From the Helm
On June 28,
2008, I was
sworn in as the
BYC Treasurer
and
became
a part of the Club’s leadership
team. That was the beginning of
a three year journey which has
included serving as both the Rear
and Vice Commodores. The time
has flown by, and now you have
entrusted me to lead our Club as
your Commodore. I am thrilled
with your support and I am truly
proud and honored to serve you!
One of the reasons that time
has passed so quickly is because
of the fantastic leadership we have
at our Club. The past Officers and
Board of Directors have worked
harmoniously in dealing with
issues, recommending changes
and making informed decisions
that affect our future. I thank them
all for their voluntary service and
numerous contributions! I am
also excited about the opportunity
to continue this effective and
efficient leadership with the
new Officers and Board that was
installed at Change of Watch on
June 25th.
Many of you have asked me
what plans I have for the BYC
going forward. The following
paragraphs contain a few of my
thoughts regarding our future. My
plan is to keep you informed
on our progress in forthcoming
articles.
First and foremost, we need
to keep our Club on the path of
financial stability that has been
established over the past few
years. We have successfully grown
our restricted reserves, but we
need some additional focus on
eliminating our operating loss.
My confidence is high that we can
achieve that goal over the coming
months.
Another area of focus this year
is the recruitment and retention of
younger members. Although I’m
Grandpa to ten grandchildren, I
certainly do not consider myself
old. But there is recognition that
the future of our Club is dependent
upon attracting and retaining new
members that are a bit younger.
Active younger members will
bring new fresh ideas to our Club
that will benefit us all and maybe
even help us stay young.
Member involvement is another
subject that we should stress
throughout this year. As a BYC
member for the past 16 years, it is
easy to state that the most fun and
enjoyment that I have experienced
occurred during the last three years
while actively involved with the
Board. My suggestion is not that
every member be on a committee
or become a board member. What
I am suggesting is that you find
some way to give back to your Club
through participation. You can
help decorate for an entertainment
event, assist the House or Basin
committee on a project, volunteer
to support registration at the
Annual meeting, or participate at
a new member recruiting event. I
guarantee that whatever you do
will both benefit the Club and
will enrich your enjoyment as a
member.
July 2011
Commodore Rick Shaurette
As this year progresses, I look
forward to receiving feedback
from all of our members. It is
your Club and I want to know
what you like, what you don’t
and what new ideas you may
have. If we have not had a chance
to meet yet, please don’t hesitate
to introduce yourself when you
see me. If our paths don’t cross, I
am easily reached via email or by
telephone; both are listed in our
directory. As a final note, I would like to
thank my wife Sydney Shaurette
for her support as I embark on
another year of this wonderful
journey, and offer her my support
as she takes on her role as President
of the Great Mates. We are both
looking forward to our life at the
BYC this year!

Club Manager
Happy New Year! July marks
a new beginning at the BYC, the
beginning of a new fiscal year, the
beginning of Commodore Rick
Shaurette’s term in office, and the
beginning of another long hot summer! I would like
to personally thank our outgoing Board Members,
all of whom have given of themselves to make the
Club better for us all. I would also like to welcome
our incoming Board Members. I am sure they all
have ideas to help us to continue to grow.
Thank you to all of the members who have
supported the Club over the past year; it has been a
great year, full of more ups than downs and, in my
opinion, way more highs than lows. The BYC has
weathered the last several years on a positive note,
even though many Clubs have struggled mightily. It is a testament to the members, the Board, our
Executive Committee and our team of professionals,
all of whom have had a hand on the tiller of the
Club! I am proud to be a part of this team, and I
hope you find your time here at our Club special! Just in time for the warm weather, we have added
more tables, chairs and side tables around the pool. We have seen quite an influx of families using the
pool area; we hope you find the additional furniture
accommodating. It is great to see all of the kids
swimming, diving and enjoying the crystal clear
water. Through the summer, we plan to have a server
poolside for lunch; please come and enjoy a meal
while you swim…this is why we live in paradise.

game will start @ 7:30.

As we start the new fiscal year, so too starts the
new membership year. We will be sending out your
new 2011-2012 Membership Cards; please replace
your outdated card when you get your new one. As
we do every year, we will be stepping up checking
membership cards the first couple of months of the
new year. Don’t forget to get your Dependent Cards
too; let us know if you want cards for your children,
as outlined in the Club’s Rules & Regulations. It is
this time too that we say goodbye to some members
who, for one reason or another, find it necessary to
leave the Club. To you all, we say thank you for your
participation; I hope our individual bearings bring
us together again in the future!
Also in July, we are updating our dinner menu to a
more “warm weather friendly” menu. We will change
out four or five items on the permanent menu, and
the Chef will continue to design great features and
fresh catch entrees for your enjoyment. We aren’t
messing with the lunch menu right now; we have
been told it is a really good mix and, with the daily
lunch bar, there is always something to tickle your
taste buds during the day.
Congratulations to BYC Member Robert Yarish
and Mr. Hubbard who won $200.00 gift certificates
to Dick’s Sporting Goods in our Father’s Day “We
Love Dad” drawing. Both gentlemen enjoyed their
Father’s Day here with us at the Club, Mr. Yarish
for Brunch and Mr. Hubbard for the Patio Daddyo
party.

Fleet Captain Sailing
A few weeks ago, while
launching our J-24, one of our
crew members, Dan Seluk, noticed
a pelican with a hook stuck in its
mouth. The hook was stuck in such
a way that the poor creature could not lift his head
from his chest.
Tom Farmer, BYC’s maintenance supervisor, tried
calling several bird rescue organizations. However,
since it was on a Sunday, no one responded. Jeff
Kohn, BYC’s assistant dock master, said if he had a
cast net he could capture the bird. I then suggested
that he hail one of our fishermen as they pull up to
the wall to dock. In the next few minutes, David
Bailey and his cast net captured the bird. The hook
was removed and the pelican was safely released to
the wild. Good Work Gentlemen!
On Memorial Day, we held a three-race regatta in
the river. Instead of our usual four to five mile race
course, we raced three two mile “sprint” courses. In
one afternoon, we had three starts, and four
spinnaker sets and takedowns. Three weeks of racing
compressed into one afternoon. Our first place boat
was Mischief sailed by Bob Armstrong, second was
Lil Gringo sailed by yours truly and third place was
Swamp Rabbit sailed by Mark Berte.
Speaking of Mischief and Bob Armstrong, Bob
placed first, (spinnaker division), in the Sarasota
Bay Yachting Association Boat of the Year Series.
This was a twenty race series hosted by various
SBYA member clubs (Bayshore Gardens YC, Bird
Key YC, Bradenton YC, Cortez YC, Field Club,
Manatee Sailing Association, Sarasota Bay Singles
Yacht Club, Sarasota Sailing Squadron, Sarasota YC,
Sarasota Youth Sailing, Venice YC, Venice Sailing
Squadron), including BYC’s Kick Off regatta. Over
38 boats competed in the spinnaker division so this
was not an easy event to take top honors in!
Each May, St. Petersburg Yacht Club holds their St.
Petersburg YC to Isla Club de Yates Mexico race. This
year was the 43rd Regatta del Sol al Sol regatta. Two
of our two Club members raced their boats in this
event this year. Christopher Cantalano racing Sweet
Melissa won second place over the entire 22 boat
fleet. Blaise Pierson in Midnight Sun won first place
in the non spinnaker division, eighth place overall.
Entertainment
July begins our new event
schedule. We are easing into our
busy year with our Friday night
special on July 22nd with Name
that Tune. Bring your friends and create your teams
as we compete for a grand prize. Please make
reservations for this evening.
Don’t forget Freaky Tiki Poker will be Sunday, July
17th at 4:00.
The BYC Cookbook is getting ready to go to press. A portion of the proceeds from each book sold
will be donated to Meals on Wheels Plus. At this
time, we are looking for members to be Patrons of
the book that will assist with the initial publishing
costs. We are asking for each Patron to donate $50
and in return you will receive name recognition in

the book along with one free cookbook. Patron
donations may be charged to your Club account
or checks may be sent to the Club to the attention
of Pauldie Howrigan. We thank you all in advance
for your contributions. Once again, I would like to
thank Nancy Christian and her team that consists
of Pauldie Howrigan, Deborah Hastings and Nancy
Schofield for their diligent work on this project. The
books will arrive at the end of October.
Watch for our big August event. It will be a heel
stomping party.
Have a great July 4th and be safe. Don’t forget the
Club is open Monday, July 4th, for some fun family
celebrating.

Fleet Captain Power
As the new incoming Power
Fleet Captain, I personally want
to thank Larry Stanczak and
his wife Maureen for a very
professional and well done job
for the last 18 months heading up the Power Fleet
Captain’s position here at the Bradenton Yacht Club.
Thank you, Larry.
Recap of Extended Cruise from May 11th thru the
22nd:
The Power Fleet cast off for its annual extended
cruise under the capable leadership of Bob and Pat
Wilson. In addition to the Wilsons, participants
included: Barry & Cecelia Allen, Ray & Elayne Barr,
Steve & Emily Brown, Marshal & Jan Couch, Ken &
Jane Hemmelgarn, Arni & Cheryl Nashbar, Craig &
Christa Pop, Jim & Sandy Reschenberg, Fred & Mary
Smith with daughter Pam, Joel & Jo-Ann Stewart, and
Roy & Jackie Woolf. The first port of call was Useppa Island. Thanks
to BYC and Useppa members Ron & Joyce Rowe for
helping us arrange this destination. Dinner at The
Collier Inn on the first night was a great way to start
the trip. After relaxing in this beautiful and private
setting, it was on the water to Naples Sailing & Yacht
Club. This facility is gorgeous after the rebuild that
took place a couple of years ago and the group
enjoyed a dinner there, another at Joe’s Crab Shack,
and watching the annual Naples Canoe Races in the
Gordon River, just outside the club’s harbor.
Unfortunately the weather turned a bit sour and it
was decided that the open water crossing to Hawk’s
Cay, which is normally in the range of four hours, was
not in the cards due to four to five foot seas. Being
flexible and experienced cruisers, the bulk of the
group headed inside to South Seas Plantation, always
a great destination. The Bubble Room welcomed
our crew and the party continued undeterred. Ever
stalwart, the Wilsons concluded the trip with a stay at
Isles Yacht Club.
Upcoming cruise for July: A combined Sail Fleet and Power Fleet cruise to
The Club at Treasure Island, (formerly Treasure
Island Yacht Club), is scheduled for July 15th thru
the 17th. As this is the first joint cruise together in
many, many years here at the Club, let’s make it a big
event. If you have not signed up, there is still room
as we have space for at least 25 boats, (some rafting
required), and have 14+ boats signed up now. If
interested, e-mail me at [email protected] and I will get back to you on the details.

your support, and your friendship will

time and hope you did too. Along the
way we spent 49 nights at 23 ports
and made 41 passages. We really are a
yacht club! Most importantly, we made
memories that will last forever.
I am confident that Ken and Jackie
Sosville will surpass anything we have
been able to do. Changing Watch

Great Mates
The 2010-2011 Great Mates led
by their fantastic Board of Directors:
Jacque Vieira, Lisa Hoban, Pat
Wolcott, Joanne Oakley Stewart
and Janet Amar accomplished another milestone
for our group. Through extensive fundraising and
perseverance they purchased, installed and donated
the Gazebo to the members of the Bradenton Yacht
Cub. This effort is a continuation of the spirit and
talent that has been demonstrated repeatedly since
the “Galley Maids” inception in 1958. I applaud
their efforts! My involvement with the Great Mates began about
11 years ago. As a direct result, I enjoy the friendships
of many talented women and truly feel a part of the
BYC. I am so very proud to be joined by Deborah
Iaboni, Pat Wolcott, Cindy Rhategan and Pam
Burghardt on our Board this year. Over the summer,
we will be scheduling all of the programming for the
year and focus on selecting our Community Outreach
Project for 2011-2012. Have you ever wondered how
the Great Mates select their projects? Whether it is
a local charity or a project to benefit the Club, it all
starts with member input and brainstorming. All BYC members are encouraged to contact
their favorite charity and urge them to send in a
Sydney Shaurette
letter for consideration as our 2011-2012 recipient. Letters should be sent to the Bradenton Yacht Club,
Attention Sydney Shaurette, Great Mates President, 4307 Snead Island Road, Palmetto, FL 34221 and
received no later than August 5, 2011. Interviews will
be conducted with each charity to determine their
primary focus, financial need and funding sources. By the end of our Great Mates meeting on September
15th, our members will select the fortunate charity.
We have raised in excess of $408,242 dollars in just
10 years. Will your favorite charity be next?

Fleet Captain Fishing
A successful 2011 Crosthwait is
now behind us that boasts: the
inaugural Fly Fishing Division,
funds generated for the Annual
Scholarships and two large Blue
Marlin releases that were shown on the big video
screen during the weigh-in. For the first time in over
twenty years, the Fleet Fishing has added a new award. This trophy will recognize the top anglers fishing
tournaments held at the BYC during a calendar year. This year the combined points obtained during the
Crosthwait, Fire Charity and DeSoto tournaments
will determine the winners. Dr. David Fulghum, a past BYC Commodore,
who was responsible for starting the 28-year-old
Crosthwait Memorial Fishing Tournament, passed
away last month. Although his deeds are important
to us, they pale when stacked against his many civic
and humanitarian accomplishments. The Crosthwait
strives to reflect Dr. Fulghum’s ethics and we can be
truly very proud of the legacy left by its founding
father.
Many of the Crosthwait volunteers are finally
getting to fish themselves. I, after many failed
attempts, finally got a tarpon caught on fly up to the
Captain
Mike Reeves
boat for a clean release. It just so happens that it was
also the biggest I have ever caught by a bunch, using
any method. Pile Driver, captained by our Most
Recent Past Commodore, was out about 35 miles
and put a limit of snapper into the cooler along with
several nice grouper. Keeper grouper in summer is not
always easy. They also came back with amberjack,
(get the smoker fired up!), and played tug of war
with a goliath grouper for a while. Mark your Calendar: Two Upcoming Tournaments
July 17–19: The Fire Charity Fishing Tournament,
Weigh-in Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm., (benefiting the
Children’s Burn Foundation)
July 8-10; The DeSoto Tournament, Weigh-in
Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm.
My sincere apologies to anyone offended in any
way by last month’s report by Spike. Inferences may
have been made where I assure you no implication
was deliberate. Perception, I think, is an odd thing;
it often innocently reflects the reader’s mind and not
the writer’s intended meaning. Finding the fun and
seeing the humor in life is forefront in my psyche –
it’s hard wired and not detachable. Power Fleet Cruisers on the Extended Cruise in May.

Sail Cruising Fleet
Our trip to Pasadena YCC was
blessed with the usual weather
– sunny and bright, light to no
wind. We did the gulf route and
threaded the shallows off the tip of
Fort DeSoto, entering at Pass-A-Grill and wandering
up the ICW. The homes surrounding this golf course
community are lush and very interesting. The four
boats which participated even backed into the slips
with the direction of the harbormaster. PYCC offered
great hospitality and wonderful meals on Friday
and Sunday Brunch. The big treat was dinner at the
Peninsula Inn, (a B&B), in Gulfport. The town red
trolley picked us up at the docks and delivered us
back after the dinner and Art Walk.
The July Cruise with the Power Fleet is hot! We’re going to the new The Club at Treasure Island,
formerly TI Yacht and Tennis Club. We have seven
sailboat reservations so far and about the same for
powerboats. We haven’t set a limit yet but, as we try
to plan for dinner events for nearly 30 people, we’re
going to run out of space. Since there is no fee for

Captain
Jack Gorman
We will have our BYC dinner on Wed., July 13;
order off the menu, starting at 6:30. In addition
to discussing future plans, we are planning to have
a learning session on using charting and planning
software. The programs make use of the free
download NOAA charts. If you bring your laptop,
you can load working “sample” software and my
collection of Gulf charts to try out this great, at-home
planning tool. We are planning a trip to Clearwater in August and
will have more facts at the meeting. September still
looks like Venice or The Field Club.
