make people
look about ten years younger and limit social exclusion to
only 10 to 15 days. The effect is very natural. The loved
ones do not immediately notice the change on the patient.”
In reality, the doctor works on the subcutanious muscles.
These fibers are raised and placed a little higher, as if it
were a face of 20 or 30 year old. One no longer pulls on
the skin thus avoiding last generation’s lifting effect. “The
gesture is a bit invasive and therefore a potential source of
post-operatory complications, specifies Dr. Elias. We have
therefore minimzed our movements and maximized our
results. These principles correspond to my philosophy of
this profession.”

beauty institutes, Dr. Gumener completed
his training in
reconstructive
plastic surgery
at the Universities of Geneva, Paris and Bordeaux.
He is a practicing doctor at the Hôpitaux universitaires de Genève and welcomes patients in his
Florissant (Geneva) office. His main interests – and
specialty – is face (lifting, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty) and breast (augmentation and reduction,
pexy and reconstruction) plastic surgery. “People
have realized that they don’t need to grow old
poorly, that it’s time to do so in an elegant manner.
Taking care of oneself helps one get through time in
a harmonious way”, affirms Dr. Gumener.
Baker
Dr. Dan
Le Louharn
Dr. Raphaël
In a time of standardized plastic
surgery, immediately ready to be
consumed, the work of Dr. Le Louharn makes a difference. In effect,
he privileges “customized services
associated with technical excellence.”
In his Parisian clinic, he defends the
decrease of risks and constantly evolving solutions for non invasive plastic
surgery. “The constantly greater
personalization of inventions make
more refined and elegant effects possible while preserving the efficiency
of the result”, insists Dr. Le Louharn.
Facial rejuvenation and embellishment (rhinoplasty, ears, chin, breast
implants) are all part of his specialties,
as well as body surgery, including
abdominoplasty and thigh lifting.
Of course, he is American. He is even
a New Yorker. But above all, Dr. Dan
Baker is unavoidable in the
small world of
plastic surgery.
Furthermore,
he has directed
many operations
and a series
of impressing
conferences
throughout
Europe. His
knowledge of
facial anatomy is
uncomparable.
His numerous
works about the damage inflicted on
the facial nerves have thus largely
contributed to the progress of cosmetics. However, he still treats non
cosmetic patients for nasal reconstruction cases or facial paralysis. In
any event, a liposuction under the
chin or on disgraceful fat clusters is
always possible during an operation
and will take a few years off your face.
Dr. Per Heden
Dr. Heden is a star in his field. At the head of the largest clinic in
Europe, his teams operate on more than 2000 patients per year.
The Akademikliniken, established in the region of Stockholm,
in Sweden, is also a center of new plastic surgery technologies.
Dr. Heden has especially popularized the concept of endoscopic
plastic surgery, namely with face lifting. This technique, which
is less invasive than the classical horizontal lifting technology,
creates a refined modification of the skin thanks to a filmed
operation and a micro
incision. The instruments and the micro
camera are introduced
through the mouth
or the inferior eyelid.
Besides generating a
very natural effect,
this technique also
eliminates all risks of
hair loss, a traditional
secondary effect of
classical liftings.
