DOC HEIDE Co-Founder / Playwright / Performer Doc has performed on the Peninsula State Park stage since 1973. He is co-author of 20 shows including Belgians in Heaven and Packer Fans from Outer Space (both with Lee Becker and James Kaplan), and Guys & Does (with Lee Becker and Paul Libman). This spring, Doc and Lee wrote a third draft of their forthcoming Belgians prequel, tentatively titled Hell’s Belgians. Among Doc’s three CD’s is Christmas in Door County with Eric Lewis. Doc’s new studio band, Zen of Thieves, has just released its first iTunes single, Better Angels, with lead vocal by Claudia Russell. Doc serves as professor at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in San Francisco. He’s also associate editor of the APA journal PsycCRITIQUES (formerly The APA Review of Books) and has penned many articles in cryptic professional journals. This year he’ll be on sabbatical, writing various projects and skiing remote black diamond slopes with his beloved wife Jody. THANK YOU The authors of Guys & Does sincerely thank the Wisconsin deer hunters who shared their deep knowledge of the sport: Willard, Brian, Bruce, and Sally Zak of Door County, Reed Romens of Pittsville, and Bob and Mark Tuttle of Nekoosa. These individuals, following in the footsteps of countless generations, demonstrate that the tradition of honoring the game that will nourish us remains vital to this day. 2 Northern Sky Theater Book & Lyrics by Frederick Heide & Lee Becker Music by Paul Libman Director & Choregrapher Jeffrey Herbst Music Director Ryan Cappleman Stage Manager Neen Rock* Musical Arrangements Colin Welford Assistant Stage Managers Dan Klarer and Shawn Galligan Scenic Designer Jim Maronek Lighting & Sound Designer David Alley Costume & Props Designer Kathleen Rock PLEASE NOTE: All guns have been disabled and are incapable of firing. He has worked on over fifty original productions with Northern Sky since 1991, including Guys on Ice, Lumberjacks in Love, Packer Fans from Outer Space, and Bone Dance. Jeff was instrumental in developing Northern Sky’s New Works Program and the Fred Alley New Musical Fund, nurturing writing teams in bringing an original work “from the page to the stage.” Jeff has an MFA in Acting from the Asolo Conservatory and has performed on and off Broadway, as well as at regional theatres throughout the United States. After winning the Richard Rodgers Award twice for two different musicals with collaborator Dave Hudson, Paul relocated to New York, where he currently is a member of the Lehman Engel BMI Advanced Musical Theatre Workshop. He is also the creator, arranger and producer of the hit comedy CD, Oy to the World! A Klezmer Christmas. Now, having had eight successfully produced musicals, he continues to write with Dave Hudson and others. This year, Paul is especially excited about his and Dave’s new Northern Sky musical, Naked Radio, slated for a fall 2017 premiere. DOUG MANCHESKI Performer Doug has acted with Northern Sky Theater for several years. In fact, this is his 20th summer. His many favorite shows include Guys on Ice, Fool Me Once, Loose Lips Sink Ships, Cabin with a View, Muskie Love, and many others. Neen Rock has designed and constructed costumes, sets and props for numerous shows starting in the later years of the Heritage Ensemble. She has served as Northern Sky’s Production Stage Manager for their summer and fall seasons since that position was created. In Northern Sky’s off-season, Neen resides in Madison where she works as a freelance stage manager and a member of IATSE Local 251. Neen wishes to thank her family and Brian for their constant love and support. She dedicates this season to Joan and Bill, with love. SHAWN GALLIGAN Assistant Stage Manager Shawn has acted, directed, and stage managed throughout the Midwest. In addition to being a company member here at Northern Sky, Shawn is lucky enough to be a company member with Interrobang Theatre Project, The Side Project, and Actors’ Summit. He also served a few years as the company stage manager for Chicago Tap Theater. When not at the theater, you’ll often find him behind a board game or on a bike. DAN KLARER Assistant Stage Manager This year marks ten years since Dan started working for Northern Sky Theater. He is excited to be back in wonderful Door County after finishing his master’s degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. While in Glasgow, Dan worked with several theaters including Bard in the Botanics. Dan was recently seen in Isaac’s Eye at Third Avenue Playhouse. He has also been working with Door Shakespeare this summer in various capacities including teaching at Doorways kids camp. Dan was recently made an associate instructor with Dueling Arts International and teaches stage combat when not performing around the midwest. 6 Northern Sky Theater DAVID ALLEY Technical Director / Lighting Designer David is happy to be back for another great season of theater under the stars. David is excited to be part of Northern Sky, continuing to oversee technical operations as he has for the past 25 years. He has been the theater’s resident lighting designer since 1990. Outside of Northern Sky, David works as a live sound and recording engineer in addition to doing lighting and sound design work for other local theatres. Enjoy the show! STEWART DAWSON Head Carpenter Once again, I am astounded beyond any semblance of belief that Northern Sky has asked me back again to be their Resident (albeit, innocent) Bystander. Although this is a talent that I have become very good at over the years, and is an indispensible position, it is always a privilege and an honor to feel personally wanted and needed. Also, I’m a blame-free zone. In my copious amounts of spare time, I am developing my writing skills and hope that someday soon you all will be able to say, “Yeah, I read that...” Have a great time tonight and have a wonderful fall! JIM MARONEK Scenic Designer Jim has designed scenery for at least ten AFT productions, he thinks, as well as their new permanent stage. He has designed maybe thirty sets for the Peninsula Players since he began his career there in 1950. He is now on their Board of Directors and helped to replace their theatre, which was nearly as old and creaky as he. His other local work includes designing The Christmas Schooner and An Enemy of the People at the Door County Auditorium. Otherwise, he operates his fine art gallery at Silver Poplar Studios in Ellison Bay, along with Russian cottage rentals, with his wife, Carole. His credits, including The Goodman Theatre in Chicago, number over 250 designs, some of which have been exhibited internationally. He is Professor Emeritus of The Theatre School of DePaul University. NorthernSkyTheater.com 7 A Note from the Authors of Guys & Does Book & Lyrics by Frederick Heide & Lee Becker Music by Paul Libman We are all hunters. We hunt for bargains, for jobs, for apartments. But only about 5% of us still hunt deer. That’s pretty amazing when you consider that hunting was once the biggest thing that ever happened to our species. The automobile, the TV, and the computer have all been important for a few decades. But we invented hunting at least 100,000 years ago. We can only imagine the party our ancestors threw for the guys who finally figured out how to pull it off. Think of it: we could now address three of our most basic needs---food, clothing, and shelter--in a single act. It’s understandable that we call early versions of ourselves hunter-gatherers. Or that the first recorded human creations are cave paintings of hunted animals. Or that our predecessors named constellations after hunters like Orion. Many human pursuits have value--logging, for example---but you won’t find a constellation called Louie the Lumberjack. These days we don’t need to hunt to eat. Indeed, people would look at you strangely if you said you had to go grocery-hunting. That’s because the word hunting implies that what you’re seeking is hard to obtain. You shop for Cheerios. You can’t shop for deer. They won’t cooperate. And that very challenge is what makes hunting so exquisitely rewarding for those who carry on this ancient practice. Guys & Does is about guys who value hunting as well as something else that can be hard to obtain: a satisfying connection with family. Eighty percent of Wisconsin hunters do so with family members. And each character in our show is pursuing family in his own way. We hope you’ll enjoy watching them pursue it. After all, there are some things we will always find worth hunting.
