Back to the Roots - zurück zu den Anfängen - heißt es dabei nicht nur für „Stirb
Langsam“-Fans, sondern für Freunde von Bruce Willis-Filmen insgesamt. Denn mit
„Stirb Langsam“ erlebte er unter der Regie von John McTiernan seinen großen
Durchbruch als Action-Star in Hollywood. In „Stirb Langsam“ gerät er als einfacher
Cop unfreiwillig in die Rolle des Retters und Rächers: Eine Bande von Terroristen
hat einen ganzen Wolkenkratzer in ihre Gewalt gebracht, um eine gigantische
Geldsumme zu erbeuten. Das nimmt der Polizist John McClane persönlich, denn
unter den Geiseln befindet sich seine Frau Holly. Vor deren Befreiung haben die
Drehbuchautoren jede Menge Schweiß, Glasscherben und explosive Action gesetzt.
Belohnt wurde der ebenso spannende wie selbstironische Kampf McClanes mit vier
Oscar®-Nominierungen.
Dass weder der Erfolg des Films noch der von Bruce Willis Zufallstreffer waren,
zeigte sich 1990 mit der Fortsetzung „Stirb Langsam 2“, bei der Renny Harlin Regie
führte. Wie schon beim ersten Mal, hofft John McClane einfach nur auf ein ruhiges
Weihnachtsfest mit seiner Frau. Doch diesmal stört ein Trupp schurkischer Söldner
den Familienfrieden: Er besetzt einen Flughafen und droht damit,
Passagiermaschinen zum Absturz zu bringen. Pech für die Finsterlinge, dass Holly
unter den bedrohten Fluggästen ist, denn das ruft natürlich den coolsten Cop in der
Geschichte des Actionfilms auf den Plan.
Auch in „Stirb Langsam: Jetzt erst recht“ erweist sich John McClane wieder einmal
als der richtige „falsche Kerl, am falschen Ort, zur falschen Zeit“. Für den dritten,
1994 gedrehten Teil der Reihe, kehrte nicht nur John McTiernan auf den Regiestuhl,
sondern auch der Terror ins Leben des Cops zurück. Der Bruder des Oberschurken
aus Teil 1 droht eine Schule in die Luft zu sprengen und liefert sich mit John
McClane eine explosive Hetzjagd zu Lande, zu Wasser und in der Luft.
Wer die Vorgeschichte von „Stirb Langsam 4.0“ samt aller Running Gags der
Filmreihe kennt, wird den neuen Kinofilm erst richtig genießen können.

resurgence of the long-lost Anastasia also attracts the
attention of the scary Rasputin (Christopher Lloyd), who,
with his hilarious sidekick, Bartok the bat (Hank Azaria),
schemes to do in the last Romanov. Though much lighter
(thankfully for children) than the 1956 Anatole Litvakdirected ANASTASIA adapted from Marcelle Maurette’s
play, this movie is still packed with thrills, chills, and
romance. The first animated feature from 20th Century
Fox, the film is directed by longtime collaborators Don
Bluth and Gary Goldman.

The pixel-happy production company Blue Sky follows its
successful feature ICE AGE with more animated antics in
ROBOTS. Rodney Copperbottom (voiced by Ewan
McGregor) is a talented inventor who hopes to make his
fortune by moving to Robot City and working among the
nuts and bolts of the robotics industry. Rodney fantasizes
about building robots for his boyhood hero and master
inventor Big Weld (Mel Brooks), but when he meets him,
Rodney’s dream threatens to turn rusty. Big Weld reveals
that his company is now being run by the evil Phineas T.
Ratchet (Greg Kinnear), a merciless moneymaker who
wants to rid the world of the antiquated robots that clutter
up the streets of Robot City. This leaves Rodney’s
aspirations needing a major oil change, and with little
chance of finding work, he feels about as useful as a
broken spare part. So he takes to the streets, where he
finds some unlikely salvation in a group of robots lead by
Fender (Robin Williams). Fender urges Rodney to help

soldiers of F-Troop at Fort Courage in the days following
the Civil War. Led by Captain Parmenter, a naive and

incompetent best to survive in the lawless frontier. Making
things easier, Parmenter ’s second-in-command, the crafty
Sgt. O’Rourke, negotiates a deal with the local Hekawi
Indians in which the cavalry and the Indians stage mock
battles, but actually work together in a mutually profitable
Indian souvenir business. The true threat to F-Troop
comes from the warlike „Shug“ Indians who periodically
raid the fort. Bringing a bit of sexpot appeal to the show,
sharp-shooting cowgirl Wrangler Jane strives to marry the
innocent Captain Parmenter. A lighthearted send-up of the
Western genre, F-TROOP, with its irreverent anti-authority
attitude, showed its ties to the sixties counterculture, and
acted as a precursor to the megahit M*A*S*H.
A futuristic fable comparable to George Orwell’s 1984,
FURIA offers a bleak peek into humankind’s possible fate.
The future government has obliterated any political
opposition by shutting them down, as well as reigning in
creative pursuits such as art and music. Aaron (Pierre
Vaneck) is a local bartender who can only see in monochrome after an operation inflicted on him by government
drones; he was assigned to this fate after being caught
painting. His two sons, Theo (Stanislas Merhar) and
Laurence (Wadek Stanczak) couldn’t be more different
from each other. Laurence works for the oppressive
government forces, while Theo takes on his father’s
mantle and actively defies the rules by painting on any
public surface he can find. Teaming up with fellow rebel,
Elia (Marion Cotillard), Theo sets about decorating the
city, and slowly falling in love with Elia. But with
government minions everywhere they are soon in big
trouble, leading to a tense finale to director Alexander
Aja’s all-consuming drama.

Colonel Mortimer (Lee Van Cleef) in order to extract
reward money from Indio (Gian Maria Volonte), a mean
and vicious bandit. There is little doubt as to No Name’s
financial intentions in the hunt, but Mortimer seems to be
driven by something a bit deeper. A series of flashbacks
(which would become a Leone signature device) provides
the background for Colonel Mortimer ’s anger and desire
for revenge. Morricone’s score combined with Leone’s
trademark long and lingering shots bring the viewer ever
closer to the human side of the Man with No Name.
Although the film was not released in the United States
until 1967, it was produced and released internationally in
1965.

easier: they’re caught in a battle with a group of
neighborhood bullies over a tree house that they built out
of junk to be a safe haven for their friends, while trying to
escape the pressures of school and life in a small

what finally help Stephen come to terms with the larger

the stranger attempts to harm the professor. But Wanley
defends himself by stabbing his attacker, who, it turns out,
is a famous financial promoter. The professor and the
model then cover up the crime by dumping the body in the
woods. The police eventually do find out about the death,
and they start an investigation; meanwhile, the professor
tries desperately to figure out a way out of this mess.

The film explores the mating rituals of the emperor

Into Great Silence
INTO GREAT SILENCE fits neatly into the sub-category of
films that need to be experienced rather than just
watched. Over 162 minutes director Philip Groening films
a group of monks who dwell in the Carthusian monastery
of the Grande Chartreuse in the French Alps. The monks
have taken a vow of silence, and live life at such a gentile
pace that it took them 13 years to respond to Groening’s
request to make a film about them. The subjects of
Groening’s film fill their days with slow and highly
repetitive routines, so the director shoots at a suitably
slow pace, highlighting simple tasks such as praying,
gardening, cooking, and doing laundry. Groening lived
with the monks for four months and worked under strict
conditions dictated to him by the order; no voiceover,
music, or interviews were to be included in the film, and
Groening was to be the sole crew member on the shoot.
There are a couple of moments when Groening breaks
with his modus operandi. He interviews an elderly blind
monk, the Gregorian Chants practiced by the order
occasionally feature, and the monks stage a snowball
fight on one of their week
