Connection - Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative
All Around Green Country COVER: The distinction of being the birthplace of Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative belongs to the community northwest of Adair known as Wauhillau (pronounce wah-hee-lah). The community was home to the first co-op substation and to Howard Freeman, the first-ever board of trustees president. 96-year-old Bessie Kinion was there during the inception of the cooperative. She helps us understand life before electricity on page 4 inside this issue of Northeast Connection. INSIDE: Sticker shock Here are some things to consider when dealing with higher seasonal electric bills. 3 Where it all began Adair resident Bessie Kinion provides a unique historical perspective on our cooperative. 4 Stake your claim An unclaimed patronage capital check could be waiting for you. 6 Light up your life Compact fluorescent light bulbs don’t really deserve the bad rap they get. 10 No Lucky Charms here Our recipe feature focuses on Irish lore and legend, just in time for St. Paddy’s Day. 11 Don’t become a statistic Resolve electrical issues before they become a problem in your home or business. 12 Northeast Connection Events are published as space allows and must be submitted at least 60 days in advance. It was around 1947 when the rural electric cooperative began building lines into rural Roger Mills County, Farmer remembers. “Each day I rode the school bus I counted power poles to see how much progress had been made towards our family farm,” he said. “The progress was painfully slow.” Farmer said his family finally received electricity about one year after a local resident aquired the first television set in the county. Do you have a story to share? N ortheast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative is celebrating its 75th year of business in 2013 and we would like to hear from members who were with us during our formative years. If you have a story to share about the arrival of electricity in northeast Oklahoma, please email us at [email protected] or contact us by mail at: Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, Attn: Public Relations, P. O. Box 948, Vinita, OK 74301. Connection Northeast Let’s talk about those higher electric bills I t was great to see so many of you at the Grove Home & Garden Show in February. Such events allow cooperative employees an opportunity to visit with members one on one, and that is something we truly enjoy. Some members with whom I spoke mentioned receiving high electric bills this winter. A few even thought the cooperative had implemented a rate increase. This is not the case. Our last rate increase took effect January 2011. There are two things you should always consider if you receive a bill that is higher than normal. The first is the number of days being billed. Prior to February 2013, member bills could include up to 35 days of electric usage. With billing cycles like that, it can be like adding an extra week to your monthly bill. Cindy Hefner The second consideration is the usage itself. It is sometimes difficult to recall exactly how cold it was Manager of a month ago or more, but looking back at December Public Relations 2012, we had 24 days with an average temperature in the 40s. There were ten days that month where the average temperature stayed below the freezing mark and eight days where the low temperature was in the teens. We hit the 12 degrees F mark twice. When temperatures plummet and your heating system struggles to keep pace with demand, the backup may kick in to help maintain the temperature of the home at the desired level. In most cases, this supplemental heat is produced by electric resistance (similar to a toaster oven or a space heater). With this method of “inefficient” heat, one can see how usage can quickly increase. Starting in February 2013, the cooperative implemented a change in its billing process to address longer billing cycles. This change brings more consistency to bill reading periods. Bills are calculated on the same day each month and calculation dates for the four cycles are the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th day of each month. Bills are mailed the following working business day. This new procedure does away with shorter 27-day and longer 35-day billing periods and replaces them with more consistent billing periods in 28- to 33-day range. This is not a perfect fix but it is step in the right direction. It brings billing periods closer to 30-31 days, with the understanding that weekends and holidays make this more challenging. I always like to remind members who have high bill concerns that there are many ways to reduce the amount we spend on energy. Adding insulation, caulking around windows and doors, replacing outdated incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents (CFLs) or LEDs, replacing the air filter on your home’s central heating unit monthly, replacing older appliances with ENERGY STAR-qualified models, turning your hot water heater to 120 degrees F, and installing a programmable thermostat are just a few ways to make a significant impact on your monthly energy bill. Another way to help smooth the occasional peaks that come with seasonal usage is by choosing a payment option that “levelizes” your electric bills. Visit us online at www. neelectric.com to learn more about our Average Monthly Payment Plan. So, while the short answer to the questions we received from members at the Grove Home & Garden Show is “No, we haven’t had a rate increase,” the longer answer is a bit more complex. Either way, you can rest assured that the cooperative is working for you and that, ultimately, there are many factors within our control as individuals when it comes to using and saving energy in our homes and businesses. Northeast Connection is published monthly as an effective means of communicating news, information and innovative thinking that enhances the profitability and quality of life for members of Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative. Clarence helped 4 Northeast Connection Campbell wire the Kinion home and could do it himself after that. Clarence later became qualified to inspect home wiring. “Everett Campbell was a smart guy,” said Bessie. “Clarence learned everything he knew from Everett.” Added Bessie: “We were all just a bunch of poor farmers. No one had any money back then. But, we did have a good group of men who were willing to do anything they could to improve things.” -o0o The Kinions’ first electric bill was $3. Years later they added a brooder house to quiet son Jimmy’s constant pleading. The bill shot up to $9. “We like to have died when we saw that bill,” A kerosene lamp Bessie laughed. “But that (right) converted to boy had to have those electric by Clarence chickens.” Kinion and (below) the wooden wall Additional “luxuries” phone that still hangs would soon follow. Bessie’s first purchase was an electric in the Kinion home. iron. She said ironing with the old flat irons was a chore she did not miss. She had three irons she would rotate, using the removeable handle with one while the others heated atop a wood stove. A refrigerator came next. Bessie also bought an electric mixer, which was still going strong until a few years back. Clarence was proud of his electric welder and the electric cooler in the barn for keeping milk and eggs. For all the convenience those General Electric appliances afforded, the Kinions never forgot what life was like before the advent of electricity. Bessie recalls those Saturday nights when they’d pull the Model T up close to the house. The only radio for miles—it was an old Philco—was hooked up to the car’s battery and set in the window. Neighbors would come to just visit and listen to the radio. “We couldn’t do without that little old radio,” Bessie said. An extra battery was eventually purchased as a backup. Meal preparation was quite different without electric kitchen appliances. Putting together a meal of fried chicken, creamed new potatoes, creamed peas and wilted lettuce took several hours. Cream was plentiful so potatoes and peas were always served creamed, Bessie explained. “And you didn’t just run off to the store and buy all that stuff,” she said. Sewing machines were a popular item, but Bessie never saw the need. She is an accomplished quilter and has plenty of practice using only a needle and her two hands. “I bet I’ve made a thousand quilts,” she laughed. “I used to quilt for people.” It has been a while since Bessie quilted, so she started a project just recently to see if she still had the knack. She does. It is beautiful. “A sewing machine never touched this quilt,” she assured. “I’d rather have one quilt I’m proud of than a dozen I’m ashamed of.” -o0o Growing up a farm girl in rural northeast Oklahoma gave Bessie (her maiden name was Hamill) a unique and authentic perspective on life. She certainly has a deep appreciation for things many of us take for granted. By no means was it an easy life. She walked a mile and half every day to the one-room schoolhouse at Lone Elm. When the weather was bad, she remembers her father taking the family to church in a wagon. He would load the wagon with hay and they would duck under a tarp to protect themselves from the elements. Hard work was the norm, but there were exceptions. Bored one day with nothing to do, Bessie decided to crank up the old Model T and drive around the pasture. She’d seen it done time and again and felt confident she could operate the vehicle. No one was around to stop her. So she climbed behind the wheel and headed out for a joyride. She was only eleven years old. Bessie and sister Emma attended high school at Adair. Bessie’s father rented a house in town for the two girls and their friends Juanita and Ava Petty during the school year. He even brought them a cow to keep in the yard so they’d have plenty of milk. She saw how very different life was for the city girls and swore she’d never marry a farmer. -o0o Bessie gave up driving a few years back, but she still gets around well enough to live on her own and can keep house with the best of them. Her home is full of vivid reminders of the past. Many have never seen a wooden phone like the Western Electric Company model that still hangs on the wall of Bessie’s home. Clarence was a hard-worker and resourceful. He sold cream back in the days of hand-crank cream separators and then sold milk once electric separators came along. Obtaining electric milkers helped further boost production. Clarence has been gone since 1966 when a second heart attack claimed his life. He was only 48. He had his first heart attack at age 37. Folks around the Pryor area may remember Clarence from the egg route he ran for several years. Bessie has suffered more than her share of loss. She has dealt with the passing of many loved ones over the years, including the tragic death of son Jimmie, who was fatally kicked in the chest by a horse on the day of his 33rd birthday. She lost three of her best friends in the past year. “Tomorrow is not a promise,” she reminds. 9 March 2013 Where’s the love for those CFLs? I f you discuss energy efficiency as much as I do, you are bound to hear someone voice their displeasure with the CFL. I should probably clarify that I’m not talking about the Canadian Football League. I am referring instead to the compact fluorescent light bulb. Craig Hendrickson I am a fan of the bulb, Residential but I understand why Energy Auditor others are not. Let’s address each concern. My light is yellow. The next time you find yourself in the store looking at a package of CFLs, look closely for a four-digit number followed by the letter “K.” For whatever reason, this information will be in the smallest print possible, but it will be there. The letter “K” stands for Kelvin. Kelvin is a measurement of temperature and temperature affects the color of the light. Lower Kelvin numbers make the light appear more yellow; higher Kelvin numbers make the light blue. Somewhere in between the two is a happy medium that produces a white light. CFLs range from 2700 K to 6500 K. For a whiter light (and to me a brighter light), look for CFLs rated 3500 K to 4100 K. Incandescent bulbs range from 2700 K to 3000 K. My CFL bulb has mercury. CFLs do contain a trace amount of mercury, but so does your watch battery. In fact your watch battery has more mercury than a CFL. Incandescent bulbs have no mercury, but they use four times more energy than a CFL. That means a coal-fired plant which emits sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and, yes, you guessed it, mercury, is working four times longer to operate those incandescent bulbs. My CFL needs to be recycled. How can I recycle my CFLs, you ask? Home Depot stores will take your unbroken CFL bulbs at no cost to 10 Northeast Connection you. If the bulb is broken, check out the cleanup procedure online at energystar.gov. Recent studies also show that, as a CFL is used, much of the mercury vapor is fused to the inside of the bulb. So even if it is broken, a CFL may have less mercury escape than previously believed. My CFL bulb is ugly. Many do not like the spiral, “squiggly” shape of CFL bulbs. They do represent a sharp contrast to the sleek, rounded incandescents we grew up with. The truth is that almost every demand for lighting can now be found in a CFL format. This includes: vanity bulbs, bug lights, bell-shaped floodlights and spotlights, small candelabra bulbs with both small and large bases, three-way bulbs and dimmable bulbs. My CFL bulb didn’t last very long. Most CFL brands say their product will last ten times longer than incandescent bulbs. Maybe yours didn’t last that long. Your bulb may have been one of the early models, or it may have just been plain defective. I’ve had pretty good luck with mine. Most of them have lasted for years. The good news is that the bulbs being manufactured these days are even better. When you pull a package of CFLs off the store shelf, you don’t know how old the bulb is. It could have been a early model or maybe it has been stored in a warehouse for who knows how long. Look at the package for evidence of a newer bulb. Features such as “instant on” didn’t come along until later generations of manufacturing. Keep the bulbs original package and staple the receipt to it. If the bulb goes bad, return it back to the store so they can deliver a message of dissatisfaction to the manufacturer. There’s got to be something better. There is if you are willing to pay a little more up front. LED (short for “light-emitting diode”) bulbs are here and are getting cheaper with time. Keep an eye out as prices drop. An LED bulb is supposed to last about three times longer than a CFL bulb. E veryone is a wee bit Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. In fact, many can scarcely wait for the perfect reason to dive into a hot plate of corned beef. After all, it’s a traditional Irish meal, right? Wrong. In early Ireland, producing corned beef was common, but it wasn’t a dish the Irish, themselves, could enjoy. farmers who grew the crops and raised the cattle, but were not allowed to keep any for themselves. Instead, they were allowed to live on and farm small parcels of the worst land to feed their families. Struggling to survive, the Irish became dependent on the potato, which would grow in relatively small plots and tolerate poor soil. British landlords owned 80 percent of the land in Ireland. They used the property to raise beef cattle, as well as various crops. Seventy-five percent of Ireland’s population was poor, tenant When potato blight struck in the1840s, the Irish were left with little to eat. More than one million died of starvation while being forced to raise the landlords’ beef and crops or face eviction, leaving no chance to feed a family. The primary foods of the Irish were dairy and grain products, but given the shortage of land and resources, the more fortunate among the Irish survived on pork, cabbage, and potatoes. So, readers, that is why this month’s recipe page does not include a spot for corned beef. What you will find, however, are some great recipes for authentic Irish dishes. Northeast Oklahoma E lectric Cooperative P.O. Box 948, Vinita, OK 74301 • www.neelectric.com PRSRT STD U.S. POSTAGE PAID TULSA, OK Permit 2171 Don’t get burned by electrical problems E lectrical defects cause a significant number of residential fires each year, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. In 2011, home electrical problems accounted for 67,800 fires, 485 deaths, 2305 injuries and $868 million in property losses. Many of these fires are preventable. Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative urges its members to be aware of electrical hazards in their homes and businesses. “Make it a regular habit to inspect all appliances, cords and plugs,” advised NEOEC Safety Director Bret Boyd. “Check for loose wall receptacles and lighting fixtures, and damaged wires.” Boyd urged homeowners to listen for popping or sizzling sounds behind walls and replace switches that are hot to the touch, receptacles that spark, and lights that flicker. Electrical plugs and cords usually deteriorate gradually, making damage difficult to detect. “Inspect all appliance cords and plugs for wear at least once a year,” said Boyd. “Make sure they are not frayed or cracked, placed under carpets or rugs, or located in high traffic areas. Do not nail or staple them to walls, floors or 12 Northeast Connection other objects.” Boyd added that overloaded electrical systems can be a dangerous prelude to fire. Common indicators of an overloaded circuit, he said, would be lights dimming when an appliance is switched on, a shrinking picture on the television, slow-heating appliances, blown fuses or tripped circuits. Overloaded outlets are a major cause of residential fires. These circuits carry too much electricity, which generates heat in undetectable amounts. The heat causes wear on the internal wiring system and can ignite a fire. To prevent overloading, Boyd recommends the following: • Avoid using extension cords on a permanent basis and never plug more than two home appliances into an outlet at once. • Use only outlets designed to handle multiple plugs. Each outlet or circuit should not exceed 1500 watts, so give special consideration to appliances that use 1,000 or more such as refrigerators, hot plates, irons, microwave ovens, dishwashers, heaters and air conditioners. • Avoid plugging large appliances into the same outlet or circuit. If a circuit breaker trips or a fuse blows frequently, immediately reduce the number of appliances on that circuit.
