President’s
Letter
Dear Friend
of The Four Arts:
Has it occurred to you
that what we’re doing
together at The Four Arts may
have national significance?
America’s population
is changing. As the Baby
Boomers cross into their
retirement years, the nation’s
median age skews older. Because the Baby Boomers
have been highly successful, this older cohort will be
relatively more affluent than preceding generations.
Healthier, too. In short, the rest of the nation will
experience what’s familiar here in Palm Beach:
active, affluent older adults with time to enjoy the
finer things.
It’s a good bet that lifelong learning will become
more important as vigorous new retirees demand
not only golf courses, cruises and retirement homes,
but cultural and educational growth, as well:
concerts. exhibitions, and well-stocked libraries;
opportunities to learn about opera, Shakespeare or
watercolor painting.
And where is there a good working model
for this sort of enjoyable lifelong learning? Right
here.
As I write, our energy and momentum at
The Four Arts are shifting toward acquiring and
renovating the old Palm Beach Public School
Building. In just a few years, this building— newly
renovated, with its multiple classrooms and intimate
auditorium— will become the Fitz Eugene Dixon
Education Building, headquarters for our growing
Campus on the Lake.
Along with our other offerings, the Campus
on the Lake will serve as a larger, more vital center
for learning here in Palm Beach. It will stand also
as model for other communities seeking to expand
opportunities for their energetic, curious, affluent
Boomers.
It’s happening because of your support.
Many thanks!
Film Series Begins January 4 with
“Curse of the Golden Flower”
A
rtistic films whose niche appeal might have meant an
early box office demise will get a second chance at The
Society of the Four Arts as part of the Four Arts Friday Film
Series. Eleven films are scheduled for this season, beginning

Tickets are $3 and available at the door. Unless otherwise
noted, films are shown at 2:30, 5:15 and 8 p.m.

the Rebel” (January 27) and “The Rotund World of Fernando
Botero” (February 10) both shown with the exhibit “The
Baroque World of Fernando Botero,” which opens on January
19. On April 6, “Portrait of an Artist: Raoul Dufy” will be
shown in support of the exhibit “Raoul Dufy: A Celebration
of Beauty” which opens at The Four Arts on March 8.
For more information on films at The Society of the Four
Arts, call (561) 655-7226 or visit www.fourarts.org.

Memory Not What It Used to Be?
Mark your Calendar for Special
Florida Voices Presentation
F
or anyone who has gone to another room, only to arrive
with no idea why, Cathryn Ramin’s lighthearted January
9th presentation at the King Library will surely strike a chord.
Her new book, Carved in Sand explores the memory issues
faced by so many. In this presentation, Ramin will share her
experiences as a self-appointed guinea pig and representative
of middle-aged people whose minds have been behaving
unnervingly. Her funny and revealing story is proof that
forgetfulness does not have to ruin your life.
The presentation takes place at 6 p.m. and a book signing
will follow. Tickets are free and are available one week in
advance at The King Library reception desk. Call (561) 6552766 for more details.

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana
Promises a Spicy Evening
of Latin Dance
L
atin dance group Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana will perform
at The Society of the Four Arts on February 20 at 8 p.m.
The group is known for the unique and creative way
in which it has
enriched the
art of flamenco.
The company
has actively
encouraged the
creativity and
innovation of
young artists
from both Spain
and the U.S.
while keeping
faithful to the
powerful traditions of flamenco. In addition to performance
and the commissioning of new works, the group’s mission
of bridging cultures using the spirit of flamenco is achieved
through extensive community outreach, exciting arts-ineducation programs and powerful performances for diverse
audiences.
In addition to its intensive curriculum based in-school
residency programs, the company has created unique pieces
such as Amigos Españoles, featuring a young person’s
journey through Spain, and, in conjunction with Lincoln
Center Institute, Inesperanza a story of life’s difficulties told
through the art of flamenco. Tickets are $35 (balcony) or $40
(orchestra) and will be available to the public on January 23
by calling (561) 655-7226 or visiting the box office in the
Esther B. O’Keeffe gallery building.
Turtle Island String Quartet
with Stefon Harris
to honor “The Divine Duke”
T
he Turtle Island String Quartet will return to the Four Arts
concert schedule in 2008, appearing on February 6 with
jazz vibraphonist Stefon Harris, for a performance inspired by
the work of Duke Ellington.
Stefon Harris has been heralded as “one of the most
important young artists in jazz” (The Los Angeles Times). Widely
recognized and
lauded by both
his peers and
jazz critics alike,
the 30 year-old
is committed to
both exploring the
rich potential of
jazz composition
and blazing new
trails on the
vibraphone.
The Turtle Island String Quartet returns
after a critically acclaimed performance at
The Four Arts last season. The group
fuses the classical quartet esthetic with
contemporary American musical styles,
resulting in a refreshingly unusual take on
jazz string music.
Tickets for the Turtle Island String
Quartet with Stefon Harris will go on sale
to the public on January 23. Orchestra
level seats are $40 and balcony seats are $35. For tickets visit
The Four Arts box office or call (561) 655-7226.

“T
he Baroque World of Fernando Botero” will
open on Saturday, January 19. The exhibit
includes painting and sculptures in Botero’s
trademark style, known for depicting the comedy
of human life from an often mocking but always
emotional point of view. Fernando Botero has spent
most of his years as an artist away from his native
country, Colombia, but his art has maintained an
uninterrupted link to Latin America.
Drawn from the collection of the artist and
assembled over the last fifty years, the show includes
favorite works that Botero was unable to part with,
as well as pieces reacquired years after they left his
possession. Many have never before been exhibited.

Monumental
Apple Basket Returns
to the Garden
“M
onumental Apple Basket,” a colorful
sculpture by Luis Montoya and Leslie Oritz
has been restored and installed in the Pannill
Pavilion of The Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden. The
bronze sculpture features green and red apples stacked
in a wicker basket, and when placed on its base, stands
nearly six feet tall. Its restoration comes one decade after
it was originally donated to The Society of the Four Arts
by Mrs. Philip Hulitar.
Placing the sculpture in the Pavilion ensures it will
be protected from the sun which faded the finish in the
past. All sculptures in the Philip Hulitar Sculpture garden
are regularly maintained by a sculpture specialist, who
cleans them monthly and applies special coatings to
maintain their appearance.
The Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden is open daily from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no charge for admission. For
more information, call (561) 655-7227.

CAMPUS ON THE LAKE
Former Health Czar to
Discuss “High Society”
T
he February 28 Campus on the Lake lecture will feature
Joseph Califano, Jr. author of High Society—How
Substance Abuse Ravages America and What To Do About It,
a book that illustrates how substance abuse is the culprit in
violent and property crime, soaring Medicare and Medicaid
costs, family breakups, domestic violence, the spread
of AIDS, teen pregnancy, poverty, and low productivity.
M r.
Califano
challenges alcohol and
tobacco interests that buy
political protection with
campaign contributions
and create a culture of
substance abuse among
our nation’s children and
teens. In both his book and
his lecture, he explains
the importance of parent
power and proposes
revolutionary changes in
prevention, treatment,
and criminal justice.
Mr. Califano served
strati
the Johnson administration
n as domestic affairs chief
and was Jimmy Carter’s secretary of Health, Education,
and Welfare, where he started the nation’s first national
anti-smoking campaign in 1978, calling cigarette smoking
“Public Health Enemy Number One.” Mr. Califano is founding
Chairman of the Board and President of The National Center
on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia
University, an independent non-profit research center
which has mounted demonstration programs involving all
substances at more than 159 sites in 66 cities and counties
in 29 states.
This event is free and open to the public. For reservations,
call (561) 805-8562.
New Lighting, Furnishings
Will Restore Classic Look to
Four Arts King Library
T
he Four Arts King Library is undergoing a renovation
project, funded solely donations from library supporters
and proceeds from book sales.
Draperies that had been in
place for more than 40 years
have been replaced, and
fluorescent lighting in the
main reading room is being
removed in favor of more
subtle lighting styles that
complement the architecture
of the building.
“Consideration for the soul
and style of the building is
foremost in every decision. I
have a picture of the Officers
and Directors of The Society
from 1944. There is a Miznerstyle chandelier overhead.
If it was here then, it
would seem appropriate to
such as this one,
have them here now,” said Chandeliers
which hangs in the stairway on
library director Molly Charland. the second floor, will replace
In addition to chandeliers, dated fluorescent lighting.
uplighting will be installed
around the perimeter of the reading room, and floor lamps
are expected to be added.
This is the first renovation project the library has
undertaken in more than a decade. After completing the
lighting phase, Charland hopes to raise funds for much needed
repairs to the ceiling on the second floor of the library, which
is deteriorating due to age.
The Four Arts King Library is open to the public and serves
as the town library of Palm Beach. Borrowing privileges can be
obtained for a small annual fee and the library offers a variety
of presentations and classes to the community.

contact the King Library at (561) 655-2766.
Four Arts Receives Grant to Repair Roof
T
he Esther B. O’Keeffe Foundation
announced in December that it would
underwrite the cost to replace the roof
of the Esther B. O’Keeffe Gallery Building
at The Society of the Four Arts. Work
began on the project this summer and
will continue into the fall of 2008.
The roof replacement is just one of
a series of projects The Four Arts has
undertaken to improve the grounds and
ensure the safety of its patrons. A new
wheelchair accessible ramp was installed
on the front of the O’Keeffe Gallery
“Our cup runneth over! The O’Keeffe
family’s continuing generosity is a
blessing to The Four Arts and an
example to others. We are once again
profoundly grateful.”

Building during the past summer, and in
December new lighting to spotlight palm
trees and mark curbs and driveways was
installed on the main lawn.
The King Library also received new
lighting to the front of the building,
which will make the building safer
for patrons who visit in the evenings.
Installation of generators for all Four Arts
buildings is expected to be completed in
the first half of 2008.
