photographer never knows when the perfect captured moment will present itself. It is a fevered and sometimes
desperate search, and though it helps greatly to have a deep appreciation for the art of photography, a thirst for
knowledge, and lots and lots of patience, sometimes the moment comes without warning.
In 1993, while waiting for the perfect moment to present itself at Angkor Wat, Kenro Izu experienced a different kind
of moment. On that early morning in Cambodia, standing ready in front of Angkor Wat with his large format camera,
Kenro saw a group of young kids staring up at him. He first noticed their big smiles and curious spirit, but then he
noticed that many of them were missing limbs from encounters with land mines. This led him to do research into the
local healthcare system, and what he found was a broken and corrupt system. As he was visiting a local hospital,
he saw a little girl pass away as her father helplessly watched, because he didn’t have enough money to pay for his
daughter’s care. That was the moment, and in that moment Kenro knew he had to do something.

It has been 20 years since Kenro captured that moment, and in that short time, Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC)
has become the essential pediatric treatment and teaching institution for the country. What started as a small Outpatient Department has blossomed into a full service children’s hospital that includes dental, vision, outreach programs,
nutrition classes, a medical education center, heart surgery, low acuity unit, inpatient department, triage, intensive care
unit, a Satellite clinic, and so much more.

In January of this year, another moment was celebrated – the independence of AHC.
With a big smile on his face, Kenro handed a heart-shaped key to the staff of AHC
and watched them raise it high and proudly above their heads. As Kenro has described
it, “it was a bittersweet moment because I feel like a father who is watching his children
move away from home to find their independence and success in the world.”

“On the same trip that I visited AHC for its groundbreaking ceremony fifteen years ago, I also visited an ancient
Buddhist site in Luang Prabang, Laos. It is now my renewed dream to bring compassionate care to those children
who suffer from the lack of medical care in this quaint beautiful town that I am so found of. My new dream has already
become a new goal for Friends, and I hope that it will be something you look forward to and be a part of with us.”
–Kenro Izu
And, as is the case with every perfectly captured moment, there are ripple effects…

A state-of-the-art photo booth will be presented by the BOSCO.
Friends is thrilled to announce that we are partnering with the Luang Prabang Provincial
Hospital and Health Department to bring the same high-quality and compassionate
care that was achieved at AHC to the children of Laos. Plans are currently being
finalized for the creation of Lao Friends Hospital for Children. A medical baseline
survey is already underway, and construction is slated to begin this November.
None of this would be possible without the tremendous support from the photography
community. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the photographers,
galleries, and collectors who have contributed to the 16th Annual Friends of Friends
Photography Auction. We thank the artists whose photographs make the auction possible; our generous donors who
provide essential support; committee members who give so much of their time, energy, and talent to the event; and,
of course, a sincere thank you to everyone who attends the auction. Together, we are creating a healthier future for
the children of Southeast Asia.

The image was photographed in Afghanistan in May, 1980.
Sable Island, known as “the Graveyard of the Atlantic,”
sits 100 miles off the coast of Nova Scotia. Since the
seventeenth century, it has been the site of more than 475
shipwrecks. Just 26 miles in length and less than 1 mile
wide, it is home to more than 400 wild horses. Abandoned
there by sailors long ago or cast ashore from wrecks on
the many sandbars that surround the island, this feral herd
has managed to thrive in an austere, unforgiving environment that offers not a single sheltering tree and just sea
grass and rainwater ponds for sustenance.

Samburu Tribe in Mt. Nyira, Kenyan
Kinesi often helps his older brother take care of the family goats. He is
the only one of seven children who was selected by his parents to
attend school. Since his Samburu family is semi-nomadic, sometimes
he must walk alone nearly four hours – over terrain populated by
baboons and leopards – to get to the only school in his district.
His mother says that Kinesi runs most of the way – not from fear of
predators, but from the excitement of school.

Michael Clinton is the author of five photography books depicting his global travels and
a non-fiction work titled The Globetrotter Diaries (Glitterati, 2013). As a teenager, Clinton
promised himself that he would visit 100 countries during his lifetime; this quest was
realized during a trip to Antarctica in 2003. His recent travel to Mongolia marked his 123rd
country. Images in this portfolio are an expression of a childhood dream fulfilled, while also
transcending the boundaries of place and time.

Known for his images of Niyodo River in Kochi, Takahashi’s images
of nature scenes have been extensively exhibited. His work is in the
collection of the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe.
Since childhood, Someya always held an image
of Calcutta that was not the typical “sacred &
secular” or “noisy & chaotic”, but something
more romantic: a city with sadness and beauty of
life. His wish is that his images, taken with a large
format camera, will one day bring the beautiful
memories of the city back to life for those who
live there.

How to place absentee and phone bids
Even if you are not able to physically attend the 16th annual Friends of
Friends Photography Auction on December 10, 2013, you can still bid
on photographs and books by filling out the absentee/phone bid form
and mailing or faxing it to Friends Without A Border by 3:00pm EST on
December 10.
The auctioneer will accept bids from those present at the auction in
addition to absentee and phone bids. Live bids may be executed lower
than the top bid you place. The estimates listed are guides for bidding
only and do not reflect what the print will sell for. If matching bids are
entered by two or more parties, the first bid received by Friends will take
precedence. Friends staff, board members and volunteers may bid at
the auction for themselves, or they may execute bids for absentees.
Absentee and phone bids must be submitted in advance with valid
credit card information. In the case that the absentee or phone bid
is successful the credit card will be charged on the night of the
auction. Placing an absentee bid is considered authorization for this
transaction.
Friends Without A Border would like to express profound gratitude to everyone who makes the annual Friends of Friends
Photography Auction possible: all participating photographers, contributors, committee members and sponsors.
To place a phone bid, please indicate this on your bid form. Please note
that phone bids can be placed only for live lots, and that volunteers
helping with phone bids cannot facilitate placing bids on silent lots.
You must provide us with a phone number where you can be reached
on the night of the auction, Tuesday December 10, 2013 from 6:00 8:30pm EST, and the lots that you are interested in bidding on. In case
of any problem with phone lines, we advise you to provide emergency
bids on the form. You will be contacted one hour before your first lot
will be auctioned and you will be bidding live via telephone with other
bidders during the live auction.

to evaluate the condition of the property offered in the auction. Please
feel free to contact Friends for a report on the condition of any prints.
Be reminded that each lot is “as is” and all transactions are final. Unless
a lot is identified as part of a limited edition, no edition limit should
be assumed. Unless a lot is identified as having been printed in a
certain year, no date of printing can be guaranteed. The highest bidder
acknowledged by the auctioneer will obtain the item: in the event of any
dispute between bidders, the auctioneer will have final discretion and
his record shall be binding and conclusive. If the auctioneer decides
that any opening bid is below the value of the article offered, he may
reject the bid and withdraw the article from the auction.
