2O16/17 - University of Chicago Presents
2O16/17
SEASON
EXTRAORDINARY
PERFORMANCES
Join UChicago Presents for a season of extraordinary performances,
where you connect with premier artists from around the globe. Whether
returning to our stages, like the Pacifica Quartet, or making their Chicago
debut, such as Baroque orchestra Apollo’s Fire and Imani Winds, the
University’s new resident ensemble, these artists offer committed
and soul-satisfying performances.
Along with the artists, programs take a starring role. This season, music
and words intertwine at center stage, as the two are voiced throughout our
series in captivating programs offered by extraordinary artists and writers:
Freddy Cole’s gorgeous baritone meets chanteuse René Marie’s
powerfully emotional vocals in a collaboration titled He Said/She Said.
The astounding vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth explores issues of race
with words of black writers and poets in white composer Ted Hearne’s
Coloring Book.
Sandrine Piau sings French and German songs in her Chicago
recital debut.
Salman Rushdie reads from his novel, The Enchantress of Florence, to
music written for the esteemed American String Quartet.
Extra offerings enhance the concerts, including pre-concert lectures by
UChicago scholars. Events unique to this season are a film screening on
the life of jazz pianist Fred Hersch and a book group discussion around
Salman Rushdie’s novel in connection to his appearance with the American
String Quartet.
From chamber ensembles to jazz and medieval to contemporary music,
UChicago Presents offers the variety of the world’s most exceptional artists
and intriguing music—right here in Chicago. Don’t miss a note!

When thinking about the musical life of
Medieval monks, Gregorian chant comes to

Christian, as they incorporated writings of
Roman authors and thinkers, such as Homer
and Horace, and the deeply moving poems
of Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy.
