Nowadays, both compact and
SLR cameras can do things like
take shots, process them, and
send them out into the world. But
despite their increased production
over the years, some say they are
recently on the decline due to the
influx of smartphones. Veteran
engineers from various companies
poured forth about the current
situation and ideal situation for
cameras going forward, as well as
technological developments.

Special Exhibition Enhancing Beauty—the World of Art Prints February 13 (Thu) to 16 (Sun) Venue: Inside Exhibition Hall
With primary support from participants
in the new “Photo Print Media Zone,”
we showcased beautiful art prints made
possible only by this industry. At a time
when photographs are increasingly
remaining on computers and cell phones
and being shared on SNS, this exhibition
extolled the virtues of the quintessence of
photographs—printing, holding onto, and
enjoying pictures—and their beauty in line
with this year’s theme.
The Video Area and video-related events were held to comprehensively introduce video solutions, centered on SLR cameras which are in increasing demand,
for professional photographers.

Japan-France Photo Cultural Exchange LES ZOOMS Special Exhibition February 13 (Thu) to 16 (Sun) Venue: Inside Exhibition Hall
Put on by Salon de la Photo, a photo and
camera event in France, LES ZOOMS is a
photography contest aimed at uncovering
and developing up-and-coming
photographers by having leading photo
magazine editors take a place among the
judges. This event exhibited the works
of two winners from the general voting
division and editor division in 2013, Mr.
Jérôme Blin and Mr. Romain Laurendeau.

—SLR Movie Shooting Guide for Still Camera Photographers
I Just Want to Take Some Cool Videos!
—Experiences with Creating Video from a Young Photographer
Katsuwo (Photographer)
SLR movies are widely used in films and TV
commercials, but photographers are having
a hard time achieving results with the same
methods. By focusing on what photographers
excel at, and beginning from still photography for
both equipment and technique, photographers
can move into the world of video without a hitch.
This session invited Hiroshi Shikano, who has
conducted numerous video-related seminars,
to provide an SLR movie shooting guide for still
photographers.
There are tons of photographers who love
movies and want to take a bunch of cool videos.
Regardless of age or career length, they will no
doubt get their chance someday if their passion
focuses on just getting some neat video. Through
this session, Katsuwo, a young photographer
working in both photography and video, talked
about his experience with creating video.

The Front Line for High-Quality Video
—From 4K High-Definition Video to Video Retouching and Working with RAW Video Data
Yasuhiro Yasutomo (Photographer) and
Ryuichi Kataoka (Representative, VONS pictures ) and
Shinya Kojima (Photographer)
Souya Ohsato (Chief CG Designer, VONS pictures)
In the world of the Web and e-books, pictures and video are
equally important visual elements. To address new demand for
those wanting us to take both pictures and video at the same
time, it is much more advantageous for photographers to team
up into a unit instead of one going it alone. Through experiences
discussed by Yasuhiro Yasutomo and Shinya Kojima, whose
video creation unit goes by the name of Videographers Online,
participants learned about a new style of working with video,
with information about topics such as the merits of forming units,
assigning roles when shooting, and matching colors across
multiple cameras.
It has already been five years since professionals
began taking SLR movies with video as beautiful as a
photograph. The world of commercial production now
requires video that exceeds even this level. In this
session, cutting edge image technology experts VONS
pictures focused on the “Front Line for High-Quality
Video” in talking about 4K high-definition imaging, video
retouching, making parts of pictures move like a video
with cinema graphs, using RAW video data that allows
for flexible color adjustment after shooting, and more.
As a weekend-only special event, Photo
Accessory Outlet was organized for CP+
exhibitors in order to promote the sales of
photo accessories.

LES ZOOMS Special Panel Discussion
Along with the two winners from the general voting division and editor division
in LES ZOOMS 2013, photo magazine editors involved in selecting the works
came to Japan. Joined by Mr. Monterosso, himself a judge at the first LES
ZOOMS, the panelists had planned to talk on everything from the history of the
contest to the perspectives of the two photographers and the current state of
the photography industry in France, as seen from various standpoints.

It has been said for a long time that there would one day
be no border between photography and video, and now a
wide variety of models blurring this line have been released
from manufacturers. Thus, the special Video Area was set
up in the exhibition hall as a trial to introduce all aspects of
the latest video solutions, including DSLR videos, of course,
movie cameras that take advantage of the descriptive
capability of photographic lenses, editing software, and
peripherals to enhance directing.

How to Create Videos Using Multiple Cameras
Shiro Yoshizawa (Photographer)
Videos recording ballets, piano concerts, and live performances
are shot using multiple cameras; therefore such works have been
supplied exclusively by video creation service suppliers. However,
if photographers can also shoot videos, imaginably they can take
on more of such requests. This seminar introduced photographers
to the creation of multi-camera videos with as less equipment and
investment as possible.

• I want to bring the digital photo data from new products home, in order to look at it afterward. (Male, 20s)
• I wasn’t able to actually touch new products, as so many people were waiting in line. It would be helpful if the manufacturers could increase the number of products on exhibit. (Male, 40s)
• It would have been nice to have more space to try out cameras and lenses, along with brief lectures on how to shoot what I want using those lenses and cameras. (Male, 50s)
• I would like to see the overall enhancement of the exhibition, such as improvements in layout and display, considering the flow of people in the hall. (Female, 40s)
• It may be better if cameras released in the past were also exhibited. (Male, 40s)
• It seemed to me that the venue of the seminars was a little too small. I spent too much time waiting in line and could not attend very many seminars over the course of a day. I would hope for more seminars where you can
register beforehand, thus allowing you to visit many seminars more efficiently. (Male, 50s)
• I could tour the entire event without too much problem because the time for the event was extended to 6 p.m. I wish that the Photo Accessory Outlet could be held on Friday, too. (Female, 30s)
• I hope that the event could focus on not only seeing products, but also for actually touching them and checking them out up close. (Male, 30s)
• I am interested in components and technologies. In addition to complete products, I would like to see a lot more exhibitions for such, including lenses, sensors, displays, shutters, and technologies. (Male, 40s)
• I think it would be very interesting if there were some campaigns that included product giveaways. Or, holding polls in which visitors vote for what they liked the most in various categories, such as DSLRs and tripods, could
be a fun way to provide users with information on popular models! (Male, 30s)
• Exhibitors should provide their staff with more expertise. I was disappointed when I heard many replies of, “I don’t know,” to my questions. (Female, 30s)
• Exhibitors should provide staff that can provide more detailed explanations, including comparisons with competitors. I was disappointed when I asked one of them something and then heard “I don’t know.” (Male, 40s)
• This year, I felt that the event was more open and fun compared to last year. I would like to see more events and photo contests, that even beginners and amateur photographers can enjoy. (Female, 20s)
• I liked the fact that users could test the exhibited cameras using their own SD cards. It was so interesting for me to test cameras that I have little chance to use. Other manufacturers should provide such a service. (Male, 50s)
• My motivation for visiting CP+ is to see new technologies and new products. I would expect that exhibitors make further efforts for this in the future. (Male, 60s)
• I thought that many of the exhibitors’ staff members were simply salespersons. They were so kind in explaining their new products, but were a little weak in their technical explanations. (Male, 40s)
• The event should use a larger hall, somewhere that exhibitors could be set up larger booths. Product categories should be shown more clearly. (Male, 50s)
• I think that some space for consulting about the entire product line—not only the new products—of each manufacturer would be cool. (Male, 30s)
• Exhibitors should show photographs as the results of using their products, in order to make their exhibition more convincing. The users’ objectives are photographs. Exhibitions showing none of such objectives do not lead
users to choose their hardware. (Male, 50s)
• I could not understand some seminars at the booths. It would be clearer for visitors if there was some announcement on classifications, such as “For beginners,” “For intermediate users,” and “For advanced users.” Some
manufacturers were giving seminars on similar subjects, and it would be more convenient for us if such seminars are categorized to avoid overlaps. (Male, 20s)

■ About exhibition subjects and content
• I want this exhibition to put forward more suggestions on creating things and other matters using cameras. They should develop topics involving both the creation of things and the creation of things and other matters.” I
expect that this event will become a place for both manufacturers and users to discover new values through each other. (Male, 40s)
• I would like to see exhibitions by companies that may not even be camera manufacturers, as they might be able to suggest new uses/functions for cameras that others may not consider. (Male, 20s)
• I would like to see more seminars on image processing. (Male, 60s)
• It would be fun if more of the latest product information could be presented at this event. (Male, 40s)
• I would like to see more exhibitions on video. It also would be great if more studio and outdoor shooting-related equipment are exhibited. (Male, 20s)
• The camera is one of the few advantages left for Japan among the precision instrument/electronics industries. I hope that Japanese industry can keep demonstrating its strength to the world. (Male, 50s)
• It would be interesting if there was a theme that could help enhance the position of still cameras in the field of video. (Male, 40s)
• I enjoyed some hand-on events and booths for free-of-charge photo printing and shooting. I would like to see many services involving printing on high-grade paper and panels, which we cannot use so frequently, and to see
photos shot by professional photographers. (Female, 30s)
• I would like to see more products that show or store photos, such as photo books, mounts, and albums. (Female, 40s)
• It seems to me that this event has become just a place to show off new products and shoot photos. I would like them to push something that only CP+ can do. (Male, 40s)
• Compared with last year, I could feel a tendency toward digital photography this year. I would hope that all exhibitors could provide information on such macroscopic themes. (Male, 50s)
• I see many Japanese high-tech manufacturers at CP+. I want CP+ to become more of an international event, like the Tokyo Motor Show, which could inform the world on the many new World Premiere products and state-ofthe-art technologies. (Male, 50s)
• I want the event to become a place where one can obtain information on newer imaging equipment and where we could have more opportunity to see and touch some devices that cannot yet be seen in the market. (Male, 40s)
• I feel that CP+ will continue to be an event that delivers the fun of photography, however I would like to see more information for professionals and advanced amateurs. I would be happy if there was a place or booth that sold
books on cameras from various publishers, regardless of whether they are specialized in photography or not. (Male, 50s)
■ About measures to satisfy beginners and female visitors
• I would like to see more seminars for women and seminars by female photographers. I hope for seminars and workshops under the theme of indoor shooting, such as that for cuisine, flowers, and sweets. (Female, 20s)
• Cameras are one area where Japan leads the technological pack. I would like to see events at CP+ that would allow women who are not good with technology feel more at home. (Female, 40s)
• The exhibition of apps and services related to photos and videos taken using smartphones would be fun. This should appeal more to young women. (Female, 30s)
• In addition to exhibitions by the respective manufacturers, some categorized areas based on the attributes of visitors such as “young female photographers” may be helpful if they are put up around the hall. (Female, 30s)
• The booths are filled with men to an excessive degree. This is uncomfortable for women. I would be happy if there is some place to show not only cameras but also accessories for women. (Female, 20s)
• I think it is more interesting if we can feel links between cameras and other things. I want the exhibitions to be enjoyable for people who are not camera fans. (Male, 30s)
• I would like to see more seats at the events. Often times, women cannot see anything when men sit down in front of them. The organizer should provide women-only areas and, of course, men-only areas for events, in an
equal way. (Female, 30s)
• I wish that the event was more friendly to beginners. There are too many technical terms! (Male, 50s)
• Generally, I was able to enjoy the event, and I want to visit again next year. I saw many families at the hall, which made me feel warm when they are around. (Female, 20s)
■ About cultural aspects
• In addition to seminars on devices and equipment, I would like to see seminars that present the photo culture (history of photography as art). (Male, 50s)
• I feel that CP+ is an exhibition that can show the tendencies and mentalities of an entire industry, which may create a future photo culture. (Male, 40s)
• I expect seminars and exhibitions by photographers who are actively working to make positive changes to society through the power of photography. (Male, 20s)
• I want to see more cooperation with PHOTO YOKOHAMA, like that one with the Yokohama Museum of Art of last year. (Male, 30s)
• I would like to see a place where one can read academic articles on photography, cameras, and imaging techniques. (Male, 50s)
• I would like to see an exhibition that presents the current state of cameras and photography. The special exhibition by JCII Camera Museum on the Olympic Games was so interesting. Last year’s exhibition for the Camera
Grand Prix prize-winning cameras was also very good, as it showed me the development of the technology of photography. (Male, 60s)
