Since meeting Kenro for the first time the year before, I had become familiar with the organization he founded in 1995, Friends Without A Border (Friends). He was inspired—and perhaps haunted—by the memory of watching a ten-year-old girl in Siem Reap die because there simply was no medical treatment to give her. The more I learned about the organization and what it had accomplished—the hospital opened in 1999 and by 2005 had provided care to more than 300,000 children—the more inspired I felt to do something myself. Before I could make the call, offering my services to him in whatever way he could use them, Kenro reached out to me. When I readily accepted his invitation to work on the auction, Kenro expressed his gratitude for my willingness to serve a dream that, against great odds, he had made into a reality. But I soon realized that it was I who would be forever grateful to him for what he was giving me. Seven years earlier, in 1998, I had attended my first Friends of Friends Photography Auction which was then held at Howard Greenberg’s gallery in Soho. At that auction I bought a beautiful print by Eikoh Hosoe, Otoko to Onna (Man and Woman) #33, 1960. In it two birds are cradled firmly but gently in the hands of a man who holds them in front of his naked torso, close to his heart. The birds’ beaks are just touching each other, as if in a kiss. Within the general context of Hosoe’s often more strenuous and challenging Man and Woman series—known for its starkly graphic, high-contrast quality—it is a noticeably tender image. It is one I had long admired and the print immediately became one of my most cherished possessions. Once I began my work on the auction in 2005 I felt an incredible sense of satisfaction unlike any I had known before. I knew I was contributing to making a difference in the lives of children who would otherwise suffer and die from treatable illnesses. In a way I was able to claim a small part of Kenro’s dream as my own and know that I was helping to save the lives of children in whose faces, while I did not know them, I saw my own little then five-year-old boy. In the years since, the Hosoe print on my wall has taken on a new significance. I no longer look at it and see only the creative vision of its maker, the beauty of its composition, and the quality of its printing. In those two little birds I see children who would otherwise be vulnerable if not for the protective comfort of the strong hands that hold them— hands that represent humanity as a whole but that I now also see as my own. I came to realize that what Kenro had succeeded at was not just the building of a children’s hospital which to date has treated nearly 700,000 children and provides its services almost entirely for free…free! He has also made his dream that of the many people who have supported it—the people who work for Friends, the many artists who generously contribute their work each year, and those who attend the auction and who, as I did, just might find themselves fortunate enough to buy a beautiful print and soon realize that they have in fact acquired and, in the process, have also given so much more. Gregory Wakabayashi Friends of Friends Photography Auction Committee Art Director, Welcome Books, New York ANGKOR HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN CONTINUES WITH YOUR SUPPORT © Karl Grobl This year marked a very special achievement for Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) – ten years of providing compassionate care to the children of Cambodia. Since its inception in 1999, over 700,000 children have received high-quality, comprehensive treatment at AHC. What’s more, the reach of the hospital has continued to grow thanks to the success of the Capacity Building and Health Education Program, and the now international Medical Education Center. The emphasis placed on training and developing medical staff in Cambodia over the past ten years means that even more lives can be saved. The year 2009 has been marked with some major accomplishments for AHC: two rounds of open heart surgeries were successfully executed, raising the level of quality of care provided at AHC even higher than before; three research studies conducted at AHC were selected to be published in international medical journals; and AHC doctors and nurses represented the hospital at conferences worldwide. Additionally, the construction of the Capacity Building and Health Education Program building was completed on AHC ground, allowing for closer collaboration with AHC in providing a preventative approach to healthcare in the rural areas of Cambodia. © Karl Grobl The medical education programs at AHC continue to thrive. As an officially recognized teaching hospital by the Cambodian Ministry of Health, AHC had the privilege of educating more than 2,000 healthcare workers throughout the past year. The hospital also became a training site for Lao doctors and nurses, giving them the opportunity to develop advanced skills they can take back to their own country. The Center for Friends Without A Border (Friends Center) celebrated its first anniversary this year, and earned two awards for architecture and design. Symbolizing a nexus of caring for the community and ecological sustainability, the Friends Center has served as a comfortable place to welcome visitors from around the world and provide them with information about the work being done at AHC. The Friends Center hosted several events to raise funds and awareness over the past year, furthering our efforts to be more self-sustaining. We sincerely thank all of the photographers, galleries and collectors who have donated their artwork. We also thank the generous sponsors who have provided financial support, the committee members who have devoted enormous amounts of time and energy, and the attendees, without whose participation the great work being done at AHC would not be possible. Only together, we can achieve our goals in caring for Cambodia’s children. © Karl Grobl Kenro Izu’s vision of providing quality and compassionate care to the children of Cambodia continues to be realized each and every day at AHC. Over the past sixteen years his vision has grown into Cambodia’s strongest hope for a healthy future. His dream has resonated in the hearts of many photographers and others in the art community. Their support is what makes the annual Friends of Friends Photography Auction possible. Sugimoto photographed suites of “stereometric exemplars,” fabricated in Germany in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and now owned by the University of Tokyo. The mathematical models are sculptural renderings of trigonometric functions: the mechanical models were teaching aids for showing the dynamics of Industrial Revolution-age machinery. It is Sugimoto’s intention to express “Art resides even in things with no artistic intentions.” The image appears in the artist’s monograph Hiroshi Sugimoto, Etant donne: Le Grand Verre (Foundation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, 2005) pg 38.
