2011 annual report - Bread for the World
2011 annual report bread for the world • bread for the world institute Our Mission Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. By changing policies, programs and conditions that allow hunger and poverty to persist, we provide help and opportunity far beyond the communities where we live. Rick Reinhard Bread for the World Institute provides policy analysis on hunger and strategies to end it. The Institute educates opinion leaders, policy makers, and the public about hunger in the United States and abroad. Rev. Gabriel Salguero and his wife, Jeanette, on day two of Bread for the World’s 2011 Gathering in Bender Arena at American University on Sunday, June 12, 2011. 2 2011 Annual Report Bread for the World • Bread for the World Institute Board of Directors David Miner, Chair Indianapolis, IN, Chair of Bread for the World board of directors; Bread activist Gerald Kolschowsky Aurora, IL, Former Chairman and Co-CEO OSI Industries, LLC; Iowa State University Foundation William Epps, Vice Chair Los Angeles, CA, Senior Pastor, Second Baptist Church Alan Larson Reston, VA, Senior Advisor, Covington & Burling, LLP; Former Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business and Agricultural Affairs Elizabeth Henry, Secretary Oakland, CA, Organizer, East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy Bob Terry, Treasurer Birmingham, AL, Publisher and editor of The Alabama Baptist Judith Andrews Houston, TX, Bread for the World Development Committee Nancy Arnison Chicago, IL, Director, ELCA Hunger Program David Beckmann Alexandria, VA, President, Bread for the World and Bread for the World Institute; Lutheran pastor, economist Deborah Blue Chicago, IL, Executive Minister, Dept. of Compassion, Mercy and Justice, Evangelical Covenant Church Dayna Cade Washington, DC, President, DC Sgrategies, LLC Juan Luis Calderón West New York, NJ, Saint Joseph of the Palisades Parish John Carr Cheverly, MD, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Ronald Cunningham Dallas, TX, Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church Derick Dailey Fulton, MO, 2011 Graduate, Westminster College, Bread 2008 Hunger Justice Leader Jim Detterick New York, NY, Managing Director, Corporate Client Group Director, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, LLC. David Beckmann President Throughout the year, we saw major attacks and proposals to cut funding for programs vital to hungry and poor people. Bread for the World members and others of faith voiced their opposition—and overall, we prevailed. Our successes during 2011 are victories for hungry people in the United States and around the world. Thousands of letters to Congress from Bread for the World members last spring helped to ensure adequate funding for international aid—and some progress toward reform. The momentum of the 2010 World Food Prize helped Bread for the World achieve unprecedented media exposure, which strengthened our message and reach. Despite the surge in poverty brought about by the recession, SNAP (formerly food stamps), unemployment insurance, and tax credits for low-income workers are keeping hunger at bay for millions of American families. This is thanks in no small part to Bread for the World’s powerful united witness. Praise God for answered prayers; our united voices created a circle of protection around time-tested, cost-effective programs that address the causes of hunger. We are fortunate to live in a powerful democracy with worldwide impact. Every member of Bread for the World participates in God’s liberation of hungry people. May God bless you as you continue to press our leaders to end hunger. 2011 Victories A Circle of Protection Throughout 2011, we saw major attacks and proposals to drastically cut programs for hungry and poor people. Beginning with February’s H.R. 1—the House Republicans’ bill to fund the federal government for the remainder of the fiscal year—we faced legislation that threatened our country’s ability to combat hunger and poverty. In response, Bread for the World members and our allies rallied. More than 60 national church leaders and 8,000 other people signed a statement, urging Congress to form a circle of protection around programs vital to hungry people. When the year ended and the FY 2012 appropriations bills were passed, hunger- and poverty-focused relief programs were relatively unscathed. Against immense odds, Bread for the World achieved one of the greatest victories in our history. 4 2011 Annual Report Bread for the World • Bread for the World Institute 2011 Highlights Foreign Aid The opportunity to reform U.S. foreign aid policies and programs last year enabled us to help transform despair into dignity. Our 2011 Offering of Letters drew unprecedented participation from Bread for the World congregations calling for adequate funding and effective reform of international aid. In October, Congressman Ted Poe, a Republican from Texas, introduced the Foreign Aid Transparency and Accountability Act, which would strengthen monitoring and evaluation and make it easier to access information on U.S. foreign assistance. National Gathering In June, more than 600 people came to Washington, DC, for events in conjunction with Bread for the World’s National Gathering 2011 and our annual Lobby Day. Over four days, participants worshipped together, heard from experts, and organized to change the politics of hunger. In faceto-face meetings with their members of Congress, they urged their senators and representatives not to balance the federal budget by cutting programs that benefit hungry people in the United States and abroad. Alisa Booze Troetschel Unemployment Insurance Bread for the World and our allies joined voices against proposed changes that would have reduced benefits and access to unemployment insurance. We also opposed Watoto Children’s Choir from Uganda performs at Bread for the World’s 2011 Gathering in Bender Arena at American University on Sunday, June 12, 2011. Bread for the World • Bread for the World Institute 2011 Annual Report 5 2011 Highlights proposals to pay for these extensions by cutting other poverty reduction programs. Just before Christmas, these efforts bore fruit as Congress extended unemployment benefits and the payroll tax cuts—without cuts to other programs aiding people in poverty. In 2011, Bread for the World Institute served as a leader in the international effort to improve nutrition for mothers and children in the 1,000 days from pregnancy through a child’s second birthday. from pregnancy through a child’s second birthday. As part of the National Gathering, the Institute and Concern Worldwide, an Irish development organization, cosponsored a “1,000 Days to Scale Up Nutrition for Mothers and Children.” This meeting brought together more than 100 experts from several dozen developing countries. Financial Statements In 2011, combined revenue for Bread for the World and Bread for the World Institute totaled $13.9 Global Conference on Maternal million. Thousands of individuals and families—along with many Child Nutrition churches and church organizations— Bread for the World Institute generously contributed over half of serves as a leader in the SUN that amount. (Scaling Up Nutrition) movement, Expenses for Bread for the which focuses on the 1,000 days World and the Institute totaled $13.5 million in 2011. We are proud to have devoted 89 percent of our expenses to program and membership services; just 11 percent was used for fundraising, administrative and management expenses—a notable ratio. Summaries of our 2011 financial statement are found on page 8 of this report. Copies of the audited financial statements are provided upon request or can be downloaded from www.bread.org/about-us. We are careful stewards of the funds entrusted to us by Bread for the World members and others. For the fifth year running, Bread for the World Institute earned the top rating—four stars—from Charity Navigator and an “A” rating from the American Institute for Philanthropy. Laura Elizabeth Pohl The conference “1,000 Days to Scale Up Nutrition for Mothers and Children” drew more than 600 participants from all over the world. It was co-hosted by a coalition of hunger organizations including Bread for the World, 1,000 Days, Alliance to End Hunger, CARE, ChildFund, Concern Worldwide, GAIN, Helen Keller International, the World Food Program USA and WorldVision. 6 2011 Annual Report Bread for the World • Bread for the World Institute 2011 Highlights Hunger Report Rebalancing Act Updating U.S. Food and Farm Policies 2012 Hunger Report November 2011 saw the release of Bread for the World Institute’s 2012 Hunger Report, Rebalancing Act: Updating U.S. Food and Farm Policies. The report makes the case for protecting and improving nutrition programs in this country and food aid internationally. The report also recommends ways for the federal government to better respond to current and future challenges in agriculture and nutrition. God calls us to pray, fast, give alms, and to speak out for justice. Thank you—for taking action and making a difference. Thank you—for all that we have achieved this year. David Beckmann President, Bread for the World 2012 Offering of Letters Laura Elizabeth Pohl Anticipating more budget cuts to programs vital to hungry and poor people, Bread decided that the 2012 Offering of Letters be on “Expanding the Circle of Protection.” It is a new model, designed to allow flexibility in a rapidly changing legislative environment. An overall umbrella campaign urges Congress to protect funding for programs vital to hungry people in the United States and abroad. Congregations and others may also choose to write letters to Congress on issues in four mini campaigns: domestic nutrition, poverty-focused foreign assistance, tax credits for lowincome families, and international food aid programs. Space does not permit us to recognize all of our members whose generous financial support strengthens our collective Christian voice on behalf of hungry people. Our heartfelt gratitude to them. Contributions to Bread for the World are not tax-deductible because its members lobby Congress on behalf of hungry people. Many individuals and families chose to support Bread for the World Institute. Contributions to the Institute are tax-deductible and support research and education, including the annual Hunger Report and research on maternal and child nutrition and immigration. 2011 Annual Report 15 425 3rd Street SW, Suite 1200 Washington, DC 20024 Phone: 1.800.822.7323 • Fax: 202.639.9401 www.bread.org facebook.com/breadfortheworld twitter.com/bread4theworld flickr.com/breadfortheworld youtube.com/breadfortheworld
